Original, amusing, and brilliantly documented, Shake is a heartwarming collection of sixty-one beguiling dogs caught in the most candid of mid-shake. This glorious, graphic volume will stop you dead in your tracks as you are presented with images of man's best friend caught in hair wild, eyes darting, ears and jowls flopping every which way. With Shake , photographer Carli Davidson proves how eager and elated we are to see our pets in new ways. The result is a one-of-a-kind a colorful assemblage of photographs that are simultaneously startling and endearing, consistently hard to look away from, and revealing.
this book is called shake. it is a book of pictures of dogs … shaking.
got it??
it captures, for the historical record, all of the intricate face-and ear-motions that go on when a dog is shaking. because it is important. some of the photos are more fun than others. shake-scholars are in agreement that the most important elements contributing to an impressive shake are 1) jowls and 2) drool.
because this?
those are very cute, but once you add drool and jowls, it becomes exponentially more interesting.
see?
in some of these pictures, i don't even know what is going on. it is a storm of floppy flesh and fluid and wrinkled cuteness.
but this one is just wrong. poor little guy - don't make him look goofy when he already has to deal with wheels!!! i love him.
so that's that!! an amazing book with page after page of dogs shaking. resist it if you can, but don't fool yourself - you probably can't.
Definitely an original idea by an awesome photographer being Carli Davidson who captures, her dogs, her families, friends, rescues and shelter even. Shows side by side photo's of various breeds shaking, priceless some of the looks they have and my favorite was the pug towards the beginning of it.
This would make an awesome gift for an dog lover, be a great edition to either your coffee table or that shelf in your bathroom that you keep reading matter on.
Photographer Carli Davidson has captured dogs in the act of shaking their heads. Some are wet, some are goofy, and some have more mouth than they need, but all are cute. The author also explains how she captured the dogs in mid-shake and explains a bit about rescue dogs. This is a book you will want to peruse time and again.
Each of the pictures in this book captures a split second perfectly focused image of a unique dog in mid shake. I particularly liked the two page spread format with two pictures of each dog model. The layout enhances the feeling of motion and the pairs of pictures helped me feel as if I was really getting acquainted with each dog model. This is an impressive portfolio of photographs with great emotional appeal.
Love this book, the images are just wonderful and funny. This is what I call a happy day book, because you could not look at the photo's within and not smile. I agree with the creators message too about adopting a shelter dog, some of the best dogs come from shelters.
Full of pictures of a large variety of dogs as they shake, some with water some with drool, all with enthusiasm. Worth picking up and looking at. Everyone I have shown this book to has to share at least one of the photos with someone nearby.
I loved this. So light and fluffy (both literally and figuratively) and just a good book to curl up and giggle over with someone. Adorability has occurred. Pffffttt, that's totally a word!!! Also "The Making Of" section in the back was a plus - even more cuteness included for free.
Interesting concept. I like the idea of taking something familiar (a dog) and seeing it in a new way. Images are sharp and clear, and I must admit that I enjoyed seeing such an active moment frozen in time.
Shake is another adorable little coffee table book about dogs. Unlike the acclaimed Underwater Dogs it illustrates the funny side of various dogs caught in the act of, you guessed it, shaking. Although perhaps not as original Underwater Dog (which was released first) it still captures the heart of its audience right from the very first picture. Some of the expressions on these dogs faces are hilarious and I couldn't help but laugh out loud at them. Other's made me nostalgic for my own Puppy. I also quite like the double page spread on each dog as it allowed two unique snapshots of a time that would otherwise have been lost forever and gave it the edge of Underwater Dogs because of this.
Overall a fantastic little book to add to your coffee table collection that will keep the entire family not only entertained, but laughing :)
Who would have thought that slobbery shaking dogs could make such a hilariously fun picture book for anyone of any age! I won this book and when it came in the mail, I could not contain myself! I have two boxers, who slobber and shed. After looking at these pictures, I can now understand why I am constantly wiping my walls and vacuuming my floors! This book would make an awesome christmas gift for children or adults! Carli Davidson has a talent which show through her photography and of course, her love of dogs! I highly reccomend picking up this book for someone or yourself this holiday season, this book will have you laughing!!
Another dog related book my partner gifted me..I think I had seen the original online project at some point but I truly appreciated the full spectrum of the dogs in this book, from disabled to puppy to siblings to all he different breeds! More special for me is there's a spread of a Boston terrier and I was grappling with my childhood bostons getting older..we actually put down Sparkle-the mom later that day and I noticed in both her and her son from her second litter, attempts at shaking but not being able to do the full process. Shake brought a smile to me and I was impressed with each dog being profiled in the back with their given name and the explanation of the process, it made it much more than just dogs being funny, but truly a work of art!
This is a wonderful picture book of dogs shaking. That's pretty much it. There are over 130 photos of dogs, caught in mid-shake. Most of these dogs are rescues, two are disabled, some are slinging drool - all of them are in the middle of something that can make you laugh from the expressions you see on their faces.
Each dog is portrayed at least twice (two different shake poses), which is great, because there's so much expression in those faces.
This is a great photo book, showing dogs in a natural position you've seen more times than you can think - but in ways you never quite imagined.
Years ago, when I had my first Basset Hound, Fred, I noticed the amazing and hilarious contortions he’d get into when shaking his head and body. I tried photographing this, but either he was too fast or my hand was too shaky or my camera was inadequate to the task. So when I accidentally came across Carli Davidson’s “Shake” on display in the library recently, I had to check it out.
There is very little text to this book, but I did learn that it takes very special equipment to perfectly capture a dog in mid-shake. The over 130 photographs are crystal-clear, beautiful, often hilarious, and always fascinating. Each of the photos deserves careful and repeated scrutiny.
This is a cute book filled with pictures of dogs in the midst of a shake. Some of the pictures kind of grossed me out because of the flying slobber, but others were pretty cute and/or funny.
Description: Original, amusing, and brilliantly documented, Shake is a heartwarming collection of sixty-one beguiling dogs caught in the most candid of moments: mid-shake. This glorious, graphic volume will stop you dead in your tracks as you are presented with images of man's best friend caught in contortion: hair wild, eyes darting, ears and jowls flopping every which way.
Even though I'm not a dog person, I appreciated this book! The author took time to photograph dogs that needed adopting, to feature them and their adoption stories. She also worked with them and explained the photography process. I think this book has a lot of angles for interest. I had pulled it for a photography display on the bookmobile but quite a few coworkers ended up looking at it!
My kids spend countless hours giggling through this book. They have memorized every dog's name and spend hours doodling the dog names on notebooks, or trying to sketch the images of these hilarious dogs. My youngest typically falls asleep with this book in his bed; he may be slightly obsessed with the book, but aren't we all a little obsessed with books?!
Alicia says: Along the lines of the bestseller Underwater Dogs, this book is for dog lovers like myself. These photos create lots of smiles and laughter. The dogs are rescue animals which the photographer & myself are great advocates of. Great gift idea!
