It was the Mulligatawny Soup that drew me to this, haven't tasted it since I left the UK in 1975. I'm living in Australia now and before that I lived in New Zealand and nobody seems to know it. I love spicy food and these recipes are simple so they are definitely on our menu now.
I was introduced to the wonderful flavors of Indian cooking three years ago when I decided on a whim to enter a local restaurant for lunch. The aromas that wafted from the kitchen and the spicy well seasoned flavors that both dazzled and surprised my taste buds kept me coming for more many times after. I've often picked up Indian cook books to try cooking at home. Some seemed very complicated and beyond my rookie skills as a cook. Others lacked the taste that I searched for when visited the local restaurants near by. The Everything Indian Slow Cooker Cookbook fulfills everything that I needed and was looking for in an Indian cook book. The ingredients are nicely listed and easily found at my local Indian grocery store. There is a nice and very small background told of each recipe along with very easy to follow instructions that even a guy like me can't mess up. Best of all the flavors of these recipes are absolutely amazing. Even my wife is impressed what I happen to cook up with this excellent book. I have used this book countless times when I am in the mood to cook and eat Indian cuisine and after many times if borrowing the book from the local library I have finally decided to review it here on GoodReads. I highly recommend this book to your taste buds.
Many of the recipes look tasty but I have not made any in my slow cooker.
So far, all of the ones that caught my eye have directions along the lines of 'cook on high for 1 hour (or less), do an action such as stir or add ingredients, then cook on low for 5-6 hours'. I work during the day. The beauty of a slow cooker is that you can cook something overnight while sleeping (usually I do to pack for lunch the next day) or during the day to eat when you get home. If I have to be home or awake and attentive to the slow cooker during the cooking time then, for me at least, that defeats the purpose of using a slow cooker.
I might give a few recipes a try adapting for a regular stove but already have a couple really good Indian cookbooks for that purpose. Plus, the library wants the Slow Cooker book back soon.
The books was well-written, but perhaps it's something you buy and not borrow from the library. I tried many of the recipes and found that one of two things happened: the recipe was too spicy or too watered down. Also, the recipes were for a large family or for entertaining. The quantities were large. As a single person, I gave my extra to several neighbors and friends.
Also, I was under the impression that for most recipes, you could just put all the ingredients in the pot, walk away for 8 hours and then have a ready-made meal. But lot of the recipes required some maintenance every two to three hours.
Finally, I'm glad I borrowed the book, but I think I'll work with experimenting on my own.
