Wealthy by Design: A 5-Step Plan for Financial Security

Rate this book
The most powerful word in wealth building is choice.
Too often, we limit our financial future based on conventional wisdom - on what we've heard from the media, or the tropes that we have trained ourselves to believe based on our situation or past. Financial freedom starts with understanding your personal financial drivers. It starts with taking control of your money and leveraging it to create your ideal future - not somebody else's version of success.
In her New York Times Bestseller, Wealthy by Design (7th in ''Advice'' category July 7, 2013), Kimberly Foss offers the insight and tools you need to confidently design a sound investment plan that empowers you to make your own choices. By outlining the five, foundational principles of investing, Kimberly prepares readers to map their course with conviction and integrity. Drawing on her vast career of advising clients from all financial backgrounds, as well as her own rise from humble beginnings, Kimberly frames her advice around powerful and enlightening stories - and through them, you will learn how to leverage personality, situation and belief, while applying proven wealth-building strategies to fulfill your needs and dreams for the future.
Discover financial empowerment and harness the power of choice, in five easy steps.

I enjoyed reading about the life of the author, Kimberly Foss, and how she was able to break through and become a successful financial advisor. She seems to genuinely have the best interests of her clients at heart and she explained how she goes about setting up their financial plans and the factors that must be considered before doing so. However, the examples she gives involve people investing millions of dollars. This seems to reinforce the perception that only people who are already wealthy are welcome at most financial services companies. All of the various aspects of investing and the factors involved did make a very convincing case for hiring a financial advisor, but not unless you are able to bring the big bucks.

Audio ARC provided by NetGalley. All opinions are my own.

Great narrator - made a potentially dry topic very engaging.

I don't know enough about this subject to comment especially intelligently. However, I found the author's story of how she formed her business very interesting. It served as a great example when she was discussing how people can best utilise their money to make it work for them in the form of investments. The basics of investing were fairly well covered here too (at least as far as I could tell) although I'd want to read a few more books on the subject before I experimented! Overall though this was an accessible primer and introduction to the subject and a surprisingly enjoyable read.

This book is most interesting, from the viewpoint of a non-financial-minded person. It's written by a financial advisor, who gives a fascinating account of how her relatively modest upbringing made her determined to succeed financially. She then goes on to explain, via case studies, how the average working person can best invest and plan their finances. Although it is written for the US market, I find most of the information and advice generally applicable (I am in the UK). This book is not a particularly easy read for the average person, but I think worthwhile to spend time getting to grips with the contents, and I will certainly do so.

Reviewed in exchange for a preview Kindle copy.

I received this book as a GoodReads first winner. It is short and an easy read, but I found it to be too much swelf-promotional for my tastes.
