Over the last 27 years, the globally successful musical Les Miserables has entertained and moved audiences totalling more than 60 million in 43 countries and is now a dazzling film that will thrill its many fans and bring the story to millions more.
Beautifully illustrated with images from behind the scenes of both the theatre and film productions, this book tells the story of the incredible phenomenon that grew from a modest Paris production into a multi-award-winning show thanks to the collaboration of its writers Alain Boublil and Claude-Michael Schonberg and the theatrical producer Cameron Mackintosh.
Interesting facts and great memorabilia for every Les Mis lover. I wished it wasn't only about the creation of the musical (and the movie) but also more about the stage musical itself (costume choices/differences between the different shows/LYRICS).
How could I not give this 5 stars?! This deserves so many more! I have loved Les Mis for years, so this book is perfect for any fan. I loved the memorabilia, and learning new things about the musical and the movie. Seriously, read this book!
This book tells the story of the musical phenomenon that is Les Miserables from its birth all the way up to the release of the 2012 film adaptation, which is one of my fave films ever and what introduced me to this wonderful story.
If you love the stage musical or the movie, or both, you should definitely check this book out if you have the chance! It has a ton of great quotes from the creators and the casts, stunning photos and a lot of new information and behind the scenes facts. Loved it.

General Subject/s? - Musical Theatre / Les Miserables / Film
Title? - A journey through the musical from its beginnings on the stage in France to the hit movie.
General Analysis? - A great accompaniment to Les Miserables. It spends a lot of time going into the background, and how it was first brought to the stage, probably very different to now. More could have been said of how it was adapted for the screen, and several key cast members like Eddie Redmayne and Samantha Barks weren't interviewed for the book. These were the only things which let it down for me. The facsimile memorabilia was excellent and added another dimension to the musical I love.
Much like “The Musical World of Boublil and Schonberg”, this lovely coffee table book is a must for diehards. Reading it, I relearn that joyous and disparaging fact that I still have much to learn about Les Mis.
Les Misérables: From Stage to Screen is an absolute masterpiece of a companion book—and for someone like me, who proudly calls Les Misérables my all-time favourite musical, this was nothing short of amazing!
The book is beautifully put together, filled with behind-the-scenes insight, rare photos, costume designs, and interviews that truly bring the world of Les Mis to life in a whole new way. Whether you're a fan of the original stage production or the film adaptation, this book covers it all with incredible detail and passion.
It was fascinating to see how the iconic story evolved from Victor Hugo’s novel to a global theatrical phenomenon and eventually to the big screen. Every page felt like a celebration of the show's legacy and impact.
For me, one of the best parts was seeing how much love and effort has gone into every version of Les Misérables over the years. The stories from cast members, directors, and designers gave me a whole new appreciation for the work behind the curtain.
If you’re a fellow fan of Les Mis, this is an absolute must-have. It made me fall in love with the show all over again.
“To love another person is to see the face of God.” And I absolutely loved every page of this book.
Such a wonderful book charting Les Mis from it’s humble beginnings to the global success it soon became. Hardly any stone is left unturned as this book goes into detail about Victor Hugo’s life, how the musical came about, the glory worldwide and then finally the film. There’s some great insights into what went into creating the musical and the film as well. There was some really interesting info. Great photos too. Fabulous book!
i believe this is the version of this book that i just finished, but it was a really interesting look at the beginnings of Les Mis and how it's evolved over the years! a great read for any fan of the show
I like this book. I'm glad I bought it. It's a book for the true Les Mis fan, with lots of history about the musical and some cool memorabilia. I pretty much stopped reading when it got to the part about the making of the movie, though. I am much more interested in the live version. This would make a great coffee table book, except unfortunately I don't think it is physically well constructed (at least my copy isn't). The padded cover ripped the first time I opened the book, so now it will be banished to the bookshelf. It's a shame, because this is a hands-on book that should be viewed and flipped through. It's not really the type of book you want to curl up with and read cover to cover. Still, it's worth owning if you're a die hard Les Mis fan.
This beautiful coffee table book is a must for all fans of "Les Miserables." With outstanding information on the original novel, author Victor Hugo, the various musical productions, etc., it's chock-full of material that provides a great deal of insight into the show's ongoing popularity.
Part of what makes this book such a treat is the included ephemera. There are replica posters, prop lists, tickets and more, tidily placed in envelopes throughout the text.
