My first book on Mindfulness! Thank you to my ex-boss, my mentor who gave me this book. Learnt many lessons on mindfulness, the book is a combination of philosophical and practical approach on how one can apply mindfulness at work. Some points can be preachy in delivery, but overall a good read. Immediately after I finished the book, I transfer some mindfulness techniques in my note book to be work on during the 2 weeks PKP.
.It is for masses. As most of us are employees. Following few enterpraneurs and leaders.
Book is about ever so touchy employees who seek to change job frequently instead of trying to sort out problems at workplace. And their continuous search for a delightful job lands them into frustration.
But mind it, that it is not a technical book. It is more of a spiritual take on this problem with focus on mindfulness and acceptance.
Writing is simple, cohesive and informative. Even real life examples and dialogues of fictional boss and employees are given.
Author says one should observe without judging and allow instead of controlling. Try to enhance positives and try to avoid competition.
Also tips about conflict resolution and effective communication. Overall a useful book to earn a fresh look on your job and trying to love your old, hairy, grumpy, tepid job.
Liked how it starts with shaping our perspective on work, or specifically the workplace itself. Unfortunately, the book ends with generic descriptions of several techniques, which does not address the perceptions mentioned at the start.
Sometimes you can go too far. Or to be more accurate, sometimes you can go too far for me.
This book started with a number of good mindfulness ideas linked to the workplace. OK there are some forthright suggestions about just leaving your work and some examples that are so clearly made up they make you cringe but is generally starts well.
Problem arise when you start reading further into this book. As I read Issues began to arise that took me right out of it.
Far be it from me to dismiss someone else's beliefs but the silly new age ramblings later in this book just spoiled the experience for me.
I do NOT think the universe is listening to me I do NOT think the universe wants what's best for me. I do NOT think that if I wish hard enough and I am good enough the universe will reward me and make my life better. That is a dangerous philosophy as it allows the holder of the opinion to then think those who have a tough time have it because they have not wished hard enough, or not been good enough or somehow do not deserve a better life. Its victim blaming. Its disempowering when what you need from a book like this is the exact opposite.
The vibe at the end of this book ruined the help it could offer at the start. It appears to take all of the agency out of the reader and hands it all to the specious idea that the universe has some kind of generic will you have to get on the right side off.
This book moved from an advice book to a belief and wish book and that is a real shame.
