Hyde, #3

Strange Case

Rate this book
Sometimes, to see the eyes of your greatest enemy, you need to look into a mirror.

In this final chapter of Mitch and Eden's story, everyone will be tested. Morality and honor weighed against getting the job done. But desperation can make people do things they never thought they’d be capable of. And returning from hell is a pretty damn big wake-up call, especially once Mitch realizes that the woman he loves has been in a different kind of hell…and she can’t get out of it.

*** STRANGE CASE is the conclusion of Mitch and Eden’s story and may prove confusing to those who haven’t read the first two books. This novel is intended for adults. It includes lots of cursing, biting sarcasm, descriptive sex, and some seriously bad team morale.

Other books in this trilogy:
Hyde, an Urban Fantasy (Book I)
Jekyll, an Urban Fantasy (Book II)

Dear reader,
Although Strange Case marks the end of this trilogy, it isn't the end of the Hyde world. Thank you for your support and for taking a risk on a series that can be crude and cruel but is, at its core, a love story.

5 Unique and Beautifully Abnormal Stars

“I love her more than you can possibly imagine. I’ve brought her more pain than I can possibly imagine. But she would still give up her soul for me, and that’s exactly why I can’t let her.”

description

In a world that the worst monsters are the ones hiding deep within themselves Eden & Mitch, will make their last stand. Against the injustice and cruelty inflicted upon them, against their inner primal urges, experimental drugs, evil masterminds and a conspiracy that ruled their lives for the last time. They will have to accept their worst parts and live another day.

"They were fighting with the devil, two devils really. Transform one back into a man and bring down the other"

description

Stronger together but with all odds against them, their only allies, a cynical cop, a clueless scientist and a broken teenager. Truths and secrets will threaten to tear them apart, but their biggest enemy is death and a life without each other. Will they succeed in earning a future? Do a Jekyll and a Hyde deserve a happily ever after?

An awesome series that take you for a wild ride from book 1 to the heart-stopping finale. It made me cry and despair. Fantasy and mystery but in essence a love story that will make you sigh and smile...

description

Intense and with a healthy dose of irony and dark humor, I laughed out loud with the insanity of the situation and the hilarious banter between Mitch and Landon.

"Mitch wasn’t interested in threesomes. He’d tried it in college and, frankly, it was a lot of work and too hard to focus."

description

In alternate POVs Mitch and Eden conclude their chapter of the story. I can't wait for more Landon and his merry band of Hydes.

"Happy beginning..."

Kudos for a job well done, Lauren Stewart! I have said it already but you deserve it once more.

It's out on Amazon, B&N, Smashwords, and Kobo! I'll let you know when it comes up on other retail sites. Thanks!

Sign up for my newsletter so I can send you a direct link as well as a pretty dramatic scene between Mitch and Eden. I had to cut it from the final version but really, really like it. He's so cruel sometimes.

Thank you all for your support and patience. XOXO

I would really LOVE to give this 5+ stars!! And out of no where I decided to write a review in a totally non-review way. Soooo...

Eden: You, Wonder Woman, you. There were times when you pissed me right the fuck off. And times when you kicked ass, literally. But all times, I felt for you. You deserved your ending. Very proud of your transformation through all of it.

Alex: Boo, you whore.

Ryan: Nice try, fucker

Justin: You were a breath of fresh innocence through all of this. I feel you were just as important as Mitch, Eden, and Landon in this final book.

Danielle: Another kick ass female. Actually, an exceptionally smart and awesome, kick ass female. Best match up for 'Nick'!

Landon: THE BEST BEST FRIEND ANYONE CAN EVER ASK FOR. God, the bromance between Mitch and Landon was just perfect! But not just his scenes with Mitch. Landon on his own is just as remarkable and brave and strong. .. But really I loved the Lander bickering the most.

Mitch: Oh, Mitch.. For me, you were it for this series. There isn't a scene in which I could hate you, even when you being particularly horrid, and especially when you were Hyde. You sucked as Hyde. But I was still on your team! If anyone deserved a win, it's you. Just like your personality, you love absolutely fiercely, and I adore you for it. Plus, you're wit and sarcastic comments at the wrong times was freaking great.

Lauren Stewart: THANK. YOU.

*****5 Captivating Growling Stars*****

Wow...oh wow....FINALLY....the ending to The Hyde series!!!

I've waited and waited to finally find out what the hell happens....we left with such a powerful cliffhanger in Book #2 that I didn't know how I was going to handle this one!

Oh how I LOVE Mitch!! I love his sarcasm, I love his dedication to Eden....damn I just LOVE everything about him!  There are so many questions which need to be answered in this book.

Will Mitch survive his Hyde?

Will he continue to transform?

Will Eden's love save Mitch?

Who the hell is funding this and running the show?

Lauren Stewart again delivers a phenomenal book in which we laugh at Landon and Mitch's banter while we cry when it seems everything will fail.  God, how I loved this series and especially this book!

Two important things to know before I start reviewing:
1 - I downloaded book 1 for free and then went on to purchase books 2 & 3
2 - I threw out my back and read this entire series on painkillers and muscle relaxants. Take that for what it is :)

I read the first 2 books in 2 days, then it took me 4 just to finish the 3rd. Some of this I think is because I read them too fast, but a lot of it was that book 3 just repeated the same god damn themes and narrative OVER AND OVER AND OVER. I was so bored at some points! Eden is an idiot, Mitch is useless, Landon is awesome, RyRy is evil and the Clinic must be destroyed. Ok, I get it. Except for the very end where we get to the "Shop" there's nothing new in this whole book. Yeah, Landon gets a girl, but it's like a throw away to try and keep readers invested because the chemistry and investment between Mitch and Eden is just GONE.

I did like the end, but I'm frustrated that a new awesome character and story line was introduced and there's no plan for another book. That left me feeling pretty unsatisfied.

★★ 5 '450-Pages-of-Awesomeness' Stars★★

Review contains light spoilers

I was one of those lucky girls that got an ARC from Lauren and I literally took my sweet time reading it. I was waiting of this book what seems like forever -yeah blame my patience for that- and she didn't disappoint with what she delivered. Strange Case ended exactly how I wish it'd be; no super cheezy ending, no super HEA, but with a new beginning for Mitch & Eden.

Did I want this series to end? -Hell no! I could and would like to read more of Eden and Mitch. Such an abnormal couple, but so loveable!! So it's obvious I'm a bit sad this series is over...

Strange Case starts off where book 2, Jekyll ,ended. Eden was held captive by The Clinic, endoured such cruelty, before Mitch saved her, by giving himself up, doing whatever he can to keep his Eden safe.

Aftr that, Eden hat only two things, two important things to focus on:
"Finding a way to bring Mitch back... Number two was making absolutely The Clinic paid for everything they'd done. Murder, rape, kidnapping and deceit were expensive hobbies." Mitch was out already 8 days, since he "had given himself over and they'd brought the facility down."

So yeah, Eden was beyond pissed, worried and wanted revenge, peace, and a piece of herself back... a piece that she lost while held captive in the clinics walls. She wanted Mitch back; without him she felt lost, shut off her emotions and was just a shell of her former self. It got harder and harder to look at this chained version of Mitch; his Hyde was killing her, killing her by knowing he held Mitch, the man she loved so much, hostage inside.

But she refused to give up...to give up on Mitch...she knew he would somehow make it make back, back to her...even if her heart would break little by little while waiting

"...it's really hard to be light-hearted when your heart is broken. When every moment of the day is painful. When a constant reminder of all you've lost is chained up in the next room."

"When Mitch disappeared, her emotions did too, tucked into her subconscious, useless."

Mitch... he was still this cocky, dirty mouth bastard but this time with a much more softer side- I loved this side on him!He proofed himself as fighter when taking out Hyde01 to safe Eden, and bringing down The Clinic, but he also proofed himself that so much good is in him. He truly fell deeply, for the very first time, in love... In love with no other than Eden. He never imagined being able to love anything or someone, as hard as Eden. She was his Yin to his Yang, his missing piece of his puzzle to complete him... she was everything to him.

"if it comes down to you or me, I will always choose you." -Yeap I love him like that...which girl wouldn't be a goner right?! I could keep posting so many things he said, things that made my heart warm and wish for someone like him. Yes, he truly opened up and Lauren showed us a side of him that made me fall hard for him even more.

Mitch loves Eden for so many different reasons and doesn't, can't let her ruin herself but giving in to her abnormal side to get her revenge ... "I love her more than you can possible imagine. I've brought her more pain than I can possible imagine. But she would still give up her soul for me, and that's exactly why I can't let her."

Let's not forget about our fav ex-cop Landon, he was still a big part in the third book and he kept Eden and Mitch sane when they were about to lose it. I really really liked his character and was thrilled to read his little happy ending too - he deserved it so much!! He made me laugh and sad to the same time cause I knew he deserved so much more, especially after losing literally everything because of The Clinic. He was a strong character and a best friend to Mitch.

Strange Case is the continuing story to finally bring the person down who's responsible for all the pain every Abnormal had to go through. It kept me on edge till the end because Lauren did a great job stretching the suspense to the very last. But don't think this series is just an Urban Fantasy book, because if THEN YOU'RE WRONG. It's "a story that can be crude and cruel but" it "is in it's heart, a love story." And it truly is, it's a slow building love story about two abnormals that fight to finally live a happy life.

I love you, Eden Colfax. You made me love you. ... Everything good inside me is for you. Because of you. ... Thank you for choosing me. ~Mitch

Now, I wasn't, in the slightest bit, happy about Jekyll. If I can remember correctly (I just checked, I wasn't). I know I wasn't because I am not very happy about Strange Case and I felt a certain dejá vú upon beginning this little adventure of pity parties and whine tasting.

The themes I mentioned in my review of Jekyll carry through to this one...seriously. The. Same. Exact. Themes.

Look. I know Mitch was this snarky, badass, with verbal attitude so cunningly derisive it could debilitate The Incredible Hulk until he came across perfect, virtuous Eden and his whole world got straight shaken margarita style which left him with this swelling in his heart and eh-hem nether regions, am I right? Yeah, I'm right. you know how I know?

BECAUSE WE WERE NEVER ALLOWED TO FORGET IT.

I mean hawt damn can a sista breath a little without having to read that shiz over and over and over...smh. Damn, folks.

On top of all the love there was the pity.

The gawddamned pity.

Shit, man. Can somebody for, oh I don't know, 3 whole minutes go without saying what a shitty person they are for x, y, z reasons?? If it wasn't Eden and her constant stupid shit about what a horrible conscience-less, mega bitch she was it was Mitch and his hemming and hawing about how he was incessantly unable to be there for his woman because of his Hyde, or it was Landon guffawing about his loss of job and inability to save those around him... My god people. Shut up!

Everyone, EVERYONE, in this book was annoying. Everyone.

I swear that I was so over reading about how this character was going to sacrifice him/herself for that character because they needed to in order to right some inner wrongness in themselves or whatever garbage, blah, blah, blah...

Shit was annoying. I'm glad it's over. #Truth.

The only redeeming quality in this one was the sarcastic comments that Mitch made. He was still pretty funny when he was acting like a pussy.

All in all: Hell naw. Next!

So, This series was pretty cool. It was an interesting take on an old story.
But honestly, I was SO FUCKING BORED. I skimmed most of the book because of this. Book 2 and 3 were pretty much the same book until the last 80% or so.

Clinic is bad.
description

RyRy is evil.
description

Mitch is a loveable, useless , asshole. His "Im going to sacrifice myself for you" was really overdone.
description

Eden turned into a badass. An angsty, moody, and miserable badass, but a badass none the less.
description

Landon. Ah, Landon. How I wish you would have been the star or at least have your own spinoff.
((I actually have no idea what he was supposed to look like in the books but this is MY Landon))
description

Danielle is the new character introduced that was pretty awesome. Her and Landons story was so much more interesting to me. Too bad they were left on the backburner for most of the book. Smart, Sassy, Strong female characters just do it for me.
None of this over-dramatic ooey gooey love that is just so ridiculous that it makes me want to slap a monster silly.
At least she was there for some sort of chemistry with Landon since Mitch and Edens romance was so fizzled and uninteresting I couldn't wait for a Landon and Dani scene.
description

All in all, a decent and solid 3 star series. I liked it, but it wont be going on my Favorite list.. Now, if they make a spin off of Landon and Dani... That's a different story.

Brilliant, edge of my seat, could hardly breathe wrap up to the trilogy. I loved this book!! Mitch and Eden are one of my most favorite couples ever!! All the books in this Trilogy are just freaking brilliant. We left off at not a good place in Jekyll and I was left very nervous about what would happen. Thank God I didn’t have to wait forever to find out. I was so freaking happy that the beginning of this book didn’t drag on and we got right to it. I can’t go long without hearing Mitch’s voice. Every page of this book had me holding my breath. What a wild ride. There were so many times I was screaming at my Kindle. Seriously, I didn’t think I would make it and I couldn’t read fast enough. There was a lot going on in this one and it seemed at most times all of our heroes were by themselves which just added way more freaking drama!! Inside their own heads working out their own feelings and doing what they thought was right. I loved getting this from each of them but I couldn’t wait for it to STOP!!! I wanted all of them to work together and to get on the same page and for them to ANSWER THEIR PHONES!!! Eden battled so much with herself this entire book, I was soooo tired for her. The not knowing with Mitch was devastating and completely nerve wracking! He battled both physically and mentally and I just wanted him to win!! Such a battle of right and wrong each of them faced. It was just freaking brilliant!! I don’t want to leave out Landon, I gotta at least give him a mention. Best, BFF ever. He is just the best friend that Mitch could ever have and the love between these two is a story all in itself. I am so happy to see where life is going to take him, he is so amazing and deserves and amazing story. I don’t know what else to say. If you haven’t read these books you seriously need to read them. One of my most favorite love stories ever! Thank you Lauren!!

WOW! An end - FINALLY!!!

I love this whole series! It's really good from first to last book!

How can you not love Mitch??!!! He's fantastic!! And his sarcasm, his "jokes", his banter with Landon, his protectiveness, his LOVE for Eden... it was all just ... WOW!!! Excellent!!!

Even in the worst moment, Mitch's banter is hilarious! His humor is an excellent blen of whitty and dark humor! And there are tons of that here. It's what makes the book so, so good! And what makes a really difficult problems balanced. Otherwise the book would be way too much heavy and negative.

I loved Eden too. She's the perfect woman for Mitch! Her strenght is not only physical (she's a Jekyll!), but she's able to temper Mitch's much more violent Hyde's side. But she's also the one to exasperate it too! It's realy wonderful to read about their interaction!

Landon is fantastic too. I'm really happy that he found in Danielle his other half. He's an excellent support to Mitch's voice. He's their best friend in the truest sense of the word!

And Danielle is great too. She's cool in desperate situations, she's compassionate, she's all for the right things to do! Even if she's introduced later on in the book her personality was really very much appreciated!

The story was so action-packed that you don't have a moment to relax. Something always is happening, something always goes wrong, and you feel almost overwhelmed by it all!

But, at the end, everything falls into right place and the story finally feels complete.

Great, great trilogy that keep its promises through all three books!

Ah, Ms. Stewart, can we have some more books about all of them? Pleaseeeee....

Read January 2014

The finale of Mitch & Eden's trilogy opens pretty much where book two was ending. Eden & Landon are still trying to get Hyde to release Mitch, still hiding out at the brothel and still trying to stay a few steps ahead of The Clinic. Tying up loose ends started early in the read with betrayals discovered, dreams lost and found and making headway uncovering the secrets of The Clinic and possibly a cure as this installment started at a breakneck speed
While Eden continued to work the music for her pity party, Mitch came full circle from book one although he & Eden were just as angst-y as a couple as they'd ever been (IMO). The one to watch in this read was Landon as he defined BFF. In case it was missed before, Landon's loyalty, desires, bad a** warrior (in thought and deed) all came out to play in all their glory as he finally got his own romance going with Danielle. As usual the banter between Mitch and Landon was funny, but seemed to be trying a bit hard in places.

This installment moved quickly and if you've not read the first two installments you may be lost here. While this wasn't the best read I've had I did like it better than Jekyll and liked the wrap-up pieces that made the story feel complete. While the Mitch & Eden story seems complete or the how they started portion seems complete the ending did leave room for additional installments or offshoots for the series.

Eden Colfax didn't realize how much more her life could be turned upside down yet there it is. It's been eight days since Mitch became Hyde. Just listening to Hyde is enough to make her want to run and hide from it all. If it wasn't for Landon that's probably what would have happened by now. Desperate for choices and action are better than doing nothing at all while feeling useless. When Mitch finally back to being himself again, they make plans to go to Texas for more answers. Meanwhile the mystery man in charge of The Clinic is getting more and more bad news by the minute. He just can't seem to figure out if he's blind or has stupid written across his forehead. He wants Eden and Turner neutralized now with no more screw ups either. Can Eden, Mitch, and Landon get the answers they need? Will mystery man get what he wants? Your answers await you in Strange Case.

This stunning conclusion really packed a punch emotionally and mentally. The story was complex, intriguing, mysterious, and compelling. The characters were real, raw, honest, mysterious, compelling, and complex. I'll definitely be reading more from this author in the future.

Strange Case marks the end of the Hyde trilogy - and it's undoubtedly my favourite of the three books. By now, both Eden and Mitch have gone through a lot of character development (and continue to do so throughout this installment) and while both of them still have a few moments that make me want to slap them around, they have both become stronger, more likable and infinitely better together. Landon remains my uncontested favourite among the characters, however, and I both continued to enjoy that bromance thing he's got going on with Mitch and heartily approved of the fact that he found some romance of his own with Danielle. (And was badass-Landon badass or what? :D) All in all, this was a very satisfying conclusion to the trilogy. The author has also hinted that she might write more books set in this universe in the future - I'd definitely be on board with that!

Love, Love, Love this series! I was on the edge of my seat. I was worried where we would go after the ending of Jekyll worried what would come of Mitch (love Mitch). I should have had more faith that the others would come through for him, because with the best BFF ever in Landon and a soul mate like Eden, Mitch had to come back. I am happy with the ending of the series but sad to say goodbye to Mitch, Eden, and Landon.

This final chapter of Mitch and Eden’s story was not as riveting as I had hoped. The plot seemed to drag in several places and some of the scenes seemed in plausible. I was also a little disappointed in the characterization of Eden because I saw her as a much stronger woman versus the one depicted as so dependent on Mitch that she lost sight of everything around her . . . And this downward emotional spiral was NOT connected with her Hyde – that part made sense. Finally, the ending seemed a little rushed. There were a few loose ends that I would have liked to see tied off. Of course, that could have been because I was pushing so hard to see how it all ended.

On the positive side, the development of Landon, the twist of Ryan, and the downfall of the Clinic were shining points! Overall, though, I enjoyed this series and the way it related to Robert Louis Stevenson’s The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde.

Disclaimer from Amazon: This novel is intended for adults. It includes lots of cursing, biting sarcasm, descriptive sex, and some seriously bad team morale.

Part suspense, complete with an evil villain, part bodice-ripping romance. Fights, lots of bloodsplatter and gore; intense graphic sex; dry, sarcastic humor with plenty of foul language. It's a non-stop rollercoaster ride. Think "Lethal Weapon" with the love tormented interests right there instead of painful memories. And I really enjoyed most of it. I downloaded this a while back before I swore off the free or $.99 "hook" books because so many of them are so poorly written and edited. But, I had it, and I was spending too much time in waiting rooms, so I started it and I was hooked. And because it was so good I actually bought the remaining two books. I may even pick pick up more by this author. But darnit!!! where does that leave me with my no-more-indie-crappie-freebie-hooks resolution? It's harder to tell the good from the bad than with melons!

Wow! What a way to end the series. I can't even begin to explain how good this book was. I really wanted for things to work out for Mitch and Eden but I didn't know exactly how that was going to work. Lauren did an amazing job finishing this series in a way where it honestly could still be picked up if she chose to do so. I loved the characters in this book as well.

Eden seemed to really find herself in this book. She knew at one point that her dark side was taking over when she was alone with Ryan. It took a lot for her to realize that and for her to try and control the desire to just give in to it. I believe that her and Mitch bring the best out of each other. She gives him the sweet side and he gives her a more dangerous side. I can't wait to see if these characters pop up in another series. Highly recommend this series!

One of my all time favorites!
First, let’s talk about this entire 3-book series! A-Maze-ing!!
Okay now, book 3... best book of the series and I seriously didn’t think it could get any better. The banter & sarcasm had me laughing out loud.
Between the jaw dropping moments and edge of my seat
drama this book was a page turner for sure!
Before this series I was new to this author but i am now a big fan. I’m excited to read her in other genres.
Note:
These books are not standalone and books 1 & 2 have cliffhangers. Ordinarily this would bother me but since the series has already been published it worked out perfectly!! That being said,
I would absolutely recommend this series.

Like the story - but too much inner monologue

I read a review for Hyde that said the book could have taken just 40 mins to read without all the inner monologue. All 3 books could have been 1 in this case.
I loved the story. Loved Mitch's humour. Eden got annoying for me. Bits were predictable. And the one death in particular where he just dropped in the hallway had me laughing so hard cause it was so lame. Half way through this book I almost DNF but I came all this way.

Third entry of the trilogy.

The final battles over and over again. Our characters constantly on the brink of disaster. The least engaging of the trilogy.
