The River is About to Reveal its Terrible Secret...
Oxford rower Hannah Emmerson vanished four years ago while jogging along the River Isis. Her mysterious disappearance became a source of heartbreak and torment for her loved ones and the academic community when the search for Hannah yielded no results.
That is, until now.
In the wake of a catastrophic storm that has flooded the city, Hannah's body is discovered during a one in a thousand narrowboat accident. As the investigation into her death intensifies, the stakes become even higher when other another woman in the Oxford rowing team is targeted. DI Joseph Stone and DC Megan Anderson, are tasked with unraveling the secrets of the River Isis murderer before the murderer can strike again.
But when a new victim is abducted while under police protection, the situation becomes even more urgent. The pressure is on Joseph and Megan to uncover the common thread that links all of the cases together, and it seems that the river itself may hold the key. Can they unravel the truth and find the connection before it's too late? The clock is ticking, and the fate of a missing woman’s life hangs in the balance.
I read this on Kindle Unlimited as soon as I seen this I has to read after k listen to the frsir Di Joseph Stone Crime Thriller laat year and absolutely loved it
We are following Joseph as he's investing Hannah murder after her body was found at a lake this was a case a few years ago.
Thought this book i have really enjoyed the teamwork of Joseph and Megan and have enjoyed seeing Megan's growth in the force.
I didn't expect that ending I was sure I'd guessed right yet again I was shocked and compelled until k finished I adore this.
When a body is found by a boat carried away in a flood it looks like it has been there a while. DI Joseph Stone and team are called out and to his horror he recognises a trainer found near the body as one belonging to a missing student a few years before- one his boss and adversary quickly closed the case on due to little evidence. When another rowing student goes missing on the morning she is going home for good having bailed out of Oxford life altogether, things take a more urgent turn. Is the coach who is known for being a bully, taking things several steps further or is there someone else lurking in the shadows?
I love this series- they do stand happily alone but why miss out on another fantastic read? There's a warmth of character about Joseph and a sense of appropriate humour. I had to laugh when “ an officer can smell a doughnut at a hundred paces or possibly a mile if the wind is in the right direction” ! It's a well crafted, carefully throughout plot line which takes a meander or two both up and downstream. Joseph and Megan are a wonderful team and bounce off each other very well-to me the real skill of an author to not only bring characters to life but to have that camaraderie amongst the pages that adds that extra sparkle of joy to the reader. A brilliant, highly entertaining read I thoroughly recommend- I can’t wait for the next one!
A Flood of Sorrows is book 2 in the DI Joseph Stone series by J.R. Sinclair. A gruesome find is uncovered when a canal boat crashes into an embankment on the Isis River in Oxford at the height of a flood. And that is just the beginning, but there could be some connection to an unsolved case from 4 years before. The river certainly plays a big part in this book. Joseph certainly doesn’t have much time for his boss, the DSU, now his ex-wife’s husband. In fact, not many people do, and this certainly brings some humour into the story. I have really enjoyed seeing the development in the characters since the previous book, The Dead of Midwinter. The respect between Joseph and his DCI is terrific to see and I really like DC Megan Anderson, who is now much more confident. Dylan, the Professor and Joseph’s neighbour, is a bit quirky and usually manages to play a part. Joseph nearly finds himself out of his depth a number of times for completely different reasons. Loved it.
When flooding affects Oxford and a canal boat tries to stay afloat on the River Isis, the boat owner inadvertently releases a dead body from its hiding place as he tries to get to safety.
Hannah Emmerson disappeared four years ago and has now been found, albeit too late.
Stone and the team are back to square one, with still no clues as to what happened to Hannah after she disappeared, and when they investigated originally.
When another girl disappears and is linked to Hannah via the rowing club they were members of, the team have to do all they can to solve this case before anyone else dies.
This was a great plot and I found it to be intense. The characters were believable and I had no idea who the killer was until the police worked it out!
There were plenty of twists along the way and the book was incredibly fast paced.
I’m looking forward to reading the next book in this exciting series.
This is the second book in the series and just as good as the first. I enjoyed this one in a different way as the characters are becoming more fleshed out. I'm really enjoying the character of Megan who is transforming into a much more confident character than we saw in the first book.
The discovery of the body of a dead woman who went missing 4 years ago brings back memories for Joseph and adds more fuel to the conflict between his and his DS who is married now to his ex-wife. When another female rower disappears, the tension ramps up and I enjoyed the whole investigative side of the story. There are some moments where you think that couldn't really happen but apart from that, it's a wonderful read. The story has some twists and one I definitely didn't see coming.
We're only 2 books into the series and I'm already waiting with bated breath for the third.
I throughly enjoyed this book. The opening chapter really reels you in straight away; there are two people, a boat and the talk of a flood, but what is uncovered?
Who is Hannah Emmerson? What has become of her?
A cold case from a few years ago has to be reopened but why?
Who is Charles Norton and why do the detectives need to speak to him?
A great follow on from the first book in the series which follows a fast paced but intricate investigation into a team of Oxford boat racers, (which felt like something really new and fresh) so really kept my interest. The story has a great twist and a fantastic ending. As this book is the second in the series I’ve also enjoyed seeing the working relationship between the detectives Joseph and Megan develop. Easy 5 star from me
A flood of sorrow is the second outing for DI Joseph Stone. Book one succeeded in creating DI Stone as an engaging and believable character and this excellent development continues through to book two.
Severe flooding causes a barge to collide with the bank along the Isis. This accident reveals a grisly secret and the police re-open a cold case that is all too familiar to DI Stone and the team. Had the victim been stalked? Nobody is sure, but as another attack shows similarities to the first, DI Stone and his team are on the case.
I really enjoyed how each layer was peeled back until we discovered the truth, which included a nice curve ball. Happy to recommend.
Another great read from the author in the DI Stone series but easily read as a stand alone. I love the characterisation and the touches of humour, as well as the team dynamics. Not forgetting Dylan, he's a quirky but very likeable professor and neighbour of Stone's. There's plenty of pace and the tension builds right to the last page. I love the character development, especially DC Anderson, there has to be more to come from her! The author is on to a winning series here and I highly recommend this enthralling and original read. I loved it!
One thing that this book successfully builds on is the plot so heavily weighted with back story from the first book in the series. The author's creation of characters and building up what feels to be genuine conversations between the lead character, the plot deus ex machina character and the interactions with the characters built for this book. Once I got into it, I could not put it down, a credit to the story and character driven logic behind the investigations.
4.5 stars Another pacy story. Lots going on from the discovery of the first body with the weather creating echoes of the past for Joseph. I like the main characters and the way they’re evolving, the only negative for me was the slightly unbelievable resilience of our hero at the end, given what had already happened to him.
This is the 2nd book in the DI Joseph Stone series. It is a police procedural thriller, involving a serial killer who seems to be targeting crew members of the Oxford ladies rowing team.
I loved the atmosphere of Oxford and the Thames. It was good to find out more about Joseph's colleagues and his family.
What is clear about this author, is his passion for Oxford as he describes it so well and places the reader on the ground with the investigating team. This murder is set around the rivers and canals of Oxford and a missing woman plus a cold case. It is fast paced with great writing.
Second book in the series , loved it just as much as the first. Loving the description of Oxford and life on the canal. Good twist to the story and enjoying the complexity of the relationship between the DI and his boss.
Just loved this book from start to finish! Couldn't put It down! Great storyline, and look forward to the next one!! Love the characters in the story! Especially DO Joseph Stone! 😊👍
Great story with a twist I didn’t see coming. DI Joseph stone is a very likeable character with a good sense of humour, his camaraderie with DC Megan Anderson make them a great team.
During flood conditions a body is discovered partly washed out from an embankment. Joseph investigates. An unsolved death and subsequent body disposal four years ago is echoed by a new death, all connected with the university ladies' rowing team. The characters are filling out really well, and I imagine most readers now, like me, look forward to Joseph's collusion with the owner of the neighbouring narrowboat, his academic friend Dylan. The story twists and turns as suspects change with new evidence. It's a real puzzler of a story and I thoroughly enjoyed it.
The second book in the DI Joseph Stone crime series .. it is set in Oxford and I love it when My Home Town of Abingdon is mentioned . I think this just got away with the Heroics.. A very goòd Story
