There is definitely a formula to these books, but it is one that works. The appeal is similar to that of James Bond-- the agent gets cool gadgets, gets into and out of life-or-death situations, and saves the day. This volume has Max going down to Antarctica to discover why there are people disappearing and why the temperature is dropping dangerously low. Also includes Max getting to meet his favorite TV survival expert. These books are quicker reads and have a good amount of action to engage reluctant readers.
