Bourke's Diary is that portion from the journals of 1st Lt. John Gregory Bourke, adjutant and aide to General George Crook during the 1876 Indian Was, and pertaining to the period following the 7th Cavalry at the Battle of Little Big Horn, June 25, 1876. The chronicle commences with June 27th and closes with Sept. 15. The time covered is about two and one half months. But this book much contains more than the journal entries of Lt. Bourke. The volume also comprises the observations of eight correspondents, two physicians, sixteen fellow officers, three scouts, and four enlisted men who served in that campaign.

John Gregory Bourke was a captain in the United States Army and a prolific diarist and postbellum author; he wrote several books about the American Old West, including ethnologies of its indigenous peoples. He was awarded the Medal of Honor for his actions while a cavalryman in the Union Army during the American Civil War. Based on his service during the war, his commander nominated him to West Point, where he graduated in 1869, leading to service as an Army officer until his death.
