Truman Capote was an American writer whose non-fiction, stories, novels and plays are recognised literary classics, including the novella Breakfast at Tiffany's (1958) and In Cold Blood (1965), which he labeled a "non-fiction novel." During this time, he also began his career as a writer, publishing many short stories which introduced him into a circle of literary critics. His first novel, Other Voices, Other Rooms, published in 1948, stayed on The New York Times bestseller list for nine weeks and became controversial because of the photograph of Capote used to promote the novel, posing seductively and gazing into the camera.
In the 1950s and 1960s, Capote remained prolific producing both fiction and non-fiction. His masterpiece, In Cold Blood, a story about the murder of the Clutter family in Holcomb, Kansas, was published in 1966 in book form by Random House, became a worldwide success and brought Capote much praise from the literary community. After this success he published rarely and suffered from alcohol addiction. He died in 1984 at age 59.

Reli “A Christmas Memory”, que, para mim, continua a ser a história de Natal, nesta edição que tem mais dois contos que ainda não conhecia e que confirmam que Truman Capote tem um grande dom para os contos, para os quais desencanta as personagens mais peculiares.
“A Tree of Night” é um medo tornado realidade se não para muita gente, pelo menos para mim: fazer uma viagem de longo curso tendo no banco da frente do comboio um passageiro com vontade de meter conversa, com a agravante de, neste caso, ser um casal estranho e intimidador.
She wondered if there might not be a seat in a car u ahead. She could not bear the woman, or, for that matter, the man, another minute. But she had never before been in a remotely comparable situation. “If you’ll excuse me now,” she said, “I have to be leaving. It’s been very pleasant, but I promised to meet a friend on the train...”
With almost invisible swiftness the woman grasped the girl’s wrist. “Didn’t your mama ever tell you it was sinful to lie?” she stage-whispered.

Lo que me parece brillante de este relato es todo lo que amo de la escritura de Capote. Esa sensibilidad y autenticidad de los personajes, esa forma de saber captar sus gestos genuinos dando pistas de lo que se esconden en sus interiores. Son como pinceladas de la esencia más profunda de los personajes, algo así como los resquicios de su pureza y candor infantiles, a pesar de que son presentados como adultos con una dura existencia cargada en sus espaldas (pienso en Holly Golightly ejerciendo de scort o en Perry Smith de ‘A sangre fría’, que, bueno, es básicamente un asesino pero empatizas en más de un momento con él). Ese momento fugaz en que conectas con el alma de sus personajes, sean como sean, es lo que siempre me ha parecido mágico de la escritura de Capote.
Por eso en sus short stories en los que presenta a niños como protagonistas —esos niños ingenuos y puros, con personalidades fuertes— que se transformarán en el futuro en personajes complejos, me fascinan.
En ‘Niños en su cumpleaños’ nos encontramos con una protagonista más que admirable, una niña fuera de lo común, Miss Bobbit, con una personalidad encandiladora, una suerte de proto Holly Golightly en su infancia rodeada de pretendientes a pesar de ser un bicho raro. Una chica que sorprende por sus ideas propias y avanzadas en un mundo homogeneizado, en un pueblo estadounidense en pleno siglo XX.
No debe ser nada fácil dotar de tantos matices al personaje de un niño a ese nivel; en general las representaciones de la infancia son mucho más simples y arquetípicas. Pero Miss Bobbit es una de esas protagonistas que siempre recordarás envuelta en una historia bella y triste, breve e intensa que te llena el corazón y luego lo hiela.
Por eso en sus short stories en los que presenta a niños como protagonistas —esos niños ingenuos y puros, con personalidades fuertes— que se transformarán en el futuro en personajes complejos, me fascinan.

I really liked this small book. When I first started it, I didn’t get invested in the first story (the title story) for some reason because I had hit a reading slump and was forcing my way through this tiny book. I found the writing to be very quirky and the characters even more so. I usually like reading that sort of thing, but found myself disengaged with the story. I feel like I should have liked it, and perhaps with a reread, I will. Miss Bobbit’s character was certainly very intriguing (and is said to be the inspiration behind a certain Holly Golightly)
When I was partway out of my reading slump, I read the second story, A Christmas Memory, I started to love the book and really understood how Capote was trying to capture that childhood essence and innocence. The second story is so precious and written so wonderfully the I found myself transported to a time when life was blessed with simple pleasures. When things were uncomplicated in the little childhood memories that we all have and in the friendships that we make.
The last story, A Tree of Night, was definitely creepy. I’m not sure what the resolve – if there was one – at the end was. The story itself though was very interesting and I was waiting for things to happen, but in a way, they didn’t or I missed it.
Either way, I really enjoyed this little booklet of stories that convey a sense of child-like wonder, an innocence, and a quirkiness. This is my first Capote experience and now that I’ve read this, I think I have a sense of his writing style, and I think I like it.

Me leí estos cuentos en mi último viaje por Yorkshire. Me entretuvieron en el viaje, son ingeniosos y cortitos. El último trataba sobre un viaje y me hizo sentir como si estuviera metaleyendo mi vida😶🌫️🤯

"Sólo se puede odiar tanto cuando también se ama".
Es la primera vez que leo algo del autor y creo que es su primer relato/cuento. Capote tiene una formas de escribir que te cautiva desde la primera linea y hace que una historia tan corta se vuelva entrañable. También pude descubrir la capacidad que tiene el autor de retratar un tan mágicamente que hace transportarte a dicho lugar fácilmente. Sin lugar a duda quedo con un buen sabor en la boca después de leer Niños en su cumpleaños y con unas inmensas ganas de seguir descubriendo la magia que tiene este autor.
Recomendado para aquellos que como yo quieran empezar con este autor o para esos que aman leer un buen relato.

Uno de los relatos favoritos del autor. Creo que es una buena oportunidad de conocer el autor. Me gustó la capacidad de contar algo simple pero bien construído. No necesito alargar la trama, está todo. Y con su estilo propio y pronunciar la premisa que ciertas pistas dejo esperando a que se complete los hilos argumentales dando sentido de una manera organizada.
Sin duda me gustaría releerlo. Con ese humor bizarro en los pies de unos niños.

Es trata de una lectura fácil, muy sencilla de leer y de la que, todo sea dicho, gusta leer por su sencillez. Se lee muy rápido y en unos 30-45min lo tienes terminado.
La novela trata tópicos como el primer amor de verano y la amistad verdadera. Te permite echar un vistazo a la vida rural de un pueblo estadounidense del siglo pasado, pero no esperes una gran trama elaborada. Pueden consumir la lectura como si fuese una película corta que ves en televisión un domingo, pero la trama deja mucho que desear. Puedes terminar la lectura y te quedas tal cuál estabas.
No suspendo la obra porque da gusto de leer y los tópicos no están mal llevados, pero la indiferencia al terminar la obra y el final cortado por un suceso expontáneo y poco creíble me lleva a ponerle un 5.5/10.
Tengo entendido que toda la obra de T. Capote tiene varios periodos, algunos puramente literios, otros de no ficción y finalmente un género que vacila entre un periodismo-histórico y literatura, cosa que, a pesar de no haber leído más de él, no me llama demasiado la atención. Gran parte de la crítica valora esta historia como su mejor obra, pero espero que no sea cierto. Esperaré a leer más de él.

"Justo cuando deseábamos que sucdiera algo, algo sucedió. Miss Bobit apareció entre el polvo rojo del camino"
El relato es tan simple y tan hermoso. La narración es exquisita, me sorprende la facilidad que tiene Capote para contar historias, de una forma tan gentil y disfrutable. La historia en sí es corta, casi hasta anecdótica, pero en realidad mucho pasa, o mucho debió pasar.
"No es que yo considere que vivo aquí, no exactamente, siempre pienso en otro sitio, en un sitio donde no hay más que el baile, donde toda la gente baila por la calle y todo es tan hermoso como los niños en su cumpleaños"
Miss Bobit es una niña de 10 años, que llega al pueblo con su madre. Rápidamente despierta pasiones y es que es una persona (merece ser nombrada así y no reducida a un término que hace referencia a su etapa etaria) excepcional, tan despierta, tan vivaz.
"Ella era su parte extraña: el árbol de nogal, el gusto por los libros, querer a alguien lo suficiente para dejarse lastimar, las cosas que tenía miedo de mostrar a los demás"
Aunque es corto, el relato está lleno de reflexiones interesantes sobre valorar aquello que es realmente importante. Tan fugaz todo.

I spent this afternoon reading Children on Their Birthdays by Truman Capote, whilst the sun filtered through the window. It’s made up of 3 short stories. It was the perfect quick and beautiful read. Capote has a way of transporting the reader to the place he is describing, the dry and dusty street in midsummer, an old cabin, the dilapidated Southern train at midnight. His descriptions make the ordinary feel magical. He has a brilliant wit and crafts such wonderful sentences. I loved the first two stories: Children on Their Birthdays and A Christmas Memory. He portrays childhood, innocence and growing up so well. But the last story, A Tree of Night, left me feeling horribly uncomfortable. My discomfort mirrored that of the young female protagonist who meets a very weird couple on the train. Overall I loved reading this book but I think next time I’ll skip the last story. 4⭐️

A young city girl arrives in a small town and can't help but command everyone's attention.
I liked the characters in this. The straightforwardness of the writing, the simple details that tell so much. The no-nonesense attitude to it all, much like that of little Miss Bobbit.

Me hizo recordar esa fase del amor adolescente en la que idealizamos a la persona amada. Pienso en Lily Jane Bobbit, esa compañera de clase que es un enigma, pero con un carisma que atrae a todos. Es la chica que todos admiran a la distancia, cuya presencia ilumina la habitación, y que, aunque a veces toma decisiones un poco impulsivas, siempre parece tener un plan detrás. La forma en que los demás la ven, con esos ojos llenos de admiración y deseo, me recuerda a esa mezcla de inocencia y anhelo que define la adolescencia. Lily Jane es un reflejo de esos momentos en los que el amor se siente como un refugio, pero también como una ilusión.

واقعا ازش لذت بردم، هیچی نمیتونست کسالت یه عصر ابریو اینقدر خوب برطرف کنه، داستانا یه تم دارک و عجیبی دارن -همینجوری که توی توضیحات کتاب نوشته- این موضوعاتی که اینقدر جالب پردازش میشن بعضی جاها در عین روزمره بودن آدمو میخکوب میکنه، مثلا اون داستانش که توی مترو اتفاق میفتاد وقتی که مسئول بلیط اومد و دختره نتونست از دست اون دوتا کریپ خلاص کنه خودشو و لکنت گرفت به معنی واقعی کلمه فلج شده بودم، خوندن کتاب برام یه فلش بک به خوابام بود و یه جورایی این موضوع شبیه خوندن اولین کتابای النپو بود، یه گیجی مسخ کننده و چه کلمهای به کار ببرم که اوج شگفتیم رو برسونه؟
-ازونجایی که اونقدر ماتحتشو ندارم که کتاب زبان اصلیو بذارم کنارم و یه چشم به این باشه یه چشم به اون نمیتونم درمورد ترجمش نظر بدم، همینقدر که لپ داستانارو رسونده بود و دست تخیلم آزاد گذاشته بود بنظر ترجمه خوبی بود

CHILDREN ON THEIR BIRTHDAYS by Truman Capote -- This is a short, quick read of another of Capote's captivating tales, so well written, interesting, wonderful characters, strong, interesting plot, and in this tale, a rather sharp, abrupt, surprise ending. Some think the main character, Miss Bobbit, a child I thought reminiscent of a young Shirley Temple, was the inspiration for BREAKFAST AT TIFFANY's Holly Golightly. One critic writes of this work, "fascinating, disturbing, moving, funny," to which I agree.

This short story is set in the South in a stereotypical small town. Miss Bobbit and her mother come to town and take up residence in a rooming house. The Mom is a bit strange...she only eats raw food. Miss Bobbit steals the hearts of the young boys in the town. I won't spoil the story, but a lot happens in this short story. It is very well written and packs quite a story in a few pages.

Es un libro que me ha gustado mucho. Es difícil que te enganche desde un principio, pero en mi caso, cada vez que iba leyendo más y más del libro, iba entendiendo más la forma de expresarse del escritor. Capote, trata de capturar esa esencia e inocencia de la infancia en este libro. He disfrutado mucho este pequeño libro de historias que transmiten una sensación de vuelta a la infancia. Es increíble la capacidad que tiene el autor de hacer que una simple historia tan corta se vuelta una historia tan entrañable. La escritura que utiliza para redactar este libro es una escritura perfecta para hacer que te traslades a ese lugar en el momento que lo lees. Estas tres historias de este libro te dejan con un Vir sabor de boca y con más ganas de leer a este autor.

The tragedy of the American child and the confusion coming from the cultivation of the artificial period we call adolescence. Pair it with self obsession and material mania and you have the filth that is show business and the horror of this story. Capote does well to ground his stories and this is some of his better efforts as we find nuances within every line that burst with the rounded groundedness of the reality behind the abstract. A great work.

Pair it with self obsession and material mania and you have the filth that is show business and the horror of this story. Capote does well to ground his stories and this is some of his better efforts as we find nuances within every line that burst with the rounded groundedness of the reality behind the abstract. A great work.

Really evocative of the town, time and the community with captivating prose and character building. Reading this and waiting for the ending I was reminiscent of so many other young, doomed literary girls that could have been Miss Bobbit in another life, The Virgin Suicides, Lolita, Carrie, even movies like American Beauty and Thirteen. It made the story even more profoundly sad for me, but certainly felt ahead of its time.

من نثر ترومن کاپوتی رو خیلی دوست دارم و کتابهاش برام حال و هوای خوشی دارن . نثر کاپوتی خیلی خودمونی روان و دوست داشتنی هست . کاپوتی همیشه کتابهاش شخصیت پردازی های قوی ای دارن از جمله این کتاب . کتاب از چند داستان تشکیل شده . من داستان دوم رو خیلی دوست داشتم که درباره یک دختر بچه کاریزماتیک هست . من این کتاب رو به شکل صوتی گوش دادم و گویندگی کتاب هم عالی بود 👌👌

Truman capote is one of the greatest wordsmiths of the 20th century and is definitely worth a read from anyone who likes literature and language. These short stories are wonderfully accessible, as well as being detailed, dark, funny brilliant little time capsules.
