Devil Inside

From Devil “Jacob had no doubt as to what it was. It was the night-Beast under his bed, that lurked in his closet – the Beast that now raged before him, out in the light of day. It had escaped.”In the tradition of EC Comics, The Twilight Zone and Tales From The Darkside, Devil Inside is a spine-chilling short horror story that will leave you wanting more. Graphic and descriptive, this psychological horror tale winds itself around a disturbed young boy who discovers that when you make a wish, you better make sure you really want it. After all, monsters are sometimes recommended for mature readers. Contains scenes of Horror, Violence, and domestic abuse, M15+"William Cook tells a gruesome story with a sense of authenticity that makes you question with considerable unease if it really is fiction, after all." – Graham Masterton, author of The Manitou and Descendant“This man is simply scary. There is both a clinical thoroughness and a heartfelt emotional thoroughness to his writing. He manages to shock as well as empathize, to scare as well as acclimatize, yet beneath it all is a well read intelligence that demands to be engaged. I loved Blood Related. Ordinarily I hate serial killer stories, but William Cook won me over. He is a unique and innovative talent.” – Joe McKinney, Bram Stoker Award-winning author of Flesh Eaters and Dog DaysAbout King Billy Publications King Billy Publications exclusively publish the dark literary fiction and psychological horror stories of William Cook. Had to think about the old INXS song with the same title when approaching this tale. We have Jacob, an outsider who suffers from his drinking parents and a mean school teacher. The situation changes when he meets a monster under his bed. At first he's afraid but soon he sees the advantages of this special circumstance. Is the monster a danger to Jacob or to someone else? What is meant with "devil inside"? Fast paced, uncanny horror with some domestic violence and gore. Nothing against it. Quite enjoyed the fluent story with its twist at the end and can really recommend it.

The main problem with kindle books is pretty much the same as with the city streets in medieval times, it can occasionally get flooded with crap. Just because someone thinks they can write, doesn't always mean they can or should impose their works on others, but free is free and sometimes (not always and not even that often, but sometimes) this is exactly what happens. Unoriginal and far from well written short story and several poems of the same quality comprise this short read by a New Zealand author. There is also a preview for his next novel, which shows no improvement whatsoever. Don't waste your time.

William Cook has a wonderful talent with disturbed psychologies. Now normally, this would not be a compliment, but for a horror writer I suspect that he will appreciate it. In his short story, “Devil Inside,” Cook explores the symbiotic relationship between real and imagined horror through the eyes of an abused child.

Child abuse is an often overused trope to frame nightmares, but in this case Cook gives it a fresh spin by blurring the lines between reality and fantasy. He explores those dark places of the mind where real fear churns and morphs into something far worse. Psychologists work very hard to bring abused children back from their nightmares, but Cook examines that place that cannot be fixed. What happens when a child can no longer process the horrors? Where does the fear gnawing in the dark go? Can fears feel so intense, so real, that they in turn become real? This short story explores those deeply frightening questions and like all great horror, leaves us wondering as to the answers.

This story also includes several interesting pieces of dark poetry and a sample of Cook’s psychological serial killer novel Blood Related. If you’ve never read Cook’s work, start here. This is a fantastic introduction to his skill with dark, twisted minds.

Hey wait, wait. Wait for a moment here. Of course it was a very short story to read but seriously what was that? I would like to say for me it was really unexpected…

How come a too short story like this could fright me? No seriously, I really enjoyed it. I just happened to look for a quick short story and somehow by the internet I found this. Didn't thought that it would entertain me like this…

1. “Jacob held his breath, mind racing, all he could hear was the beating of his heart and the faint drip, drip, drip of blood as it pooled under the buzzing TV set.”...

2. “As he climbed, Jacob knew the Beast was waiting for him in his room. It was where it had always been and he took comfort from this knowledge, that he was not alone.”...

The concept of this short story was brilliant. I don't know but this short story just clicked my momentum, if you know what I mean. There's that monster who was hiding under the bed of Jacob’s room. Well what happened next after that was mysteriously I would use the word interesting to read. Never mind of that disturbing side from this story. But I really liked it. Hoping for more from this author to read his work again…

4 out of 5...

Devil Inside is the tale of a young, underachieving boy who suffers abuse at the hands of his drunken father and a lack of attention from his mother, who is also a heavy drinker. Taunts from his teacher compound the issue, and on top of all this, he is having nightmares about a terrible, dark creature as black as night, with red piercing eyes. Is this creature only a dream, or is it a demonic protector sent to watch over the boy and punish those who do him harm?
A wonderful tale, told with William Cook's usual attention to gory detail. There are 4 bonus poems and an excerpt from his novel, "Blood Related" too, so I urge any potential reader to take a look into the dark world of William Cook's imagination. You won't be disappointed in what you read!

lol.. wow really really good short story that just leaves you hanging with your mouth open in total shock.
Kinda like " yeah I didn't see that coming"

Hard to say when you read a short story and you get to the end you think,, GOD how I wish this wasn't short but a good nice full length novel.

BUT !!!! would it have had the same impact that the author William Cook was able to give with it being such as it is now.. short story.

Great work !!

It had some good imagery near the end, but there wasn't much build up at all. A key part of horror is building up the tension and atmosphere and that was severely lacking in this story.

It has a lot of potential and if the author revisits it and expands on things, it could be a truly great story.
