Rate this book
It’s 2088, and having testified in a gangland murder trial, nowhere on Earth is safe for Louise. Witness Protection has organized a new identity and a marriage contract for her on the mining colony of Esther, one of the moons circling Jupiter. The man who meets her there is not the groom she expected.

Adam Elliot is neither sweet nor sincere, and he looks like he was hosed off a barroom floor. But soon a memorial service reveals Adam’s soft underbelly. Throw some stellar sex into the mix and the two decide that maybe marriage to each other might not be so bad after all.

But an assassin is already at work. A deadly game of cat and mouse ensues on the planet’s frozen surface. Louise is determined to live long enough to draw the maniac away from the husband she might just have fallen for.

Re-reading November 2016
Still 4 stars. The story held up well with just the right amount of suspense and romance to satisfy. I wish Kylie Scott would write more sci-fi!

Originally read 2013
Louise lands herself in the witness protection program - not just any program mind you - an off world program - for testifying against a gangster who murdered her boyfriend. A gangster who wants her dead. Now she's not only off world and changed her appearance, she's married to a perfect stranger, and NOT the one she had been expecting!

Adam and Louise's intended groom were involved in a huge mining explosion and her groom suffered hideous wounds and died almost instantly. Adam was the "next in line" for a wife so her contract was transferred to him. (Men outnumber women 8 to 1 on the colony) Their first meeting left a lot to be desired and neither one thought this marriage of convenience would make it, but a tender moment at a memorial service changed both their opinions. Now just as they are starting to get to know one another, Louise's past returns to haunt her.

Really good read. I loved the idea of an off-planet witness protection program coupled with my favorite trope - a marriage of convenience. Good dialog, the sexy times were HAWT and the pacing just right. My only complaint was that it wasn't longer!

Review for Colonist's Wife.

It’s 2088 and Louise has been put into a witness protection program, but in space. She is being hunted by a murdering gang member on Earth, and now she's a space bride to a stranger named Adam.

Positives:
A marriage of convenience
Forced proximity
Sci-fi romance
Strong h
Steamy

Negatives:
Needed more character development
Insta-dislike to insta-love in less than four days

Four stars for Colonist's Wife and one for Hearts a Mess. (that story was a mess!)

As always, Elena Wolfe does a wonderful job of narrating.

The h, in a witness protection program on earth, becomes an inter-planetary mail-order bride to the H on a dreary, icy moon somewhere in the solar system. She's contracted to a smiling, easy going guy but arrives to learn that her intended has died and now she's to go with the next guy on the list - a surly, smelly drunk. She baulks but can't run as her drop off shuttle has flown away.
From the initial insta-n-mutual dislike and awkwardness, they end up in bed/shower within 2-3 days and things look up. And we move on to insta-lust/love in the next 2-3 days.

I like the author's inserting of subtle wit here and there that makes you smile and appreciate every now and then. My first book by her as I'm not a sci-rom fan but will surely read more by her.

I am a huge Kylie Scott fan so I bought this one without even reading an excerpt. My conclusion? I liked this book, but not as much as I liked her zombie books. I think this was primarily because it was shorter, which meant there was less time to build tension or develop the characters. This is a common issue with shorter books, so no huge surprise there. Usually I avoid them but I like the author so much I decided to break my own rule.

One of Scott's real strengths as a writer is her world building. Colonist's Wife delivers on that in a big way. I hope she has plans to write more in this series because I caught glimpses of an entire reality I'd love to explore.

So - solid book, worth buying, but just stay aware that a shorter novel has less room for character development by definition.

İçeriğe dair @ilknur a.k.a iko’cuğuma geçtiğim özeti geçeyim sizlere de:

This was an average read for SFR. The couple fell in love too quickly, and the narrative jumps forward at times. The world building is negligible, which is too bad. I was expecting more after reading Ms. Scott's zombie books. Frankly, I was lost for part of this book, and then the couple falls in love hard and fast. Even with the uneven delivery, there was enough punch to the characters and enough suspense to the storyline that I kept reading this short novella.

I just re-read this one and liked it better the second time.

OK so third time revisiting this one. I ended up getting the audiobook (read by Elena Wolf) and this story has really grown on me. I still think Adam is a bit immature, but Louise doesn't let him get away with anything!

Louise and Adam. Louise is in the futuristic version of witsec on the run from some bad dudes who murdered her lover. I don't know why witsec would have her enter an arranged marriage to a stranger on a moon that is an icy hell on a good day. Anyways, her original husband-to-be has recently died and she is faced with Adam, the next guy on the marriage list. Adam is a complete and utter ass to her for the first couple days. They're whole getting to know you period is only a week long. Rather than make any effort to talk to his new wife, he makes a snap judgment and decides he doesn't like her. Louise, who is used to getting the sh*t end of the stick, tries to take everything in stride and make the best of it. All the while still feeling fearful that her past will somehow follow her. Adam just does his best to avoid her. I found this strange for a man who had put his name on the list for marriage. The author tries to make excuses for him, but it was still kinda cowardly. And I still don't like Rose. The writing is just a pale shadow of the wit found in her Stage Dive series.
I love novella's but maybe this one needed to be a bit longer.

The beginning of the book just grabbed me and I enjoyed everything up until the ending which I was confused by. He knew the secrets and the reason for them but still wasn't okay with it until months later. Good book though, even with that complaint.

This was a strange book. From this review, it will seem as if I didn't like it.
On the contrary, I really enjoyed it & was left with warm fuzzies at the end.
I think this was all due to the author's skill because the hero of the story was an absolute ass for 75% of the book in my opinion.

*** SPOILERS ***

After having spent the last three months on a shuttle heading towards a mining moon named Esther that orbits Jupiter, Jo is expecting to find the new husband she had married (but never met) from Earth before leaving. Jo has a new identity calling herself Louise.

When Louise/Jo exits the shuttle, she finds cold, gritty weather and not the handsome dimpled Gideon waiting for her - but a man with bloodshot eyes, three day beard growth and stinking of alcohol. He introduces himself as Adam Elliot. When Louise/Jo shows no response - he informs her that Gideon has been dead for over a month and Adam is Gideon's replacement - as her husband.

Louise's reaction is not positive. Adam's bar-room floor stench, lack of manners and aggravated manner along with the cold, barren wasteland make her want to go home to face death rather than the torture of this man's company.

Adam, is feeling equally poleaxed. He is upset no one had informed Louise about the change in marriage contracts and can see she doesn't care for him. Her shuttle arrived two days early right in the middle of his wedding shower/bachelor party.

Adam immediately begins thinking of her as "Princess". He has recently been released from some kind of medical ward. Once he inherited the marriage contract from Gideon's death, he also inherited the couples suite in the housing development. When they get there, it's the mess he left it, but his irritation has him communicating nothing to Louise.

Adam was in the explosion/fire that claimed Gideon's life. He is also a war vet. He's suffering from PTSD on multiple fronts and has a buttload of baggage.

Louise is on Esther in hiding. A District Attorney back on Eath arranged for her new identity and got her to this moon. She is in some kind of witness protection as a murder witness.

Adam's best friend Taka and wife Rose are already against Louise on behalf of their friend Adam. Adam is missing marriage counseling sessions and Louise is getting asked by the impersonal counselor if they have begun being "physically intimate" yet.

It isn't until a memorial for the two dead miners that Adam and Louise connect. She senses his discomfort at the memorial and rescues him by dragging him back to their rooms. Adam is a pretty wimpy hero/lead up until now...and the thread continues. He avoids her by getting into the shower. Louise decides to follow him in and apologize for snapping at him. She gets into the shower with him and they have a very stilted conversation.

"What are you waiting for, Adam?"
"For you to make the first move."
"I came in here."
"The second one then."

See? Wimpy hero. At least he goes down on her in the shower. They have shower sex, compliment each other on it and thus begins the tentative relationship of two wounded people.

Adam's best friend's wife, Rose, doesn't like Louise and makes it clear to Louise causing discomfort. It's clear to Louise that Rose and Adam have some kind of history, or at least history of feelings. Rose is very touchy-feely with Adam during a shared dinner.
Adam doesn't even seem to notice Louise's treatment by Rose or Louise's discomfort.
Adam screws up by telling Rose about intimate details of his and Louise's sex life which causes their first fight.
She leaves Adam, Rose and Taka to go cool off in the garden. Adam finds her there.
But once again Wimpy hero is in effect:
"What are you doing here Adam?"
"Truthfully? To come up with a way to apologize to you without having to actually apologize."
Then when he finally does apologize, he includes his demeaning nickname for her:
"Princess, I'm sorry. I was an ass."

Believe it or not, he manages to talk his way back into her good graces, although I still think she could have been a little rougher on him. He pulls out the needy-man card - and she accepts it. They make up.

As it turns out, Adam killed someone when he was 17. After he was acquitted, he was disowned by his family then joined the Army. He made his way into special ops. He has all kinds of secrets from Louise, but when he realizes she is keeping secrets from him, he broods on it in the bar. Adam gets into a fight his his Chief. His friends hold an "intervention" for him because he drinks too much.
This causes him to miss the second marriage counseling appointment with his wife. Louise is fed up. He talks his way back into her graces again.

The both have nightmares. Louise wakes one night after Adam punches her in the face during his nightmare. She comforts him with sex.
The next day, Adam contacts his Chief who was also in the Army with him and has him run a deep background check on Louise.

When Louise wakes alone in bed, she is furious at her husband for not staying to "work out" the accidental hit to her face or his nightmares. Later she receives a communication from the DA who put her in hiding. The communication has all of Adam's military information. The DA then orders her on the next transport to Earth as Adam's military history isn't good for keeping a low profile in her witness protection. She goes into protective custody & Adam is denied the right to see her. Adam and his friends discuss Louise's behavior. They realize she is on the run from something, but Adam is still unable to even speak to her.

Louise is ambushed by an operative for "the bad guys" while she is in protective security. She escapes the bad guy and ends up on the surface running from him. The surface is bitterly cold and she will die from exposure shortly. She hears Adam is following her and the killer. In an effort to save Adam from the bad guys attention, she yells for the bad guy and runs. She gets shot in the back.
Before passing out she sees the bad guy fall to the ground next to her.

Next chapter is listed as "Day One hundred Sixty Eight" and begins with Louise recalling that Adam boarded a shuttle the day after she was shot & not having heard from him since. She thinks she has been abandoned by her husband. No one will give her any information about Adam and she gets pity from people when she tears up.

The a-hole surprises her at their home and tells her the person who put a contract on her head is now dead. He realizes she is very pregnant. They love each other....etc.

HEA.

This was a weird story, which only illustrates how good an author Kylie Scott is. She takes two pretty flawed characters and weaves a beautiful love story with them. I couldn't stand Adam. He was so very self centered throughout this book, seldom ever thinking of how Louise felt or what she needed. He jumped to wrong conclusions about her frequently and seemed very prideful and angry.
Louise is very untrusting and could be a bit of a doormat at times, having pity parties for herself. Never the less, they manage to elevate each other as a couple.
This story is wonderful - and I absolutely recommend it.
You will be left with warm fuzzies at the end.

I really enjoyed this one!

Of course there is a bit of insta-love after a few days, because this is a novella. But I really liked Adam and Louise together. This was another novella I wish was a book. I thought their conflicts were resolved well and nothing was really frustrating about it.

Overall, a fun and spicy quick read.

First Kylie Scott book and I'm not sure what to conclude of this journey.
Don't know if other of her works are similar, but this one was odd.

It’s 2088. Louise testified for murder and now she's in danger on Earth. So, the Witness protection program grants her a new start. A fresh new identity and a marriage contract on the mining colony of Esther.
Adam Elliot is the lucky guy! And both of them don't hit it off as smoothly as one would hope. Of course, this is the least of Louise's problems, because an assassin might be coming for her.

SFR with a pinch of erotic steam, dabbed with some suspense, a teaspoon of drama and a bit of garnished action at the very end.

description

I wasn't exactly thrilled by it, but it held my attention until the end of the book. The suspense and defined personalities of the characters were pretty well achieved. The story itself had a little bit of everything, as I stated before.
The characters were not fully developed, but well introduced and appealing. I didn't feel like they were one dimensional for such a short book. But they weren't my favorite couple either... I did like their minor backgrounds and chemistry. It was enough to keep me hooked.
The plot was fairly predictable, but it wasn't that obvious to make my eyes roll. Do you know that moment?

description
DID NOT HAPPEN HERE!
What I didn't like, was the emotional relationship between the MC's. It seemed a little forced and odd. Even...
description
She was trying too hard, went from cold and bitchy, to I'm horny. Maybe I like this guy mode...
And he?
He was a mixture of a shy passive-dickhead. Can I say that? Well its too late to go back now...
So it was confusing and odd because you're never 100% sure of what the characters feel for each other, no matter how many excuses or information the author gives. There is no natural fulfilling evolution of the romance/attraction to make the reader understand why they care for each other. Their actions confuse me...
The pace is definitely related to the topic above. It was shaky and went full speed at the end. So rather than enjoy the HEA, you're left with questions and weird feelings inside.

It's an acceptable read to entertain?
YES
Is it a memorable read? NO
Not too complicated. Not a waste of time either. I would say its a recommendable read, but looking forward to a better read from this author.
I bid you farewell, may your next reads be fabulous!

No spoilers and colorful language abound!

Eh. I normally have no issue dropping myself into Scott's writing, accepting all that she presents with ease. Post apocalyptic smut? Yes. Weird arranged marriage on one of Jupiter's moons? Nah, bro.

Marriage of convenience + FMC has a secret identity + futuristic setting? This is the romance I didn’t know I needed.

I didn’t realise Kylie Scott wrote sci-fi romances, so this was a pleasant surprise. The novella length meant it felt a little insta-love on the relationship development front, but it was still a really good read. Simple but engaging story, great characters (we got a brave but wounded bird FMC and possessive/protective MMC) and steamy scenes. I really enjoyed this.

The Colonist’s Wife by Kylie Scott is a science fiction romance, heavy in the romance. There’s miners, danger, explosions, and even horticulture within this book. There’s plenty of things to go around, in terms of enjoying a good science fiction romp towards an alien planet named Esther (I believe), and in colonization. Mail order brides set in space is always an interesting trope that I like reading, and I found Adam and Louise both likable characters, despite each of them having their own flaws.

The romance was easily one of my favorites as well, and this scifi romance novel soared to the top of my favorites list. I’ve barely read anything by Kylie Scott, but this author has made me sit up and take notice. Sadly, the author doesn’t appear to have a lot in terms of scifi romance just yet, but I hope that will soon change.

This story was well written, fast paced, and with plenty of romance. The setting was intriguing, and I found the characters flaws to be realistic as well as carefully handled. I liked how each character was fleshed out in the story. Louise’s tragic backstory was one I’d read, but in a different set up than what I was familiar with. I liked the side characters, as well as the overall plot. And the flow of the story was smooth, causing me to finish the book in one sitting.

4/5 stars for a new to me author, one that I’m sure that I’ll be enjoying a lot more in the future. I’ll keep a look out for this author, and their other works, as well as recommend them to those on my friends list who adores scifi romance as much as I do. This is a good, standalone scifi romance that I’m sure all of you will thoroughly enjoy.

This novella is a real downer

It was extremely hard for me to become immersed in this futuristic, arranged-marriage, romance novella. I had trouble suspending disbelief and relating to the protagonists. The story is set only 66 years in the future in 2088, but we are expected to accept that there has been an astronomical expansion in space technology and emergency medical care (especially for burns) compared to today’s world. Personally, I find it impossible to credit that there would have been an adequate amount of government funding sufficient to make the requisite, extreme amount of scientific advances happen in the relatively short amount of time between now and then.

The main action of this story occurs on an ugly moon of Venus with a desolate, desert environment. Both protagonists are withdrawn and depressed, and with very good reason. Who would want to live in such an awful place? It seems more like a penal colony than somewhere people would voluntarily exile themselves. Unfortunately, depressed people are a real downer to read about.

Louise is in the witness protection program and is sent to a mining colony as a bride. Once there she discovers her groom is dead and another was selected to take his place. Adam Elliot is the replacement.

I noticed this on a list somewhere here on Goodreads and since I really like Kylie Scott's Contemporary Romances I thought I'd probably like this. I have been on a Sci-fi Romance roll lately. But it's not purchasable. I found it finally on Wattpad. I liked it okay but it had so much more potential. If it was expanded on I think it could be really good.

An early novella from Ellora's Cave republished with a much better cover and now on Kindle Unlimited. [Digression: I'm really enjoying finding these early stories originally published by Harlequin or Ellora's Cave or the like re-published on Amazon and available on KU. They are fun and uncomplicated and interesting looks at the development of some of my favorite m/f writers. However, I probably wouldn't want to buy them as they were written to fit the format/guidelines required by those publishers.]

I definitely saw hints of the characteristics of Kylie Scott's current writing. Fun, short read with heat between the two MCs and the insta-love so characteristic of EC and, actually, Scott's style of writing.

Louise and Adam have a rough journey together and I really love the way that Kylie scott paces this story.

One minute your married to one man then next his best friend - Your world is in disary and your running for your life. What more can go wrong ?

I had to giggle to myself - Adam and Louise's first impression would be like meeting an ogre who has just climbed out of the mudpit , lol.

I myself had to wander what pen he crawled out of from the vivid stench wafting out of the pages lol. But = nothing a little scrubbin cant fix !

You certainly can feel the attraction these two have, Its spine tingling - smokin hot and romantic all in one. But it certainly wasn't love at first sight.

Im not going into the storyline much - all I have to say is YOU MUST READ IT.

OKKKK ONE TEASER - But that shower scene - I think I needed a quick shower really fast - I would've jumped in and scrubbed his back for him - even washed his dam hair (( grins ))

At just under 90 pages long I cant beleive how many details were put into the storyline that Kylie has written. It was like a rollercoaster ride at every page turn something kept me on track. Whether it be the humour, the loving, the romance, or the suspense this book wasnt short of any.

Colonist's Wife - has A little humour, mystery, romance, hot lovin ,warm fuzzies, and of course an edge ;) and did I say hot sexin ....

The world that Kylie created is unique and well put forth. The vivid descriptions will have you eagerly reading till the very last page.

I feel fairly confident in saying that you’re gong to like this one. I for one have loved all Kylie scott's books ;) It’s beautifully romantic at times, suspenseful - wonderfully steamy and of course with a compelling storyline what more could you want .!!

I liked it, even though it definitely needed some more to it. If there was even just 20-50ish pages more I think it would have been pretty great. Because of the length there's not much fleshing out of the characters, especially with the large amount of sex scenes compared to anything else in this book. That all said, I enjoyed reading it.

Basically it's a mail-order bride story set in space. There's some good stuff here, a solid story concept and writing - but it never hangs together. Like maybe it was supposed to be a longer story but someone told the author to make it a novella. There's things here not really fleshed out well and the transitions between scenes often feels uneven (as in "Oh, so this is happening now? What happened to where we left off?"). The world building is basically non-existent (the characters favorite exclamation is either "gods" or "thank the gods" and there's no mention of why - it just sounds weird otherwise) and the back story of both hero and heroine are in parts dumped on the reader and then simultaneous never fleshed out well. The whole thing feels incomplete.

I was worried at first that Adam and Louise wouldn't be able to get over the rocky start to their marriage. Thankfully, the sexual attraction kicks in and they start getting closer.

I loved the concept of this story...I just wanted more details. How did Louise's first husband get killed? What did Bon and Adam do during the time they were away? Both MC's back stories could use some more fleshing out.

The ending and twist felt very sudden to me. I could have used more build-up and a less abrupt ending. A sequel would definitely be appreciated.

I really liked this one, my only complaint is I wanted the animosity between Louise and Adam to last longer. I felt like they fell in love too quickly and that potential reasons for mistrust and a little extra drama went under utilized. That being said, I enjoyed the characters and the sexy times were super sexy and believable.

Title aside because I don’t even know how colonists come into play in all this, so it feels like a misguided title, this story is just bad. It’s so bland.

I know it’s a novella, but I saw that Elena Wolfe narrated the audiobook under this pseudonym and thought this would be darker? The heroine is on the run from Earth and under a new name as a mail order bride in space and the husband is…human? He’s the replacement after the guy who had been courting her died. Wish the romance had more tension to it but there wasn’t anything holding it together.

Got to chapter 4 in the audiobook, and even as short as this book is, it’s just not worth continuing on.

This is a mail order bride set in the future, and she is also in a witness protection program. The narration is good, the book short. I still got a good feel for place and characters. But yes, 7 days IS super short for falling in love this deeply ;-)

This was a good story. I liked both Louise and Adam and liked the premise of the story.

Louise is a woman who's late husband got her involved in a situation that had her testifying against bad guys and going in to witness protection. In the future the best option for disappearing is to become a contract bride on another planet that's being colonized. She thinks she knows the husband she's going to meet but when she arrives she's informed that her intended died and she's now married to a completely different man.

Adam's a good guy but has gone through a lot in his past, the kind of stuff that has left him with nightmares. He is a colonist and was surprised to find out he's getting a wife. He's wanted one after seeing his best friend's happiness with his wife but worries how things will work. Unfortunately, when his new wife shows up 2 days early Adam doesn't make the best impression.

When Louise meets Adam at the shuttle she arrived on he looks and smells like he's just risen from a barroom floor after a night of hard partying. She's shocked to find out her intended husband is dead and had been replaced by Adam and isn't sure what to think by his state and smell. She's still willing to make a go at things with him but Adam sees her expression when she first finds out he's her new husband and decides that she's a princess and they have no chance at making it work. For the first couple days their relationship consists of Adam avoiding Louise for the most part. They do finally break the ice (mostly thanks to Louise) and they have some hot sex which leads to things going better between them. They start exploring their attraction and growing their relationship and even share a few tender moments. There's a few conflicts during their time together but they're doing pretty good at working through things when her past comes calling. There's some drama and a separation before everything is settled but in the end, Louise and Adam are together and starting their HEA.

This was an enjoyable story. I liked both Louise and Adam a lot and the story was interesting. I think the main issue I had with the story was a couple times during the story when I didn't understand the reasoning at all. Overall it was a good story though and I'm glad I read it. :D
