He is haunted by the regrets of a shady past and now lives each day and night with an isolated soul.

A mighty power is awakening, wreaking havoc on the supernatural world. The 13 Kings, their queens, the werewolf nation, and the witch covens with their high leader, Lalura Chantelle, must band together and stand strong in the face of a dawning nightmare that threatens the very fabric of all they hold dear… and from which none may escape.

This was quite an interesting read, but probably my least favorite of the series. The world-building and paranormal aspects were done well, but the romance was severely lacking. I don't remember the first two books having such lacking aspects. I enjoyed the setup of the romance but it just didn't deliver or satisfy me in the way that I would have wished for. The second half of the story is much better but I found the plot of the relationship to be disjointed in the first half of the story. I found the narration to be solid for this one and I have liked this narrator in the past though. I will be continuing this series.
the warlock king is a great addition to the kings series , full of action ,intrigue and romance loved seeing Jason the warlock king in a more positive , softer light and Chloe of the 28 made him a fab queen looking forward to seeing where this series. Is heading, the king series just keeps getting better and better.
I am a reader not really a reviewer but the author Heather Killough Walden is an Author whose books hold a special place in my heart and on my keepers shelf, I just have to share the goodness all around. I received an email from Amazon on Valentine’s Day free gift from HKW - Warlock King! (Thank you Buddy and the powers that be ;))I kind a shed a tear....of JOY! HKW does it again! And my mind is reeling in excitement for the next book, OH LORD WHAT A RIDE. Where to start? HKW King Series is a spinoff from her captivating BBW series BIG BAD WOLF! (notice the CAPS) and trust me they are Big and Badass characters ;) that I feel Dear reader, it is imperative to read these to introduce characters that link into the King Series. But trust me you’ll love them. Warlock King is the Third of HKW King Series. And it is captivating, mind blowing and takes you on a ride on the supernatural express train ;) hehe that will leave you breathless and wanting more. I don’t want to give away the story away, but I will say this, HKW builds a world that as you read you can literally feel her words turn into a movie, even on her FB she puts up pictures of beautiful scenes/pictures/scenery of moments in a book, and for me those moments take you on a journey you see and walk with her…What an Author! What commitment to her craft! What a world builder I am not very good at reviewing but I know this, when a book makes you feel and see a world of not only black and white but neutrals and in between. That black isn’t so black, dark or evil. That Goblins, Phantoms all have a story to tell. All Thirteen Kings of different factions and supernatural beings, You just have to read this and know their journeys of trials, tribulations and love…A MUST BUY!
Jason Alberich king of the warlocks is on the trail of Chloe Septeran, who is an akyri and the future queen of Jason Alberich. But Chloe has other ideas and is on the run. Akyri rely on a warlock for their magic, which feeds an Akyri's hunger, without that they are an empty void. But Chloe has no intentions of serving a warlock even if he is the king. So her hunger has gone unanswered for many years.
This is such a well written and thought out book. the world building is spectacular and totally fascinating. full of action adventure and romance the author takes the reader on a rip roaring ride. There's never a dull moment. featuring characters from the previous two books as well. Jason is the third king who has found his queen albeit a reluctant one. But there are dark forces at work that are determined to destroy the kings and more importantly their queens. Jason has not always been on the side of right, some still do not fully trust him. His power and magic are immense. Chloe is no ordinary akyri either. We also find out more of the dark forces who are working against the thirteen kings. My only complaint is that we have to wait for the next book.
I started to read Heather's books through the Big Bad Wolf series and really enjoyed them all - from there I progressed to this series and again, she didn't let me down. I don't love them 'quite' as much as the Big Bad Wolf books, but it's a close thing!
I'd been looking forward to this one in particular. The whole idea of a previous 'baddie' having a shot at redemption through finding his soulmate (his Warlock Queen in this case) had me hooked. The fact that said future Queen was on the run from him just added to the appeal!
As usual, the author provided her readers with a wild adventure and some amazing descriptions that vividly brought the characters and scene-setting into focus.
I also loved the seemingly innocent observations that came from her characters. They regularly made me smile and gave depth to them (and maybe a hint about the author's own feelings?) My personal favourite: 'A Shelby was rarely treated with such a lack of care. It was too loved by its owner and too expensive to be purchased by twenty-year-old speed demons suffering from hormonal overfeed and a tragic lack of common sense.' Hmm, so maybe that shows a love for speed machines and a frustration with boy racers?
And that's what I like about this author's work - the layers and little details that keep the reader entertained with figuring out what's happening 'below' the surface of the story.
So why a 4.5stars and not a 5star? Well... I just felt there should have been more about the relationship and the connection between this King and his Queen. Maybe that's me being too greedy, but there was such a lot going on with the plot, with questions left open for the rest of the series and action scenes that were punchy and exciting, that the growing closeness and romance side of the relationship got a little lost in amongst it all (for me) - this didn't spoil the story, but it left me wanting 'just a bit more' in that regard - I didn't get that feeling from Roman and Evie/Thanatos and Siobhan in the previous two books.
That said, as with the rest of Heather Killough-Walden's stories, I highly recommend this book to anyone who is a paranormal romance fan and I'm looking forward to reading the next in series, because I'm definitely hooked!
I love Heather's books....haven't read them all yet but I really do enjoy her work :) The Warlock King is the first I've actually read in the King Series but even though it was not the first book I didn't get lost at all. Heather does a great job of pulling you into the story with relevant information so you aren't lost, even if your in the 4th book in a series or the 7th :) Only really talented authors can pull that off.
There are 13 Kings and 13 Queens (on a chessboard nonetheless) The Kings are of various races like Warlock, Vampire, Phantom, Goblin and so forth. The Queens are special themselves and even though its been what seems like forever for all the Kings, once the first Queen was found, now they are finding the others... (Chloe was the Warlocks Queen) and Jason is the Warlock King. Their story is pretty fascinating as Chloe knows exactly who Jason is...after a chance encounter she knows she's his Queen and she spends that time running. Akyri live off their mates power so to speak...it fills a void in them....but she doesn't want to be a servant to anyone and wants to make her own choices...so she continues to run, basically starving herself in the process. She can't hide from her King though and throughout the book he'll randomly pop in, just to show her that she can't hide.
There's some mysteries to solve as she tries to find ways to feed herself, her magical side without turning to Jason. She goes on some chases to try and solve the mystery. Of course what she doesn't know is that Jason is having her followed/protected everywhere she goes (which is a good thing, you'll see.)
Will Chloe run forever and risk combusting into stardust? Or will she run to Jason and embrace his dark side that frightens her?
The Warlock King, book four in the series made me reconsider some things when I rate HK-W stories.
The plot gets 4* from me because it has me wanting to know more about the world and how it unfolds. The delivery on the other hand gets 1* because honestly there are times when I wonder what was she thinking or not...
Chloe saw and run away from Jason but he kept track of her location at all times, since she is his queen.
Chloe is an Akyri that needs feed off the energy of a warlock in order to survive. But she doesn't want to be a slave to a warlock and prefers to "starve" herself. At the same time she in one of the 28 (whatever that means) so she is powerful on her own, hence the qualification to be queen. Eventual she is described as a black whole who keeps feeding on energy.
When Jason goes after her she runs away and denies what they all know and want.
At this point there was no romantic development whatsoever between Jason and Chloe except few meets. They know nothing of each other except that he is a king warlock that needs an Akyri/ his Queen and the other way around. I have missed a depth to their encounters, something anything....
And then I want to ask Disneyland???!!! Really? What the hell was that thing? For goodness sake a train trip? To what end? I feel like I am in a bad movie...then I have all the other characters with their daily dramas who could have had a back seat to the romance between Jason and Chloe....instead I got a D/S attempt.
The plot as a whole, again, is great and has me interested. Otherwise I would have stopped long tome ago these series.
The Warlock King is book 3 in 'The Kings' series by Heather Killough-Walden.
Following on from The Phantom King, this book is Jason & Chloe's story.
Heather really ramps up the intrigue and mystery in this latest instalment. The story is fast paced, full of twists & turns, surprises, new characters (as well as some old friends!) and suspense... Heather left us holding our breath with a real cliffhanger of an ending, will be interesting to see how thing develop in the next book - The Goblin King
Although I imagine you could read the book without having read The Vampire or Phantom King, I honestly think you would enjoy and understand the story more if you started the series from the beginning!!!
Second reading - warning: this book ends on a cliff hanger that gets resolved in the next book, The Goblin King.
There is a lot going on in this particular story. A lot of the history of the 13 Kings comes up, we learn more about Ophelia and her tormentor, more about who is behind wanting Roman and his queen dead, and more about the 13 kings themselves.
Romance does occur in the story as The Warlock King follows his Queen. Chloe, a creature of Stardust in human form has been around a lot longer than human-kind. She is so used to starving (she eats magic) that when Jason, The Warlock King offers her his magic, she runs scared. Jason follows but he never pressures Chloe. It is Chloe who realises that she wants... needs Jason.
A very good story. So much so I did not mind the cliff hanger.

Up until now, Heather Killough-Walden has been a favorite Kindle find. I don't know what happened, but this is a very poorly written book, and I'm sincerely surprised it's by the same author as the other books that I loved. I gave it 3 stars because I still loved the characters, and the story had my attention, but the actual writing (style, vocabulary, editing, dialogue, continuity) was extremely disappointing and barely 1 or 2 stars. Was this book rushed? I hope The Goblin King doesn't meet the same fate, because I'm really a fan...
that HKW is a master storyteller word weaver! Excellent installment, love Jason and Chloe's story...love the twists and turns within the story...love the mystery - just a whole lotta love going on here!

Still the better book in the series. Everything was more well rounded. The story was more exciting than the first two. perhaps because the plot was getting more complicated. I enjoyed the book very much and still adored the couples.
4.25 stars
First Read:
This one has the hottest sex scene I had ever read in Ms. Heather book... HOLY YUMMY!
awesome book to read! I'm glad there will be 13 books total! My recommendation to those readers that are interested in this book, you HAVE to start with the Big Bad Wolf Series or you will have a hard time understanding this spin off series! Other than that enjoy!
Jason may be nicer now but he’s still arrogant and likes to show off. Don’t really care for Sioban as a Queen. I like her as a person, but she’s too childish and insecure to make a powerful queen. Though I do like Jason nickname for her.
You may want to keep a chart of the characters in this series. Things can really get mixed up with 13 kings (now 14) and their queens and friends involved in the story. And it’s odd that such ‘powerful’ men can’t seem to keep their safehouses safe.
Even the bad guys are getting mixed up. Some bad are now good and visa-versa and who’s’ working for whom. Then just as we think we know who the big baddie is, we get thrown another wrench in the works.
I like the Egyptian element coming into the storyline. Reminds me of the Osiris-Isis-Set triangle.
Footnote: 1) Disneyland’s Blue Bayou restaurant near the Pirates of Caribbean ride is one of favorite restaurants. They have the best Monte Cristo sandwich.
Fave scenes: the satellite dishes, Jason’s house key, the Pirates ride and falling stars.
Jason Alberich has found queen, but she wants nothing to do with him. Chloe Septeran is an unusual Akyri. She is one of the originals, but she refuses to tie herself to a warlock just to get his magic. Because of this she is much weaker than she should be, so when Jason gives her a taste of his magic she is overwhelmed. Fleeing Hawaii she heads off to Disneyland to find a mystical Akyri who is rumored to hang out there. Along the way she picks up some stalkers, some good guys and some bad. It is on a train journey to Washington State that everything goes sideways. Obviously the Akyri mystic dad's not the best at giving travel advice.
Meanwhile, a lot is happening with the rest of the thirteen kings and their unseen enemy is getting closer and closer to his goal. Can't wait to see what happens next.
The Warlock King is the forth in this series and i am still enjoying reading and wanting to know what is going to happen next. I notice there are 13 in the series but it is not putting me off so far.
The plot and characters are still keeping me intrigued as to where we are going to be taken in this world of vampires, warlocks, witches, fairies and all sorts of other fantasy characters. I like the fact that all the characters are the "standard" fantasy characters but with a different twist to them.
Jason Alberich is the Warlock King and Chloe Septeran is his queen, she is an Akyri and an original which makes her unusual and potentially very powerful.
Another fast paced great read and i already have the next one.
Jason Alberich knows the weight of the warlock crown like no other. Warlocks are a dark breed that uses even darker magic. Their symbiotic relationship with the akyri works well. Chloe Septeran is an Akyri like no other. A member of a race that must depend upon warlocks for sustenance in exchange for servitude, Chloe runs from the dark magic users. She is light and pure. She is also empty and hungry. That is until the warlock king finds her and knows she is his mate. Claiming her won't be easy, but then again what would be the fun in it? She will try to remain free, but Jason has his ways and he won't stand to lose his mate. Another entertaining paranormal romance by Heather Killough-Walden.
There were parts of this book that I really liked. I liked that we were finally given more history about the kings, Ramses and the villain. I also like the magical elements in this series because the characters have different kinds of magic. And, while I’m not clear about why Chloe was so hell bent on running from her destiny, I did like her as a character and I liked her as Jason’s queen as well.
What I don’t like about the series is how much the story jumps around. We jump between different locations and POVs constantly and there are no smooth transitions. It’s distracting and can be confusing. I also wish we were getting more world building in this series. It has been very slow in building over the first three books.
As far as the spice goes, this book is pretty tame until almost the end. But once you hit the spicy parts, it’s about to 2-3 chapters straight of sex. It’s a bit much in my opinion, but I realize that is a matter of preference.
There series is really good . The books are smaller novels takes me about 3 hours to read each one and I like the way she brings parts of the ongoing story into each novel bringing you right to the threads of the different Kings and their Queens of their realm. I recommend this series as a excellent read. I took a chance on the spin off series first not realizing at first that it was a spin off. Even if it's in the title 😊
Jason was not one of my preferred characters of the wolf series, and I feel she could have really had fun with this book. While I did warm to him, I didn't love him, and I think this had to do with the multitude of plot threads running through this book serving as a constant detraction and that there was simply not enough time devoted to Jason and Chloe. However, if this is the trend of this series, I hope to see more of them as it progresses and get to know them better.
3rd book of the series! I loved this one. Jason is this all powerful and feared Warlock, and yet a skittish little girl can show up and just find his weakness and make him a real person. It was great.
I still love the overall storyline, but I would have preferred more of the romance between the 2 main characters. It almost felt like it wasn't even their story because so much of the overall storyline took over.
Jason and Chloe get together. She knows he’s coming for her and doesn’t put up too much of a fight. More is happening with the overall story of the stollen goddess. There are still a ton of characters to try and keep straight, but less time talking about them.
Loving this series! 3 books in 24 hours so I’m going to take a little break. Plus I’m not as excited about book 4! Definitely loved this book though and it answered so many questions. FYI this is not at a standalone series. You have to read from book 1 not to be lost.
Each of these books is too short and just end on a cliffhanger. She should have written one long one about the 13 kings…. Save everyone the trouble. Still going to keep reading to find out how it ends.
