Holy Sweat

Rate this book
In Holy Sweat author Tim Hansel gives the ten keys to personal peak start, vision, goals, courage, teamwork, excellence, the ability to fail, perseverance, joy, and giving it all away. Hansel puts flesh and bones on these keys in an exciting way. Peak performance, as represented here, is not an achievement but a process. Any person who is struggling to stretch any area of his or her life in a positive direction is a peak performer. And the ultimate purpose then of peak performance is to give it all away, for Christ's sake.

This book came recommended by a Christian friend. I listened to the audible version of it which means it takes a little longer for me to get finished. The book is a little dated as I believe it was written several years ago however, its Message is not. It is a fabulous book and I enjoyed it greatly.

This book had a lot of quotes from other people that I found very interesting. I would like to have known a little more about how to live a life of holy flow. I know that God works in our hearts even when we can't see what He is doing. But, what can I do to encourage Him in this work?

I would recommend this to every Christian seeking to make a difference, or even lead a life well lived! Tim gives practical principals to lead a servant life, as well as support why you would want to live like that.

I chose not to finish this book. Life is short and there are many books! The author uses a lot of nice sounding words & phrases to convey a small number of mostly accurate but often incomplete concepts.

I find God when I workout and explore this great planet / nation he’s provided us with. That led me to this book - it was a great read.

Tim Hansel approached life with archetypal Californian vim. He was clearly a devoted Christian and achieved much good running a Christian version of Outward Bound. He struggled with severe pain for half his life following a climbing accident.

At the same time he seems to have been a member of the the PCUSA, given the ministers and authors he refers to, on the better, Barthian side of the denomination. That leads lack of theological clarity with which he writes where Christian doctrine and scripture need to undergird his ethics.

The result is that, despite protestations to the contrary, much of the book comes over as a baptized self-help manual in which you are seeking to do the best you can and achieving with Jesus. This is not helped by a somewhat random anecdotal style with frequent use of Hallmark card-like slogans such as, 'The problem isn't having butterflies in your stomach, but getting them to fly in formation.'

The reality for most of us is that our lives are often humdrum and on a small scale. DeYoung's The Hole in our Holiness is a much better guide to living with 'peak performance' as we limp behind Christ carrying our cross.

Starts strong, but then does not open up any significant new insights. An ok summary of many other great ideas, but uses a few too many stories and quotes from others to keep the flow smooth. Short chapters, yet sometimes still not much content. Best for a young Christian/Youth Worker that has not already learned these ideas. Otherwise good for a quick skimming to remind you and reinvigorate you to ideas you have forgotten over time.

This book was instrumental for my development in high school. I mostly remember the quotes that prefaced each chapter...some of them more poignant than the copy.

One of my favorite chapters intros the subject of how often the New Testament used the phrase "Let" in relation to us letting God do in us all that He desires.

This was suprisingly not a bad read. It was sort of a Christian self help book of sorts. Some of the main points of this book were choosing joy, reaching our peak level of performance, being a servant leader, etc.

I read this book while preparing for a mission trip in Central America. It was my early 20s and the first book that really challenged me to put hands and feet to my faith in Jesus. It was the "Radical" of its day.

This book challenged my faith. Tim will definitely push you. It’s a book you read slowly and thoughtfully. My copy is full of underlines, circles, and highlights, and it’s a book I will thumb through at least once a year to remember the great concepts of discipleship.
