Two Lips, Indifferent Red

Rate this book
Kipp Llewellyn would rather follow his dreams than toe the family line, so instead of the support of his wealthy family, he has estrangement and a part-time job with Hunter, an in-demand interior designer. Hunter opens a new world for Kipp to explore—and not just for his career. It’s through Hunter that Kipp meets and begins what he thinks is a one-sided flirtation with Ham, one of Hunter’s customers.

To Kipp’s astonishment, Ham asks him for a date. Unfortunately for Kipp, a mysterious phone call summons him home, where his father gives him an ultimatum: save the family company by marrying billionaire Hyde Wyndham, in which case all will be overlooked, or never set foot in his home again. But meeting Hyde leaves Kipp stunned and betrayed, because Hyde is actually Ham.

A guarantee of marriage is no excuse for making Kipp feel foolish, and Kipp had enough of the gilded cage in the first twenty-one years of his life. He turns Hyde down, stating that marriage should be about love rather than convenience. If Hyde wants him, he’ll have to court him the old-fashioned way.

Kipp comes from Martinsburg, a town where the few leading Families run things.
His deceased mother was a Martin and his father is one of the powerhouses in their town.
So going to college he is pretty much on his own, financially and otherwise, which is probably a good thing for Kipp. He has a job he likes and is just finishing up his junior year when said Dad with whom he has had virtually no contact unenrolls him from school and tells him he is marrying Hyde.
Well, here is where the fun starts, Hyde is actually the guy Kipp has been lusting after for the last year and a half and was about to have his first date with before being called home to dear old dad.
Now, there is a 20 year age difference between Hyde and Kipp, and huge financial disparities and Kipp is sweet, naive and innocent to Hyde's self made business tycoon and cutthroat ways.
I kept expecting Sue Ellen and JR from Dallas to make an appearance, since this reminded me of that kind of thing, there are tons of characters that have interwoven lives and back room dealings, skeletons in closets and underhanded contracts, hidden agendas, and a history between all the people in this book from ex lovers to blackmail, to love children and pure hatred.
All that said, it wasn't really dark or complicated, more fun soap operish, when then the talk of surrogates and children came up, I knew it, I was reading Cinderfella goes m/m and adds a dollop of Days of Our Lives and a pinch of Harlequin.
I liked this story, Kipp, whose POV it's told from is a nice sweet very young man, with his heart in the right place. Did I like that Hyde was a little overbearing and in my opinion spoiling Kipp but not always honest with him? No, I didn't, did I like that everyone's partner/wife seemed to be decades younger? Nope. I also didn't like the Grandfather much, I thought he didn't do right by Kipp in a lot of ways, same for his brother. But, did I like that the whole town was somehow involved in everything and all of it was tied together with revenge being had after years and year, you betcha I did.
This won't be for everyone, but if you like the mega rich older man and young sweet naive man pairing, with evil families and big wedding and no on page sex, this could work. It worked for me, I do have one complaint I would have loved to have seen the 18 month friendship between Ham and Kipp, we are told that it happened but it wasn't shown at all, and for me that made it seem like instant love, even though it really wasn't.
So, this one left me happy and feeling like I watched a whole season of a really fun show with a great HEA for the couple and the baddies all got their comeuppance.

I hated everything about this book. Everything. A tried and true plot trope was horribly butchered, the characters were ridiculous, the dialogue read as juvenile and the relationship bored me to tears. At one point I planned to count all of the exclamation marks, but even that was too much effort (since there were. so. fucking. many!!!1!11!!eleventy!!1)! It might as well have been written in capslock.

I gave it an extra half star for otherwise decent grammar & spelling, but the whole book just felt like the worst grunge work ever thrown at Mike Rowe and hurt my brain just to get through. But, since I needed it for the Scavenger Hunt, I slogged on. (i.e.: No More Points-Whoring for me.) Really disappointing because the author is new to me & I thought I might like the Spy vs. Spook series, but if the writing is like this then...yeah, no. That's SO not gonna happen.

I do love Tinneans books, there's just something slightly off the wall about them that makes me smile. This is no exception, there's this retro romance feeling about it which like other reviewers I would liken to the era of Mills & Boon romance books of the ' 70's and '80's or Harlequin for the readers who would recognise that publisher more!

There's also a slightly old fashioned air about it with the names and mannerisms that also brings to mind the feel of the early 1900's. kipps and Hyde Wyndhams names for instance and the way Kipp calls his father ' Sir' made me think of English public schools and headmasters even though this isn't a school story!! And the very beginning when Kipp is told he is to marry Hyde was almost reminiscent of some of the regency romances where the down on his luck earl or Duke has to marry his daughter to the neaveau riche business man against her will to fill the coffers of the family once more! Sounds strange but its the only way I can explain the feel of the story.

The book itself has lots of drama and skulduggery involving Rich priveleged families, Kipps scheming father, hidden family secrets and of course the courtship between Kipp and Hyde... And it is a courtship. There are no in your face love scenes but she still manages to portray the sexual tension and romance very nicely so it really doesn't matter or spoil the overall read.

Enjoyable and going with my other Tinnean keepers for another read somewhere down the line.

Another wonderful read by Tinnean.

I loved this book, yes it’s a Harlequin/Mills & Boon style read, yes it’s a bit soap operaish and yes its predictable, but its also sweet and romantic and moving. Poor Kipp totally stole my heart, if any one deserves their HEA it’s him.

Recommended for anyone looking for that escape into fantasy romance with plenty of story but no needless sex padding.

This review can be found at The Armchair Reader.

This is a hard review to write, mostly because I don’t really know what to say. The blurb does a pretty good job of explaining the basics of the story so I don’t think it needs repeating. The only thing that probably needs mentioning is that Kipp’s father absolutely hates him, which plays a big role in the story. More than anything, though, this is a book that deals with reunions, scandals, affairs and deceit but not in a severely malicious way. If you like soap operas then you will enjoy this as much as I did.

Kipp is a sweet kid. At twenty-one, he’s made the best life he can have without the support of his family while going after his dreams. He’s feisty and quirky but also innocent and sexy. He grew up privileged but now he’s almost frugal which makes him a great match for Hyde, who’s at least twenty years older than Kipp. Hyde grew up poor but made himself into a rich and well-known business man. He meets Kipp eighteen months before Kipp knows of the arranged marriage so he’s gotten to realize Kipp isn’t into him because of his money. Their relationship is odd because you don’t really see their developing connection but you can just tell how much they both adore each other.

The plot takes you on a wild ride ranging from allergies to illnesses, deceptions to affairs, and illegitimate children to cowardly ex-lovers. The one thing that is obvious through the whole story is that Kipp and Hyde trust each other explicitly and while they might get in some sticky situations, it’s easy to see that they won’t be swayed by deceitful people. One of the things I really enjoyed, though, is Kipp’s relationship with his grandfather. I adored that man and his regret over Kipp and Kipp’s mom. I also like that this story is so family oriented. Kipp reconnects with his estranged family in the time he and Hyde are planning their wedding and he also gets to meet family members he never met before. There’s also the added benefit that Hyde, who was not wanted in that town when he was younger, can rub it in all the arrogant people’s faces that he’s richer than them and has managed to snag such a beautiful and sweet man.

My only issue with the story is that sometimes I felt like Hyde treated Kipp like a child and Kipp’s acceptance of Hyde’s secrets grew frustrating for me. As a fiancé, Hyde should have been communicating with Kipp about certain things instead of just saying something along the lines of everything will be fine or don’t concern yourself with it. There are no doubt unanswered questions about the story but I didn’t mind so much the mysteriousness because of everything that happened over the course of the book. Although, I will say that I hated Hyde’s ex, Aaron Richardson, talk about someone I wanted to strangle! The only other thing readers might have an issue with (although I didn’t) is that Kipp sometimes could have been a woman instead of a man, for example, at times, his mannerisms were feminine and his speech was like how a cultured wife would speak. This story also took place over, more or less, a week so some might think everything happens too fast but, in my opinion, it was fast-paced without being rushed. Everything happened in its own time and were dealt with when needed to be.

All in all, there was something special about this story. I’ve always been a fan of Tinnean’s books but this one pushed all my happy buttons. Yes, it does have a feel of modern day Harlequin with a dash of soap opera to it but I found the story highly entertaining. I didn’t mind how much drama there was, unnecessary or otherwise, because it flowed so well with the rest of the story. It was an easy, enjoyable read because it featured a lot of different conflicts and situations that never made the story lose its appeal but more than anything, this one was sweet with a ton of funny and amusing moments. It’s adorable and I loved the fact that it left me with a smile, especially since I found the ending so incredibly sweet.

A very annoying read. I did not feel that there was any point to the entire story, since the entire book was more or less just the two of them going through wedding preparation.

I found it impossible to like the two main characters. Kipp had a promising start, he was his own man and was responsible for himself, but the moment he hooked up with Hyde, he turn into a grass that just got blown around by everything around him. Choosing wine was pretty much the only thing he was good for after this point. The amount of exclamation marks used both in his speech and thought was unbreakable (similar to her other work The Best). From the moment their relationship started he was already being jealous and insecure ().

Hyde is no better, threatening to kill someone else's fiancée simply because Kipp might be upset. How he was super in control and didn't need any input from anyone even Kipp was just aggravating. Although no one took Kipp seriously, I would expect better from someone who wanted to marry him, and Hyde was probably one of the worst offender. From the marriage that was arranged behind his back to the event near the end of the book and Hyde didn't bat an eye and just continued talking as if Kipp did not say anything at all.

The whole everyone in the town against Kipp thing seemed very forced . Pretty much every supporting characters was one-dimensional and thus very fake. While I understand that the father is portrayed as a villain, the constant jab at him (e.g. ) simply made the main characters appeared like shallow jerks.

There was an unholy amount of clichés in the book. The super quick turn around from "don't trust him" to "can't wait to marry him". The stupidity of the villain's action that the author admitted through the main character that it "made no sense at all". Lastly, this is something I have seen in nearly all romance books, but does anyone in real life ever say "you hurt him/her and I'll come after you with X" to their friend's significant other, especially if it's their first encounter with them?

While the writing was smooth, apart from some minor error such as misspelling a character's name, I found the book to be very disappointing.

Tinnean delivers the classic tale of “silver spoon child who desires to follow his own heart instead of toeing the family line”, to a distinct and enticing new level.

I have to say I love the Shakespearean reference in the title of this book, and I will also say up front that I am definitely a fan of the author’s writing.

Set in 2017, the book reads as part contemporary, part fairy tale, part Victorian. This may sound odd, but it’s how it struck me and it made for a really entertaining read. The story revolves around several prominent families in the city of Martinsburg…or The Families as they are known. I gather the year 2017 was used primarily because marriage between two people of the same gender is put forth as now legal in the entire USA. Although unfortunately, bigotry is alive and well – pertaining to both sexual orientation and race. The author displays a marvelous capability of painting the atmosphere and mood for her story. Every character and location became vivid in my mind.

This is Kipp’s story and is told from his pov for which I am really, really glad. I just love the character and his voice. Kipp is a to-the- manor-born “blue blood” from Martinsburg, in fact the city is named after his mother’s family. Kipp calls his father “Sir”, as per Sir’s directive. Oh isn’t that sweet? Not! Kipp’s mother died shortly after he was born, and he was summarily ignored by his father and was sent off to boarding school as a child. Sir made Kipp return to attend the local high school, for reasons never made clear to Kipp. In high school, Kipp realized he was gay but never told anyone about it, he certainly figured his father would be less than accepting of such a fact. His one date with another man – Daniel, the school golden boy – turned into an embarrassing debacle. Kipp thought without a doubt he would be outed – at school, to his father and the whole city after the date, but there were absolutely zero repercussions. Hmmm……?

The story actually begins with Kipp in his junior year of college in a city away from Martinsburg. His dream is to be a decorator, not to carry on with the family business ventures. Due to this fact he has been estranged from his family (including his older brother, Geoff and his Grandfather) and cut off financially from his trust fund or any financial assistance whatsoever. Kipp comes across as basically confident in pursuing what he wants out of life, yet he has been berated and cast aside by family so he has serious doubts about self-worth. He is not openly gay at college, doesn’t date at all and is a virgin. Kipp has a great sense of humor but is not a smart ass.

Kipp has a job at Georg’s, an upscale furnishing store owned by Hunter, who has become a friend to Kipp as well as an employer. While at work, Kipp encounters a client who introduces himself as Ham. Ham is an older, handsome, sexy, wealthy and somewhat mysterious man. Ham subsequently visits the store again and eventually he and Kipp flirt and end up kissing in the storage room. Oh, good stuff! Kipp keeps one of Ham’s handkerchiefs (sigh!)….and the corker is Ham finally asking Kipp for a date. An “I’ll whisk you off to New York City for dinner in my private jet” type of date. (Swoon!) This is where the story really takes off, as Kipp is called back home by Sir, in no uncertain terms. He must call Ham and postpone the big date.

Upon returning home, Kipp is informed that the family business is in big trouble and must merge with another company. To Kipp’s horror, Sir has arranged for Kipp to marry the head of the other company, a Mr. Hyde Wyndham. When Hyde turns out to be Ham, Kipp doesn’t know what to think, and neither did I!

Hyde presents as being somewhat mysterious, considerably sexy, and extremely in control yet is not controlling or arrogant. I would describe him as being chivalrous while still treating Kipp as absolutely an equal and not some shrinking violet, or inferior. Hyde was a member of one of The Families until some bad dealings went down and he left town at a young age and worked his way back up to being extremely wealthy. He treats everyone fairly and courteously but has no problem delegating to his personal assistant or inviting rock stars to the wedding.

Kipp ends up having very mixed feelings. He had already fallen for Ham, and now Ham is Hyde who apparently wants to marry him, and Hyde claims it is not just a business venture, he really cares for Kipp. Oh, the drama! So Kipp decides to go through with the marriage, provided that Hyde courts him properly. Hyde, despite some of the mysterious air surrounding him, is pretty much an open book regarding his feelings for Kipp. I want to convey that in no way is Kipp written as vapid, or chick with a dick. He simply believes he wants to marry for love and be worthy of that love.

I am purposely not going into detail about the plot after this point, as the story was a journey of discoveries for Kipp and I feel the reader should witness all the events and revelations as Kipp does. How and when did Sir know Kipp was gay? Did Hyde know who Kipp was back at Georg’s? Is Kipp really who he thinks HE is? Is Hyde really in love with Kipp? Is ANYTHING as it seems or as Kipp always thought it was? Hah, you’ll need to read to find out!

The story is not angsty, however there is lots of meddling and fairly loathsome treatment of people going on by some individuals ( who just may “get theirs” in the end). There is very little on page sex (save for some dreams and fantasies of Kipp’s), yet many very sultry kissing scenes. There is also a fade to black scene that we relive through Kipp’s memory. Personally, I liked the romantic flavor of the story, so the lack of on-page sex was in no way a negative. Kipp and Hyde make a great couple and a formidable team.

The lovely cover is very fitting to the book – Kipp’s “Looking for love (will settle for green jelly beans)” t-shirt has a role in the story

I highly recommend this book and this author’s work in general.

The title is from Shakespeare's play, Twelfth Night.

Kipp was a 21-yr old student born of wealth but had to support himself when his father and grandfather cut his allowance and tuition money. In his job, he met Ham, a 40-something rich man and they agreed to date.

The day before the date, Kipp was called home by his father and was told that he had arranged Kipp to marry a businessman who wanted shares of his father's company. When Kipp met the person, he turned out to be Ham. Hurt, Kipp rejected the arrangement. When later they met again, Kipp finally agreed to marry Ham but he needed to court Kipp first.

This is a fun, sometimes over-the-top story. I really like the two MCs, and except for one moment they stick to each other--even when there are many moments where the author could have made them angst-fest, but thankfully she didn't.

I also loved reading the reunion with many family members, and that there are closure to many old-age wounds. Even some details, while they don't move the story forward, like eyebrow thing, are fine for me as they are not too many and just add the flavor.

There are parts I could live without, though.

Still, overall is a nice reading.

This is the story of the trials and tribulations associated with the wedding of Kipp and Hyde (aka Ham). These are two guys who are from the monied south, and they are supposedly from the "right families", or so we are lead to believe. I won't give away any of the story, but I can tell you this -- if you have ever thought of a possible contrived plot twist for any story, you will finding in this book.

During the course of this story, there are scores of characters, and side-plots, and name changes that make this story very hard to follow. I think if the story eliminated ten of the hurdles that were thrown in front of these star-crossed lovers, it would have been much more enjoyable.

Also, for some reason, Tinnean decided not to include any really hot love scenes in this story. I understand that one of the characters wanted to wait to have sex until after the wedding, but once they were married, the honeymoon sex scene just fizzled and dried up on the vine.

Generally, I like Tinnean's stories -- and, don't get me wrong, I liked this one too -- but, I didn't think it was up to the level of her prior stories. I give it three out of five stars.

Enjoyable love story. Kipp, disillusioned and estranged from his family ends up called home and expected to tow the line by marrying his father's business associate, Hyde Wyndham. It turns out Hyde is actually Ham, a customer of Kipp's that he has been crushing on for quite a while. He's disappointment to find out that the reason Hyde (Ham) asked him out might have been nothing but a business move.

One thing that truly annoyed me with this story was the fact that Kipp kept referring back to something his father had told him, that he was too forward and it was unattractive. But in a conversation Kipp had with his grandfather, it was stated that they should never believe anything his father has to say... so why does he believe that he is too forward and unattractive???

I like the story, could have used a little tightening up to avoid too much repetition, but since it was written as a serial some overlap often happens.

Loved Hyde and Kipp together when Kipp wasn't doubting himself. Good read!! Recommended.

What can I say… It must be LOVE!!! ;D I have loved every book, so far, that I have read written by this author… and I don’t see that changing with any of them that I read in the future!!! She writes quirky, off the wall “he loves me, he loves me not” stories that alway entertains me and gives my emotions a workout! Good Job!!! :D

Side note: Don't you find it strange that discrimination can be so inconsistent?
It's OK to be gay, just don't date outside of your race! Or... race doesn't matter, just stick to the opposite sex! Or, my favorite... You're gay and have a boyfriend? That's OK, we still love you... but, *whispers* he's just not our kind of people! *headdesk*

I really enjoyed this book. Tinnean is a personal favourite of mine and when I saw this book I knew I would have to read it soon. Hyde and Kipp were the couple in this book. They were nice MC's and the couple was cute together. For some reason I found this book sad, I am not sure why, but I did.

There is a jealous ex and a homophobic father, family secrets and a dying man in this. I loved Kipp's granddad, he was a character who made mistakes, but his heart was in the right place. I really loved Kipp he was a really sweet MC.

Highly recommend this. It might not be everyone's cup of tea, but i still loved it.

I did enjoy this. It was like watching a Soap...that you just started. You are invested in the one couple, you don't know their history yet, and the other characters keep creeping into your interest.

So many other characters, I could barely keep them strait. Some I had interest in, some I could care less. But you rarely got a clear picture on those interesting characters.

I never quite got Hyde. If it wasn't for the fact, that I was pretty sure this was a fluffy through and through book, I could have been convinced that Hyde had plans to marry Kipp, and then humiliate him like Daniel did, only bigger. This story could have veered off into a totally different direction. (of course with a hea in the end)

It's not that Hyde ever threw off a cruel vibe. As supporting and kind as he was with Kipp...he still ran cold for me. I was rooting for him, but I just wanted the man to liven up a bit.

And all that talk about losing control, and we got BUMKIS! Were was the hot love scene Kipp was dreaming of? UHHHH, I was looking forward to seeing Hyde loosing the tie, and show some spark.

AHHH! Why am I so negative? Yeah, Yeah, I'm griping, but I did enjoy it. I liked the Grandfathers, I liked Kipp. I wanted like his brother.
I wanted more of Hydes mother, Kipps brother, the crazy ex, the grandpas....
It kept my interest. Left me wishing for more from some characters.

(actually, I think I might have liked it more if Hyde did go dark side, just to realize he was in love with Kipp)

This is a life-time movie kind of book, carrying you along exactly where you think it will go, with everything moving along smoothly like it never does in real life. It was simply written and an easy read, but it won't grip your heart or emotions. The author should have just put the timeline in present day because the attempt at adding in "futuristic" garnishes were just sad. The chemistry between the characters was great; however, the build-up and teasing throughout made the lack of a sex scene a crushing disappointment. The plot "twists" at the end weren't much of a surprise and felt like a cop-out, but the beginning is really nice and Kipp's grandfather is a wonderful secondary character that I wish to have read more about. The same could be said for the brother's girlfriend. Her character felt deeper than the words on the paper. Kipp's fears are real and handled well from his point of view, but they are never addressed in a concrete way. All in all, it was okay, but it's not a gripping page-turner...

While I truly loved the characters in this story it just didn't wow me like I thought it would. I'm a BIG fan of hot male on male sex in a romance book and this book doesn't have any of that. It isn't until the epilogue that you even get a hint of them having descriptive sex and its extremely bland. It seemed like a lot of the story was leading up to their wedding night of wild and passionate sex and it just wasn't something the author gave us, I was extremely disappointed. I hate a story that gives you build up only to not follow through. That said the rest of the book was really good and there were a lot of secondary characters that I enjoyed as well.

4 stars. Blurb does a good job of letting you know what your in for (but so much better to read about!). My only disappointment is that there's not any sex scenes. There's a few teasers, but when it finally happens, it's fade to black. Considering how much emphasis was on Kipp's inexperience and his lust for Hyde (along with his insecurities and past), I wanted to read more.

Plot from blurb, although absolutely Cinderella-like, was intriguing and accondiscending. I just wanted a plain and reassuring book with lots of love and romantic touch and run from the MCs. I found a sort of mexican telenovela's style just in MM version. I god bored after the first half of the book. Sorry, but all the intrigues and ambushes annoyed me so much I was tempted to drop the book at a certain point. I did not because I hoped sometimes during the reading, these couple would just take the bait and run from all author plotting and spend some time in a cabin in the woods making up like bunnies. It didn't happen, unfortunately. I sincerely feel for the two MCs, they were nice enough and deserved some privacy and hot sex. :D

Kipp walked away from his family when he decided to go against their wishes for his future, perfectly happy with his life working part time for Hunter and starting a tentative relationship with Ham, he thinks things are going great, until he receives a phone call from his father’s assistant demanding his presence. Kipp discovers that his father has made plans for him to marry to save the family company, but Kipp’s biggest shock is the man he is supposed to marry is none other than Ham (Hyde Wyndham). Feeling betrayed Kipp makes it clear that he has to be courted because he is more than just the company shares that Ham wants, but as they begin to get close Kipp discovers dark secrets from his families past that just might destroy his happiness.

This is a wonderful story if you want a bit of a Harlequin/Mills&Boone feeling story with the added pinch of double dealings and long hidden secrets. Kipp is an easy going character who wants to please his father more than anything, but there are some things that he just won’t do, discovering that the man he has been falling in love with has made an agreement with his father hurts him, but Kipp has the opportunity to try to gain his father’s regard and the man he wants, but at what cost? Ham is a character that is hard to get a read on, he is quite controlling and basically takes over Kipp’s life in one smooth move, he does seem to really want Kipp but it is hard to tell at times because he seems to pull back a lot. Although we want Kipp to get his man sometimes you also want him to put his foot down and tell Ham to back off a bit and slow down.

I must admit to really enjoying this story, although I wanted Kipp to put his foot down and stop letting people making all the decisions for him, it was actually a well written prince Charming type story. The storyline was pretty good, weaving family drama, business dealings and old secrets together and giving us a slight mystery that changes Kipps life forever. The characters all play their parts well, but some of them leave a bad taste and many seem to be just misunderstood rather than outright nasty. The relationship between Kipp and Ham is one that slightly confuses because although we plainly see how Kipp feels for Ham, we don’t really get a feeling until right near the end of how Ham feels for Kipp, it is also slightly disturbing how Ham makes all the plans and rides roughshod over Kipp until Kipp just agrees to whatever Ham wants… very Victorian feeling with Kipp being the Victorian Miss.

I will recommend this to those who want arranged marriages for business, Cinderfella type stories, hidden family secrets, dirty business deals, pleasing your man, falling in love and a very happy ever after.

synopsis:
kipp is putting himself through college, in spite of the fact that his family is rich because his father hates him and his grandfather didn't approve of his major. kipp has a huge crush on a man that he only really started talking to in the past week or so, in spite of the fact that he's seen this man off and on for over a year. then kipp gets a call from his father's assistant that his father wants him home now, so kipp drops everything (although he does finish his two final exams) and heads home, thinking his father might need him. when he gets there, he finds out that his father wants to use him to complete a business deal: all he has to do is marry hyde wyndham. kipp says no, and then the man he's been crushing on walks through the door and really says no. kipp ends up staying around, though, because his grandfather is sick and he is the only person who ever really gave a crap about him. hyde follows him and finds him, and they end up going through with their engagement.

what i liked: the premise. i liked the fact that kipp made it on his own, and that hyde really liked kipp for kipp.

what i didn't like: there was SO much going on here. secret lovers, revenge, evil father, companies going under, etc, etc. it kind of felt like everything got thrown into the story and just stuck there.

Since I’ve read, and loved, Tinnean’s Spy vs. Spook series, I had high hopes for this one. Unfortunately these hopes weren’t fulfilled. This book, about virginal 21-year-old Kipp who’s extremely unpleasant father arranges a marriage to twice-his-age business tycoon Hyde, was like a silly and very stereotypical M/F romance. Kipp was shy and lonely, but of course super-pretty though he didn’t realize it. Hyde was handsome, strong and take-charge, and Kipp had secretly fallen in love with him even before they became engaged.

There were some strange family interactions, of lack of interactions, that didn’t make sense, and Kipp and Hyde’s whole hometown appeared very dysfunctional. The book was far too long, it could have been half the length and still made more sense, and while most of it was a buildup to the wedding we didn’t get to see anything of the wedding night! I thought that was why Kipp’s virginity and Hyde’s (supposed) experience would lead up to, so I was disappointed when we didn’t get at least a hint of what it was like.

This book is a modern twist on your mama’s Harlequin Romance. It uses the trope where the younger and vulnerable character (Kipp) is forced to marry the older, more experienced millionaire (Hyde). Yelp and true to form, they find love. This book is a guilty pleasure. Like the old worn pair of shoes or ratty sweatshirt we all cling to, this seems comforting and familiar.

Kipp is in desperate need of someone to love him and believe him. Enter Hyde. He is very protective of Kipp and loves him. Adding to the soap opera feel of this book is the good people of Martinsburg. The moneyed elite including Kipp’s own family have questionable values. They can’t see past the dollar signs and live their lives according to what is proper and befitting of their station in life.

Curl up in that old ratty sweatshirt and spend the afternoon with this book. The “old tried and true” things in our lives are comforting and, we could all use more of that.

It's hard for me write this review because many part of the plot not worked for me. Seem to me a bit strange for Kipp decide to marry Hyde after only one week because really them knew each other really little and also for all secrets and intrigues unknown to Kipp. Kipp is a bit naive and Hyde too dominant and confident. Then there are evil families,
deceptions, scandals ,ex-lovers, and a lot of lies and unspoken truths that make too soap opera.I don't mind if there aren't many sex scenes but seem to me that are missing the important ones. I have read this book waiting for something thrilling ,that breaks a plot sometime banal and too saccharine. However I have worn my glasses with pink lenses and I have read the book because the story is as fable where the love and truth won always.
