Charmaine Parker is whisked back in time to search for the missing ingredients to a magical love potion and lands in the middle of the great witch hunt in Salem, Massachusetts, in 1686.
This is book #5 in the Swept Away series where in 1989 Ashley has a computer, Merlin, who she can program to send people into the past. Each book features a different friend going to a different place and time.
In this book, quirky Charmaine, who is into horoscopes and tarot cards, finds an old journal hidden in an antique desk. The journal was written by Faith, a Puritan girl, in 1686. When Faith's journal ends abruptly, Charmaine is sure that she's in danger so she has Ashley send her back in time. This is the first time that two people were able to travel together in time. A love potion meant for the boy Charmaine likes goes wrong.
I really liked this book. The story keeps the reader on edge and the ending gave me shivers.
Charmaine goes back in time to 1686 and helps a girl accused of witchcraft in Connecticut.
I remember liking this a lot when I read it as a teenager. Charmaine's friend Ashley has created a computer program that lets you go back in time - hand wave, hand wave. It's still an interesting story as an adult re-read, though I skimmed most of it. I was surprised by the ending which ended up happy, but not in the way I assumed it would.
