Fight or Flight

Rate this book
Be smart.
Keep your head down.
And look out for number one.

These are the rules Jay has lived by for the past two years. The rules of surviving life on the streets. But when Em comes bursting into his life, in all of her disastrous glory, the rules go right out the window.

Survive.
Flee what’s been left behind.
And never look back.

Emerson’s plan was simple. Though, it was easier said than done. The city streets are dangerous and unforgiving to a new arrival. Especially, a seventeen-year-old girl who’s never known anything but life in the suburbs. Sometimes, however, what’s lurking behind those white picket fences can be more frightening than any dark alley.

Both of them made the same decision when life got overwhelming—to run from their demons. Brought together by fate or circumstance, Em and Jay find the kind of love neither of them ever expected. But, when those demons come back to haunt them and their love is on the line, which instincts will they choose to follow this time . . . Fight or Flight?

A warm bed, food at hand, showers, toilets, clothes, etc... All things that most of us take as a given daily. For some, those fundamental elements of survival aren't givens & they come at too great a price. For some, they'd rather starve, freeze, live in filth, and brave the danger of the streets than be beaten and sexually assaulted by those supposed to care and provide for them.

This is the story of two homeless teens, one streetwise and one that just isn't adept at survival.

It's hard to read at times, and it's certainly hard for those of us who've never had to feel hunger pains & the true threat of freezing to death to fathom how one survives under such weights.

The author does an excellent job at painting this environment and the people within. She also does an excellent job at reflecting a true picture of how the world responds to this section of the population - some with empathy or a helping hand and some with harsh judgments and cruelty.

My only environmental complaint here was that there's never any homeless sheltering options and this story is set in a city large enough to have one. Why?

Jay stole my heart in the way he cared for Em and did the absolute best he could to provide all that he could possibly give. There's a beautiful love story here that's not surrounded by glitter, gold, and rich people's play rooms.

Em was such a broken character. She had moments of strength, but they all seemed to revolve around Jay. While this is understandable given her past, I would've loved to have seen her find more awareness of who she is as a person verses remaining a victim and/or a dependent. She never found her self-worth, which was very sad for me.

The End

The end is the only reason I didn't give this book 4 stars.

The story and characters up to 98% were worthy of 4 stars. The first 98% felt 100% authentic, poignant, and true to life aside form the lack of homeless shelter options. The characters were developed and pulled at my heartstrings in their plight and responses.

The last two percent, that is how they were able to reunite and have a HFN, felt like unicorns and rainbows.

Don't get me wrong, I desperately wanted these two to find a safe-haven!

But, it felt like the author hit a dead end alley and just decided to paint a door vs show me the removal of the bricks as they bust through to the other side.

I've read 98% of how life is not easy and then the author just throws out a lucky lotto ticket of sorts to save the day in the last 2%. Here are the problems:

A) we get very little about how this changes their lives now other than having a new home.

B) we don't get anything on how they plan to to maintain in the future what they've been given - school, job, income?!?

C) the legal aspects don't f'ing work that way. She would have to be the one to bring forth such legal issues, not Jay via a lawyer. This unrealistic solution tainted what had been such a poignant, realistic story.

D) the harshness of this story needed a balm of HEA, not a HFN, to soothe readers' minds and hearts.

^^^ It pains me greatly to give this 3 stars because of such an unsatisfying final 2%.

~"The fight-or-flight response is also known as the acute stress response. Essentially, the response prepares the body to either fight or flee the threat."~

Seventeen-year-old Emerson, has wasted years hoping on fairytales. The kind where the princess is being held captive by some foul beast, but then a white knight comes along to free her. She'd waited and waited for her white knight to come, but eventually it had dawned on her that her life was no fairy tale. There were no such things as white knights, she was no princess, and her home was not a castle.

But neither was this place.

Jay has rules for surviving life on the streets.
Be smart.
Keep your head down.
And look out for number one.

He didn't account for Em.

He is drawn to her and he finds himself helping her out.
He believes that she will soon see this is no way of living, and will see that this was all a mistake and go crawling back home.
However no-one choses this life without having known something worse first.
What’s lurking behind those white picket fences where Em comes from can be more frightening than any dark alley.

Thrown together by fate or circumstance, Em and Jay find the kind of love neither of them ever expected. But, when those demons come back to haunt them and their love is on the line, which instincts will they choose to follow this time . . . Fight or Flight?

O.M.G!

What a journey. This pulled me in from page one. What an eye opening experience. This was real, raw and heartbreaking. To see what one would do to survive really does put life into perspective.
My eyes were glued to the pages. Be sure you have a few free hours because from the moment you start this book you're going to be on the ultimate trip to a place you never thought you'd go.

I wanted a tiny little more, needed more. But that was just me, it doesn't take anything away from the story.
The only thing that it definitely needed for me, was an Epilogue.
Maybe there will be a follow up story, to tie up everything with a nice little bow! ( Ohh that would be good!!!) hahaha

Loved the story, Loved the writing.
Check this one out!

3.5 to 4 stars!

This story was kind of heart-breaking. Emerson is 17 and finally gets the courage to leave her troubled past behind. She hops on the train and heads for the city. There she meets Jay. Jay has been homeless for two years and has his own troubled past.

Jay reluctantly takes Em under his wings and together they barely survive the city streets. Over time Jay and Em develop a love for each other--out of their need to survive and cope and live.

When Em's past catches up with her in the city she's forced to choose between her troubled past and saving Jay. Will Jay and Em find their way back to each other? Will they ever have some place to call home?

This was a quick, enjoyable read. I really felt for Jay and Emerson and the struggles they had to go through. I was really rooting for them to find a HEA.

Just finished 'Fight or Flight' by Jamie Canosa. This is my ever first book by Jamie. I never doubt myself that is book is a truly brilliant job,

I have mix emotions feeling right now, worried for Em and Jay. Felt loved the way their relationship grew each day, felt cherished and protected. It also scares the hell out of me too. Every scenes are very intense and a lot emotional too. Couldn't help myself but cry in between.

Their relationship is very unlikely you'll ever have in your life. This is my ever first book by Jamie. And this is my EVER first book reading something like this. It really caught me guard. Never thought reading something like this makes me wonder the people who actually living in squat. How their hardship and every day struggles just to live one more each day.

At the end I'm so DAMN happy and proud for both Jay and Emerson. For Sam who always feeds them a very yummy breakfast. His a good samaritan you know. Knowing they check every dumpsters to check on food just to overcome the hunger they felt. Sleeping in the cold floor beneath them with piles of news paper to keep them warm at night. Knowing that they have to become a thief in order for them to get warmer clothes, really broke me down. And that crazy manwhore pervert dickwand asshole uncle of hers you'll be rotten in hell dude!

Great job Jamie. I'm truly an awe in creating 'Fight or Flight. Reading this broke me down big time. This is one of my favorite books this year!

I definitely, positively, abso-freaking-lutely loved this book. I haven't read a contemporary this unique.

My 3 favourite things about this books are: The setting, The romance and Jay.

But I'm going to save the best for last and talk about other things.

Em is one of the sweetest characters ever! The wanted to prove herself; not just to the people around her but to herself too. That doesn't mean she turned from broken to street thug in two days. Em went through some serious character development. She went from Emerson to Ember. And it was wonderful.

“Well, excuse me! I’m sorry I didn’t just sit back and watch those jerks tear you apart over a stupid blanket. Remind me and next time I’ll bring popcorn!”

Al was an interesting character with a good backstory. I wish we saw more of her.

I wish we got to know more about Em's past and parents and stuff.

Now for my favourites!

The setting. I liked how we got to see Em and Jay trying to survive on the streets and how they manage to pull through.

The Romance. If you didn't notice, while I'm not really girly I'm still a sucker for romances and if the romance is bad I just dump the book. Anyway. I just loved the romance. It's like Em and Jay are ment for each other. She's sweet while he's tough; and he's protective while she's insecure.

"Jay was about ninety-nine percent positive this guy could kill him in his sleep on a normal day, but not now. Now he had something worth fighting for. Someone worth defending. Someone he’d kill for. Someone he’d die for."

"She’d surprised Jay, but she’d surprised herself more. Even if she’d never been strong enough to stand up for herself, Jay gave her the strength to do it for him. Jay gave her that. He’d been her strength and her shelter through all of this."

Jay! I fell in love with him. Although he's tough, he wasn't heartless and he helped Em when she had nowhere to go. He protected her when assholes got in her way. Told her how beautiful and smart and brave she was when she thought she couldn't go on. He took care of her; and needless to say, he was perfect.

"I’m sorry. You’re right. From now on, I promise to look both ways before I cross any streets.” His smile slipped loose and a laugh came along with it. “I’ll even let you hold my hand.”

“Mornin’, beautiful.” That made her smile.
Score.
“Hardly,” she laughed. “I’ve had what, one shower in the past . . . two weeks?”     “Yeah, well, I think street chic works for you.”

This is a suspenseful and romantic read that you wouldn't want to put down.

"He planted a soft, warm kiss on her lips, and then pulled back just enough to whisper in her ear, “Welcome home.”

This book really makes you sit back and appreciate the things we tend to take for granted, a roof over our heads, food in our bellies, hot water etc etc I could sit here all day listing them..

No matter how bad things could get in life I'd never wish being a homeless person on anyone..

Sigh....This book had so much potential!!!

3.5 Stars

So this is book starts out with Em running away from home. We don't know initially why but that something isn't right at home...something so horrible she would leave home with only a backpack and about $50 to her name.

Right off the bat Em is having a difficult time in a new city. She's trying to find her way around figure out what to do but the streets are cruel especially to a new kid.

In comes Jay....Jay has been living on the streets for 2 years and knows how to survive living on the streets. When he notices Em for the first time he doesn't want to help her but there's this pull between the two and eventually as I'm sure you can guess they start to take care of one another.

Now this book started out really really good to me. I haven't come across a book like this before and it was interesting seeing what it's like to live and survive on the streets through Jay & Em's eyes.

With Jay you see the experience he has with his surroundings and people and what it takes to make it day by day. With Em we get to see how overwhelming it is for a kid to suddenly throw themselves into this world and try to learn how to survive.

I was actually enjoying the story of life on the streets more than the actual romance. Now don't get me wrong....the kiss in the ally was HOT!!! But I just wanted more....I wanted to delve into the romance more. Pick apart their brains more. Just....more.

I didn't care for the ending...while it was a sweet ending...I just didn't feel it. Again I wanted more at the end. It just seemed like everything wrapped up too quickly.

But I am really glad I read this book. It is a beautiful story! A sad story but this is a reality for some kids. My heart broke for Jay & Em and I wanted to jump through the book and hug them and help them out.

This story really did open my eyes to the hopelessness some kids on the streets feel. Not all runaways are juvenile delinquents. We need to remember that always. Some kids are just running away from a troubled past and picking their lesser of two evils.

I really appreciate Jamie Canosa writing this book and bringing awareness to such a sad situation.

Another absolutely amazing book from the wonderful, Jamie Canosa! I honestly wasn't expecting to be asked by Jamie to beta read this book and then receive it at the beginning of February but I am so glad that I did get asked! As soon as I started reading Fight or Flight I honestly couldn't put it down! I kept wanting to read on and seeing more of the different challenges that Jay and Emerson were going to have to face as a couple and also to survive! I honestly loved everything about this book from the plot to the characters! The plot was quite scary actually but it was very realistic and it really shows you what some people have to go through every day to survive! The plot was quite sad to read and also to watch the characters go through what they did was heart-breaking but it shows you that even in your darkest hour, you can find love and that one person who will save you! I also loved that Jamie didn't sugar-coat the plot! The characters were written amazingly! Emerson 'Em' was the main character and I just loved her! She had been through a lot before this book starts and then she goes through a lot during the book as well! You can't help but feel sorry for her! In this book she learns how to stand on her own two feet, with her love interest's help, and she manages to turn into a stronger person! Jay was the love interest of Em and he was perfect! He protected Em and the whole way through this book Jay was determined to do what he could to help Em and to keep her safe! Em and Jay's relationship developed at the perfect pace! I was enthralled with their relationship as it was in such a dangerous environment but it was so sweet! I also loved that this book was written in dual point of views! I really want another book to this one as I want to read more of Jay and Em's story as I this couple and this book are definitely one of my favourites! When I beta read this book it didn't have a cover so I had my own image of what I thought the cover could have looked like and the cover that this book has is stunning! I had a similar image in my head but they are similar! Big thank you to Jamie for letting me Beta read Fight or Flight for her!

4.5 troubled stars!

One of the best YA stories I've read this year.
Em, short for Emerson, runs away from the house that had been everything but a home for her. Orphan and under the guard of disturbed relative, she decides that even the streets can offer her a better life. And that's where she ends up. In a big and busy city with nowhere to go, nobody to go to and no money, just the pure desire to be away from 'him'.
Right after she arrived at the train station she has her bag stolen. Despite losing the 'little' she had, this is when she crosses path with the 'mysterious' Jay who becomes the key to her survival in the concrete jungle.
Jay is homeless and make a living from small thefts and occasional small jobs. He could tell Em had nothing do to with big cities and 'street' life from the moment he laid eyes on her, and despite his reluctance he becomes her 'life' guardian.
It's the beautiful and heartbreaking story of two young and troubled souls who have nothing but each other trying to survive the challenges and dangers of a big city streets.
The language is moderate clean and there are no 'graphic' scenes whatsoever.
I gave the book 4.5 stars because things were kinda rushed at the end and I found it kinda hard to believe they would get away that 'easily'.

An Amazon freebie that turned out to be something much more than I expected, along with an introduction to a new-to-me author that I will continue to follow. “Fight or Flight” is a shocking look into the horrors of life on the street and the sad and cruel realities that force young people to choose running away from the roof over their heads.

Emerson and Jay were two broken young adults who felt they had no other choice but to runaway and make a life on the streets. Together they helped each other survive their circumstances. In one sense, they were luckier than some in that they found a few people who could help a little when times became too much. Along the way, and amid the turmoil and struggle to survive, Jay and Em fell in love. And when things took a turn for the worse, neither gave up.

The ending seemed a bit rushed and it left me with some unanswered questions. I was disappointed that there wasn’t an epilogue to tidy up the loose ends and elaborate on Jay and Em’s happily-ever-after. It appears that this is a series so I’m hopeful there’s more to their story – one with a roof over their heads, food in their bellies, warm clothes to wear, and far from life on the streets.

I cannot believe a book filled with so many obstacles could be such a refreshing read. If you are looking for a billionaire Adonis with a virgin fetish or an indecisive drama queen, this story is not for you.

God, how do I review the story without spoiling it? Hmmm....... This is a story of fear ,trust ,friendship, determination, angst and most importantly LOVE. This is the story of human emotions. Jamie Canosa, you told a beautiful STORY (no erotic fluff, an actually story HOORAY!!)......that I wish didn't have to end.

First I want to thank Jamie for the great opportunity to read her new book and I am sorry that I couldn’t review it sooner, but I have a solid reason for this.

Fight or Flight is that kind of book that you finish, close it and you just keep thinking at it. It has been on my mind for a couple of weeks and every time I wanted to say something about it, I just couldn’t find the proper words and I still find it difficult to speak about it. I feel that I don’t know enough words in English to express myself in such manner to do this book justice.

I will need to start by saying that this is a beautiful story set in a dark place and time. I was amazed by the realistic way the book was written in and the way it literary didn’t let me breath at times. The parts in which both Em and Jay were in an almost danger were so intense that I could feel their fear and pain. I can easily say that Fight or Flight was a very emotional reading.

I loved all the characters, even the way the bad guys were constructed. They were creepy, but very realistic, which gave me chills. Of course the creepiest of them was Em’s uncle, whom I can’t describe in too many words because those are all improper words, but he is sick…he is a very sick man and I wouldn’t want to have that kind of person around me. He is that kind of person that can hurt someone and make her believe that it was only her fault.

Em started off as a scared 17 year old girl that decided to run away from home. For some reason she believed that life on the street is way better than being at home. She was scared and alone in a new and dangerous world, but she learns to adapt with the help of Jay. She grows up a lot towards the end of the novel; she becomes stronger and more confident and slowly separates herself from her past.

Jay is great. He tries to stay away from Em because he knows for sure that she will bring him trouble, but at the same time he is aware that she will not resist on the streets. He is sweet and understanding and he is always taking care of her even though he has no obligation.

They slowly learn how to relate on each other and help when needed. The amount of bad things they go thru is scary, but somehow they always succeed.

The ending made me sad, even though it was a happy one. For Em and Jay everything turned out ok, but unfortunately in the real world things rarely turns out that good.

I’m going to try and put into words how I feel about this book but I don’t think even that will do it Justice. I can tell you this will be one of my Top Reads for 2013 I was that impressed.
This story is an intense, fast flowing, well written, heart stopping, and emotional read.
Jamie draws you in from the first page her writing is just outstanding, you find yourself caught up in this story. It really pulls at your heart strings and you will find you won’t be able to put it down till you know how Em and Jay’s story ends. And yes I cried at the end because after everything Em and Jay go through they both deserved their happy ever after.
"It's hard to look for the light when you're lost in darkness." This quote pretty much sums up Emerson for me. She runs from the life she has lived for years with her abusive uncle with no idea where she is going. The fear, the guilt, the hate for herself that this man has caused her leaves you heartbroken like I said pulls at your heart strings.
And then her light that one person who she has no choice to trust comes in the form of Jay. OH Jay if I could hug and kiss this man I would. He takes Em under his wing because he can see she won’t survive on the streets she is an easy target. And then their journey begins. Trying to survive on the streets isn’t easy, food is hard to find, people will steal your only blanket and the police will raid the squat you live in. But there are a few good people out there who are willing to help, Sam being one of them, I loved his character he really does try and help the homeless kids. Through all this Em begins to see she can be strong, she can stand up for herself and she can trust and love. It was such a pleasure to see the love grow between Em and Jay and when you find out Jay’s background you get why he protects the ones he loves. When Em finds herself in hospital her greatest fear is brought back to life and after running again trying to find somewhere to sleep she does the one thing she has to do to keep Jay alive and finds herself back where she started. Now these scenes for me where heart stopping moments and I even said out loud “Oh god someone help her” Do Jay and Em find their light through all the Darkness? You will have to read to find out the answer to that. I highly highly recommend this book.

Emerson runs away from home or from "HIM", but the reader does not know who "HE" is and why. On her first day on the streets, homeless, not sure where she is going to go, Emerson leaves her backpack next to her when someone steals it. Jay was observing this and takes her in. Jay is also homeless. He has been on the streets awhile. He know how hard it is and both of them are trying to survive.

I thought I was going to love this book. I loved the premise, but the flow of the story did not work for me.

I just could not get through this. It felt like the story was not going anywhere. I was half way through the book and I still did not know who "HE" was and why she ran away from home. Is "HE" her father, her uncle, her guardian?!?!? And why was Jay protecting Emerson?? It is written in dual POVs and in his POV, he is just annoyed and bothered by her. He also states how she is plan looking. Then he thinks how she is useless and will never survive on her own. So if he feels all these things about Em - why does he try to help her?!?!? It would have been better if it was written in one POV - Emerson's.

I hate when authors drag out a plot. Just tell me who "HE" and what he did to Em so I can understand why she would rather die than go back to him OR help me understand why Jay is so protective of Em. At 59% I quit. I can't stand when things drag. There has to be more to a story then finding out the characters' objectives.

This may work for you. I am not telling you not to read it. You may love it.

I received this book free from the author in exchange for an honest review.
OMG!! I love this cover! And the book was amazing! This book has approximately 350 pages and I flew through it in a few hours, I literally could not put it down until it was finished. This book is both sad and beautiful at the same time. It talks about a lot of real life situations that were sometimes hard to hear but made me realize what some people have to deal with on a daily basis in order to survive. The story is also cute and heartwarming in a weird way. The ending made me very happy and I can't wait to read the next book.
I love Emerson. She is so brave to have survived what she went through and have escaped even though she knew she would have to live on the streets. She may have been inexperienced in that environment but like she said she would rather die on the streets then at home. I also fell in love with Jay. He didn't have to help Em but he knew she wouldn't survive without him. I really think that they complimented each other perfectly and I'm so glad that they found one another. Despite the circumstance. I also really liked Sam. It's nice to see that there are still good people in the world.
I LOVED THIS BOOK! I can't wait to get started on book two. Jamie Canosa is an author to watch out for. I need to find out if Em and Jay finally get their happily ever after. I would recommend this novel to EVERYONE!!!

3.5 Stars!

I know this seems like a low rating for me, but I actually did enjoy this book.
It was just a little too short for me! It had a HEA---but it ended kind of abruptly, I thought, and I wanted to know more!

This is a sad book... It was a little difficult to read at times. Jay and Em are slumming it on the streets in what I think is New York City, trying to find a better life and escape the demons they left at home. It's so sad that Em and Jay had such a terrible home life, that they were forced out onto the streets to escape it. You know things have to be pretty bad when starving half to death, constantly trying to find a warm, dry place to sleep out of the elements, and trying to stay safe from pimps and druggies, is a better alternative than going home.

This book really made me stop and appreciate EVERYTHING I have, and never want to take it for granted ever again. A lot of times, we get caught up in our lives, and forget to be thankful... after reading this book, I was truly reminded how BLESSED I am! There's a great message here, and this was a good, short read. Would I read it again?--- No. Was it worth my time?--- Yes.
Should you move it to the top of your TBR-- Definitely not. But for a freebie, it was enjoyable!

My heart stopped about 10 times while reading this book, but I didnt cry until I read the last page. Would have been 5 stars if I got to read from both Em and Jays POV the last few chapters. I wanted to read what he went through and how it all come about not just have it done. But otherwise... phew, im glad my heart can now get back to a steady heart beat cos every page of this book kept me on edge! I hope there will be a book about Al, I need to know she's ok. I recommend everyone read this even if its just to appreciate everything and everyone you have in your life.

I would have given 5 stars if I hadn't wanted to slap the heroine so many times. Yes I am one of those people who gets thoroughly pissed off when the big strong man says "stay put" and then the girl (who can't hold her own) decides to "help" and ends up in more trouble.

Other than that a fantastic emotional read.

This is a heart-warming story of survival. It is a page turner book for me because I wanted to see them safe and sound in the end. Em was a sweet heroine, but mostly made very unwise decisions. Jay was a great hero with a beautiful, kind soul. The ending was way too rushed.

Fight or Flight by Jamie Canosa is one of the best YA/NA Contemporary books I've read in ages and ages. And ages.

This excerpt is taken from my review on Into the Hall of Books. Read more here: http://www.intothehallofbooks.com/201...

The first thing you need to know is this:
Emerson is leaving. She doesn't care where she goes. She just has to get out.

The book opens as Emerson is waiting up in the middle of the night, rocking away in her rocking chair. She grabs her heavy backpack and tiptoes out of her house, careful to avoid the third-to-last step in the stairwell. She knows that if she's caught, there will be hell to pay - or worse. She has $52.83 in her pocket, which isn't much, but she'll just have to make that last. She can't let HIM hear her leave. Her entire survival depends on slipping away unnoticed, without HIM finding out. She needs to be far, far away when he realizes she's gone.

In thinking and planning ahead, Emerson decided to leave at dawn on a Saturday - at a time when there would be the least amount of cars out, to avoid prying eyes. She'll ride trains all day, go as far as possible. Once she gets there, she'll ditch her wallet, her pictures, her insurance cards, her Social Security card, everything everything everything that makes her Emerson James. She'll be a different person. Forever. And finally, she'll be away from HIM.

The second thing you need to know is this:
Jay spots Em at the train station. Wide-eyed, she stands out among the crowd.

Em has arrived to the city. She's done the things she said she would do. Now what? She has no idea. And it shows.

Jay sees her with her wide eyes and her full backpack - like someone just begging for trouble in the city. Just like someone without a clue. Like someone begging to be mugged, beaten, hurt in some way. She ought to just stand up and announce to the whole place HEY I'M HERE AND I'M NEW IN TOWN - COME TAKE MY STUFF AND EAT ME ALIVE! Jay decides to follow her because he's already noticed that someone else is following her too, and he knows this guy - he's nothing but trouble. Jay feels protective over this girl for some reasons, which he really can't afford. Out here, it's every man for himself...but the look on this girl's face is something that he just can't walk away from. The fear, the sadness, the hollow, empty desperation behind her eyes...

Em stops for a second to look at a map and sits her backpack down. Immediately, the other guy that is following her grabs it. What does she do? She takes off after the guy to get her stuff back! WHOA NOW. Jay stops her, tells her that the guy that swiped her bag will likely kill her for whatever is in there - it's best to just let it go. Jay is hoping that what he has just said will scare her enough that she'll go back home BUT NOPE! He doesn't know what she's running from, though. Jay doesn't know about HIM.

The third thing you need to know is this:
Against his better judgment, Jay takes Em to his squat.

Nobody shares their squat, but Jay takes Em back to his place. (That's a really big, big deal.) Em is a little afraid but she has no better option and Jay seems nice enough, so she goes. Jay knows that bringing this girl with him means he has another person to look after, another person to slow him down every day, another person to attract attention, another mouth to feed. But he does it anyway. Every day, Jay wears himself out looking for day-jobs to try and earn enough money to buy food for he and Em for that day, and then he does it again the next day. And the next day. And the next day. He makes Em promise to stay inside - don't leave the house. She doesn't yet know how to survive on the streets and with her looks and her small size, she'd likely be taken or taken advantage of right away. It doesn't take long for Jay to work himself sick. Literally, sick. And then there is just one thing after another that threatens to knock these two down. But they work together and they fight hard to survive.

*********************************************

Good gracious, this book. When I started Fight or Flight by Jamie Canosa, I have to admit it was because the summary sounded pretty good and the cover looked amazing. I had NO IDEA how much depth the story contained, how incredible it was, and how invested I would become in the lives of Em and Jay.

In the beginning, I knew right away that Emerson was leaving; I could feel her desperation to not just leave, but to flee her circumstances - so I knew that she didn't care where she ended up and how awful her situation ended up being as long as she was away from HIM. It takes a while for Emerson (aka Em) to open up to Jay and to the reader about why she is so desperate to get away, but by the time she did, she had already won me over and I WAS TOTALLY ON HER SIDE. There is no way you can read this book and doubt this girl. For Em to be willing to live on the streets, to go without food, to be without blankets in the Northeastern US in the wintertime, to go without medications after being hit by a car, to to without bathing, without anything - something suspect had to be going on, ya know? It took Em a while to trust Jay, and I felt so thankful when she finally did.

Jay was acting on instinct and his gut when he followed Em in the train station - and thankfully so. When he acted against his better judgment to bring her to his squat, it was awfully good of him to be so giving and kind. When he got up after little to no sleep to stand in line and hope hope hope for work...then to actually work hard all day for just enough money for a little bit of food...then to share it with her while starving himself - oh, what kindness. When Jay was protecting Em from other people that had less-than-honorable intentions for her, I respected him so much because he put himself in harm's way over and over for this girl he barely even knew. Jay's character did nothing but make me like him the more and more I read him. There were times when he had to act out of desperation for their situation, but I never ever faulted him - I can't even begin to put myself in the situation of these two.

I never felt like Em or Jay annoyed me, and that was something I was wondering about as I read. Sometimes when you read these books that are so issues-heavy (particularly with a female character that has an issue) it's easy to feel manipulated or annoyed by her OR to feel like she is overly whiny. I never felt this way with Em - or with Jay. They accepted their circumstances - sure, they wished for better - but they accepted how things were and they worked together to make the best of what they had. They even found time to laugh a little when they could.

Another thing that I appreciated so much with this book was that there was no overlying romantic tone to the story. Em and Jay were far too busy trying to survive the streets and trying to find food and stay alive - they didn't have time to have a romantic relationship or to have swoony, steamy scenes. Yes, they did lie closely beside each other a couple of times to use each other for body warmth, which is realistic. Yes, they did become friendly companions and establish trust and a rapport with one another, which is realistic. But a romance? Not really - nothing to speak of until the the story is established, when it was appropriate. And even then, it begins as a love that is different than we normally read about because this relationship begins in a way that is different than those that we normally read about.

I just loved Fight or Flight - I finished the story and felt like I had found a real jewel that I could read again and again. There were a few characters in the story along with Em and Jay that I liked quite a bit, and I'm excited that Author Jamie Canosa is writing a story that will feature one of them. I KNOW that I will not look at this circumstance - young people living on the streets - in the same way again, ever. I know that I am still thinking about this story and I finished it quite a while ago. Things like a bed, blankets, a shower, warm food, toothpaste - chose comforts of life - these things randomly make me think of Em and Jay and how hard they had to fight just to not let life get them down.

For those that are afraid that this story might be too much of a drag - it really isn't. It's a fantastic survival story and it ends on a positive note. I recommend Fight or Flight to readers who enjoy YA/NA contemporary stories with issues and a hint of romance, great characters, and survival stories. I am anxiously waiting for Sink or Swim, the spin-off that I mentioned above, and I am anxiously awaiting for the sequel to this story, which looks like it will be a continuation of the story of Em and Jay. SO MUCH MORE to come from Author Jamie Canosa and you guys, I am so, so excited.

"One day, he'd show her exactly who he saw when he looked at her. One day, he'd make sure she saw it, too. But, for now, he'd just hold her close and keep loving her enough for the both of them."

I wrote this book for the unseen. Those shrouded in so much darkness, they don't think anyone can see them. I see you. And the light is there. Just keep looking.

Fight Or Flight by Jamie Canosa proved to be an honest and heart-wrenching story. The two main character’s lives are filled with an incredible amount of struggles and hardships but despite all they have stacked against them and how easy it would be to just give up, Em and Jay prove to readers and each other just how strong and brave they each are.

When this story first started, I had an idea of what Em’s past consisted of but I did not find out for sure until halfway through the book. Even though I was unsure, I was still able to understand that she was running away from a life full of a lot of pain. People do not give up their home, consistent meals, warmth, clothing, and a place to sleep for something minor. The fact that Em was able to leave all of that stability behind, regardless of what her home life was like, proved to me just how brave she was. Even though Em had the right to absolutely hate the world and the hand that fate handed to her, I was shocked to find just how positive and upbeat she was able to remain in some hard situations. Sure there were moments when the severity of the situation she was in became too much and she lost it, but there were those moments where she refused to let negativity take over and I really appreciated that about her.

From the very first moment Em runs away from home, she is faced with one obstacle after another. Living on the streets takes a certain kind of person, someone with street smarts in the most literal way possible. As brave as Em is, she lacks a lot of the knowledge needed to survive on the streets. This is where Jay comes in. We don’t get to hear Jay’s side of the story quite as much as Em’s, but from what we do know, Jay is a loner, preferring to do things on his own as it is hard enough to keep yourself alive let alone someone else. However, there is something about Em that draws him to her, and pretty soon he takes on the role as her knight in shining armor. Jay does so much to protect Em and keep her safe without thinking twice about it, often times putting himself at risk, and it proved just how great of a person he was. Seeing Jay transform from this gruff, hardened, and angry guy into someone with so much love and compassion was truly a great thing to witness. Even though he took care of Em in nearly every tough situation, you could also see how Em certainly played her part in saving Jay too.

Just because Jay and Em join forces, does not mean that things get instantly easier for them. In fact, they get much tougher and their situation seems to get worse and worse as the story goes on. When they side-step or survive one dilemma, there always seems to be another one lurking around the corner. I certainly appreciated how Jamie did no sugar-coat the troubles that come with living on the street. Eating, showering, falling asleep in a bed with pillows and blankets are things we often take for granted but these characters considered themselves lucky if they had any one of these necessities. My heart did not appreciate the constant worry of something horrible possibly happening to Jay and Em but it sure made for a gripping, on the edge of your seat type of story.

Despite all of the dark and horrible things this book consisted of, there were still those moments that melted my heart, made me smile, or a combination of the both. Jay and Em’s relationship starts in what is clearly not the best of situations. That means it was a romance unlike anything I have ever read before. Jamie had the option to make their relationship just as sad as the other stuff they were going through but she instead used it to filter in some sweet, light-hearted moments in the book. I think this worked so well for the story. Just when I would think that I couldn’t handle the sadness anymore, Jay would do something for Em, and my heart would get happy again.

Fight Or Flight was an incredibly honest portrayal of how life can be while living on the streets. Jay and Em are certainly faced with a lot of hardships, so much so that it at times seems they will never see an end to their problems, but in the end it left me with a smile on my face and a happy, if slightly disgruntled (remember those catastrophes giving me mild heart attacks every five minutes?) heart. I would definitely suggest this book to anyone looking for a gripping story full of ups and downs, two loveable and honorable characters, and an ending that will make all the tough parts worth it.

A touching and wonderful story!

Fight or Flight first introduces us to Emerson, who has run away from home to escape the abuse she is living in. On her first day in the big city, she's clearly in over her head. All her belongings are stolen, she fails finding shelter, and is almost killed. In comes the beautiful savior Jay. He takes her under his wing as it's clear she refuses to return home. When her past ends up finding her, Emerson now has the opportunity to fight for Jay or flee back home with her abuser.

This story was told perfectly. It was quiet and unassuming. I never felt it was trying to be more than it was. It wasn't flashy or dramatic. And that made it utterly remarkable given the topic. I have read books on homelessness and this is the first I felt that really spent the time to tell the story of the homeless youth. It was exhausting to follow them as they searched for food and shelter night after night. Little commodities, like a shower or seasonal clothing, became tests of courage and creativity. The author did a wonderful job of giving a glimpse into the misconceptions of those living on the streets.

Jay was the perfect hero. He saw something special in Emerson and, despite all the extra stress and pressure it took to provide for her as well, he never stopped trying. He wanted to protect her from the ugly in the world she was now trying to survive in. Initially, he tries to convince her to go back home. But once Emerson reveals a part of herself, it changes everything between them.

"That's what you're not getting, Em. No one lives here. You either survive her, or you die here. But no one lives here. So, why don't you just go on back home?" "I'd rather die here."

After Emerson reveals her reason for leaving home, he slowly longs to comfort her in some way and eventually gives her the only thing he can; teaching her how to live on the streets. Emerson was a strong and intriguing character to read. She wants nothing more than to prove to herself and Jay she can handle this world. She never complains about the cold or hunger, all she wants to do is help provide for them. And she is still able to find delight in their times together, whether it be getting a warm shower or hot food for dinner.

As their feelings for each other turn to love, Emerson has to deal with intimacy issues caused by her past abuse. And Jay is absolutely beautiful in helping Emerson overcome her issues. He is patient and supportive. He has earned her trust and love and he absolutely refuses to lose it, which was so endearing.

"There was no one else like Jay. No one else who even came close to this boy who had saved her, sacrificed for her, cared for her, and put himself in danger for her." -Emerson

And that part where Emerson finally discovers the secrets to Jay's past? It was a simple gesture that spoke volumes to their connection and Emerson's love for this wounded boy.

"She already had enough ugly in her life, he didn't need to add to it. But she hadn't shied away. Hadn't demanded an explanation. Hadn't pitied him. She'd just touched him-and more than just his skin." -Jay

Beautiful! My only qualm with this book was that I felt the ending was a little rushed. I loved these characters and wished the story would have been expanded a bit more. But despite that small hiccup, I truly loved this story. It's the first book I've read in a long time that was able to entertain me without having to use huge twists or sweeping declarations of love. It was simply a story about two people finding a love that makes surviving easy, now that they have something to fight for.

Highly recommend!

In Fight of Flight we have two individuals that are both broken. On the outside they seem fine, but on the inside they have been severely damaged. They have been knocked down too many times to count, and by the people who are supposed to love them the most.

The moment I met Em, I wanted to snuggle her and hug her up. It was love at first read. She reminds me of a little bird. Not an ordinary bird, but a beautiful bird that is ready to take flight. And that is exactly what Em does. She takes flight. Em wanders into a new world, so to speak. That world being, the life of a vagabond. This aspect of the book scared me for Em, since she was so innocent and had been living under lock and key for so long. I was worried for her, and just wanted to protect her. Because what if that monster that she took flight from, found her again?

Jay captivated me right away with the way he carries himself, and with the way he handles situations----it makes my heart smile. He reminds me of an angel. Considering the life he left behind to live on the streets, he shows no hate or ill-will towards another person. The only thing he does is look out for number one, but that is what he has to do. Live or die, and I prefer he live. Because by golly Jay chipped himself into my heart, bit by bit. The little bugger. Anywho, as I was saying he only looks after numero uno. Until one day when Em wanders into his path because she was in trouble. And by trouble, I mean in deep doo doo. Jay to the rescue!! Just imagine him in a Blue Cape and a Red Leotard with a Big J emblazoned across his chest. Yes that is how the whole scenario played out..ok not really, but it sounded awesome, right?...So, what happens now that there are two people to find food and shelter for? Could this be devastating for both of them? I certainly hope not!

From the start Jay was intrigued with Em, and vice versa. Gosh I LOVED that so much. Like Super LOVED LOVED. Jay may be Mr. I Look After Only Me, but that isn't the case anymore, he makes room for Em in his life and takes her under his wing. He made sure she was fed, had a roof over her head, and was always protected. Especially from her monster. These two kiddos were each other saving graces. In my eyes they are soul mates, and were destined to meet.

From the very first to the very last page of this book, I was hooked. At first I was leaning towards rating this book four stars, but once I completely finished this book, I knew it had to be a four and a half star book. The ending did me in. I loved it, well basically I just loved everything about this book, and how the author touches on very mature and serious subject matter. These situations happen in real life, and not just in fictional novels. But what the author wrote was wonderful. In no way does she desensitize any of these issues. In fact I think this helps make readers understand what these victims go through, and possibly empathize with them. I hope you enjoy this book as much as I did, and feel the connection and overall contentment that Jay and Em share.

This novel... makes you appreciate everything you take for granted on a daily basis. Having possessions, owning things, having a fridge full of food, having money... all of those things are important in this game called life we all play but the most important is love and trust and family. The two main characters in the novel, Em and Jay, don't have any of those things. The things they have are the clothes on their back. They live each day wondering where they're going to sleep that night and where their next meal is going to come from.

This book hurt to read. It hurt because they both chose to live life, to fight at living, instead of succumbing to their fate in the family they were dealt and eventually ending up killed by the hands of the people who are supposed to love you the most. And the reason why that hurt to read is because in a perfect world, your family should be the ones keeping you safe and protecting you from the outside world. You shouldn't have to live in fear of the inside world and the fact that a brother, dad, uncle, mom, etc. could cause harm to you hurts to know. Its hard to know that sometimes the best thing to do in order to prove that you can fight and win in the game of life is to take flight.

This novel teaches you that just because some people aren't your blood doesn't mean that they can't love you and protect you with everything they've got. The relationship Em and Jay form is perfectly imperfect and makes your heart feel better that they're together even though they have to struggle to remain together. The love and devotion they have towards each other from the get go makes you either wish you had someone like that you could depend on or if you do have that, it makes you want to hold them close and tell them how much they mean to you.

This is a definite must read. I've been touched by this novel like I have no others. I wasn't planning on finishing it in one sitting but I couldn't put it down. I had to know what happened - how their story ended - and how their lives continued. It was fate that Jay and Em met but love is what kept them together and you don't see that often enough.

The author contacted me to read and review this.

Now that we've got that out of the way, what really grabbed my attention about this was how it revolved around kids living on the streets. I hadn't read many books like that. Or like, any that I can think of. So I wanted to see what it was all about.

If this is even remotely close to what really living on the streets is like, I have a new kind of respect for people who do it. It's insanely hard, from the looks of it and everyone thinks you're up to no good. I can't even imagine what that would feel like. Or having to find a new place to stay just about every night.

I think this book has a really realistic feel to it, in that you know there are people who go through this every day, teens or otherwise. And Jay and Em both have issues at home that made them decide living on the streets was the best option they had. It's sad that that's true.

Beyond that though, I do think there are a few issues with this book. I felt that Em was stereotyped a little as the damsel in distress. Yes, I know she's the one who has no experience living on the street while Jay does, but she really did remind me of Daphne from Scooby Doo: everything she tries to do ends up being screwed up. Couldn't she have gotten a break every once in a while to do something right? And guess who was there every step of the way to pick up the pieces? Yup.

Ok, really that's the only problem I had with the book. I would have liked it more if Em had played a stronger role instead of being the classic DiD. Otherwise, I thought it was a really thought-provoking read with relatable and engaging characters.

I remember looking for a book like this a long time ago, after reading Callum and Harper and being utterly disapointed. This book hit the mark. I loved it. It had everything I expected a book about two homeless teens to have. The suffering , the fight for food, and eventually the fight for each other.
Now this book is in no way perfect.

It suffers from a mild case of

Insta Love Syndrom

Unbelievability at one Point.

And A HEA that was just too Good and Convenient to be true . (That HEA Worked though, and in all honest I needed it. Because I was becoming heartbroken at how much Jay and Emereson had to go through, I was dying for them to get a break)

Since were talking about Jay and Emerson, Let me just say that I loved them by the way. Jay was sweet in his need to protect Em. He needed something to fight for. She was the perfect solution. And Emerson needed someone to care for, she was this broken girl, who eventually learned strength.

Like I said this book wasn't perfect. I've seen a lot of reviewers mention a homeless shelter in the book, and how it was completely no existent in the book.

This was an issue for me at first, until I realized that these two were on minors on the run, and maybe they were afraid to be questioned. Maybe they were afraid of any adults turning them in.

All in all this was a great read, I greatly enjoyed it. I will most definitively will be reading book two in the series.

OMG I freaking loved this book!! It was so damn good. This opens up with Emerson (Em) running away from home. Her first moments in a new town and with only her backpack and some meager belonging doesn't turn out so well. Within moments a thief takes her pack and she is left alone and scared. At the same time she meets Jay another homeless person who steps in to warn her off chasing the thief. Later that night alone, freezing, hungry and being harmed by another homeless man Jay reappears and saves her. This is where these two strangers connect and their relationship was beautiful. I just adored Jay. He was so thoughtful and brave. Jay took Em on and became her friend, savor and later the love of her life.

These two had a rough go of it . It broke my heart to read about all their struggles. Made me thankful for the food that I have and a warm home to sleep in. I did love when Jay was teaching Em the ropes and places to go to shower, find blankets and even clothes. Places I would have never thought of. Each one of their stories about why they ran away was heart breaking. I think the growth of Emerson was amazing. The ending was a little too simple after all they endured. But I loved it just the same.
