Pablo Picasso (1881-1973) es considerado por muchos el artista más importante del siglo XX. Nacido en Málaga, Picasso demostró su talento desde una edad muy temprana y se apresuró en tomar contacto con los círculos artísticos más importantes de su tiempo, primero en Barcelona y posteriormente en París. I’ve always liked Kandinsky. My favourite piece is Decisive Pink. The book was simple enough to read but for me the best part of the book was the pictures of the art.

Kandinsky's imagination, originality, self-assurance, and methodological approach are celebrated in this condensed treatise about his work. It is difficult to "sum up" an artist so tidily and succinctly as has been done here, particularly one so prolific and complex as Kandinsky. Kandinsky, like his works, is self-contained, neither owing anything to the past or rejecting it, simply moving forward on a trajectory that was particular to his interests and goals. As the writer states, "Kandinsky only wanted to become himself, without yet knowing what it was he wanted to become."

The measured respect that is given to Kandinsky is one of the best aspects of this little book. The author "gets" Kandinsky but is also able to convey his main tendencies so that even readers unfamiliar with this artist will "get" him, too.

A wonderful and quick read about a fascinatingly eclectic and complex artist. Really enjoyed reading poignant observations—like these:

"Like Cézanne and Hemingway (who studied clarity of self-expression from the former’s paintings), Kandinsky wanted only to become himself, without yet knowing what it was he wanted to become."

"The artist’s gaze broke through the amalgam of reality that previously had sent him stable pictures of the objective world. He saw the secret rhythms of color, line and form.

"...for the consciousness of man is neither great nor small, and only in it do worlds have their existence."
