Eve’s writing began with a toy typewriter she received at age four. Much later, she wrote poems for school publications and work related newsletters until landing a job writing ad copy and selling advertising space for major metropolitan, and community newspapers. Her first novel Penniless Hearts, is part adventure, part romance, and a gentle reminder to communicate. Eve has published poems, fiction stories and non-fiction, in various anthologies, some of which are: Anything Prose and Poetry Too, Open Doors-Fractured Fairy Tales, and Not Your Mother’s Book on Dogs and Travel. She followed up Penniless Hearts with Penniless Souls, also a travel adventure but set in the Nevada desert. A short faith-based novella titled, The Fifth Commandment came later, and most recently, The Happy War, which is also a romantic travel adventure. When not writing, she likes swimming, reading and walking her Italian Greyhound mix.

“Well, it’s a long story, but generally if you listen to the National Geological surveyors, we are safe over here in Kauai. However, if you listen to Hawaiian folklore and the legends involving meles and chants recited by the islanders, you will learn that this area is the home of the restless goddess Pele. When her toes start tapping, I guess everyone has to watch out.” He smiled when he said the last part, almost as if he thought it seemed funny that modern day Hawaiians still believed such fantastical tales. ~ from Penniless Hearts

Penny Himmell, a graphic artist with a newspaper, is a restless young woman, looking for some excitement in her life when the reader first meets her. She's given to dreams and fantasies to escape from her sometimes drab life. She works under pressure from a rather overbearing and unappreciative boss Tina, while her father Carl seems content to overlook her. Her relationship with the man in her life, John, has lost much appeal; he seems entirely set in his ways, not particularly romantic, perfectly fine with things as they are. Penny finds herself at a crossroads, wanting something more. Be careful what you wish for; sometimes you get it.

On an impulse, Penny joins a flirtatious pilot on a trip to Hawaii for a few days, casting aside her expectations for a healthy dose of fun. Events go awry, however, as she quickly discovers what kind of man he is, and Penny finds herself drawn into misadventure and a journey of sorts with Hawaii as a backdrop, meeting new people, both good and not so good, along the way. Tina, meanwhile, ropes Carl and John into setting out to going after Penny, and their own stories, along with those of other characters, plays out as the stories converge. Carl and John have to come to terms with understanding what Penny means to them both, while Penny herself has to figure out what she really wants out of life.

Eve Gaal writes this book with strong characterization as a foundation. The characters each have distinct personalities, and once shaken out of the status quo that they're so used to come to life. Their personalities feel fleshed out, and most importantly, each of them have distinct voices. Penny as the core of the book is on a journey of discovery, a fanciful woman whose impulsive trip is completely understandable, and who she is by the end of the tale is someone who has changed. John and Carl, who start out generally taking this woman in their lives for granted, show surprising character growth. The character who sticks out as most surprising though is Tina. Overbearing and not terribly sympathetic at the outset, she changes over the course of the story, becoming steadily more likeable and more human.

The location itself takes on a life of its own as a character. Hawaii has a certain ethereal quality as a place, with its own pace of life, very different from the way things are on the mainland, and Penny finds herself immersed deep into it. From the culture to the scenery, the islands underlie everything, and the essence of this paradise soaks itself into the writing. The end result is that the reader finds themselves wanting to spend a few weeks- or months- soaking up the sun on a beach in Hawaii, or check out a lava field. Even if that means the locals will still see you as a tourist.

Penniless Hearts is a character driven romantic misadventure of sorts, a tale of growing and changing as people. It has a dreamlike quality to the writing, particularly Penny's inner voice. The plotlines tie together at their own pace, and the characters have a genuine sensibility to them, even the unpleasant ones. They feel real to the reader. The pacing of the novel works well, giving us a sense of fun, all while staying true to the journey.

I loved this book all the way through. There was nothing I didn't like. It was a fast paced and delightfully hilarious read. Every chapter had an unexpected surprise. The characters were true to life with unique voices and perceptions of what was going on. Eve Gaal did a fabulous job revealing what was going on in each of the characters' heads, even the insignificant ones.

Penny: She's the star of this book and is bored with her life, her job, and her boyfriend. So she takes off to Hawaii with Captain Dan Losegg, an airline pilot. She's a gal who wants some adventure, romance, and to forget about the boring everyday stuff at home. Will Penny get the adventure she bargained for or something more?

Tina: She is Penny's boss at the Globe. The woman appears to be a bi-polar bully. But ends up leading a wild goose chase to find her subordinate. According to her astro-chart she has a mission to play cupid. Who will Cupid capture?

John: He's Penny's boyfriend. He's lovable, loyal, and loves Penny with all his heart. But hey! He got comfy until he went to Penny's office to take her to lunch and bumped into Tina. Not long after that, he finds himself on a plane to Hawaii to find Penny. But will he be too late?

Carl: He's Penny's father, a retired Vet, and someone who relies on Penny to keep his daily routine going. Carl, too, ends up on the plane to Hawaii to find Penny. All the while, reminding John that he screwed up in not asking his daughter to marry him. Will he ever have grandchildren?

Captain Dan Losegg: He is the airline pilot who coaxes Penny to fly away with him to Hawaii. He is your classic shallow womanizer with a few surprises in his pants and a lot of baggage. Like Operation Penny. Will he even get to first base with Penny?

Darin: He is Tina's boyfriend who owns a big car dealership in Hawaii. He's got plenty of issues himself. Like being unfaithful to Tina and having a whole other business life besides cars. Will he get caught?

The ending was wonderful. That's all I will say, other than, I would read this again. It's an endearing read.

We all love bad boys, and Penny was no exception. Whilst her normal life is nothing but a well of boredom she decides to leave everything behind and follows her heart. And for a while the excitement and novelty really kicks Penny’s feet off.

But sometimes the man of your dreams is not the one you think he is and your prince charming can be found closer than you think… This story was full of twists and turns. It was a fun and easy read, something I’d definitely enjoy reading again on a beach or just relaxing on a garden swing.

Put on your lei, feel the warm wind of Hawaii, and let yourself fall for this entertaining romance for adults!

Penniless Hearts by Eve Gall
This novel begins with Penny, the main character who is stuck in a rut. Bored with her life, her job and her even more boring boyfriend, she longs for adventure. So, when she is offered a free holiday to Hawaii after a chance meeting with Captain Dan, she jumps at the chance – but gets rather more than she bargained for.
In the meantime, her domineering boss, Tina, is left holding the reins at work and decides to do something about it. A farcical story explodes across the pages when Tina, flanked by Penny’s boyfriend and father, who both have their own problems, all jet off to Hawaii to find Penny.
Add Captain Dan’s wife into the mix and Tina’s boyfriend, who just happens to live in Hawaii too, and you can imagine the bedlam that follows.
An easy read that that will keep you amused until the last page.

Riveting read!

Fancy going on an adventure to Hawaii with the spirited Penny and a cast of hilarious characters?
Fed up of her boring life, Penny jets off hoping for romance and adventure, blissfully unaware that she is being followed by her boyfriend, Father and work colleagues. Throw in a few dodgy characters, convincing villians, a variety of predicaments and you have a brilliant story. I loved the main character, she was very likeable and quirky and I found myself rooting for her throughout the book. The narrative flowed exceptionally well and was very well written. A thoroughly enjoyable entertaining read that I found hard to put down. Looking forward to reading more of this talented author's work.

Penniless Hearts will sweep readers off their feet into an intriguing romantic adventure to the Hawaiian Islands where the main character, Penny Himmel, meets an attractive pilot who promises romance; however, the romantic allure does a tailspin when the true intentions of her suitor are revealed, spiraling Penny into a dangerous encounter with drug smugglers. But, being the resourceful woman that she is, Penny takes charge and rules the day.
For readers wanting to escape to Hawaii, ride along with Penny because, with Penny, there is never a dull moment. The clever, short chapters drive the action forward with suspenseful, vibrant writing that is refreshing and lively.

Penniless Hearts is a wonderful read by author Eve Gaal. Penny is searching for the right man to fill what she thinks is a void in her life. Her job seems unfulfilling and she takes care of an aging father. She's dating a very nice man, John but he is a downhome type, not looking for adventure, so on a whim she decides to vacation in Hawaii with an airline pilot that she just met.

That's when all the fun begins. Unfortunately for Penny, Dan is married and his wife surprises him at the hotel. Penniless Hearts has many characters and Author Eve Gaal does a magical job of intimately weaving everyone to each other. I was very impressed and surprised each time a character linked to another. This is not just a romance; there's intrigue and humor that is also woven into the story.

The author does an exceptional job with descriptions of both people and places, so readers can clearly understand this book and picture themselves right there in the midst of all the action. I loved the independent nature of Penny, and no matter what she did, she seemed to be headed for trouble at each turn.

In the end, Penny discovers her true self and her true love through a series of dreams and by an encounter with an artist who had painted the very likeness of her from Hawaiian legends without even knowing Penny really existed.

The best part for me is that John never gives up searching for Penny, including flying to Hawaii with her father. It's a love any woman would wish for, but do Penny and John end up together, or does Penny finally find that man that her heart aches for?

There is so much going on in this book and I enjoyed every chapter and who was involved in what. There are some surprises too which only added to the genius of the author and her exceptional plots. I would recommend this book to anyone who loves romance, intrigue, and humor. I loved reading this novel and found it difficult to set it down.

I know this story will stick with me for a long time and I certainly hope this author plans on writing more books. I look forward to reading her next story.

Eve Gaal has penned a cute and even thought-provoking holiday romance and thriller, with a variety of colorful characters and a touch of humor. It’s an intelligent read and, like “Shirley Valentine,” involves a woman’s search for meaning in life. Most of the action occurs in Hawaii, on the Big Island, and on Kauai, my favorite destination in the world. We see Penny evolve from a young woman who takes no risks and is entrenched in a lacklustre lifestyle, to a free and courageous spirit who has at last found adventure and love. Adding to the mythological theme of the tale, Penny becomes the personification of Pele, the local deity of fire, lightning, wind, and an erupting volcano on Kauai. Including herself, the characters in “Penniless Hearts” evolve throughout the story much as we should in real life when presented with challenges.
Penny’s dreams and fantasies initially seem similar to those of a female Walter Mitty, but with one glaring difference: Penny takes a chance on a handsome airline pilot, flies off to Hawaii with him, and finds -- herself. She becomes the object of an intercontinental chase involving her devoted boyfriend, her formidable femme fatale boss, two thugs, the FBI and Hawaiian police force, and a couple of eccentric tourists.
The author created a variety of colorful similes and metaphors, and I didn’t find a single cliché or typo. As a senior, however, I doubt that Penny’s father, perhaps in his sixties, is a “very old man”! Finally, from wild adventures, dangers, romance, and discovery, we are led to the conclusion that there is “no place like home.”

Penniless Hearts, by Eve Gaal

I must begin with the fact that is out of my genre of preference (science fiction) and the first few pages had me wondering what I'd gotten myself into, committing to read a book I wasn't sure I'd be interested in, in the first place.

That said, I found Penniless Hearts completely engaging! As the story unfolded, all of the characters (whether major or minor) were completely fleshed out to the point where I felt I knew them personally, cheering for some, laughing and smirking at others. I think my favorite is Penny, as I can easily identify with her quirky personality.

It may not bother you, but I must say, there is one rather explicit, steamy scene that I finally skimmed over. Just me. Not my thing.

Aside from that, I found the story full of excitement, adventure, love interests, good character development, and scenes shifting effortlessly from one place or time to another, even as characters jumped from California to various spots on the Hawaiian Islands. I loved Eve's descriptive phrases, like "crawled into memories"..."drawing his name out like saltwater taffy..."

Carve out some time, pull up a seat with Mai Tai in hand and travel to Hawaii through this love adventure! Aloha!

Take one extremely talented female artist with a reckless heart, a brief encounter in a pharmacy and the magical islands of Hawaii; mix in drug smuggling, a confused boyfriend, some really bad guys and throw them in the pot and what you wind up with is a really delicious little romance/mystery entitled "Penniless Hearts." The story follows graphic artist Penny Himmel on what might be the wildest adventure of her life (and that's saying something for a woman who once dated a biker and, oh yeah, later dated a guy who modeled nude for a living.) A chance encounter with a charming airline pilot coupled with a job at which she works for an overbearing boss and a social life that includes caring for her aging dad while dating a guy who is steady, loyal, and - well - boringly predictable lead Penny to make what some might consider a rash decision to fly off on a sudden vacation that she hopes will inject a little excitement into her otherwise routine life. Boy, does it ever! If you like high-flying (excuse the pun) adventures with quirky heroines set in exotic locales then you're really going to like Eve Gaal's "Penniless Hearts."

I almost never read romance novels, but author Eve Gaal is a terrific writer, who drew me in to the very end with skillfully crafted characters and enthralling descriptive phrases. A talented novelist, she has spun a tale of romance, adventure, and drug smuggling mayhem that made for a richly entertaining read. Our heroine, Penny Himmel, is persuaded to leave her Southern California surroundings and follow a "prince charming" airline pilot on a short vacation to Hawaii; leaving behind her dad and a longtime boyfriend. Volcanic eruptions are not the only sparks that flare up when Penny arrives on the island paradise. The author has a wonderful sense of humor, which is laced throughout the story. My favorite character is Penny's dictatorial boss, Tina, six feet of "lace and legs." She is an engaging character, who reminds me of Rhonda Russell from my debut novel, Wrath of Rhonda, an intelligent, domineering woman, who could be a poster child for bipolar disorders. How will Penny's search for happiness in all the wrong places end? Pour yourself something tropical, relax, and read this fine book; you won't be disappointed.

Escape with Penny Himmel to a tropical island where, while on vacation, her life becomes filled with adventure. Penny had been a mischievous (honors) art student who impressed her teachers, but now she works in the art department at the Globe where she has put together an impressive ad campaign. After she's been on her own for a while and working hard to increase her employer's business by 35%, she's looking for a normal vacation and enjoys sipping on a glass of wine. Her personality has a wild side, mixed with a romantic imagination and a sense of needing to be free as well as seeking an exciting life with someone who sweeps her off her feet like prince charming. Adult content: language.

Eve unfolds this adventure in Hawaii very well with a touch of romanticism and simple dialogue. She displays the nature of Penny's desire for satisfying her romantic, yet casual appetite for a much needed vacation.

Is grass greener on the other side? Many times we're all at a point in a life and wonder about the choices we've made. We try to explore the possibilities that maybe we made the wrong choices and perhaps grass is greener on the other side.

In Penniless Hearts, Penny is her father's primary caregiver. She has a wonderful boyfriend who absolutely adores her. But Penny is exhausted and bored out of her mind. She goes off seeking for adventures and wonders that maybe there's something more out there in life.

Unfortunately, Penny learns her lesson the hard way. Everything she needed has always been right in front of her. But she continues to wait for her "prince" to come and sweep her off her feet.

This story was a light, fun read. The author is able to bring different characters together with their own stories. If you're looking for a book that's a good escape, this is a fun read.

Penniless Hearts by Eve Gaal is a fantastic romance full of glorious characters, wonderful humour and adventure. The author really knows how to hook her readers with excellent narrative and dialogue.
Penny is in a love rut. John is boring, her life is boring. Boring! Her fantasy is to drop everything and have an adventure in Hawaii. So that's exactly what she does and has a fling with dashing airline pilot. But Dan is married which complicates Penny's precarious life. Also, John's romantic side kicks in and searches for Penny.
There is so much going for this romantic fantasy full of adventure, yearning, stunning locations so lovingly described, and the man left behind. Will he find his true love and win her back from her fantasy world? Read it and sigh.
FIVE STARS for this fantasy romance and highly recommended.

Penny's bored with her life and relationships. It's time for an adventure so that's when the artist decides to have an innocent fling with a pilot. They head to the Hawaiian islands. Her impulsive move results in a seeming disaster, however, when she loses her money, discovers that her lover is married and gets enmeshed with a group of druggies. There's also the issue of mistaken identity around the goddess Pele. I found the book light hearted and hilarious. If you like a little adventure with a creative twist at the end, this book is for you. Fun read!

A wonderful and imaginative story sure to delight any reader. It is well written with a balance of humor, romance, and the magic of fairy tales. I could picture each character and delighted with their varied personalities...even enjoyed the bad guys and their antics. Thank you, Eve Gaal, for entertaining me on these recently cool and cloudy days in Florida.

I have been to Hawaii 10 times and this made my 11th! The book is so descriptive that you can almost feel the ocean spray and smell all the aromas... Intertwining as Kilaua is exploding in the distance... An unraveling mystery and yet full of romance that will capture your heart and show you levels of helplessness and heroism along with shady and traditional characters that will keep you engaged in all the upcoming action that ensues in the air and on the road... I couldn't put it down it down once I began it and am looking forward to a sequel!

What a fun summer read! Ms. Gaal's book is highly entertaining. I just finished reading the Steve Jobs book and needed to unwind with something light and humorous. I savored the fun element of this wacky romance set in Hawaii. Made me want to pack my flip flops and buy a ticket. As a life coach the coaching the main character Penny gets from another artist near the end of the book touched my heart. Great advice! Great read! Grab it and your sunscreen and head to the nearest beach!

Wonderfully told!

Eve Gaal writes a funny and adventurous tale with Penniless Hearts. This book is part of the Lost Compass Love Book series, and this is volume one. The reader is introduced to Penny, and she is just unhappy in her life, and everyone around her barely notices her until they need something from her. She just drops everything, doesn't tell anyone she's off on a Hawaiian adventure, just that she's on vacation. However, her adventure is not what she expected, but it is a thrilling and humorous journey. In reading it, we also realize how her work situation was and it was no matter that she needed an escape. It seemed like she was the only one in the world that could do a job for someone else. I'm a big fan of this author! Whatever this author writes, I want to read. It's a funny, romantic adventure, and it helps Penny find herself, and discover this is just what she needed, danger and all! An embraceable story. The reader just embarks on a superb journey. I love Penny and can't wait to read the next installment. Penniless Hearts is a definite recommendation by Amy's Bookshelf Reviews. I read this book to give my unbiased and honest review. Amy's Bookshelf Reviews recommends that anyone who reads this book, to also write a review.

Fed up with her humdrum life where she is overworked, taken advantage of, and underappreciated Penny feels like its time for a change, time to reignite the spark she once felt. So when Dan, a handsome charming pilot, woos her she is on his trip to Hawaii before she has time to think. Leaving behind her father and boyfriend in search of the adventure her fantasies and soul cries for. Little does she know she is about to get more than she bargained for and with only a maxed out a credit card to her name things are not looking good.

Penniless Hearts by Eve Gaal is a sweet romance and a journey of action, danger, and self-discovery that pulls the reader into Penny and John's life.  I loved how I felt like I was part of their story, from beautiful descriptions to intense discovery.  Watching the plot unravel to discover exactly how much trouble Penny is in is handled beautifully. What started of as simply being alone and abandoned becomes so much worse, trespassing, crimes, drugs. Penny, even prone to her flights of fancy, had never imagined something like this, and yet it was exactly what she needed to realize who she is and what she really wants.

Convoluted

Essentially a story about an unsatisfied woman who put herself in an unhappy situation but blames her boyfriend for it, so runs of with another man for the adventure of a lifetime. Not exactly appealing when the main character is on the loser end of 'everywoman,' and even worse that pretty much every other character is also highly flawed and unlikable.

Beyond that, the plot skips around like crazy, is extraordinarily convoluted, and filled with inconsistencies. Three page chapters highlight rather than help this issue.

There are many threads in this story. We get numerous, short chapters exploring the point of view of almost all the characters that show up more than five times in this book. While interesting, the story does have a lot of work to tie everything together into a story arc. Also, characters here are easily persuaded and will do almost anything when it comes to being asked to do adventure or to see someone. While this is fun for a "what if" character did this or that, we will need to treat it as a work of fiction that takes place in the real world, but where the characters do not act real. Where anything can happen in Penny's world, and we do not worry about the conviction of the characters.

As a result, I needed to work harder to emotionally identify with the characters. My favourite was Tina, the domineering boss. Her over-the-top personality fitted perfectly the over-the-top themes of this story.

This book also has some humour. Also, it's nice to see a man (John) who is decent, trusting, honest, and extremely patient, so that he'll wait years and be like best friends with the woman he loves. We need more of these men.

The descriptions of Hawaii were interesting too.
