Paul Guimard (3 March 1921 – 2 May 2004) was a French writer known for combining his passion for writing with his love of the sea.
Guimard was born at Saint-Mars-la-Jaille (Loire-Atlantique). He married Benoîte Groult.
Most of Guimard's novels deal about the role of randomness in life (mainly L'Ironie du sort), time, man's understanding of hidden and ironic structures in which he is trapped. His latest work (Le Mauvais temps) describes a major transformation of a character who finally understands in dramatic circumstances the price of life and the importance of personal choice, changing his desperate life for the best.

A lovely charity shop find. Only short so a quick read but equally moving and thought provoking. Glad I picked it up

Absolutely delightful. The story follows 3 main characters: Julien, François and Catherine. Julien is an old man who sells lottery tickets outside the Gare Saint-Lazare. An unlucky guy who spent his best years fighting WWI and lost his young wife to cancer, Julien leads a dull and lonely life. He consoles himself by imagining a bright future for 2 commuters, François and Catherine, who unfortunately arrive by different trains. One day François, who works as an interior decorator for Galeries Lafayette, hires Julien to perform as Santa for the holiday crowds. Unexpectedly, Julien thrives in this part-time job, and loves engaging with people. Meanwhile François gets bored with his girlfriend Irène, and decides to start his life from scratch. Catherine, who is enrolled in a drama school, is handpicked by a mercurial film director who wants her for his next film. Awed by this stroke of luck, Catherine submits to the director's every whim, even when it comes to having a nose job, and sleeps with the producer as well. Her spinelessness gets her nowhere since the director and the producer eventually agree to shoot the film in Kenya with a black actress. Just after New Year's Eve, Julien is back to selling lottery tickets. He gets hit by an ashtray flung from a window by a grumpy child, and dies under the eyes of François. In the milling crowd brought together by Julien's accident, François and Catherine finally meet. Will they connect in the way Julien hoped? It's up to the reader to decide. Guimard's evocative prose does wonders to flesh out these modest characters and his ironical description of the film industry is very funny.

I personally liked this book. I think the writing was beautiful and very well done and the story although some may find it, I don't know too movie-like or even a bit too coincidential, which I think is also the purpose, was one that was simple but adequate and very real to me. Especially after lately I read some popular but just...not touching stories. I mostly loved the part of Catherine and her change when being chosen for the role. François was a bit...bleak to me, but very, how do I say, French. And I did love the setting, I was sad about the ending and of course I was touched by Julien's story which I found very sad, romantic and...just kind. And it really hit me how unseeable he was for the world until his death where the comparison between him leaving the scene was in sync with Catherine no longer being part of the movie. I think he described the sadness very well. I would've liked it if maybe they didn't keep on going in the same direction anyway but at the same time Francois realizing that she is not the girl that Julien saw also suggested a new beginning for both of them. I think the part about the invisibility and loneliness was the best one! I really enjoyed myself and found i very pleasing despite the fact that it wasn't that long!
