CAILIN MAC DOUGAL has lived a dangerous life being the adopted daughter of vampire Broderick “Rick” MacDougal, so she had no choice but to learn to fight in order to protect herself. However, such behavior is hardly desirable in a dutiful wife who’s supposed to embroider and run a household. This aggressive side of her behavior should be easy enough to hide from her betrothed…shouldn’t it?
After being away at fencing school for seven years, JAMES KNIGHTLY has returned as a master swordsman, ready to captain his own ship and finally wed his childhood sweetheart, Cailin MacDougal. What he finds waiting for him is a dagger-toting hellion for a bride, an immortal father-in-law, and an enemy bent on extracting revenge by threatening the family James holds most dear–the MacDougals.
BRODERICK MAC DOUGAL is lured away from his family with the promise of–at last–learning a way to protect those he loves from his clan enemy, Angus Campbell. Broderick knows he’s headed for a trap, but the bait is too tempting to resist…and he unravels the beginning of a prophecy that will lead to redemption for all vampires. The cost of such redemption, though, may be the very soul of the woman he would die for…his wife, Davina.
Reader Advisory: This story contains some explicit love scenes, described using graphic and direct language. This story also contains explicit, nail-biting scenes of violence and sword fights.
I'm a huge fan of fantasy and paranormal books, especially if they have strong romantic elements. Review copies of my novels are available upon request.
I loved book two of this series also. This is another great starting series. There is an ancient feud, prophecy, fighting, love, heck you get a bit of everything. Another highly recommend first two books in this series. Now I'm onto book three :)
Author Arial Burnz takes us back to the 16th century in Midnight Captive, the second book in the Bonded by Blood Vampire Chronicles. Do NOT get comfortable, this is another edge-of-your-seat read where the darkness oozes with danger and the mist hides a prophecy waiting to be fulfilled. Several years have passed since the events of book 1, Midnight Conquest, Cailin has grown up and is promised to her best friend and sweetheart, James. But the shroud of danger has repeatedly reared its ugly head as Angus continues to attempt to shred Broderick’s heart by hurting the ones he love and protects. Well-versed in the art of war and combat, young Cailin is a warrior at heart, but is that what James expects in a wife? Their love story is a sweet oasis in the turmoil around them.
Meanwhile, Broderick must go on a quest to find the meaning of a prophecy that he and Davina are part of. Will he find what he is searching for or will he come home to find his enemy has attacked in his absence?
Once again, Arial Burnz shows her talent in spades! It is not easy to transition through time and keep a story on track, but she has done a superb job of doing just that through the thoughts and emotions swirling through her words. The passage of time almost feels like a mist that hides the missing years, clearing when she is ready to continue her tale. As always, her characters are incredibly real, unafraid to show joy, love and loyalty, no matter what. Ms. Burns has even remembered to present the downfalls of an immortal loving a human through the years as one ages when the other does not, yet Broderick and Davina’s love is as fresh as that very first day they met. Definitely sighworthy!
Series: Bonded By Blood Vampire Chronicles - Book 2 Publication Date: November 18, 2013 Publisher: Mystical Press ISBN: 1482796104 Genre: Adult Paranormal Romance/Historical Print Length: 343 pages Available from: Amazon | Barnes & Noble
Oh Arial, you did again! Love this second book in your historical vampire series!! Great ending that teases and entices me to watch avidly for the next book. I can't wait for the reunion of Broderick and Davina. They are by far the most intriguing couple and pivotal pair in this wonderful series. However, this sweet, love story between James and Cailin added another layer to the journey of the MacDougals. A touching story of love, honor, loyalty, and sacrifice. Keep it up Ms. Arial!
This action packed book two is amazing! Following the lives of Davina, Broderick, and now James as well as Caitlin, every page is beautifully written with mysteries unfolding constantly. I was easily caught up in this book and very pleased. The conclusion was perfect with just enough disclosed to ensure my continued devotion onto book three. This book makes it easy to recommend reading it. My voluntary review is based against a copy that was given to me.
This book has a lot going for it. The setting of medieval Scotland feels authentic, and the vampire mythology, while familiar, has enough subtle differences to keep it from becoming old hat.
I love this series...impatiently waiting for book three!! Arial is an exciting new author with an highly innovative twist to the usual vampire writing themes!!! Can't wait for more!!! I'm a lifelong fan for sure!!! More "Brodrick", please... and I have it on personal authority you best pronounce his name with a long "o" and a Scottish brogue!...whoa! kj :)
I received this book in exchange for an honest review (LoP or Lovers of Paranormal). This book tells us the story of a strong woman. We learn more about the story with the new interesting twist that has. This is a very interesting read that keeps you enthralled. The book has a great flow. The characters are amazing. Overall I really enjoy reading this book.
Midnight Captive is the second book to the Bonded by Blood Vampire Chronicles. If you did not read the first book, Midnight Conquest, then you are about to read some spoilers. You have been warned!
The story takes place about seventeen years after the first book. Cailin is now woman and ready to become engaged to her childhood sweetheart, James Knightly. MacDougal and Knightly own a business together. When James father disappears, Broderick takes over his fatherly role to James. James is sent off to Germany to learn fencing before taking up the family business. Cailin, in the meantime, learns how to fight rather than learn domestic duties. She learns how to fight because Angus Campbell is still at large and trying to hurt Broderick through the people he loves. Will he succeed this time?
The story is written in third person mostly following Cailin, James, and Broderick. Broderick is determined to protect his family. Despite his better judgment, he goes off to find a way to help protect his family, leaving his future son-in-law in his place. Broderick learns a key figure in a prophecy is him, but his actions could undo the prophecy and those he loves. Cailin grew up with the knowledge of her adopted father as a vampire and the dangers of Angus around every corner. In fact, Angus was almost successful at abducting and killing her family as a girl. She, therefore, goes against her gender role and learns to fight. And not just fight, but how to fight a vampire. James does not know what Broderick is at the beginning of the story. Despite what the MacDoughals are, he is in love with Cailin and is willing to do anything to protect – which is tested in this book. In this story, we learn more about the prophecy that was mentioned at the end of the first book. Other characters from the prior book make their appearance or are mentioned. There are, however, a few new characters – good and bad.
I liked the story to this book better than the first. It seemed like there were more action/danger going on. Although shorter, the second book moves along well and leaves off for the next book in the series while finishing the current story. I was a little turned off by James when we first see him, but eventually that wore off. The prophecy and other teachings that Malloren spoke of kept my interest. I would hope to see more of that in the following books.
Overall, I enjoyed the book. If you like historical fiction/vampire novels, then you might want to try this book – after reading the first, Midnight Conquest.
Bonded by Blood is a paranormal romance series that takes place in Scotland circa 1500. The characters are some hot, blood-lust vampires your imagination will ever meet. The author drifts you into a daze of darkness that goes beyond the typical in vampire stories: bloodsucking, bat morphing, daylight sleeping, cross and garlic fearing. No. The Vamsyrians are different and they eat people. They are picky eaters too. Their immortality depends on it.
Broderick “Rick” MacDougal learns this after exchanging blood with a temptress named Cordelia who turns him into a blood slave to fulfill some mysterious intentions. The mixing of blood complicates things for Rick, and I find myself sympathizing with him because of his desire to become a vampire.
Bonded by Blood unfolds like the hit T.V. show Scandal, but with vampires. You don’t know whose maniacal plan will be to your good or detriment. Veronique is a perfect example. She’s relentless in her pursuit to eliminate the heroine, Davina. Angus Campbell is another good example. He’s Rick’s nemesis and brother, and he shouldn’t be trusted with a ten-foot-pole between them.
Never thought I’d become so invested in a vampire story, but the author does an awesome job of character development. She helps you to connect with her protagonist by giving you an indication of what he’s feeling and thinking. She also lets the reader know as soon as possible what he wants. Rick’s goal is what holds the story together.
The author introduces the kind of mystery that keeps me on the edge of my seat. I love that Rick reacts. In every scene he’s revealed as visceral, emotional, physical and intellectual.
If you’re a binge reader like me, you want to get swept up in a powerfully crafted romance novel. I highly recommend Bonded by Blood Chronicles series because it will knock your socks off!
In Midnight Captive we catch up with Cailin Mac Dougal, as a young lady. In Midnight Conquest, she was just a babe. She has led a dangerous life with her adopted father being Broderick Mac Dougal. She has had to learn how to defend herself against any form of attacker, and that is not something that most men want or look for in a wife! James Knightly has been away for seven years returning as a master swordsman, when he returns the young lady he left behind is not who she was when he left. When Broderick is called away from his family to finally learn how he can protect his family from his clan enemy, Angus. He has to trust that his wife Davina, daughter Cailin and soon to be son-in law can keep themselves all safe while he is away. There are so many stories in this one book and all of them are great. At no time was I ever confused about what was happening to whom. In the end can Broderick keep his family safe? Will James still want to marry Cailin when he sees that she is highly trained herself? And can Cailin make herself believe that a man like James would want a woman like her? You will have to read the book to find that out! And now, for book 3!
I was given a complimentary copy for an honest review by author Ariel Burnz. This is book 2 of the Bonded by Blood Vampire Chronicles by the author.
Cailin MacDougal has grown up into a beautiful and talented woman. Learned to defend herself and fight by Broderick to keep her safe against Angus Campbell if the need arises. James Knightly grew up under the MacDougal roof and has returned from his schooling to be captain of a ship and to be with Cailin. Events cause Broderick to be away from home and Cailin is taken but James proves his love for her and her family. Angus makes another attempt at revenge but is thrown off guard by what Broderick learned when he was away.
OMG this is a fantastic book. The characters are great and the interaction between everyone just grabs hold of you and wont let you go.The author created a very smooth flowing story line in this book of the series and I can't wait to read the next book.
This is for mature paranormal romance book lover who enjoy something meatier in their stories. This is book 2 and starts where book 1 leaves off so it is best to read the books in order.
Occuring 17 years after the first book of the Bonded by Blood series, Midnight Captive comes in when Cailin has grown into womanhood and her betrothed James returns from training to claim her. We find out that Angus has plagued the family in this time period and because of this Cailin is a great fighter because of the training that she received because of this. Broderick must leave his family to learn more about the prophecy that is brought up in book one and leaves his family in the care of James. Angus' associates take Calin and Broderick learns some neat tricks from the prophetess.
I thoroughly enjoyed this installment of the series and can't wait to read the next one!! Arial transitions us through time as if the time has never passed and explains what has happened in that time span so that we are caught up and aren't lost as to what is going on. I fully recommend this series to anyone who enjoys a good romance mixed with action and adventure. I know I read fast but I couldn't resist reading this book from cover to cover in a day... now to go and read the next installment to find out what happens next!!
In 1531 Cailin is an adult and is betrothed to James. Cailin has been trained by her father, Broderick, in protecting herself. James has been to Germany to a fencing school and has came to claim Cailin. While they are having a celebration, Cailin and her handmaid Maggie are kidnapped. But Cailin knew it was going to happen and has a medallion to protect her from Angus. Her father is off on a mission to talk to a prophetess to find out how to keep them all safe. James goes to rescue Cailin and they fight Agnus, the Vamsyrian, who had her kidnapped to get back at Broderick. Great story. The only thing that confused me was when Broderick visits the prophetess. It was sort of confusing. Also, it talked about Davina and Cailin being kidnapped when Cailin was ten years old but it doesn't go into much detail. I loved Cailin and James, they are a perfect match for each other. Davina is still as strong as ever. Cailin's handmaid, Maggie, is hilarious. *RECEIVED A COPY FROM AUTHOR FOR HONEST REVIEW*
Cailin, Davina's Daughter and Brodericks adopted daughter is grown and promised to James Knightly. James has been away for years at fencing school learning to fight. While he was away Cailin was being taught to defend herself by her stepfather Broderick. Broderick loves Cailin as his own and hasn't even realized she has grown to womanhood, he is very protective of her. Broderick receives an amulet from the gypsies with a message he is to go to stonehenge. He goes alone because of the unknown. While away, James dad and Angus's henchman Jasper snatches Cailin, leaving James to go after them. I love the story, Arial does very good at weaving the story and balancing it all out. I am looking forward to reading the next book in the series.
First off Thank you Arial Burnz for the book and that I was given this book in exchange for honest review By (LoP or Lovers of Paranormal)
This is the second book in the series.. I am really loving this series!
Not only does it have amazing characters, but it awesome plot! Mrs Burnz gives you a story full of twist turns and up and downs and lots of love and of course revenge! This book follows Cailin and James. Cailin is grown now and has been taught to hold her on! James has comes back after being away at fencing school! And of course this is when all hell has breaks loose This book is full of action and danger! But most of all Broderick is hell bend on protecting his family and Angus is hell bent on his revenge!
Midnight Captive (Bonded by Blood Vampire Chronicles, #2)
WOW!!! And the story just keep getting better**** Cailin, daughter of Davina and stepdaughter of Broderick, is grown and promised to James Knightly. James has been away for years at fencing school learning to fight why he is away, Cailin was taught to defend herself by her stepfather. Broderick get a message from the Gypsies to go to Stonehenge. That's when the Mystery starts and you don't know who to trust. Once again Arial takes all of the different mix and bring together a beautiful storyline.
The dreamer and the reading room agreed that this was a soaring 4.9 stars
I was given this book in exchanged for my honest review. Goodreads.com LoP
I was given this book in exchange for an honest review (Lovers of Paranormal).
Midnight Captive plays 17 years after Midnight Conquest. Actually this was quite shocking for me. Cailin got so big already! However I really liked her and her betrothed James. (I would have liked to get to know more about their childhood though!)
In my opinion this story was a lot like the first one. Someone gets abducted by Angus and so on. (Apparantly he never learns.) I have to admit though, that I liked this book a lot more than the first. There were a lot more action and I loved how the characters interacted with each other.
Regarding the prophecy, we didn't get a lot information again. I just wonder how will this end? Probably nothing will be revealed before the end :(.
I cannot say I liked this book because I absolutely LOVED IT! There was not one thing that I wished was different or wasn't thrilled beyond belief at. Cailin and James have a love story that comes off very real even though their circomstances are far from realistic. In fact, every step of the way the characters face inward struggles that we all deal with. And... if that weren't enough to make a great story, there is the prophecy that is being fulfilled and of course my beloved BRODERICK.
I received this book from the author in exchange for an honest review.
Book 2 begins several years after book 1. Cailin is now grown and is betrothed to James Knightly. Angus is still chasing the family. We meet Malloren Rune who is a prophetess for the Army of Light and is working to ensure that the prophecy is fulfilled.
Book 2 was very action packed. I love the interactions between Cailin and James. She is very independent and has learned a lot from Broderick. Ms. Burnz loves to throw in a good twist here and there to keep the reader begging for more! This is series is wonderful and a must read for those who love vampires and paranormal romance.
I am usually not a fan of the historical type reads, of any kind really. However Burnz writes so beautifully that the time and place really have not hold over my opinion. I really enjoyed this read. This is the second book in the series and I recommend reading the first before you read this one. I loved James and Cailin's love story. They find their way even through all the angst and turmoil surrounding them. I was happy to see and learn more about Broderick and Davina's love and what might lay ahead for them.
Another great read by Arial with an exciting plot and interesting characters. The story kept me hooked throughout, and I can't wait to read more by this author. I loved reading about the building relationship between James and Caitlin, especially the banter :) The trials and tests, as well as the romance will keep you glued on their journey until the last page
Oh my goodness what a book! And I thought Midnight Hunt was awesome! I am reading this series backwards but Arial Burnz has done such a great job building her characters, till you absolutely have to turn the next page to see what comes next!!! The exciting plot with the twists and turns, fulfilling prophecy, revenge all make for such a fabulous read. Can't wait for the next one.
Vamsyrians, A Prophecy and True love This is a wonderful self-contained story that’s also part of a series. You have a feud between two Vamsyrians that has caused one of them to do all he can to protect his family. The love he has for his wife and daughter. And a betrothed for such daughter that will also protect her with his life and love. Well written and very enjoyable to read.
Unfortunately, I started on book two and was a little lost at times, but still found the story really entertaining. The question is, do I read book one or three next? While there was a warning at the beginning of the book warning the reader of erotic content, I found this book delightfully mild! I've read several teen vampire romance books which were more graphic. Good job Arial.
While this one was better there were times I wanted to slap Cailin. And the prophesy is driving me mad as well. Both signs of a good writer in my opinion. Got a peek at book 3 and omg! Think I'm going to need a box of Kleenex when I read it. *sniffs*
Read as part of a paranormal collection without reading book one. Well written. Probably won't read the rest since I prefer contemporary urban fiction.
I really enjoyed this story. I love how Cailin grew and I'm still in love with Broderick. If you haven't read this series yet, you should really give it a try.
