Vincent Dobs Marché thought he scented his beloved—his fated one-and-only—at a shifter enforcer challenge months ago. Since rogue shifters killed his mother, bonding with one is the last thing he wants to do. He runs from the knowledge, vowing to live his life alone. Fate has other plans. Slowly, blood from human donors becomes unpalatable to him, until it’s easier to go hungry than deal with the taste. When he hits the verge of collapse, his friends step in, forcing him to return to Stone Ridge and give the shifter a chance.
When Dobs meets his beloved, Franklin Drunger for the first time, the big, sexy, wolf shifter’s blood calls to him. Frankie seems just fine with the idea of Dobs drinking from him, so he gives in to his desire and bites the man. Reb, Frankie’s protective older brother, isn’t nearly as open-minded and attacks Dobs. Acting on instinct, Frankie defends his mate, shifting to wolf form. Dobs panics at the sight of the wolf and insults his beloved. Angry and hurt, Frankie flees.
Can Dobs learn to accept the gift Fate has given him and convince Frankie to give him another chance? Or is it too late for him to earn the love of the special shifter he’s been given?
This is Frankie's story and I loved it. It was one of the best in the series. I was also happy that it wasn't full of sex like normal. It fit for this storyline. It was awesome.
I LOVED that Frankie got a mate! Though Dobbs/Vince is a jerk at the beginning (ahh for good reason for all of it) he truly does want Frankie. Awesome!
My first reaction after reading this story was 'Wow!'. I am just so floored by the pairing for this story of Dobs and Frankie and just how into the story I was.
When both characters in separate books were secondary characters I was struck by how much I was interested in seeing with whom each would be paired. Not in a million years did I imagine it would be each other. But, oh my, it sure worked for me once I thought about it.
Vincent 'Dobs' Marche', a vampire, has a prejudice against shifters and he almost gets near death before he admits to his friends that fate has chose a shifter for his 'beloved' or 'mate' as the shifters call it. Naturally, as friends do, they give him a verbal boot up the butt and drag him back to Stone Ridge to figure out which of the wolves from several months ago at a shifter meeting he attended was the one who smelled like his beloved.
Frankie, a wolf shifter, is no ordinary individual. He experienced a head injury as a small child that left him a little slow and one who struggles to reason complicated things out, but he has a heart of gold and is eager to embrace the idea that his mate has been found.
Unfortunately, between Dobs reaction to shifters and Frankie's need to shift and protect Dobs the first chance they meet, things don't get off on the right foot. Dobs freaks at the sight of Frankie's wolf and Frankie is cut deeply when Dobs calls him an animal.
The two have their work cut out for them to make their mating work, but they may not get their chances because Dobs' long time enemies are closing in while he is distracted.
I really enjoyed this latest installment in the series between the relationship conflict and the plot line involving Dob's enemies. It was one of the best stories in the series IMHO. Can't wait for who gets their story next.
3.75* I have been looking forward to Frankie's story ever since we meet him in his brother Reb's book. Frankie is a huge kick-ass wolf, a great tracker and a very fast shifter, so good that he teaches the cubs how to shift faster. Frankie also is a bit slower due to an accident when he was very young. He has a heart of gold, but he needs to take his time and think things through to make sure he understands everything. He is open, honest and sweet. His mate is Vince aka Dobs a vampire who is not a fan of shifters, he dislikes them, so much so that when he first scented his mate 8 months before, he left and didn't even try and find the shifter that was his beloved. Now his health has forced ( well and his nosy and slightly annoying friends) to come to Stone Ridge and find him. Frankie, being Frankie has no issues with his mate being a vamp and is ready to go all out and get bonded, but Vince being a bit of a bigoted asshat makes it harder on them and causes some delay, and.....enter the baddie, some torture and a mad as hell wolf and all is well in Stone Ridge.
Cool they acknowledge that a long time in a coma can cause brain damage.
Too much boring sex.
Decent peril for a book this short, angst, melodrama, people running away from problem last rather than just talking--all the tropes I love.
But the story was bland. I also felt like I missed something. I know her series are usually set in the same world and overlap so I'm thinking maybe there was some vampire book with Mickail I missed. It was confusing and set back my enjoyment.
I wanted the issue of Frankie's disability addressed. It just wasn't a big deal to anyone and that doesn't make sense to me. I kep thinking of Brier's Bargain and his different that was. But Brier is a lot worse off than Frankie.
These books are just too short to be what I want them to be.
Curto e gostosinho de ler, direto ao ponto. Gostei dos personagens e achei que a autora conseguiu contar uma história boa e concisa, fiquei querendo mais umas 20 páginas deles juntos no fim porém tudo bem.
I once picked up a random book from the Stone Ridge universe, and I liked it. Now I’m going through the whole universe and completing the whole list on the author's website.
(trope spoilers below)
There is a lot of insta-love and soulmate/beloved stuff and I love it. In the background there is a continuous bigger plot and the series are all interconnected. Some books I like more than others, but in general it’s a great adventure, and I do not regret starting all those books at all.
If you'd like to read about more books I liked, check out my Goodreads profile. I also sometimes post reviews on Instagram and talk about bookish stuff on Threads.
When Caspian was sent to Stone Ridge by the Vampire Council to investigate the stories of the evil Scientists kidnapping, experimenting, and killing shifters in WSR #9, he brought with him his best friends of many decades & fellow Vampires: Sebastian, Lexington, and Dobs (Vince). During this first visit to Stone Ridge Caspian met his mate, Casey a Rabbit shifter. Also a Wolf Enforcers Challenge was held during which several Wolves competed for two Enforcer positions. Among them was Frankie Drunger, who was bigger and stronger than his older brother, Reb the local Stone Ridge tattoo & piercing artist. But because of a TBI Traumatic Brain Injury suffered in a car accident that killed his parents when he was two years old, Frankie has since been a bit slow. Eventually understanding things once broken down and explained to him.
Yet despite his very big Wolf - three hundred pounds, Frankie isn't dominant. He's more of a lover than a fighter. He gentle nature and enjoyment of life makes him a very special Wolf indeed. He's more inclined to go with his feelings first, then think later or better yet seek out the one person who has never let him down for advice, his brother. Frankie trains teenagers to shift more quickly, as well as smoothly. He has a really close relationship with his brother, but when Reb found his mate in Ireland, it caused a deep longing in Frankie. Would he ever find his mate? Did Fate even have a mate set aside for someone like him...a special Wolf? He wanted what he saw all the other couples experiencing. What he saw with his brother and Daithi.
What no one in Stone Ridge ever expected was that gentle sweet Frankie's mate would turn out to be a Shifter Hating Vampire who would rather starve himself to death than acknowledge that his mate was a Shifter. While it may be lust at first sight -- everything after that is just plain hard work. In this story Caspian, Casey, and his three friends return to Stone Ridge to try to find a Shifter / Wolf that could save their stupid, prejudiced slowly dying friend's life, even if it kills him.
This was a very enjoyable story. I had been looking forward to read Frankie's story. I just never imagined it would be so exciting. It was full of all sorts of emotions, actions, anger, fear, disgust, impatience, sadness, trepidation, excitement, anticipation, happiness, resignation, revenge, butting in someone else's business, counseling, sadism, torture, friendship, life restoring blood, being energized, feeling stupid, running away from bad news, facing one's fears, and making life altering decisions.
I will most definitely be reading this story again!

I loved this book. It was romantic, it was exciting, it was full of drama. It had it all. I just needed to gush a little. It takes a lot to really move me emotionally and I felt that this book did that for me.
I loved that the vampires in this series of books call their mate beloved. I just think that is so romantic. Dobs went right up to Frankie and said “hello beloved”, my heart just melted right there. I want my own vampire now.
I loved the primary characters Dobs and Frankie and I loved Dob’s friends as well as Frankie’s brother.
Dob is a very complex character. We never really see all that there is to him, and that to me makes him even more appealing. This man is caring, sensitive, sexual, sexy, sensual. He is also dangerous, lethal, and lest we forget a vampire. He’s all of this and so much more. He changes in so many good ways throughout this book. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a character change so much throughout a book before. It was believable, and I think that Dobs became a better man for it.
Frankie is another complex character who also changed for the better throughout this book. Frankie is loyal, caring, sensitive, sexual. He was an emotionally vulnerable man that needed someone to see him as more then childlike and he got that from Dobs.
Dob’s closest friends help him to meet his beloved and are supportive of him throughout this whole book. His friends are likable and while they have minor roles throughout this book, they are still important and have a strong impact on the primary characters.
Frankie’s brother Reb is also another minor character in this book, but he helps Frankie work things out in his head about important decisions that Frankie needs to make. He has been Frankie’s rock for most of his life and has taken care of him for a long time. The relationship that they have is important and special just like Dob’s friendship with his friends. It’s nice to see a glimpse into each of their private lives and how this will play out in their new life together.
Wow! The Vampire’s Special Lover by Charlie Richards immediately captured my attention. From the first page, I was totally enthralled with these two heroes as well as the story they had to tell.
Like many other books in this series, I thought the two men really connected well with each other. What made this different for me was the way Dobs and Frankie truly work to understand each other. They are very different characters and come from very different backgrounds. Dobs hates shifters, *read it and find out why* so he truly has personal demons he must overcome if he wants to have something special with Frankie. On the other hand, Frankie must learn not to run away when he doesn’t understand something. He has to also learn to be patient as well as truly listen to what Dobs tells him without jumping to conclusions. Let me tell you that I really adored these two men and loved the relationship they start to develop with each other. Ms. Richard’s truly took her time with these two and allowed them to really get to know each other and fall in love.
The Vampire’s Special Lover is probably my favorite book in the series. I enjoyed every minute I spent reading this book and I truly hated to see it come to an end. These two men captured this reader’s heart and I hope Ms. Richard’s will revisit them again sometime in the future. Highly Recommended!
The Vampire’s Special Lover is the 16th book in the Wolves of Stone Ridge series. Although it could easily be read alone, I highly recommend reading these books in series order. You’ll fall in love with the characters and each hero really brings something special to the series.
The Wolves of Stone Ridge books in series order are:
Werewolf at the Zoo Alpha’s Prerogative Accepting his Animal Accepting his Human Finding Balance Goading the Enforcer Through Dagus’s Eyes Loving the Enemy Casey’s Love Bite The Wolf Biker’s Mate Kyle’s Valiant Hunt A Cajun in Colorado Catching a bit of Irish Gustav’s Gargoyle Adventure Choosing his Christmas Miracle The Vampire’s Special Lover
Hurts from the past can bury your future in darkness. That is a lesson Vincent Dobs Marché will have to learn the hard way. You don’t have to forgive and forget but you can’t also paint everyone with the same brush. As a Vampire, Vincent has lived a long time. As years moves on the world has become a different place, every paranormal sector has their own rules and ways; meshing the two is not easy. Definitely not in his bucket list, yet funny thing about Fate she can be quirky and unexpected. After meeting Franklin Drunger, his scent alone makes him want to drop fangs. Can he push away from his fear and hatred of Wolf shifters to push forward with Frankie at his side?
Frankie has no issues with the sexy Vamp at first sight and scent he welcomes Vincent wholeheartedly. He knows that he is strong and brave but he also knows that he is slower than others to grasp meanings and understand situations. Will Vincent accept him anyway; even with an unfortunate, incurable handicap from a childhood injury. Fate would not give him a mate that would deny him would she? The heat between these two men is combustible even though the hurdles are high. Can Vincent find the courage to build new and stronger memories to finally put behind the bad ones; before he loses the only man made perfectly for him? Frankie needs to calm his older protective brother, who is more like a father. At the same time find a way to save Vincent from himself. Frankie may be slow on the uptake but even he know when Fate writes a “Happily Ever After” not even Vincent will be able to rain on his fairytale end. Frankie may be slow but Vincent just may be slower than him.
This is one of my favorite books in all the series! Frankie is Reb’s brother and he’s got a brain injury that results in him thinking a little slower than he did previously. As a result he’s very forthright and easily distracted.
Dobs is a vampire who hates shifters because they destroyed his family and when he learned his fated mate was one, he ignored the pull – to disastrous effect. What’s great about this is that he and his friends realize that he needs professional help to get over his issues and he starts with Dr Digby, a psychiatrist – instead of some “magical” cure that happens without any logical explanation.
Frankie, as a character, is so open and cute and sweet – he’s just perfect for the cynical Dobs. I love how jealous Dobs gets of the natural shifter nakedness and how Frankie and he can’t go two minutes without falling on each other!
This was a really sweet story with a little angst and lots of feels.
There is a sweet and short follow up story with Frankie’s birthday that’s adorable too!
Comparatively this was one of the better ones in the series. I liked it.
Sure, Dobs was a jerk for a long while but that’s part of the premise, after all. I guess I tend to have a soft spot for character’s who’re a bit “slow”. Of course, this could have been better and in the end the relationship was only getting started; then again this is typical of these series, wherein people meet and mate/bond fast and then have to start falling in love. Kind of throws an obstacle into my path since it’s the actual romance I tend to enjoy most, but eh. Used to it.
So, yes. Nice book. I liked it, liked it actually quite a bit for the longest time while I was reading. Now that I am done my enthusiasm went down to normal levels, but that’s fine too. I suppose I just wasn’t a huge fan of the in the end. *shrug* Been done so many times and it really added nothing to the story for me, even if it illustrated a plot point.
YEA! Frankie gets a mate :) I really thought Frankie was so sweet when we were introduced to him in Reb's story. He's so innocent and trusting and vulnerable. Dobs is a vamp in a really terrible state when his friends FORCE him to go find Frankie. And of course he botches it a bit. He's had such a bad time and is afraid because of what happened in this past with his parents and rogue shifters that he doesn't know if he can make it work - but Frankie calls to him. After he screws up he's at least willing to try to make it work - whatever that means. He really does want to take care of Frankie and he will do whatever it takes to protect him.
I always like seeing Jared in ANY story - in fact I'd be happy with a lot of Jared in every story in this series :) It's good to see some of the rest of the pack as well. On to Demitri's story.
January 2015 This one isn't easy to rate. I liked reading it and seeing how the relationship between Frankie and Vince developed, but again I think it would have worked better, at least for me, if it were a bit longer and more fleshed out. Although I liked, what Vince was willing to do in order to change for Frankie and to make it all work...his change of mind felt too rushed.
When again this novella has one of the sweetest and most romantic scenes I've ever read... OMG..so adorable.
This series has become one of my guilty-pleasures. Even though I struggle with the word count from time to time, the world-building and great characters almost make up for it. Almost. ;)
Not exactly what I expected. That being said, it's not bad. It's just not that good either. Both characters were okay but never more than that. I didn't connect with either of them so I wasn't really invested in their relationship. The world-building was not the best and, maybe because it's book number 16 and I haven't been a regular reader, I couldn't really follow the other characters, their stories and all the other things happening around them. So, while it was entertaining, it just wasn't enjoyable enough to be memorable. In fact it appears I've read other books of this series and I don't honestly remember a single story.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
I was intrigued by the synopsis but unfortunately the story itself was flat, typical and boring. For such a short story there are a lot of people around. And you really don't need that many characters because there are no War-and-Peace-alike battles to use them all. So all those characters just cluster the story. Main characters have sexual experiences with other people in the same room. People walk in on MCs when they have sex (no one knocks anymore). Naked ass is the main attraction. People act weird and illogical. Bottom line: promising idea for the plot but poor execution.
I was hoping she'd do Frankie's story! Of course I was upset that he was hurt by his mate though. I really liked the explanation of Dobs's fear. It seemed real and palpable. My only qualm was his sudden acceptance and change in attitude. It was just too fast. I think they needed a few more incidents of misunderstanding to show growth. Overall it was a fun and satisfying read. It solved my curiosity about Frankie and whatever became of him.
I love Frankie! He's adorable. I'm so glad they both decided to work out their differences, especially Vince(Dobs). Hmmmm.... Vince only had 3 months vacation time. I wonder what happens after that?! Will he go back to his job? Will he take Frankie with him??
This is one of the best in the series. Looking forward to the next one.
Much like Stormy Glenn, Charlie Richards infuses her stories with just enough intrigue and endearing romance to make it possible for to me overlook bad writing. Not great, but a pleasant way to pass the time if you're in the mood for some sappy m/m shifter fun. Be warned that Richards sucks at dirty talk. The sex scenes can be a little awkward at times.
I really like reading her books. After reading the book I think about the next 2 or 3 people who will be in future books. This is a good thing because that means there is always another book to read.
First read 12-21-13 Dobs and Frankie. Dobs was a dick plain and simple. I didn't really like him and I am not sure he's the best mate for sweet Frankie. In my eyes, he never really redeemed himself, but maybe that's just me.
3.5 I thought it was an interesting take on finding your mate (or beloved) because Dobs definitely didn't want a shifter as a mate but kudos to him for eventually realizing what he needed to do. And Frankie? I loved him.
