Sankarankutty Kunhiraman Pottekkatt (Malayalam: ശങ്കരന്‍കുട്ടി കുഞ്ഞിരാമന്‍ പൊറ്റെക്കാട്ട്), popularly known as S. K. Pottekkatt, was a famous Malayalam writer from Kerala, South India. He is the author of nearly sixty books which include ten novels, twenty-four collections of short stories, three anthologies of poems, eighteen travelogues, four plays, a collection of essays and a couple of books based on personal reminiscences. Pottekatt won the Jnanpith Award in 1980 for the novel Oru Desathinte Katha (The Story of a Locale). His works have been translated into English, Italian, Russian, German and Czech, besides all major Indian languages.

S.K യുടെ ശൈലി വായനക്കാരനെ മിനിറ്റുകൾക്കകം ബാലിയിൽ എത്തിക്കും. പിന്നെ തീരുന്നത് വരെ നമ്മൾ ഒരു ബാലിക്കരനായി ആ ലോകത്ത് കഴിഞ്ഞു കൂടും. ആചാരങ്ങളാലും വിശ്വാസങ്ങളാലും ജീവിത ശൈളികളാലും വേറെ തന്നെ ലോകം സൃഷ്ട്ടിച്ച ഇവരെ S.K തെല്ലും വ്യത്യാസമില്ലാതെ തന്റെ വാക്കുകളിലൂടെ ഒപ്പിയെടുത്തിട്ടുണ്ട്.

എന്നും ഓർമ്മയിൽ അലയടിച്ചു വരാറുള്ള ഒരു സുന്ദര സ്വപ്നം പോലെയാണ് ഇനി മുതൽ ബാലി എനിക്ക്.

Its this one I've read the most. I was actually travelling with S.K Pottekat. Landing at Kilimanook, meeting Mr. Tamba of 'Penarengen', The joge dance..I actually saw all those. The visit to chekorde's home was the most memorable one. Sreeyathoon's dance, and their trip to watch the village festival at night., that rainy night,. Pardon, am switching to malayalam, I can't express fully in English at this moment....

Njaan ethra vattam 'Balidweep' vayichu ennenikke nischyamilla. Pooputhan veethiyilude nadakumbol veeramrithyu varichavarude smaranakal irambiyethum.

Well, that was the Bali in the 1950's, the story of pristine and pure Bali, the one we've lost with the onset of uncontrolled tourism. A world wide scenario, with the influx of tourism, the ethnic beauty and heritage of a place gets lost unless its maintained by the authorities.

But through the word of S.K Pottekatt, those days are still alive on our minds, the memoirs of a place we haven't visited, a place 4000 miles away from Kerala, with striking geographical similarities.

ബാക്കി ഉള്ള sk യുടെ യാത്ര വിവരങ്ങൾ വെച്ച നോക്കുമ്പോൾ കുറച്ച മടുപ്പ് ഇടക്ക് തോന്നി പക്ഷെ മികച്ച ഒരു വായന തന്നെ നമ്മുക് സമ്മാനിച്ച് ഈ പുസ്തകവും അതിന്റെതായ വത്യസ്തത പുലർത്തുണ്ട്. പല ഇടങ്ങളിലും കേരളവും ബാലി ദീപും തമ്മിൽ ഉള്ള സാമ്യതയെ ചൂണ്ടി കാണിക്കാൻ sk ശ്രേമിക്കുണ്ട്.

ബാലിദ്വീപിലെ വർണ്ണനകളിൽ നമുക്ക് കേരളത്തിലെ ഒരു ഗ്രാമപ്രദേശത്തെയാണ് കാണാൻ കഴിയുക. ഭൂപ്രകൃതിയും സാംസ്കാരിക സാദൃശ്യങ്ങളും വളരെ കൂടുതലാണ് കേരളവുമായി ബന്ധപ്പെടുത്തി നോക്കുമ്പോൾ. ആചാരങ്ങളും ആരാധനാ രീതികളുമാണ് അല്പം വ്യത്യാസമായി ഉള്ളത്. ചില ബാലി വാക്കുകളുടെ ഉച്ചാരണവും മലയാളവുമായി വളരെയധികം സാമ്യമുണ്ട്. 1953ലാണ് അദ്ദേഹം ബാലി സന്ദർശിച്ചത്. വിദേശ അധിനിവേശത്തെ ബാലി ജനത ചെറുത്തുനിന്ന രീതി വളരെ കരുത്തുറ്റതായിരുന്നു. പുസ്തകം വായിച്ചാൽ ഉറപ്പായും ബാലിയിൽ പോകണമെന്ന് അതിയായ ആഗ്രഹം ജനിക്കുമെന്ന കാര്യത്തിൽ സംശയമില്ല.

എസ്.കെ. പൊറ്റെക്കാട്ടിന്റെ 'ബാലിദ്വീപ്' എന്ന കൃതി ഇന്തോനേഷ്യൻ ദ്വീപായ ബാലിയുടെ പ്രകൃതിഭംഗിയും അവിടുത്തെ സാംസ്‌കാരിക പൈതൃകവും വായനക്കാരിലേക്ക് എത്തിക്കുന്ന അതിമനോഹരമായ ഒരു യാത്രാവിവരണമാണ്. ഭാരതീയ പുരാണങ്ങളോടും ആചാരങ്ങളോടും ബാലിക്കാർക്കുള്ള ഗാഢമായ ബന്ധത്തെ ഗ്രന്ഥകാരൻ തന്റെ നിരീക്ഷണപാടവത്തിലൂടെ ഇതിൽ വരച്ചുകാട്ടുന്നു. പൊറ്റെക്കാട്ട് പുസ്തകത്തിൽ വർണ്ണിച്ച ഉബുദ് കൊട്ടാരം (Ubud Palace), തീർത്തഗംഗ (Tirta Gangga) തുടങ്ങിയ സ്ഥലങ്ങൾ നേരിട്ട് സന്ദർശിച്ചപ്പോൾ വായനയിൽ അനുഭവിച്ച അതേ വിസ്മയം നേരിട്ട് അനുഭവിക്കാൻ സാധിച്ചു. പുസ്തകത്തിലെ ചരിത്രപരമായ വിവരണങ്ങളും ഇന്നത്തെ ബാലിയുടെ മനോഹാരിതയും തമ്മിലുള്ള ബന്ധം ആ യാത്രയെ കൂടുതൽ അർത്ഥവത്താക്കി. ചരിത്രപരമായ വസ്തുതകളും അവിടുത്തെ സാധാരണക്കാരുടെ ജീവിതവും ലളിതവും കാവ്യാത്മകവുമായ ഭാഷയിൽ വിവരിക്കുന്ന ഈ പുസ്തകം, വായനക്കാരെ നേരിട്ട് ആ മണ്ണിലൂടെ യാത്ര ചെയ്യിക്കുന്ന അനുഭൂതിയാണ് പകരുന്നത്.

S.K Pottekkad is the most prominent personality in travel literature in Malayalam and one of the best, if not the best, in India. Balidweep is the travel narration of the journey he made to Bali in 1950's. Bali has a culture which is quite similar to the one we have in Kerala. The author narrated in such a wonderful manner, with minute details, do that the readers feel they themselves made the journey.
