"Goodness and evil reside in the same bed lying side by side in contrast, yet are inseparable because they are and always shall be one and the same."
Sitting atop of the Fairfax Hotel is a gargoyle that some say wields mythical power to grant success, but not without a substantial price. Yet others claim it is simply a stone decoration misinterpreted by man's foolishness and greed for power. Which should we believe?
Success comes at a cost no matter how it is achieved whether through the act of making simple choices or committing murder. It is a dilemma that defines who or what we are. Sam Blythe has reached that moment in his life where he has to make that choice and decide what sacrifices he is willing to live with.
But the sudden changes in Sam’s life has thrust him into his own novel where his characters are taking on the personages of the people that have mysteriously entered his life. Is his own book showing him what he should do or is it something else? Is this new direction of his own choosing or are these thoughts are not his own and he is a pawn in a much bigger game as he faces The Evil from Above.
Tony Ruggiero is best known for his dark fantasy thrillers about vampires being used by the US military. Ground breaking and fast paced, the novels are a characteristic mixture of the vampire lore of Anne Rice and the clandestine secrets of the military found in Tom Clancy novels. The concept led to a series of books released in 2006 through 2010, labeled the Team of Darkness Declassified Files. The books include: Operation Immortal Servitude, Operation Save the Innocent, Operation Face the Fear, and Operation Endgame. A longtime favorite for Tony is the old style of “space opera” type stories which is the center of his two book series: Alien Deception and Alien Revelation. The series deals with an alien organization that has infiltrated the American political system. The series runs the gauntlet from humorous and light hearted to deadly serious as a young man and woman search for answers. His latest release is Coven. Little towns and secrets: a guilty pleasure for some and a harsh reality for others. Witches have secretly been in control of the town council for years and the town has prospered...until now. As they search for the truth behind the mysterious death of one of their shop owners, they uncover disturbing secrets about an ostracized witch and their own coven leader, making it unclear which one may have been using black magic to murder. Tony retired from the United States Navy in 2001 after twenty-three years of service. He and his family currently reside in Portsmouth, Virginia. While continuing to write, Tony teaches at Old Dominion University and Saint Leo University. Visit his website to read sample chapters at www.tonyruggiero.com
Gargoyles! Never really thought about them much before reading this book, but I will certainly keep my eye out from now on. When an idea POPS into your head, do you ever wonder where that idea came from? Sam is a writer suffering from the ever dreaded writer's block until events in his life start resembling the characters' lives in his book. Or was it the other way around? That wouldn't be so bad if these influences were benign, but unfortunately they are malicious and feed on human ambition.
I found this book to be an interesting read. My biggest issue with it was that the intro chapters gave me too MUCH background information. It made the rest of the story drag a bit because I kept waiting for all the 'evil' that was alluded to in the beginning to really get cracking. The last chapters had a nice twist and plenty of action.
Overall, I would recommend this book. For some reason, I wish I would have read it in the autumn/winter months. Just seems like a book best read with a blanket wrapped around you and a cup of hot chocolate. --------------------------------------------------------------------- Received this as a Goodreads giveaway. I really enjoy this author. His stories move quickly and it is refreshing to get through an entire story without the sexual storyline of so many books.
[I got this book for free from a Goodreads First Reads giveaway.]
I am not sure what to say about this book.
I did not dislike it. I did not exactly like it either.
It was...interesting, to be sure. At least, parts of it were. I think the strongest parts of the book were the first quarter and the last quarter. The middle seemed to slow down quite a bit, and a few times I found myself flipping forward in the book because I wasn't involved in the page I was currently on.
It was a bit startling when suddenly the pace changed, moving faster and faster at the end until it suddenly...stopped. I got to the last page of the book...and wondered if I had lost a page somewhere, because everything had built up faster and faster, and I found myself caught up in the action and then...boom, it was done. It was over, I was staring at the back cover of the book, blinking in surprise.
Part of me wants to reread the book (even though I can't possibly spare the time because I have SO many books. xD), and, knowing how the book ends, see if I have a better time following it. Count that as a good sign, that I would reread it if I could?
I received this through Goodreads First Reads. I thoroughly enjoyed this book! Every time I had to put it down, I kept wondering what was going on without me in the story! I thought I knew each characters part in the story, but I was wrong at the end! One of the characters I thought was bad, fooled me! I love it when that happens. It's no fun to read a book and know exactly what is going to happen because the plot is so weak! Great read start to finish!
Great book. I thought I had the mystery in the plot figured out, but Tony was a step ahead each time I thought I knew where it was going. I recommend it to anyone who enjoys mystery and thriller books.
I received this through Goodreads First Reads. This one kept me guessing throughout. Absolutely loved it and look forward to checking out more by this author!
