673 books131 followersThe Belgian author Morris (full name Maurice de Bevere) is best known for his humorous cowboy character, Lucky Luke. Morris started his career in 1945 in Le Moustique, creating various covers and illustrations. By the end of the 1940s, Morris met his colleagues Jijé, Franquin and Will. These four artists would be called "The Gang of 4", because they all worked in Jijé's studio at that time. The first episode of Lucky Luke, 'Arizona 1880', was published in L'Almanach Spirou 1947, and was later continued in Spirou. In his early 'Lucky Luke' comics, Morris was greatly inspired by animated cartoons à la Disney.
In 1949, Jijé took Morris and Franquin to the US, where Morris met Jack Davis and Harvey Kurtzman, whom he helped with their plans for Mad Magazine. He also met René Goscinny in the US. In 1955, Morris returned to Europe and collaborated with René Goscinny on 'Lucky Luke'. Goscinny wrote the scenarios of over 35 stories, which led to the great success of the series.

Familienangelegenheiten
Der wilde Westen war reich an zwielichtigen Persönlichkeiten, die man heute noch immer kennt - von Wyatt Earp über Doc Holliday bis hin zu Billy the Kid, selbst die "Guten" hatten immer so einen Anflug von Gewalttätigkeit. Vielleicht erinnert man sich auch deswegen an sie, eben weil sie interpretationsbedürftig sind. Die Dalton-Bande dagegen, nun, da gibt es nicht viel zu interpretieren: Das waren Bank- und Eisenbahnräuber. Trotzdem kennt zumindest den Namen der Familie in Deutschland und Frankreich jedes Kind. Aber aus anderen Gründen.
Die "Gesetzlosen" dieses Bands, wie ich den französischen Originaltitel übersetzen würde, unterscheiden sich aber von den Daltons, die jeder Lucky-Luke-Leser schätzt, denn es handelt sich hier nicht um Joe, Jack, William und Averell, sondern um deren Cousins, die in der echten Historie der Gesetzlosen der Vereinigten Staaten gegen Ende des 19. Jahrhunderts aktiv waren, also Bob, Grat, Bill und Emmet Dalton. Scheinbar kamen die "echten" Daltons so gut an bei Autor und Publikum, dass Morris zu einem etwas ungewöhnlichen Stilmittel greifen musste, denn, wie jeder Leser dieses Bands und Kenner der amerikanischen Geschichte weiß, konnten die "echten" Daltons leider in späteren Bänden nicht mehr auftreten, nachdem ihr Coffeyville-Raubzug etwas schiefging.
So spielt also Lucky Luke in diesem Band nur eine untergeordnete Rolle, denn die Daltons stehlen im klar die Schau. Trotzdem tolle Unterhaltung, und der erste Band der Reihe, den ich auch Nicht-Fans zur Einstiegslektüre empfehlen würde, denn die Vorgänger waren eher durchwachsen.

Voilà un album qui met en scène de véritables Méchants, avec un grand M car des bandits de ce genre là, on n'en croise pas dans toutes les cases de bédé !
Voilà pourquoi ensuite Morris s'en est voulu de les avoir fait disparaître, respectant pourtant la réalité, se faisant lui même taper sur les doigts d'avoir laissé passer une réelle chance d'avoir des Méchants d'envergure dans ses futurs albums.
Car les Dalton qui se promènent en enchainant méfaits sur méfaits, ce sont les véritables Dalton : Bob, Grat, Bill et Emmett Dalton n'ont rien à voir avec leurs cousins, les autres Dalton (Joe, Jack, William et Averell), ceux qui sont plus bêtes que méchants.
Pourtant, il y a déjà un air de famille avec leurs cousins, ceux qui prendront ensuite une place importante dans les aventures de Lucky Luke : Bob est une teigne colérique comme son cousin Jo et lorsqu'on Emmet rappelle de ne pas oublier de « casser la graine » quand Bob veut s'arrêter pour partager le magot, on croirait entendre Averell !
Les démonstrations de force entre les Dalton et Lucky Luke sont bien mises en page, dans le saloon, où chacun joue à celui qui pisse le plus loin, mais avec ses muscles ou avec son six-coups.
Niveau dialogues, les Dalton utilisent assez bien de mots argotiques lorsqu'ils parlent de leurs révolvers (foreuse, son rigolo,…), de l'argent (touchez pas au carbure), mais les autres personnages ne sont pas en reste, utilisant des mots comme « fric » ou « pétoire ». Ça fait du bien de voir que la censure n'est pas passée par ici !
Enfin, si, elle est passé, je l'ai lu dans le magazine hors-série consacré à Lucky Luke… À l'origine, une balle traversait de part en part la tête de Bob Dalton, on voyait des gouttes de sang couler et former une flaque de sang sous le bandit.
Dans la version corrigée après censure, Morris fit tomber Bob dans un tonneau, Lucky Luke le retourne et s'assied dessus.
La case suivante montrant les tombes des Dalton et laissant penser qu'ils ont fini six pieds sous terre après un procès et une pendaison en bonne et due forme.
Les dessins sont toujours ceux des premiers albums, autrement dit, pas terribles, même s'ils se sont améliorés, par contre, Lucky Luke a toujours un visage très allongé et un gros menton rond, quand à Jolly Jumper, il n'a pas encore de pensées, ni de répliques, ni même de rire.
Quand aux Dalton, ils ont beau avoir existé, ils n'avaient bien entendu pas ces têtes là !
Un album mythique, un album où le scénariste Goscinny n'est pas encore présent, mais on ne peut pas dire que Morris était un manche avec ses scénarios car celui-ci est mené de main de maître, possède quelques gags et, de formidables méchants qui ne feront qu'un seul tour de piste.

Nie mieli oni jednak nigdy wcześniej do czynienia z prawdziwym bohaterem, którym niewątpliwie jest Lucky Luke. Szybki jak błyskawica rewolwerowiec zostaje wynajęty przez pewną kompanię kolejową, aby złapać bandytów. Nie spocznie on, dopóki Daltonowie nie znajdą się za murami więzienia. Zanim jednak to nastąpi, będzie on musiał przemierzyć wiele stanów USA i zmierzyć się z wieloma niebezpieczeństwami.
Lucky Luke tom 6 jest pierwszym albumem w serii, w którym pojawiają się wspomniani już Daltonowie. Wyłączając wygląd (projekty postaci), niewiele jednak mają oni wspólnego z kwartetem, który później dosyć często pojawia się na łamach komiksu. Morris zaprezentował bowiem tutaj naprawdę niebezpiecznych bandytów. Oczywiście ich zachowanie biorąc pod uwagę grupę docelową dzieła, jest odpowiednio „złagodzone”, ale i tak są oni bardzo wyraziści. Pociąga to za sobą dosyć dynamiczny scenariusz, który pochłania się niczym najlepszy filmowy western. Nie można się tutaj doczepić ani do dialogów, postaci drugoplanowych, zwrotów fabularnych czy tempa akcji. Wszystko jest podane w naprawdę dobrej i przyjemnej w odbiorze formie. W przeciwieństwie do późniejszych dzieł artysty, mamy tu jednak do czynienia z mniejszą ilością humoru, przez co historia może wydawać się trochę bardziej poważna. To, czy uznamy to za wadę, czy zaletę to już sprawa bardzo mocno indywidualna...

Spoilers ahead. This was very unexpected.
So based on "The Daltons Cousins" I've already expected some earlier and undefined artwork. Lucky Luke looks even more different, hes somewhat ugly, and quiet brutish, not just in design.
Jolly Jumpers mane is a bit darker, basicly brown.
But different from the second generation of daltons, the OGs where rarely off model, and looked mostly like there later counterparts.
What was even more astounishing is the charakter writing. Lucky Luke has his tricks, sure but hes mostly a no nonsense hero, who is a bit over comfident, and gets actually outsmarted.
The real mastermind here is Bill Dalton, Joes alter ego. He has gun slinger tricks similar to lucky luke, and is a intelligent, and adaptive foe like lucky luke (in his later apperances).
He was a worthy oponent, and you have the impression he could win five of ten times against luke in a battle, or battle of whits. It felt like a role reversal.
Ends a bit quick, and my version had the censored ending.
The side story is fine as well, no complains. Its fun to see Luke impersonating a dalton.

This is where Lucky Luke starts throwing in real life people. No more Pat Pokers and other lazily named shallow bad guys - now it's Dalton Brothers, Jesse James, and the sort. (Well, we do still get the occasional original character, but still...)
The real life Dalton Brothers were never all that, but in this comic they were elevated right into the worst of the lot. Probably because of the comic potential of their synergistic appearances. It works, as you find out. Even beyond death. Kind of.

Dit zesde Lucky Luke-album bevat net als het vorige twee verhalen, waarvan de eerste over de Daltons. In dit verhaal, 'Vogelvrij' zelf ontmoet Lucky Luke de echte Daltons, maar helaas laat Morris dit geweldige in lengte oplopende viertal aan het einde sterven, zodat ze niet meer konden terugkomen. Gelukkig vond René Goscinny daar enkele jaren later wat op...
In het tweede verhaal speelt Lucky Luke zelf voor Dalton om een opscheppende sheriff een lesje te leren. Niks mis mee, maar het haalt het niet bij het eerste verhaal.

Σημαντική η συγκεκριμένη περιπέτεια του Λούκυ Λουκ καθώς ερχόμαστε για πρώτη φορά σε γνωριμία με τους Ντάλτον. Όχι όμως με τους 4 γνωστούς μας, αλλά με τα ξαδέρφια τους. Σε αυτήν την ιστορία μαθαίνουμε ότι οι Ντάλτον ήταν μια άγρια συμμορία και δεν είχε καμία σχέση με τους 4 χαζούς αντιπάλους του Λουκυ Λουκ. Αργότερα ο Μορίς θα εμπνευστεί τα ξαδέρφια των Ντάλτον και θα τους καθιερώσει ως τους μόνιμους αντιπάλους του ήρωά μας. Συλλεκτική ιστορία, στην ουσία πρόκειται για ένα κλασικό γουέστερν.

J'ai beaucoup aimer, j'aime l'humour dans Lucky luke, celui ci s'inspire en plus d'une histoire vrais et retrace la vie des frère Daltons. Bien sur le tout est traité avec humour et le tout se veut humoristique, mais ca reste une tres bonne histoire.

Kaikki tärkeät asiat pyyhkiytyvät kun kovalevy iän myötä täyttyy. En muistanut edes sitä, että Daltonit kuolivat heti ensiesiintymisessään Lucky Lukessa.

I have to confess that I’d not realised that the Daltons were based upon a real-life gang until I read this (although they weren’t all brothers) and that their depiction here, and the story’s outcome, resulted in the creation of a second gang of Daltons - their equally despicable cousins. But that’s what I’ve always enjoyed about Lucky Luke, in that it often blends real life events and people into the stories so offering a way in to discover more about the period.
Originally from 1954, this is a very early Lucky Luke tale (actually it’s two) but it’s still fresh and funny, although the second story does feature Luke teaching someone a lesson by making them think they’re about to be hanged which I very much doubt would make it past an editor or publisher today. It is, after all, playful, just a little out of step with modern sensibilities.
As for the main Dalton tale, we get to find out just what all the fuss was about. It’s clear to see why they’ve become such a popular staple of the Lucky Luke books, even though this is in fact a different group of four. They don’t bicker in quite the same way, and all are pretty much indistinguishable character-wise, but the brilliantly conceived height gag works a treat from the word go.
They’re a relentless band of crooks robbing every bank in sight, but once Lucky Luke is on their trail the outcome is inevitable - they’re going to have met their match, so even a dash to Kansas where they think they’ll be unknown proves fruitless. Incidentally, there’s a lovely gag played out about some nifty plastic surgery that had me grinning.
I’m glad that Cinebook aren’t neglecting these earlier stories and it makes complete sense to stagger them amongst the more contemporary and the classic Goscinny and Morris run. I’m also pleased to see that are still many Lucky Lukes to come.

Première apparition des Dalton dans l'oeuvre de Morris. Il s'agit ici des truands historiques, tués dans une attaque de banque à Coffeyville.
Pas d'entorse à l'histoire donc, les quatre bandits étant abattus, pas tous par Lucky Luke cependant. Une aventures riches en rebondissements et très réussie.
