Alexandre Dumas père, born Alexandre Dumas Davy de la Pailleterie, was a towering figure of 19th-century French literature whose historical novels and adventure tales earned global renown. Best known for The Three Musketeers, The Count of Monte Cristo, and other swashbuckling epics, Dumas crafted stories filled with daring heroes, dramatic twists, and vivid historical backdrops. His works, often serialized and immensely popular with the public, helped shape the modern adventure genre and remain enduring staples of world literature.
Dumas was the son of Thomas-Alexandre Dumas, a celebrated general in Revolutionary France and the highest-ranking man of African descent in a European army at the time. His father’s early death left the family in poverty, but Dumas’s upbringing was nonetheless marked by strong personal ambition and a deep admiration for his father’s achievements. He moved to Paris as a young man and began his literary career writing for the theatre, quickly rising to prominence in the Romantic movement with successful plays like Henri III et sa cour and Antony.
In the 1840s, Dumas turned increasingly toward prose fiction, particularly serialized novels, which reached vast audiences through French newspapers. His collaboration with Auguste Maquet, a skilled plotter and historian, proved fruitful. While Maquet drafted outlines and conducted research, Dumas infused the narratives with flair, dialogue, and color. The result was a string of literary triumphs, including The Three Musketeers and The Count of Monte Cristo, both published in 1844. These novels exemplified Dumas’s flair for suspenseful pacing, memorable characters, and grand themes of justice, loyalty, and revenge.
The D’Artagnan Romances—The Three Musketeers, Twenty Years After, and The Vicomte of Bragelonne—cemented his fame. They follow the adventures of the titular Gascon hero and his comrades Athos, Porthos, and Aramis, blending historical fact and fiction into richly imagined narratives. The Count of Monte Cristo offered a darker, more introspective tale of betrayal and retribution, with intricate plotting and a deeply philosophical core.
Dumas was also active in journalism and theater. He founded the Théâtre Historique in Paris, which staged dramatizations of his own novels. A prolific and energetic writer, he is estimated to have written or co-written over 100,000 pages of fiction, plays, memoirs, travel books, and essays. He also had a strong interest in food and published a massive culinary encyclopedia, Le Grand Dictionnaire de cuisine, filled with recipes, anecdotes, and reflections on gastronomy.
Despite his enormous success, Dumas was frequently plagued by financial troubles. He led a lavish lifestyle, building the ornate Château de Monte-Cristo near Paris, employing large staffs, and supporting many friends and relatives. His generosity and appetite for life often outpaced his income, leading to mounting debts. Still, his creative drive rarely waned.
Dumas’s mixed-race background was a source of both pride and tension in his life. He was outspoken about his heritage and used his platform to address race and injustice. In his novel Georges, he explored issues of colonialism and identity through a Creole protagonist. Though he encountered racism, he refused to be silenced, famously replying to a racial insult by pointing to his ancestry and achievements with dignity and wit.
Later in life, Dumas continued writing and traveling, spending time in Belgium, Italy, and Russia. He supported nationalist causes, particularly Italian unification, and even founded a newspaper to advocate for Giuseppe Garibaldi. Der junge bretonische Adelige Gaston hat sich, aufgrund eines Missverständnisses einer Verschwörung angeschlossen, die den Regenten beseitigen und die Spanier ins Land holen will.
Doch dann verliebt er sich in eine junge Nonne und wird wiedergeliebt. Die vermeintliche Waise, die im Kloster erzogen wird, ist die Tochter des Opfers, Philipp von Orleans. Der konstant libidogesteuerte Sohn von Lieselotte von der Pfalz ist gerade von sämtlichen legitimen Kindern enttäuscht und entdeckt deshalb sein Herz für die im Kloster untergebrachte Tochter zur linken Hand, kann sich ihr aber, aus allerlei Rücksichten, nicht einfach so als Vater offenbaren.
Der Auftakt von allerlei Verwicklungen. Landei Gaston, der erst mal in die Nähe seines Anschlagsziels gelangen muss, geht schon auf dem Weg nach Paris, bei dem er die Kutsche seiner Liebe aus dem Morast retten und anschließend begleiten darf, einem Undercover-Provokateur auf den Leim. Denn Geheimdienstchef Dubois hat den eigentlichen Kontakt verhaften lassen und die Identität des Mitverschwörers am Hof angenommen. Der Chef des Inlandgeheimdienstes ist sich nicht zu schade dafür diese Klamottennummer weiter durchzuziehen. Schon um seinen allzu leichtfertigen und zu Milde neigenden Chef zu beschützen und seine Ansprüche auf einen Kardinalshut geltend zu machen.
In der Rolle des armseligen Kapitäns zieht er sogar in der Bastille die Fäden, wo er den jungen und ahnungslosen Lockvogel untergebracht hat, während er die Verschwörung in der Bretagne durch externe Kräfte zerschlagen lässt. Damit entzieht er den hochadeligen Häupten die übliche Grundlage noch oder wieder einmal davonzukommen.
Die Konspiration und Kommunikation mit den Verschwörern aus dem vorherigen Roman (Ritter von Harmenthal) ist eine Art heiteres Gesellenstück zum Verhältnis von Edmond Dantes und Abbé Faria. Allerdings fungiert der unbedarfte Gaston unfreiwillig als Informationsbeschaffer, ehe sein Führungsagenten sich genötigt sieht, die nächste Trauung in der Bastille (siehe Harmenthal) zu vereiteln und dafür die Strickleiter auspackt.
Die Betriebsblindheit Gastons, der auch auf freiem Fuß auf seinem Ehrenwort dem Attentatsplan beharrt und nicht einfach abhauen will, ist schon schwer erträglich. Erst recht, wenn er in Debatten mit dem vermeintlichen Oberhaupt der Verschwörung nicht bemerkt, dass er sich mit dem Ziel des Anschlags unterhält. Auch der der Umstand,
Dumas und Macquet probieren in der Fortsetzung zum Ritter von Harmenthal so einiges aus und vernähen allerlei offene Fäden. Alles in allem ein zweites Buch mit viel Zukunftspotenzial, aber auch viel schlechter Routine der Ära. Die Dramaversion geriet dann zur dünnen Klamotte.

Sajnos ez nem sikerült jól, Monsieur Dumas! Nem a befejezés miatt, arra felkészültem már a közepétől. A gond az, hogy egyenetlen a történetírás, nem tudjuk igazán kiről szól a regény-hiába szerepel a címben a régens lánya./ Már az egyik/.
A regényalakok jellegtelenek, pedig a történelemnek ez is érdekes korszaka volt. Az író neves regényeiben sokkal árnyaltabb, érdekesebb szereplők vannak. Itt a régens egy szuperpozitív ember, hol van már Richelieu bíboros összetett személyisége ! /A bíborost amúgy eleinte túl sötétnek ábrázolta az író, de később korrigált, a Testőrök végén, és a Húsz év múlva regényben.
Azt hiszem, ezt nem egyedül alkotta Dumas, 1845-ben több művet is írt-amellett köztudottan együtt dolgozott másokkal, nem is egyszer. Ha csak ötleteket kapott, akkor ő elég jókat írt az alapanyagból, de ez a könyv nekem csalódás.

Exquisitely plotted romance following on the heels of the events in Dumas’ Chevalier D’Harmental. The hero is somewhat less dashing than the latter, and the story narrower in focus, but overall a compelling drama from the period of Louis XV’s regency.

Dumas really was a wonderful writer. The plotting, the mystery, the madterful storytelling, scintillating dialogue, heroes and villains. He was the page turner of his age.

This one is effectively part two, Chevalier D’Harmental being part one, but they stand alone perfectly well. We’re in the Regency of Louis XV and plots abound. A very enjoyable adventure, and manipulation of emotions!

Chevalier Gaston de Chanley loves Helene de Chaverny, raised in a convent as an orphan but in reality the daughter of somebody very highly placed in early 18th century France. They long to be married, but Gaston has sworn an oath to a cabal of plotting Bretons to murder their enemy, the prince regent Philippe Duc D'Orleans.

This is a historical romance very much in the vein of Sir Walter Scott, so I am sure you can guess the crux of the plot from there. Based on the Pontcelec conspiracy of 1719, The Regent's Daughter is the sequel to The Conspirator's, which must have focussed on the Callemare conspiracy, which immediately preceded it.

As such, the Duc D'Orleans and his scheming minister Dubois are the principle historical figures who straddle the two stories, and an interesting pair they are too. Their contradictory characters make for an entertaining relationship of mutual reliance yet moral disgust, which Dumas has plenty of fun with during some lively conversations.

D'Orleans is more interested in pleasure and honour, relying on the wiles of Dubois to keep him alive, though considering him something of a 'second Mephistopheles'. Dubois is all politics and deceit, so sure of his worth that he shamelessly spies on his master and never hesitates to boast about it, nor to give his master a flea in his ear for his imprudent behaviour.

I have only read one novel by Dumas before, not one of his Musketeer classics but a late and little known one called Black Tulip, which was terrible. This book was more like the Dumas I was expecting, so much so that the other one seems like it was written by a talentless hack using his name.

The dialogue is brisk and peppered with a pleasing number of French oaths, most frequently either "Diable!" or "Mon Dieu!" The prose has nothing like the poetry of Scott, but nor has it the stodginess. The romance scenes never test the patience either, which I often find to be case in such stories.

The only fault I find with it is a dearth of action. The events follow the real Pontcelec closely, but it's customary in historical romances to enliven things with some swashbuckling invention, a swordfight, a duel etc. Dumas does give us the intrigue, the disguises, even a touch of witchcraft, but not enough daring do.

Dumas goes for wrecking good fun: intrigue, blood, romance. He sets the stage and has the entire cast scheming, and one even comes to like the rather mealy regent himself, slightly strung on puppet strings by the nefarious "abbe'" and counseler -- quite a Jafar, no doubt Disney pilfered the type -- and then? Oy.

Read the entire thing up to the final five pages, and then quietly set the book aside. Imagine your own end. Because Dumas has a bloody obsession with the tragic, and iron-fists such endings as enthusiastically as Disney pulls for Happily Ever After -- whatever the odds; whatever the natural progression; whatever, indeed.

I took ages with this book though it's only a slim volume. It didn't really hold my attention - the heroine is vapid and the hero is plain stupid. Oh, that ridiculous, entirely masculine, notion of 'honour'! How is it 'honourable' to keep an oath, even when it involves committing a sin, when it's ill-informed, when it destroys one's own life and the lives of others (inc a few poor horses)? Gaston is a short-sighted, dim-witted fool. However, I did enjoy the complex relationship between the regent and Dubois. Dubois is a wickedly funny villain and by far the most interesting character in this tale.

I really do love Dumas. I love how he intertwined romance and adventure in his novels. For me, this novel is tied with "The Three Musketeers" as my favourite Dumas novel.

This is a sequel to 'The Conspirators' also written by Alexandre Dumas. The story is very similar: a love story going hand and hand with a conspiracy. In the story, there are many twists and turns and remarkable coincidences.

The protagonist (Gaston de Chanlay), has a moral compass which in my opinion goes beyond normal. Dumas attempts to explain the reasoning behind this moral compass but I believe really fails to explain Gaston's actions adequately. The ending is shocking.

Gaston is quite naive even though he's 25 years of age. The folks who are involved with the conspiracy don't have a very sophisticated way of communication and therefore can be easily infiltrated which in this case leads to all kinds of difficulties.

I enjoyed the action, particularly when Gaston was sent to prison. Gaston was able to communicate with all of the residents which was quite entertaining.

I don't know what it is about France or perhaps it's just Dumas' stories but there's always a very young woman involved in a romance. In this case the love interest of Gaston (Helene) is only 16 years of age.

This novel is on par with 'The Conspirators' with some hints of excellence which can be found in other Dumas novels.

Doamna ducesă de Berri, la care se ducea regentul, era, orice s-ar fi spus, fiica mult iubită a inimii sale. Cuprinsă la vârsta de șapte ani de o maladie pe care medicii au considerat-o mortală și abandonată de către aceștia, ea căzuse din nou în mâinile tatălui său, care practica un pic de medicină, după cum se știe, și care, tratând-o după metodele lui, ajunsese până acolo încât s-o salveze. Începând de atunci, această dragoste părintească a regentului față de dânsa devenise slăbiciune. Începând de la vârsta aceea, îl lăsase pe acest copil voluntar și semeț să facă tot ceea ce-i trecuse prin cap; educația lui, foarte neglijată, se resimțise de acest abandon la propria lui voință, ceea ce nu-l împiedicase pe Ludovic al XIV-lea s-o aleagă pentru a deveni soția nepotului său, ducele de Berri. Se știe modul în care moartea a topit dintr-o dată întreita posteritate regală și cum se stinseră în câțiva ani marele delfin, ducele și ducesa de Bourgogne, precum și ducele de Berri.

Rămasă văduvă la douăzeci de ani, iubindu-și tatăl cu o gingășie aproape egală cu aceea pe care el i-o consacrase, având a alege între societatea din Versailles și aceea de la Palatul Regal, ducesa de Berri, frumoasă, tânără, jinduind către plăceri, nu ezitase: împărțise sărbătorile, plăcerile și uneori chiar orgiile ducelui; iar dintr-o dată ciudate calomnii, provenind în același timp de la Saint-Cyr și de la Sceaux, din partea doamnei de Maintenon și a doamnei du Maine, se răspândiseră în ceea ce privește relațiile dintre tată și fiică. Și mai era ceva în plus, era pe punctul de a-i satisface o altă cerere nu mai puțin exorbitantă, care desigur ar fi provocat o revoltă în sânul nobilimii, și anume un baldachin la Operă, când, din fericire pentru fericirea regentului, ducesa de Berri se îndrăgostise de cavalerul de Riom.

Cavalerul de Riom era un cadet din Auvergne, nepot ori strănepot al ducelui de Lauzun, care venise în 1815 la Paris pentru a-și încerca norocul și care o întâlnise la Luxembourg. Dar nu trebuie să uităm nicio clipă că înverșunarea aceasta avea o altă cauză pe care o aflăm consemnată nu numai în Saint-Simon, ci și în toate cronicile epocii pe deasupra, acea fatală plimbare prin Paris cu tobe și trâmbițe, acel nefericit tron cu trei trepte pe care dânsa îl primise pe ambasadorul Veneției, în sfârșit, acea exorbitantă pretenție, având de-acum o companie de gardă, să mai aibă și un baldachin la Operă.

Însă nu această indignare generală, stârnită de prințesă, îl mâniase atât de tare pe ducele de Orléans împotriva fiicei sale, ci autoritatea pe care aceasta i-o acordase amantului ei: Riom, crescut de același duce de Lauzun, care zdrobea mâna prințesei de Monaco cu călcâiul cizmelor pe care o punea să i le scoată seara fiica lui Gaston d’Orléans și care îi dăduse, în ceea ce privește prințesele, nepotului său strașnice instrucțiuni pe care acesta le urmase ca la carte: „Femeile din Franța, îi spusese acesta lui Riom, vor să fie conduse cu ciomagul ridicat!” Riom, plin de încredere în experiența unchiului său, o dresase atât de bine pe ducesa de Berri, încât aceasta nu mai îndrăznea să dea o serbare fără aprobarea lui, să apară la Operă fără încuviințarea lui, ori să îmbrace o rochie fără sfatul său.

Not the best of Dumas’ novels, but as usual it’s a tranche of history that reads like a page-turner…

Un noble de la Bretagne serait-il capable de poursuivre à la fois l’amour, et une conspiration contre le régent de la France?

On trouve ici des thèmes qui ont été déjà beaucoup traités dans sa préquelle, c’est-à-dire Le Chevalier d’Harmental, donc l’amour évidemment, en particulier celui entre Gascon et Hélène, mais aussi celui entre cette dernière et son père, le régent de la France, Philippe d’Orléans. En plus, et comme dans Le Chevalier d’Harmental, il y a l’honneur, car le jeune Gascon reçoit plusieurs chances pour quitter la conspiration dont il avait décidé de prendre partie, mais il n’y renonce jamais, puisqu’il ne veut point abandonner ses compagnes.

L’histoire commence avec un bref introduction de Gascon et de ses camarades de la Bretagne, avec lesquels il conspire contre le régent de la France, afin d’obtenir l’indépendence de sa région, et, après, nous nous sommes aussi introduits à sa femme, Hélène, qui se trouve dans un convent, auquel le jeune à accès grâce à son influence. Éventuellement, elle doit partir pour Paris, et Gascon, qui doit aussi y aller, pour achèver ses objectifs sanglants, l’accompagne. On découvre, peu après, que Hélène est une fille secrète du régent, lequel, cependant, ne veut point lui faire découvrir son identité, en se cachant avec plusieurs astuces, chaque fois qu’il la rencontre. Les deux amants devront faire face à plusieurs défis, afin de consacrer leur amour…

Parmi les moments que j’ai appréciés le plus, on trouve tout ce qui se passe à la Bastille, où on trouve des personnages du livre précédent, qui y ont été emprisonnés, après les événements de la conspiration de Cellamare, mais qui arrivent à faire de toute façon ce qu’ils veulent, comme Gascon tôt découvre. Ensuite, il y a la scène où Gascon est épargné par le régent, qui était parfaitement au courant de ses plans (de le tuer), mais qui décide, enfin, et pour ne faire pas mourir de douleur sa fille, de le laisser aller, comme il avait également fait, cependant, avec l’honorable d’Harmental.

J’ai passé de très bons moments avec le livre, mais, du coup, je n’ai pas trop aimé la séquence finale, car l’histoire était pour la plupart carrément heureuse, et je croyais, par conséquent, qu’il se serait terminé avec une joyeuse fin, exactement comme dans sa préquelle. J’étais donc vachement déçu quand tout le monde a fini par mourir, y compris les compagnes de Gascon, qui auraient aussi dû être épargnés, mais, malheureusement, leur digne ami arrive trop tard pour les sauver, et il se fait donc exécuter avec eux pour les rejoindre dans l’au-delà, en causant ainsi, cependant, la meurt de sa femme.

Pour conclure, ce n’est pas vraiment nécessaire de lire ce livre, car, même si c’est une suite au phénoménal Le Chevalier d’Harmental, le juste chevalier, qui donne le nom à ce dernier, est seulement mentionné une fois, et cependant on n’apprend pas beaucoup à propos de ce qui est arrivé à lui et à sa femme. Cela dit, même si on ne le considère pas comme une suite, c’est toujours une œuvre de Dumas, donc ça peut être une raison assez forte pour lui jeter un coup d’œil.

Roman méconnu de cet auteur et je comprends pourquoi : C'est une suite de platitudes longues, très longues. Des personnages qui manquent cruellement de charisme sauf Dubois la main droite du Régent que j'ai apprécié détester et dont j'envie son talent de joueur d'échec avec ses multitudes de coups d'avance. Les autres essayent d'avoir du panache mais ça ne fonctionne pas très bien. Sans compter sur Hélène décrite comme une jeune fille vertueuse, naïve et sans ambition, cloisonnée dans sa petite vie étriquée et qui se pâme d'un amour impossible ou presque... Jeune fille sortie du couvent qui aurait pu y rester puisque elle manque cruellement de volonté et d'esprit de liberté. C'était sûrement la vison d'un auteur pour les femmes de cette époque où elle devaient ressembler à des chatons bien éduquer ne pouvant sortir leurs griffent et ne servaient qu'à faire des câlins tout gentils ; même si parfois un feulement arrive, il est vite stopper avec une petite tape sur la tête. Quant à Gaston, ce jeune homme dont la détermination est sans faille on ne peut que lui trouver un peu de respect pour son honneur buté qui lui fera accomplir le pire. Très loin de la modernité qui m'était apparue à la lecture du comte de Monte-Cristo, ce roman est un drame autant pour le couple d'amoureux que pour le régent lui-même qui ne trouvera sans doute jamais la rédemption.
Un roman qui s'étire en longueur et assez ennuyant au final.
Je n'en garderai pas un souvenir impérissable loin de là.

To me, this was a phenomenal book by Dumas. Something he is truly synonymous for. The story revolves around the love affair of The Regents Daughter and Gastón, a hot blooded young gentleman.

It is a story of plot, intrigue, love, honour, fighting for a cause, attempted escapes. The full works. Something truly reminiscent of ‘The Three Musketeers’.

If for nothing else, being overly critical, the scenes set in The Bastille, like similar scenes in other Dumas books, are strikingly similar to the prison section of The Count of Monte Cristo.

دوما زمان کودکی لویی پانزدهم رو روایت می‌کنه که ‌به‌خاطر کمی سنش، نائب‌السلطنه حکومت رو به‌عهده گرفته بود. داستان، شرارت‌های بعضی سیاست‌مداران، عاشقانه‌های یه پسر جوان و یه دختر راهبه، و نقشه‌ی یه قتل رو روایت می‌کنه که به بهترین شکل کنار هم قرار گرفتن. از اون رمان‌هاییه که در ذهن خواننده موندگار می‌شن.

Dumas az egyik kedvenc íróm, bár ez még csak a második történet, amit tőle olvastam. Nagyon tetszett. Igaz, hogy majdnem megríkatott, de egyes könyveknek ez a lényege. Nem hosszú a könyv, a cselekmény ideje sem hosszú, de annál tartalmasabb.
Bárki, olvasd el nyugodtan! Én csak ezt tudom ajánlani.

Absolutely loved it. The narration style reminds me a lot of "of mice and men" heavy on dialogs, with minimal back story to properly position the reader in the scene. A brilliant historical fiction novel with hillarious characters, familly drama and royal justice.

Dumas a son meilleur. De l’amour, un amant héroïque, un complot breton contre le Régent. Et le terrible abbé Dubois qui veille au grain. Superbe roman. Immense Dumas. Le livre a inspiré le film “Que la fête commence “.

Great story, sadly real life does have a way of disappointing you, so I wasn't satisfied with the ending. Although that is NOT a reason to mark it down.

Another brilliant read. But then I am a bit of a fan and tend to say that about most of his books. .

Déçue, déçue, déçue..... On s'y ennuie. Je n'ai absolument pas accroché. On est loin des trois mousquetaires et de Vingt ans après.

Un roman très peu connu du grand Dumas, suite du Chevalier d’Harmental et un bon moment de lecture !

J’ai aimé retrouver cette plume si particulière du milieu du XIXe siècle. Un récit foisonnant, voluptueux, où les actions, les quiproquos s’enchaînent, donnant un rythme soutenu qui entraîne le lecteur sans jamais le lasser. Un suspense dans plusieurs situations qui fonctionne encore très bien de nos jours : va-t’il le reconnaître ? Va-t’il arriver à temps ? Vont-ils se croiser ? 🙈 Et nous, lecteurs, sommes complices de tout ça.

Cela fait du bien de revenir à des lectures « classiques » qui ont un charme certain avec la présence d’un romantisme pur. Déclaration d’amour sur fond de longues et belles tirades, promesse d’amour éternel…

La seule petite chose qui m’a dérangé, c’est les dialogues qui sont trop alambiqués avec de nombreuses répétitions. Mais au-delà de ça, j’ai passé un très bon moment et j’ai dorénavant encore plus envie de découvrir l’œuvre de Dumas, car ce roman était seulement mon deuxième de l’auteur.

I definitely recommend this book, yet again exceeding my expectations! I could barely put it down for a moment, because there was always something happening. From conspiracies in Bretagne to secret communications in the Bastille, it is unforgettable and highly recommended, as is it’s prequel, “The Conspirators”, otherwise known as The “Chevalier D’harmental.” Enjoy another of Dumas’ excellent novels full of love, revenge and conspiracies...

I grew up reading Dumas. “The Three Musketeers” is one of my most favorite books. So I had very high expectation about “The Regent’s Daughter”. Sadly , even tho the book is pretty short, it felt like an endless torture.... I had to keep forcing myself to keep reading . I didn’t care at all about the story or the characters...
