First off, let me say that I loved Oliver and Ursula's story. Each was just what the other needed to move forward. I loved that Oliver hasn't had an easy time since his turning. It gives more depths to the possibilities of becoming a vampire and the unique challenges it presents. I liked that Ursula was a mix of strength and vulnerability. Their chemistry was perfect and the story was *excellent* when the two of them were together.
But...
From the beginning of the series, we are told how much the Scanguards team love and respect each other; how they trust each other with their lives. They've been together for years, some for centuries, and are as much a family as they are a business partnership. However, in almost every book and especially in this one, we are told this, but we don't SEE this.
(spoilers ahead)
Oliver is turned and is having trouble controlling his bloodlust when it comes to tasty humans over bland bottled blood. Does his Sire stay with him to help him through those critical first months? No, he's in Europe banging Rose on their honeymoon. Does his mentor help him through this difficult time and ensure he's adapted to his new life? Nope, Samson is nowhere to be seen until much later in the book. Instead, he's left to the tender mercies of one of the main characters I'd love to see become a vamp buffet: Blake, the most annoying human in history.
We see more of this love, trust and respect when Maya never once entertains the fact that Oliver is telling the truth. She's so ready to get him kicked out of Scanguards that she must have missed the very human signs of prevarication from Ursula that she normally would have noticed. When Ursula confirms his innocence, we get a half-hearted apology with the underlying insult of "well, you were telling the truth *this time*."
Then there's Zane. Has there ever been a character with more lost potential than Zane? While I eagerly anticipated his book, it fell short of my hopes for him. This book dropped him further into the "actively dislike" category. With all of his experiences, and all his supposed skill, he failed to realized a clean-up job when he saw it? An abandoned building in that section of town would not have smelled like cleanser unless someone was about to purchase it or trying to remove all trace of their existence. When it's proven that Oliver was right, he went further into douchebag territory by simply blowing it all off as no big deal.
And then there's Samson. After working with Oliver for three years as a human, he immediately believes the worst of the young vampire and dismisses him as a disappointment without listening to a bloody thing the man had to say. Granted, he was the only one whose apology I actually gave any credit to but it was a shame that it had to be made. Quinn, Rose, Amaury, *ALL* of them fell short of the mark by not helping him when he was first turned and then calling him a liar when he needed their support.
The book's main protagonist wasn't the vampire running the blood-whore business. It was the other Scanguard's vampires. And that's why the book gets a 3/5 when Oliver and Ursula's story is a 5/5.
This is such a wonderful series. I love the world and all its characters.
This book was really great and I was going to give it four stars, right up until the last 5%. But I’ll explain more about that later on.
I really like Oliver. I liked that we got to know him as a human, working for Scanguard’s, and then we go to see him be turned into a vampire. I felt so bad for him, seeing him struggle with his need for blood. He knows what he should do, but he just can’t seem to drink blood from the bottle. I hated the way everyone doubted him and didn’t give him the trust he deserves. They’ve all screwed up, defied orders and made mistakes, why wasn’t Oliver entitled to the same? They all treated him like crap, and every time of them accused him of lying, I wanted to slap them!
Ursula is a good, strong heroine! She’s capable and serious, but she can also be fun too. She accepts when she needs help and offers her help too, no matter what they need. I really liked her.
The big problem I had with this book was the storyline. I absolutely loved it in the beginning, Asian girls being sold to vampires just for a taste of their blood… Why was it only Asian girls? Why does their blood have a drugging effect on vampires when they’re impervious to drink and drugs? It was a fantastic idea… Oliver was a drug addict in his human life which leaves him unable to ever drink her blood, this also means that they cannot blood-bond or solidify their relationship. I could not wait to find out how they were going to make their relationship work, and to discover what the girls had in common. Had they been drugged or came from the same place in China that had been poisoned or something? There were so many possibilities. When I got to 95% I was afraid I wasn’t going to get any answers at all. But then we got them… I was so utterly disappointed. The answers (for me) were so silly and far-fetched! I actually laughed out loud, and then was just annoyed! It was all thrown out there in like two sentences, it was awful.
Read ahead if you want to know what happened… spoilers ahead…
I dropped it down to three stars then and there. This author is so amazing and talented, I just don’t get why she did this. I was very disappointed.
I had been expecting Thomas and Eddie’s book for the last two books and then it turned out to be someone else, which was getting really annoying, but I am so glad it’s finally here. Now that Oliver has dropped the bomb to Eddie, things are gonna get crazy. I cannot wait :D
So disappointed with this book. I love this series and I'll be reading the next one. I'm anxious for Thomas to get his own book. Oliver's book was a big disappointment for me though. I've come to love the Scanguards "family" feel. They all felt close knit and you felt the unity in the previous books. Oliver was left out to dry in the beginning of his book as a new vampire. And Maya - holy bitch mode. She really turned me off of the book. She wouldn't listen to anything Oliver said. She immediately believed the worst and threw the full force of her Bitch at him and wouldn't give him a chance. She absolutely did not have his back. I gave up at 17%.
First paragraph: Hunger clawed at him. He fought the urge that controlled him, the need that made him shiver like an addict on withdrawal. He’d never imagined it being this painful, this difficult to resist, yet the thought of blood consumed every minute of his waking hours. Even during sleep, he only dreamt of pulsating veins, of warm blood that still contained a human’s life force, of sinking his fangs into a living, breathing being. But worst of all, he dreamt of the power it gave him, the power over life and death.
I struggled with this book: it seemed like all of my beloved characters - Samson, Zane, Maya, etc. - took the asshole pill and decided to make emotion-laden decisions against Oliver at every turn. Poor Oliver just couldn't catch a break - everyone thought he was lying, he was treated like a 13 year old, people kept barging into his room and telling him what to do. I felt like I was watching a teenage melodrama soap.
Still love the series, still love the characters, still love the Scanguards. Just not this one.
1 1/2 stars Argh! Frustratingly predictable. Only 1/4 in and so obvious. The blame game. Didn't do it! Yes you did. Did not. Did too. And so fucking predictable.
OK finished and it didn't get much better as they "investigate" so stupidly into Ursula's claim, then Zane gives an unforgivable order without even looking into what she says also. at this point I'm too far gone into the worse investigative firm ever... again. And the orders... cannot take the back so horrible.
Then Oliver decides to believe, her proves her right, and what do they do? Wow, what trust this organization has with its people. Hey when it all comes out and they find out about Oliver and Ursula, it is almost just past over, no 'I told you so' or 'you went against our orders' again. For some reason they now trust him with her? Hmm?
The biggest problem with this book is the antagonists aren't the bad vampires running a blood brothel but his friends, family, and colleagues. I ended up hating them more than the bad guy (who of course is the bad guy, so predictable) because they are assholes. With friends like those, who needs enemies?
I really wanted to get to Thomas' story and should have just skipped to it but forced myself to read the 2 I had that came first. I suspect Thomas' story will be my last. This started out as a decent series but the last 3 I've read just leave me a bit mad. Too stupid, too predictable, and horrid characters that are suppose to be friends. The romance was OK, just OK, not enough to keep this from being pretty bad for me overall.
Newly turned Oliver is having trouble controlling his urge to feed from humans. Hating the bagged blood that most of his colleagues use. While out looking for someone to feed from, a young beautiful chinese girl runs into him asking him to save her. Oliver helps her to his car, but she passes out. He decides to take her home with him. Calling Maya, who is a doctor for help. Then they discover she has been bitten by a vampire, Maya accuses Oliver.
When Ursula comes to, she confirms that Oliver did not bite her. But Ursula has a fantastic story, she claims that she has been kept a prisoner for three years by vampires who used her as a blood whore. She says there are other girls, and she wants to set them free as well. Oliver and the others at Scanguards do not believe this as it doesn't make sense. Why would vampires pay to drink blood from humans, when they can do so with ease from anyone they choose. Needing proof to what Usula is saying they decide to investigate. In the meantime Oliver who is deeply attracted to Ursula finds it increasingly difficult to stay away from her.
After reading the last book in the series which I was not too keen on, reading this was a totally different experience. Right from the first page the reader is drawn into the story, fast paced and full of action the story moves forward. I loved Oliver, he's trying hard to control his thirst, hating the bagged blood. Not wanting to frighten Ursula he promises not to bite her. The two of them together lit up the pages. The love scenes were hot and passionate. With a really good story that compliments the romance between the two. All of the characters from the previous books appear in this as well. This is a recommended read for all the fans of the series.
Full disclosure - I haven't finished the book yet but since I'm not sure I will I'm writing this now.
I am relieved to have seen some other reviews that reflect how I feel while reading this book, which is...disappointed.
I recently came across the Scanguards series and have been able to get all books up to Cain's story which has not yet been released. I flew through the first few books and really enjoyed them. While Gabriel's story wasn't my favorite, I really enjoyed Samson, Amaury's and Zane's stories.
I'm looking forward to Thomas as well but since I like to read a series in order I'm reading Oliver's now....but it's lousy. Oliver has been portrayed as a nice, likeable guy in all the previous books and his vampire friends all spoke well of him but suddenly now that he's a vampire they are acting like he's been a spoiled brat or something! They keep berating him for his behaviour and yet they spend absolutely no time helping him adjust to his new nature. On top of that the story with Ursula is really dumb. At first I was intrigued but since the moment she escaped and was rescued it's like everyone took their stupid pills. I'm 100 + pages in and yet NONE of the intelligent vampires have connected her horror story with the sudden surge of crazy blood-lusting vampires? And the connection between Oliver and Ursula is just so silly. She's been held prisoner and violently used for 3 years yet upon escaping from prison she swoons from one hot kiss with Oliver??
When the characters have great chemistry then I can often let a silly plot go but when there is no chemistry AND no plot then it's really really difficult to suspend belief.
I hope that the next book will put things back on track.
To begin with, it was totally different from the other books in the series and not in the good way. When I found out that there was going to be a book about Oliver I was over the moon.So ,yeah! When I finished the book I was like "Only this? Where's the other half of the book?"
What I liked:
Oliver.I just looooooooooved him.Ever since I started the series I knew that he was special. And to tell the truth I don't think that Ursula was the perfect match fo him.I do admit though that she helped him when he needed someone the most. When even his friends didn't have faith in her. Moreover, I liked how amicable Oliver seemed to be with some of the characters we met in the previous book.
What I didn't like:
I don't know why but in this book the main characters from previous books (Samson and Zane mainly) were so hypocrites and hostile against Oliver when the only thing that he did wrong was point out the truth... And having read the previous books I'm aware of the fact that Samson and Zane are not actually so bad!!! Anyway, I didn't like Usrula.I didn't even like her name! Not to sound heartless, I'm sorry for what she went through but it's pretty hard for me to imagine that after three years imprisoned by vampires she's able to trust one of them. It's an irony.
All in all, it was a pretty decent book that should be read by those of you who have already read the previous one.
This one felt a little "simple" compared the last couple of books we have had in this series. So Oliver just got turned last book after the car accident and he is still learning to control his blood urges. He still craves human blood from the source and sneaks off to get some sips for a live source as opposed to the bottled blood Scanguards provide him.
One of his sneaking out sessions, he runs into an Asian girl who had been clearly attacked and Oliver saves her. She is revealed as Ursula, a blood slave for 3 years before she escaped. The only problem is that the Scanguard brass don't believe Ursula's story about her blood being as addictive as heroin and about a business run by vampires keeping women as blood slaves.
they are worried about Oliver who was an addict in his human life so they use subterfuge to separate Oliver and Ursula. So now it's up to Oliver to prove that Ursula is telling the truth, especially since he has fallen for her and he knows her "owner" is still hunting her.
I felt bad for Oliver because the old heads definitely treated him like a current Addict. No one trusted him or his judgment, they second guessed everything he said. It must have been awful for me. I liked him and Ursula but they weren't as hawt as Zane or Yvette's book. I think this book was probably my least favorite in the series.
I loved going back to Tina Folsom's vampire world, but despite the fact that the book kept some of the characteristics of the series that I love, I was disappointed because I didn't like the main characters all that much. I felt that the recent transformation of Oliver could've made for a more interesting plot. Instead, his bloodlust was almost out of control, than he met Ursula and all his problems were resolved. The plot lacked depth and while depth is a relative term in this genre, still I felt that something was missing.
A little bit for everyone Suspense, romance, steam, vampires-Good read for a cold night.

My Thoughts:
I have to admit I was a bit disappointed in this book. I loved Oliver's character through out the series and really looked forward to reading his story and find out who his mate was going to be. I thought Ursula would be a good mate for him but I had a really hard time warming up and connecting with her. The more I read of her background the less I found her believable. Her parents were diplomats from China which means at most she was 1st generation American. I just didn't see the cultural differences that would be glaring obvious in a 1st gen. I understood her hesitation to trust but I just couldn't *feel* it. I also was disappointed in how the rest of the Scanguards treated Oliver it just didn't seem in character, well except for Zane and he was a major a$$hole in this novel which again put me off cause I thought he would mellow out a bit since his story. But Maya etc woah over the top. My last issue was with Blake and Oliver, I get that there is a sibling rivalry there but with Oliver's age and the fact he had been on his own for a long time again I had a believablity issue.
Putting this all aside I did enjoy the story and there were many parts of the book I did like so for me this is a 3 star read and I can't wait for the next book. I know it will be better.

This series started off really strong, I loved the first books and then the last couple were a chore to get through. This one is really well done but there are parts that are super annoying.
Oliver is a really interesting character because we have known him from the beginning of the series and experienced his turn in the last book. I really liked that he had to struggle and we got a glimpse into what happens to a new vamp. It makes him more real than some of the other guys. I also applaud him for not buckling in the face of all his "friends" doubts.
Ursula is another great gal, she had been through so much and kept fighting. If I had been held for years and only knew pain from vampires it would be unlikely I would trust any, even ones who saved me, right away. Her strength and sass were engaging throughout.
The smexy steam was delicious. I loved the car scene. Oh girl, you will need a cold drink for that one! And when the narrator, Eric G. Dove, reads it to you in his delicious voice...goodbye panties! He has such a way with his words. I could listen to him for hours, oh wait, I did!
It is becoming a theme in the books that the hero has to fight his friend about the girl. None of them had an easy road to love, so it is annoying they forget how they felt in a similar situation. I also felt they vilified Oliver for his past addiction, way to make him feel like he can over come his mistakes. I was really PO'd at the whole scene where nobody would believe him about what he had and had not done. And then when he is proved innocent all he gets is a backhanded apology. Not cool at all!
I am eager for the next book, even though MM is not really my thing. I want to see Thomas get his HEA, especially after his heartbreak in the first book.
As usual, another great read about the Scanguards Vampires.
I really felt for newly turned Oliver, in this, his story. We know Samson saved Oliver from himself, and his drug addiction years ago, but the fact that the other Scanguards couldn't see that he had infact changed his ways was really unfair.
This story takes up about two months after Quinn's Undying Rose finishes, where Quinn had been forced to change Oliver or lose him to a horrific death. Oliver has struggled with the need for blood, and still prefers to hunt for his food, in preference to bottled blood. It is on one of his nights out that he literally runs into Ursula. She tells him what seems a crazy story, of being kept prisoner for her blood. She has the injuries to back her up, but when Oliver takes her home, it is him who is blamed for hurting her, and allowing his weakness for wanting to hunt take over. Everyone turns against Oliver in this story, which seems so different to usual welcoming ways of the Scanguards family.
Oliver, faces off against both Samson and Quinn and also manages to upset almost all the other Scanguards members as well, on his quest to find the truth, because literally no-one would give him the benefit of the doubt, and then they all wondered why he didn't tell them what he had found out, and that he preferred to take matters into his own hands.
Another great story in an excellent series, although there were a lot of different sides of the characters coming to the fore.
Oliver is only been vampire for two months and still has trouble controlling his urges but he certainly doesn't need a babysitter like Blake. Oliver having Blake watch his every move is beyond frustrating. Oliver needs to get away from everyone. Ursula Wei has been held captive for the last three years because of her bloods potency. Ursula seeks to escape from this hellish existence. When Ursula's bid for freedom makes itself known she doesn't hesitate she runs. Ursula runs smack into handsome stranger. Oliver is stunned by beauty rushing into his arms. She makes an offer Oliver simply can't refuse. When Oliver discovers that another vampire harmed this beauty makes him all the more determined to help her. Oliver calls Maya for help only to be accused of harming the young woman. No one believes he's innocent which frustrates Oliver even more. Ursula isn't sure who to trust but knows that Oliver wouldn't hurt her. Ursula tells of her captivity and her special blood. Who would capture young woman for blood? Can Oliver proof his worth? Will Oliver be tempted? Your answers await you in Oliver's Hunger.
I've always like Oliver since his appearance in Samson's Lovely Mortal. Oliver's struggles only make him more of an alpha male in my opinion. Ursula's quiet strength and determination make her Oliver's perfect mate. I'm taking a serious dislike to Blake and Cain in this book. I'm definitely looking forward to the next adventure in this series.
It got three stars because the love scenes was hot!! Ursula, I could not connect with her. I didn't like the mistrust they all had for Oliver and constantly calling him a liar and never supporting him. WTF!! Maya gave him a half-ass apology when she found out he was telling the truth, the Bitch! Zane, Quinn, Rose and Amaury, SUCKED. (no pun intended) Samson not as much but still sucked. Gosh, let not forget Blake - why was he there - just to annoy me. This was not my favorite of the series.

I absolutely loved this book!! another fantastic addition to the Scanguards series, Oliver showed him self to be more of a man in this book then the boyish Oliver in the past books and i loved seeing this side of him it made me like him so much more, its full of hot scenes which kept me hooked, i read it that fast they were that good lol and this is a must read for all those who love the Scanguards series you cant miss it out not with out missing a little bit about Thomas and Eddy ;)
Said that I'll love this book at the start and by the end I wasn't disappointed. Tina's stories never fail to entertain you and surprise you all the way. Can't wait for more sexy, funny and romantic Scanguards Vampires.
Another brilliant story in this Scanguards vampire Series . Oliver's story did not let us down and had all the magic of the other stories in this series . cannot wait for the next book .
This was a excellent story. I love Oliver. I liked the whole story line. Fast paced and sexy as hell. I can not wait for Thomas' book...come on October. Highly recommend this series...
Love the story but hated how Oliver was disrespected and not trusted. Such a sad let down in this series and the way Oliver is treated, he should have told them all to get stuffed at the end. Oliver has been a trusted human working for Scanguards since book 1. He is turned to save his life and is struggling to control his blood lust. I found the way he was treated by the Scanguards men rude and disrespectful. Nobody trusted him at all. When he meets and saves Ursula, even Maya turns on him and accuses him of being out of control. Okay, to be truthful, Ursula lying that she remembered nothing makes it look bad. But would you blurt out about vampires to strangers. Poor Ursula, what a fate she has been living, being used for her blood. But one very intelligent woman who could think on her feet. Loved her and Oliver together. At least the Scanguards family all pulled at the end to help Oliver and Ursula be together. Had read and reviewed this book ages ago when I first bought it.
In the last book we all saw that Oliver almost died and Quinn had to turn him in order to save him. This book picks up several months after the last. Oliver is still struggling with his hunger, and he feels like everyone has just about given up on him, that they have no faith in him. While out for a walk after having fed one night, he runs into a woman, or rather she runs into him. Ursula is a human woman who has been held captive for the last three years and has finally managed to escape. Now, Oliver has to struggle with his problems while trying to deal with the new hunger he has for this human woman.
Ursula and Oliver's story is a great addition to this series. Oliver has been around for several books now and I enjoyed getting to read a story that was mostly about him. We still get to see a few of the past characters, but it's mostly just O & U. The author did a great job bringing these two together and the narrator did a fantastic job bringing it to life. Well done to the both of them.
So, not a great book, but it worked. I think one of my biggest issues with this book is how horrible Oliver’s friends/coworkers treat him and Ursula. Being suspicious is one thing, but flat out telling a woman who was abducted that she’s lying multiple times is uncalled for. As for Oliver, he’s only two months into his transition and he’s beating himself up for not having the same level of control his friends have…mind you, they aren’t helping since they are constantly telling him how horrible he’s doing and that he has to do better. It was disappointing to see how the two main characters were beaten down for a good amount of this book. Together, these two work well. Ursula is a strong woman who survived three years in captivity. She has an incredible inner strength as she pushes to find the other women being held and used. Oliver was a bit wishy washy at first, particularly with his friends pointing out all the “lies” Ursula was telling. However, his attraction to and need to protect Ursula won out in the end.
Oliver and Ursula's Regal Tryst! 3.45***** Spoiler Alert!
Oliver tried to overcome his urge to feed on 'the hoof', when he ran into an escaped, exsanguinated Ursula. While others like Zane doubted her 'blood-whore' story, and three years imprisonment with other women, Oliver drawn to her believed, so they returned to the building and located Corbin's hidden wallet. The final battle at Vera's left Corbin dead, and Dirk soon to meet his sadist boss in HELL after Ursula dusted him at the truck rest stop battle over the other imprisoned women. Scanguard claimed to have wiped the minds of all those involved and with knowledge of Ursula's reported disappearance, and any written articles destroyed so these two life mates can be together in SanFran! HEA for Ollie and Ursula!
Great plot and character development, in this gravity defying novel. Once again money was at the root of the dehumanization of these women. It would be interesting to learn how Corbin made the ancestral Emperor connection to the genetic drugged blood, and located all those women. A good read!
