Merthur For someone with so many secrets, Merlin doesn't think he's very good at lying. So agreeing to discuss his friendship with the Prince of Wales at University as part of a televised documentary is probably not a good idea. Juggling magic, Royal protocol, suave (and persistent) Dukes, a Princess with attitude, and a serious amount of coursework was only the start. Oh and then there was Arthur himself. Yeah, probably shouldn't mention much about that...Modern AU
4.5 This was awesome. Too bad part two is unfinished, I equally crave and dread starting it. :X
When you write about a contemporary reincarnation of prince Arthur (and company), a student in university, with a bff/bf Merlin, there is only so many ways it can go :D Despite that, this isn't a retelling of The Student Prince, this is something different and differntly amazing.
When I decided to read IYN, I expected it to be similar to The Student Prince. I was very happy to see that I was wrong. While there are some similarities, the story was interesting and unique.
I'm not going to write a full review on this even though I thoroughly enjoyed it. There's something about Merthur fanfic that hits me in my happy place. I definitely swooned over this modern retelling but it didn't overtake the first spot on my Merthur love list.
Thanks for the rec Jennifer. If anyone else has any amazing fanfic recs, send 'em my way please and thank you. :-)
What a ride! Ok, soooo.... this book kinda annoyed me for a while. I can appreciate the interview format and back and forth past/present and then the way things melded... but also, I just wanted to read my boys start to finish! It’s like “hey how about that bad thing that happened?” and then they start and the beginning and your just dreading the upcoming “bad thing”.
And the burn was slooooooooow. With too many stops and starts. But also, who cares cuz they were ADORBS! The same antagonistic relationship as always but with even more underlying playfulness.
Morgana was great. Gwen and Lance were a tad superfluous but that’s ok.
Pet Peeve: if it’s a modern story, don’t have the characters reference Arthurian legend (yes the past life, just not the literary works). It muddies things.
Bohemia is such a fantastic writer. I’ve followed them for years and will continue to hope they will write more. They have so much talent and they’ve obviously worked so hard to write such beautiful works. I hope Bohemia is well and will write more.
I loved it, I loved it. With the speed I am higglong Merthur fictions, everything should become monotone and it almost became. But then I found in your name, and monotonity went out.
The story is mostly told as a memoirs of Merlin during an interview. Despite being memories, it had everything magic, love, royality, prattishness. The touch with the discussion about the cycle of life and old religion was excellently done.
Why did I subtract 1 star, because there was only Merlins POV and Arthurs POV was need at some places. How did Arthur feel after first meeting with Merlin? How did Arthur feel after breaking off with Merlin? How did Artthur feel in the almost 8 months he was in Kenya and Denmark without Merlin? And What discussion went between Arthur and Uther, and their shocks?
