"Sometimes never is a distorted perception. I love you, Hope. And I'm not the only one. I know you care about me. I see it in your eyes. I feel it. Everybody needs love. Everybody. And some people need it more than others. You're a liar if you say you don't. I'll do that for you. I'll love you. All you have to do is let me." –Sometimes Never

What happened in the years between the final chapter and epilogue of Sometimes Never? Blackbird is an 18,000+ word novella that continues Mason and Hope's story as they finish high school, start separate colleges, and confront their demons.

Though Blackbird can be read on its own, it is better enjoyed after reading Sometimes Never. Recommended for 17+ due to harsh language and some sexual situations.

Blackbird tells the story of the years between the final chapter and the epilogue of Sometimes Never, in which Hope and Mason do their separate things while still trying to make their relationship work, and also learn to confront their own issues once and for all.

I loved this one because in Blackbird, Mason's problems become more obvious. You can see just how messed up he is. In the first book, his anger and the difficulty he has with his own past are visible, but in the novella, while Hope still struggles a great deal, there is also more emphasis on Mason's struggle. He has to learn to address his temper, his quick impulses. On top of that, his problems are worsened by the fact that his mother is being frustratingly stubborn. In a way, I can understand where she's coming from and why she's acting the way she is; she has Kellin to think about too. But then I also don't think that she should be acting that way. In the first instance, it makes her a hypocrite, which I loved Hope for pointing out to her. In the second, it shows a lack of understanding on her part. It just emphasises her inability to deal with life and the readiness to give up. Despite her own pain and grief, she can't seem to comprehend that of someone else, and the pressure that she put on Mason because of this, the hurt she inflicted on him, really had me feeling for him.

As I said before, Hope is still struggling a lot here. She thought she had things figured out, but going to college has made her realise that actually, she has no idea what she's going to do. It feels like there are too many things happening, too many things to think about and decide, and they're suffocating her. There were a couple of close calls, and she put Mason through a lot, but I was happy when she really made an effort to overcome her fears and impulses. Even more so when Guy and Chase came along and speeded up the process. I was glad to see that despite everything, she did want Mason to be happy, and she was offering to sacrifice a lot if it meant his mother would allow their family to go back to how they used to be.

The ending for this is adorable, as is the epilogue of Sometimes Never. I'm so happy it ended that way.

I can't say any more. Just know that I love Cheryl McIntyre, I love her books, her characters, and even if I had her companion novel, as yet untitled, in my hands right now, it still wouldn't be soon enough. I'm going to go stalk her on Twitter now.

Where to begin. This book was a follow up to Sometimes Never. A book I loved. While Blackbird was a novella, it was short, but chock full of sweetness, and yet another novel of Cheryl McIntyre's that has captured a piece of my heart.

I’m a candy lover and always have been, so this book pulled me in from the start. I can relate to Hope. I’d eat skittles off the floor too. The ten second rule never applies.

Every character in this story was so well-defined, that I could see them, feel them, understand them, and I wanted to know them. I definitely need a best friend like Guy.

The story deals with the sensitive issue of cutting, but yet it was handled in such a way that my heart didn’t feel weighted. It was broken down with humor, with light, and with love. It was presented in a way that spoke to me. Meaning, having an affliction doesn’t define you, it’s just the symptom of, in this case, something tragic, and it gives hope to people who are struggling with these kinds of issues.

Everyone has something. Something they’re struggling with, working on, dealing with, or perhaps even running from. This is something that as human beings binds us together. What matters though, is the path we choose, the truths we endure, and the pain we suffer to come to a different place. A place that moves us toward healing. This is what Mason and Hope gave each other. Inspiration, the hope for something better, and real love.

Blackbird singing in the dead of night
Take these broken wings and learn to fly
All your life
You were only waiting for this moment to arise

Blackbird singing in the dead of night
Take these sunken eyes and learn to see
All your life
You were only waiting for this moment to be free

I will never again be able to hear the song Blackbird without thinking about Mason and Hope.

So Glad to See These Characters Again

Sometimes Never was such a gem, so I was thrilled to hear Cheryl McIntyre had written a follow-up novella about two favorite characters Hope and Mason. The author does a wonderful job of accurately portraying psychology and therapy.

Hope and Mason are trying to make their relationship work but Hope's demons and Mason's mother don't make it easy. Hope bravely faces therapy in an effort to stop injuring herself.

Mason is so wise. His mother questions him staying with a girl who cuts herself, and Mason asks her if she would judge him for staying with Hope if she had cancer. "That's different," his mother says, "because nobody asks for cancer." Mason patiently explains that Hope didn't ask to be sexually abused and cutting was the only way she knew how to deal with it. I've used the helpful cancer parallel when trying to help family members understand their loved one's eating disorder or depression or other mental illness.

It's awesome to witness Hope healing from pain, like when she bravely calls Mason's mother:

"I'm in therapy. I go every week. I've only missed one session."
"Well that's good, Hope. I'm glad."
I close my eyes and take a deep breath. "But it doesn't matter to you. Does it? I'll just always be the crazy girl that stole your son."
She laughs dryly and the sound resembles Mason's laugh. My stomach twists. "You can't understand -- you're not a mother. We have a fierce protectiveness for our children."
"Not all moms," I say quietly. I feel the tears sting my eyes and I blink them away.

Gah! Poor Hope.

Hope's bff Guy continues to steal the show with his hilarious one-liners like:

"If I wasn't gayer than a Christmas sweater, I'd steal you away from this joker in a heartbeat."

This novella fills in the blanks between the end of Sometimes Never and its epilogue in a sweet and satisfying way.

Blackbird was a nice short read about Mason & Hope's journey from graduation, moving in, counselling and engagement, which we missed in Sometimes Never.

It doesn't matter much if you missed it but for the hotness and sweetness of Mason *plus this was free ebook at my time of download* , I gave it go!

“I’m going to go crazy without you, honey.”
“Maybe I’ll go sane,” I say with a grin.”

Aww, this was a wonderful "detailed" conclusion to Mason & Hope's story. I really liked it :) It explaines the time between the end of Sometimes Never and that heart-warming epilogue.

They start going to therapy, on their own, both and in family counseling. They move together in Mason's apartment. They apply for colleges in Chicago. They get in. They move again. They become distant. They break up. They make up. Result? My heart is freakin' joyful!!

I really adored Mason in Blackbird, but he was already pretty dreamy before so my declaration of love doesn't count. But I was pretty torn about Hope. On one hand, she frustrated the hell outta me with her ongoing insecurities about Mason's love for her. I thought she was past that, but certain things triggered that situation here aswell. On the other hand, I'm so damn proud of her! Her restrain, her ambition, her way of loving... She's so worthy of respect! I feel like I've known her for a lifetime and I'm utterly sad to let her go, but she's finally happy so I'm good. *sniff* And I'm not crying happy tears. Not at all. *sniff*

I felt more connected with Jenny, Alec, Annie, Park and Dylan -- the ones that weren't necesarilly important characters in Sometimes Never -- and I fell even more in love with Guy and Chase. I swear those two can crack me up anytime and they're probably my favorite characters.

“You miss my sarcastic attitude and you know it.”
He rests his head on top of hers and sighs. “I really do. And if I wasn’t gayer than a Christmas sweater, I’d steal you away from this joker in a heartbeat.”

“I don’t want her to go, but I’d never ask her to stay.”
“Why not?”
“Because what if she did? I don’t want to be the reason she’s unhappy. This way, if she ends up miserable, it’ll be your fault.” He grins at me. I groan, knowing he’s right.
“Shit.”
“Yep.”

“Awe, Chase. It’s all right. You’ll still have me.”
Chase rolls his eyes and shifts away from her. “I feel bad enough. You don’t need to make it worse.”

I'm still cold towards Mason's Mom and Kellin, but maybe I'll change my opinion about them in the future. At least I hope Kell will change, because at twelve years old I really expect someone to understand the heavy subjects approached in this series and be supportive for the ones in need.

So this was a great follow-up (or full-up) to Sometimes Never. Short, sweet, funny, but still dark, realistic and emotional. The captivating writing is still here and it will hook you on the spot; the story still gives you goose-bumps and lots of swirling sensations will certainly mess with your head. Plus the steamy romance will have you hyperventilating several times. Loved it and I hope you'll love it too. If you haven't picked up these books yet, what the hell are you waiting on?? They're awesome.

ENJOY! <3

P.S.:
The author is currently writing stories about the other characters?? Seriously?? I couldn't be more happy! So who's gonna be? Chase? Annie? Park? Guy? Kellin? Phew, so many options... YAAAAAAY! Can't wait ;)

Wow... Just wow... I LOVED this novella so much. This is not only the 'filling' part of Sometimes Never between the final chapter and the epilogue, but can also be viewed as a stand alone (although I will suggest to read Sometimes Never first to get the full experience).

I loved every characters in Sometimes Never and this novella is intensifying what I already felt about them.

I will start to my favorite character in this book, Mason Patel. I'm head over heel in love with him. He's such a sweet, cool, humorous, gorgeous guy, the one nobody can resist. He loves Hope fiercely and is willing to do everything to keep her. I have goosebumps reading every declaration of love that he made to Hope.

“I can never get my fill of you. It’s like my body absorbs everything you give me, soaking it up and searching for more. You’re my oxygen—there’s never enough and I will always need you to live.”

“I’ve loved you ever since the moment you kicked Christian Dunkin’s ass. I’ve never stopped and I never will.”

“I want to be close to Mom and Kellin, but honestly, I’d live in a fucking box in a wasteland with Hope and be content.”

Hope Love is another case, while she's still playing this cool smart ass chick which is so loveable without realizing it, there are times when I really want to shake her so hard and remind her of the good things she has in her life. Her insecurity is almost killing me.

Although this is a novella the relationships between the characters are well build and I feel them as intense as they are on Sometimes Never. One of my favorite is the relationship between Hope and Guy. The author build their brother-sisterhood as real and as close as anyone can have. I love Guy and his wittiness. He's just adorable.

“You miss my sarcastic attitude and you know it.”
He rests his head on top of hers and sighs. “I really do. And if I wasn’t gayer than a Christmas sweater, I’d steal you away from this joker in a heartbeat.”
Hope snuggles into him and I don’t ruin their moment with my shitty retort.

For you who already read Sometimes Never, this novella is a MUST read. In my humble opinion this novella is a big part from the book itself. I would prefer to read this after the final chapter from the first book and finish it with the epilogue.

SOMETIMES NEVER & BLACKBIRD by CHERYL McINTYRE

First of all, let me just say that this one of the nicest, passionate & real (in a sense) love stories I’ve ever read. Reading Sometimes Never evokes feelings of love (romantic love) you want to feel inside you. It’s such a beautiful story that it made me cry in the part where Mason needs to leave. To be honest, that part there crossed my mind but I never thought it will be mentioned but it did and it broke my heart. But the good thing is, Cheryl didn’t let me down. ;) I will be soooooooo pissed if in the story other things had happen. Hmf!

Cheryl did a wonderful job in writing a story that will capture anyone’s heart. It did capture mine. And I am proud to say that this story will stay in me forever and I don’t regret reading her book.

Blackbird is a continuation of what happened after their HS graduation and before the epilogue in Sometimes Never. At least that’s what Cheryl tweeted me. :)))

**Blackbird review to follow. I’ll start reading now. Hihihi

Done reading Blackbird. Damn! Cheryl did it again. You made me cry. AGAIN! And like the 1st book, this is as good as the 1st one. She writes beautifully and you feel it, You feel the emotions her characters are feeling and for a writer to do that, it’s a very good thing. I think Blackbird her gift to Sometimes Never readers and I’m happy I got to read it. It’s fantastic and lovely. I couldn’t ask for a better “Book 2” than this. And for that, THANK YOU, Cheryl.

:)

I was quite disappointed by this book. I realy can't undersatnad its purpose. If the idea was to detail what happened to the characters between the end of the first book and its epilogue, how come the book does not end as near as the epilogue scene as possible. Everything written here could and, in my opinion, should have been delivered on the fisrt book.

The characters were shallow and their story was difficult to rely on, since the book didn't present any new information. It only restated that they went to counseling
The gaps of how they coped with their emotional issues and were able to remain a couple and graduate(as portraited on the epilogue of book 1) is not adressed at all. One expects that dealing with anger, be it by cutting oneself or by losing control and getting aggressive, mustn't be something very easy to do. Morevoer, Mason's dilemma of having to choose between Hope and his family was too easily dismissed, and it could have been a nice way to bring drama to the story. Some good characters from the first book were completely forgotten on this one. Guy is barely mentioned. So frustrating....
The author missed the chance to deliver a really awesome story about resilience and the power of love.

It took me forever to realize that BLACKBIRD was Sometimes Never 1,5!! So much time lost without finding out what happened to Hope and Mason after high school! Either way, I'm usually weary of novellas—any afterthought-style book/essay/whatchamacallit written once a book has been published. Just a writer surfing on the waves of success and good fortune, right? Well, not Blackbird.

The problem with Blackbird is that it was easy to read it too fast. I practically inhaled it, both because it was shorter than Sometimes Never, (I know. I shouldn't complain considering its price: $0 on Amazon.) and because the story was so compelling! If you've read Sometimes Never, don't do what I did and wait for months before you read BLACKBIRD. This was like getting the missing chapters.

As usual with Cheryl McIntyre, I got to *feel* something as I read. I admit to having wiped a tear or two for Mason and Hope in the beginning, but during most of it, I couldn't help smiling!

Now, I'm hoping for another free-standing book in this series. Maybe about another one of the band members. How about Chase!!!!!!! :D

Once I was finished with "Sometimes Never", there was no other option but to read Blackbird right away. I was so happy that there was more of Mason and Hope because I certainly wasn't ready to let them go.

I love Hope, really I do, but I wanted to slap her badly for that stunt she pulled on Mason. I'm glad Guy was there to bring her to her senses, like he always does.

Mason is so considerate that I'm still in a state of awe. He knows Hope so well and actually anticipates her freak outs in his planning and luckily none of her freak outs affect him in a negative way while another guy would've already called it quits.

They are just one of these amazing couples and they do actually manage to overcome what their pasts throw at them. It was a lovely journey to read about.

All in all, I was thankful for another glimspe at how these to got to the happy place presented to us in the Epilogue of Sometimes Never, but I'm still not ready to let them go. So I'll just keep hoping that there'll be more, no matter in what form!

Young love - most people think of it a game, but Cheryl McIntyre proves it otherwise. Mason and Hope are a couple of High School grads, trying to keep a relationship strong and steady despite demons of the future (e.g. college) and of the past.

McIntyre shows us in this book that an internal conflict could overwhelm a person and rule his/her life. When you belittle yourself because of who you are and what you have gone through, it makes being loved by someone too elusive to understand. Ultimately, however, love could still prevail and save you from the misery that is you. And no matter how young, love could be true. And when it is, you have no way to go on lest together.

The characters were well-developed and consistent. The plot was realistic. The issues presented were current and relevant. And the sensual romance - it kind of urged me into writing a new book right away! It was THAT good.

Kudos to the author! Thank you for this restful and youthful read. I definitely recommend these to all lovers of romance (a.k.a. everyone).

This was a great novella. I loved reading more about Hope and Mason. It was good to be able to see the time between HS and college. In their actual novel: Sometimes Never, after HS we get the epilogue and her college graduation day. So I loved getting a glimpse of their life during 2 of their years together. I loved the last chapter. Mason was sweet and thoughtful and it just fit perfectly.

I was very proud of Hope. She had demons to work out and she was able to deal very well with her coping methods. She also stood up to someone for her, but mainly Masons benefit, and I loved how it played out in a positive way.

Even though there were a few questions I wanted answered and it skipped big chunks of time, it still had the power to inflict emotions from me. It made me happy, sad, smile, misty eyed and a few times mad. I loved that such a short story like this was able to spark these emotions from me. I think that says something great about the author.

I loved that Sometime Never had an epilogue, but I really wanted more Hope and Mason! WARNING: YOU SHOULD READ SOMETIMES NEVER BEFORE READING BLACKBIRD! Blackbird takes place right where Sometimes Never ended!

Now, having said that...

I really was curious what happened after Mason decided to stay in Ohio. What happened when Hope and Mason started going to counciling? What happened when they went off to college? What about Kellin, Guy, Chase and Park? I missed all the characters I fell in love with. It was nice seeing them again. Sadly, I wanted more than a novella could offer. But I'll try to be patient as I wait for "Untitled (Park's Story)"!!!

I was so happy to see another book with Hope and Mason. It was a perfect novella for them. We get to see more into Mason's struggles and his insecurities. You see that no one and no relationship is perfect just like real life. The one constant thing is they both love each other so much. Hope struggles with feeling why? Why, he chose her to love. He could have anyone he wanted and someone no so flu*k up. He struggles with wanting to be her hero and protect her from the world but knowing he has to hold back so she doesn't shut him out. He finds a happy medium with her at the end. We already know what happens years latter but this was a awesome insight into the years between. Loved it.

5 STARS!

For being a novella it ripped my heart out, but patched it up again.

My favorite Mason lines:
“This is your home. Here. With me. Please don’t leave me, Hope. Please. You’re my whole life and I can’t lose you. Not after…”

“I can never get my fill of you. It’s like my body absorbs everything you give me, soaking it up and searching for more. You’re my oxygen—there’s never enough and I will always need you to live.”

Oh my good God! Mason blew me away. Alternating POVs are always my favorite. And Mason was so hot, he made me drool the whole time! Hope's strength was a prominent highlight. Did I mention how hot Mason was? Oh kay, I better wrap it up before I start about Mason again. Huge distraction!
LOVED the novella! Can't wait for the sequeal. Five staaaars.

I loved Sometimes Never. And I mean LOVED it!! But I was was left wondering what happened in the years between the last chapter and the incredible Epilogue, and I just wasn't ready to let go of Hope and Mason yet, so when I saw there was a Novella based around that time I don't think I've ever one-clicked so quick!!

Blackbird tells us the story of Mason and Hope as they move in to Masons apartment together, where they have fun 'christening' every room and counter-top. Hope feels bad that Mason has became distant from his Mom due to her thinking Hope is unstable and giving Mason the choice of his family or the girl he loves. So hope tries to fix things by applying to a college closer to his Mom and Kellin but this time she chooses pointlessly live alone instead of with Mason. As time goes on Hope struggles with her demons more and more and distances herself from Mason. Don't get me wrong, I understand all that she was going through but Mason would do anything for her and I just wanted to shake some sense in to her.

Though we got to know about Masons troubles in Sometimes Never, we really got a good look at them in Blackbird and saw how he struggled to keep his temper in check which resulted in him using his fists before his brain. I really didn't like Mason' s Mom. She was such a bitch when it came to Hope. Yeah, I get that she was protecting Kell from seeing something she didn't want him to see, but Hope was really trying to fix all her problems; she was having regular counselling sessions and trying to heal the rift between Mason and his family. But his Mom wasn't interested in Hopes troubles. Though maybe it was because if she saw Hope trying to fix her problems then there was no reason why she couldn't try to fix her own. But she didn't want to do that so she did what she does best. She ran.

We also see more from Guy and Chase in Blackbird as they swoop in to save the day when Hope is being an idiot and ends things with Mason. I really do love those boys! They're both so funny and so good to Hope and always looking out for her. Thankfully, everything comes together and we're left with another perfect ending to a fantastic book by Cheryl McIntyre. I loved this story and though I'm be sad to give up Mason and Hope's story, I can't wait to get started on Before Now which is Park's story.

What a perfect glimpse into the time between the final Chapter and the Epilogue of Sometimes Never. True to fashion, Hope gives Mason a run for his money while trying to come to grips with her inner strengths. Mason, ever the strong and constant boyfriend could always find ways to make Hope laugh and show her how much he loves her.

I love their completely imperfect relationship and how they find ways to make it work.

At times, I thought some of the chapters felt a little rushed but then again that could have been me wanting more of Mason and Hope’s story. I had to keep reminding myself that it is a novella. All that said, the book was very entertaining and I truly enjoyed getting a peak into their lives while at college.

Thank you for filing in the blanks from Sometimes Never. Once again Cheryl McIntyre hits a homerun!

Always loved Mason and Hope!

This was a nice little mini story about what happens after Mason decide to stay in Ohio and the first couple of months they spent in college.

Hope's obsession with sweets is still there and I love how she and Mason just seems to click!

It was good to see Guy again, as these characters have always been unique and awesome. I'm also glad that Park wasn't left out. He isn't a bad guy. He was totally blindsided and was in love with Hope ... who wouldn't be!

This was really short, spicy, sweet and to the point in total Hope and Mason fashion. Nothing was under wraps and it was good to see a young couple work things out the way these too and once again, it's always great whenever we get a dose of Guy.

The book Sometimes Never impacted me as I didn't want the story of Hope and Mason to end and this novella picked up their story and let me know that while their love wasn't perfect they stayed together. Mason knew Hope needed counseling and they BOTH went to try to better themselves. They still had flaws to work on and they had to deal with life and college and family issues while keeping their relationship intact. I loved a glimpse of them moving into adulthood and their love is strong enough to endure the curve balls life brings. Thank you, Ms. McIntyre, for two of my all time favorite book characters.
