I did enjoy the whole story of this one - an abused wife running from her sadistic, violent husband to hide in the obscurity of a big city. The abuse side of this was all handled very well, the systematic abuse over the years and the final decision to get away and the execution - all very well handled. There's great world building too - all the scenes lived vividly in my imagination.

It fell down a little for me as I felt I was constantly being told rather than shown what the characters were feeling - too much narrative, not enough reaction. Blaze, although being a fantastic alpha hero, never really did get much time to show how his feelings for Brynn grew - he was just infatuated right from the very first moment he saw her. I'd have preferred to see this aspect of the book expanded.

Brynn runs with her younger sister, Marie, who is at high school and has only been raised by their neglectful, selfish alcoholic mother. To me, Marie sounded like a sage old best friend - she sounded far older than her years.

The abusive ex was really rather too much of a stereotypical bad guy - he's 100% bad, 0% human. I would have liked to have seen his character better developed and understood his motivations better. I think he may have a Norman Bates style mother-fixation but this was never fully explored.

This is the author's debut novel and I think it shows potential and I will try the next book in the series.

I was expecting more from this book. Maybe too much and it didn't deliver. It was not bad, but... I have many issues...

First, I don't get how a woman after 5 years of hell: beatings, rape, mental torture, can even look at another man! How can she even contemplate kissing a man. Not to speak about getting in bed with him... But that's what Brynn does!

She'd escaped, travelled half the country to get to New York with her sister. She's exhausted, but when she sees Blaze in the coffee-shop, she notices him and feels attraction... So not something I think an abused woman will do!
I understand that she's trying to get on with her life, but it was done too quickly! The whole story covers one year and they're happily together with children... Mah... Never heard a seriously abused woman get well so quickly! It would have been much more believable if the story was stretched in time, following the time-line that could have allowed her to heal at a reasonable pace. This way it just felt rushed and not believable!

Blaze too was a bit over-the-line. At first he's tender and gentle, but very soon he's hitting on her heavily! After just a couple of weeks he takes her to his home (this is another thing I didn't get: Brynn going to his house!!!) and get his way with her... He also orders her around; even if it is for her own good, I don't think it was the right path for him to take.

The sex parts: I found them very mechanical. I didn't feel the connection, just the heat. Maybe it was because I had all the above perplexities, but I found them highly improbably.

So, why did I gave it even 3 stars?
Because of Marie and because I want for all the abused women out there to have such an easy recovery and to find a good man for them!

About a year ago my mother-in-law, the lovely woman that she is, bought my husband and me a Nespresso maker. It’s like having your own personal Starbucks at home. Just pop in a little capsule, fill your milk container, add a little sugar, press one tiny button and voila! You’ve got yourself a little sip of heaven. My husband has always been vehemently against coffee in any form. (Yes, I do realize that there must be some major malfunction in the area which should house his brain…) Recently he’s broadened his horizons and stepped into the world of lattes and cappuccinos. At this point you’re wondering what in the name of all things holy this has to do with my book review. When I make him a hot, steaming glass of goodness, I of course, have to make one for myself. Nespresso + Hell, Fire & Freedom = one completely satisfied, overly alert, dark eye circle sporting book-a-holic. I just could not put this book down – not at all. I even found myself reading while attempting to make more coffee!

Trapped isn’t quite the right word; blackmailed might fit the bill a little better. You see, Brynn Langley has been living a nightmare for the past five years. Five years ago Carl promised to send Marie, Brynn’s little sister, and their mother (an unemployed, alcoholic waste of space) food each week while paying their electric bill in exchange for Brynn’s hand in marriage. Oh, and the stipulation that she never sees of speaks to her sister – ever. She finds herself married to the lowest of the low. He’s horrid. We’re talking worse than the gunk you find built up in shower drains – all that old hair and gross moldy shampoo/conditioner mess. I’m shuddering just thinking about it. THAT is Carl. He’s a bully of the worst kind and he’s using Brynn’s sister to keep her as his slave, I mean wife…

I should have seen Carl trying to control me from the beginning as an ominous sign, but I just couldn’t see past the fact that this marriage was going to help keep Marie warm and fed. That was all that mattered in the end, wasn’t it?

One fateful day things begin to look up for Brynn. She’s finally able to make her escape and is even able to bring Brynn along for the ride. The two escapees make their way to NYC. If you can make you can make it anywhere…at least according to Frank Sinatra. Her new life takes an unexpected turn in a small coffeehouse called Frothy Moustache. It’s where she meets Blaze Prescott. A hunk a hunk of burnin’ love – no really, he’s a firefighter. Part of me giggled when I read his name. You have to admit that a firefighter named Blaze is a little corny. Corny in a good way, of course but corny none-the-less. He’s a sexy mess of man and has his sights set on Brynn. She’s a little reluctant at first. Who wouldn’t be? She just came out of the marriage from Hades! As the two get to know each other, Brynn learns just how determined Blaze is to have her as his own. He’ll do ANYTHING to keep her safe.

“I’m sorry, Brynn. I really am. I swear I’m not angry with you. I just… I guess I’m not processing this very well, am I? You are perfection to me, in every sense of the word. You deserve to be cherished, and loved, not beaten and broken. You never have to worry about that with me,” he promises.

As of late, I have had the best book luck ever. I just keep getting winners. When Madison asked me to review Hell, Fire & Freedom, I wasn’t too sure about it. In fact, I spent a good half hour annoying my husband while trying to pick which book I’d like to read next. It’s always hard to move on when you’ve just finished a book that knocks your socks off. I finally settled on this one, and I could not have been happier with my choice. God help the book that follows this one… Eventually I’m gonna land on a stinker – for now, I’ll ride this high.

Hell, Fire & Freedom deals with some tough subject matter; it’s quite possible that you may spring a leak or two while reading this one so have some tissues handy. It’s impossible not to love Brynn and her unbreakable spirit. The love she has for her sister is a thing of beauty. And Shannon’s writing? Yeah, it’s amazing. The girl’s got talent. I can’t wait to see what she comes up with next! You NEED to add this book to your TBR list.

Brynn has suffered abuse from her husband Carl for five long years, so that her sister would be fed and safe. Bryn and her sister grew up poor with a mother who spent all her money on alcohol instead of food. So when Brynn met Carl and he started to take care of Marie Brynn's sister and Brynn, she thought she was in love and agreed to marry Carl and leave. After a particular bad beating Carl comes home with jewelry for Bryn and she knows this is her ticket out.

Frightened but determined Brynn leave and takes her sister with her. Now on the run Bryn knows she has to get as far away from Carl as possible and New York sounds like the right place. When Bryn and Marie land in New York they make their way to a woman's shelter and finally it looks like Brynn and Marie's life is not only looking up but falling into place. When Brynn and Marie visit a restaurant she see's a man that she find very attractive but when he gives her his number she knows that she isn't ready for any man. So when she see's him again and she embarrasses herself she knows her decision is correct and that she needs to focus on her and Marie's life.

When the shelter offers Brynn a job at the restaurant she saw the hot green eyed man she almost turns down the job but instead accepts. Now Brynn see's Blaze all the time he works as a firefighter just down the street, the more she see's him the closer they grow. Till Brynn agrees to a date. It become obvious fast that Brynn's feelings for Blaze are growing stronger the more time they spend together and Blaze makes it known that he cares a great deal for Brynn and Marie. As Brynn's new life moves forward Brynn's ex husband makes it known that he won't go away easily and that he will never forgive Brynn for leaving. With Brynn and Blaze falling in love Brynn has to trust Blaze to not only love but to help keep her safe.

This was a really good story, the beginning of the book was very powerful and accurate. We see what Brynn lives through with Carl not only the physical abuse but the mental abuse and we see how powerless Brynn feels. Shannon doesn't gloss over the ugly and that is part of what made this story so good. We also get to see the struggles Brynn faces learning to love and trust herself and to believe that she is worthy of love while second guessing not only what Carl told her but what her friends, Marie and Blaze tell her now. Blaze was an amazing hero, he loved Brynn with a passion but also knew he had to handle her with care because of her past.

Not only did Shannon Callahan spend time developing Blaze and Brynn's characters but she put as much time into Marie which really showed in this book. I love that we get an epilogue(ahh an author after my own heart), and I love love love that this will be a series with different main characters in each book(see I told you she was after my heart). The writing was good and I'm excited to see how this author grows with her other books. She has me intrigued and wanting to see where this series gowns. So I will definitely be reading the rest of this series. Book two will be about Lana who is very briefly mentioned in the book but is in the epilogue, and book three will be about Marie, Brynn's sister(I'm interested in seeing if Marie is still with the guy she ends up with at the end of this book). I really hope Terry gets his own book, he really has me curious and I wanting his story.

I had the privilege of being asked by Shannon to read and review this book . This is her Debut Novel.

This book was Hot, Suspenseful, You all need to Meet Blaze.

Brynn lives her life married to an abusive husband, all to hopefully give her sister a better life. At the age of 17 she agreed to marry Carl because he promised to provide food and pay the bills for her sister and mother. She lives a secluded life with Carl not allowed to see anyone or have any friends. Carl has been abusive to her since the beginning, but one day he takes things to far and Brynn Decides it is time to get her sister and escape.

I held my breathe through the entire escape, I kept thinking Carl was going to catch her and she would not get away. It was pretty intense.

Brynn sells off her jewelry and gets her sister Marie from school and board a plane to New York. once in New York they find a woman's shelter and they get the help they need to get an apartment, job, and get Marie into school.

Brynn meets Blaze at the local coffee shop and there is a spark there between them. Blaze has fallen and fallen fast for Brynn and he sets out to learn more about her.

Blaze was Hot, sexy, (after all he is a fireman). he was sweet, caring. slowly he builds trust with Brynn and their relationship starts to develop. It is not easy though, Brynn Does not trust men. She is afraid to get close to Blaze, but her body has other ideas.

Shannon did a great job with writing this story, she build up the characters at the same time built up the relationship between Brynn and Blaze. There is an Epilogue, There will be more from the other characters in the book in future books in this series. Marie will get her own Book as well as Lana. I can not wait to read more from Shannon.

If I could give this book more than 5 stars I would!!!!!!

What sold me on this book was the cover. I mean seriously...who can resist a fireman. Just the outfit can make a normal man into a sex god. Unlike some books that don't live up to the promise of their cover I cannot tell you enough how much I adored "Hell, Fire, & Freedom." I feel as if it's been forever since I had a book grab my attention this hard. From page 1 I was enthralled by the character of Brynn. Her strength in the face of all that occurred was amazing. Her will to survive and take care of her family touched my heart. Her story is one that many women suffer in silence and sadly some don't survive it. When all hope is lost people can give up. Brynn doesn't make this choice, she decides to live. To fight for her life and that of her sister and in this act she becomes one of my favorite heroins.

"First timer, huh? You have to try their chocolate peppermint latte and their almond croissant. I swear it will change your life."

These are the words that will change Brynn's life forever. Blaze is everything a reader can want in a hero. He's hot, he's protective, he's a FIREMAN! He's so sexy that he's Mr. August..the hottest month of the year! I've read a lot of books where I have loved the heroin and liked the hero, or liked the heroin and loved the hero, but here Ms. Callahan gives us a hero and a heroin that we not only love but adore! There is not a single aspect of either one of these characters that I did not absolutely adore. Yes they had flaws, it was one of the things that made them so relatable. Nothing was perfect and they made mistakes.

I know it's easy to be hesitant to pay $3.99 for an untried author but I am here to tell you that this book is worth every penny! This book is stand alone with no cliff hanger but there are at least two more books in this series! Think Kristen Proby and the "With Me in Seattle" series! But with FIREMEN! I cannot stress enough about the firemen! I wish I could be more eloquent in this review but it's late and I'm tired. I just loved this book so much that the second I was finished all I could think about was that I needed to post a review ASAP! I hope that everyone enjoys this book as much as I did.

I enjoyed this book. The hero, Blaze is a firefighter that's inherited his father's lucrative personal protection company. He also rides a Harley. So I think the author covered every woman's "oooo spot". But he's a great alpha male, protective, but not overbearing. The heroine is broken, but Blaze is easy to trust. If you like Kristen Ashley book, I think you'd like this books. I love the relationship between sisters in this book as well. Just plain enjoyable.

HELL, FIRE & FREEDOM (Fighting for freedom)

By Shannon Callahan

Brynn married young on the promise that her husband would save her sister Marie from starving. Brynn ended up being stuck in an abusive marriage not allowed to see friends or family and being raped and beaten.

After a really bad beating she decides that she has had enough and picks Marie up from school, sells her jewellery and moves to New York.
Brynn gets help from a local shelter gets a job, an apartment and Marie gets settled into school.

Blaze is a fireman that Brynn meets in a coffee shop and they have a spark. She gradually becomes friends with him and learns to trust him and their relationship deepens.

A really great read that is a little emotional in places and that gives you the female side of domestic abuse. Brynn is a "damaged" character but she overcomes the abuse to start a new life and find love.

Even though this has domestic abuse it isn't a dark read at all. An easily read well written novel that keeps you hooked on to find out the outcome. Well done to Shannon for tackling a way to common and hard to identify problem.

I also want to thank Shannon for allowing me to read and review HELL, FIRE & FREEDOM. I really enjoyed reading it.

I am looking forward to reading Marie's story next.

I am giving it 4 stars for Amazon and 4 stars Goodreads.

Blaze. What a perfect name for a firefighter :D
Great read! The beginning of the book had me hooked, I just had to find out what happened! Carl is the biggest type of bastard, so heart breaking to know what Brynn went through for 5 years! Her story does get better though, mostly due to a certain firefighter.
I really liked the relationship she has with her sister, they absolutely love each other and turned out to be such good people, despite their upbringing.
I definitely recommend this book as one to check out!

This had a really good concept, but I think it fell short.

Physical, sexual, and emotional abuse is a really hard pill to swallow. I think that a woman who'd been raped, degraded, and beaten for five years wouldn't be able to just hop into bed with the first man she sees. Especially one like Blaze.

Within a month of "Dating" (and I use the word dating loosely because really its just him showing up at her place of employment) they start being sexually active. It just seems to unreal to me. I don't know how someone so damaged could just find something that quickly with another man.

Truly Amazing!! Love Blaze..
After not being able to put this book down, I was deeply Sad when it came to an end. It left me wanting more of Blaze and Brynn. It is definitely a must read and then again, and again and again. No woman should have to go through what Brynn and her sister go through I felt very heartbroken for them. When Blaze comes along I just knew things were going to end up the way they did because every woman deserves their true Blaze!
Can't wait to read Lana's Story!!

Overall, I enjoyed Hell, Fire & Freedom. I liked the story of Brynn finally leaving her abusive ex, running away to the city with her sister, falling for the hot fireman. It was a great storyline! I enjoyed how things played out during the entire story.

It was the smaller details and actions that fell a bit flat for me. I would have preferred a little more character development, especially with the ex, I never really understood why he was as abusive as he was. Then the relationship between Brynn and her sister, Marie, was a little off, in my opinion. They hadn't seen each other in five years, but yet they were bff's instantly. Also, Marie was 15/16, but Brynn kept acting like she was 12. It was a bit off putting when Brynn was only 22 herself. And then there was hot Blaze. I liked his character, but I didn't really get to know him or know his feelings for Brynn, it was just instant attraction and no explanation.

I have to say the story was very well written and I think the author has great potential! I'll definitely be reading the next in the series.

Hot damm!!! I love this cover.

In reading this book and writing the review I have to split my review into two categories.

This book deserves 5 stars as it is well written and has an awesome plot as well as a depth and sadness to the story. It deals with abuse and how hard it is get out of it in a relationship (even if you can call it a relationship)
I understand what Brynn did to help her sister but only to a certain extent. Blaze is a man of all women's dreams.

For me personally the book only deserves 3 stars but for the reasoning behind it that it touched me so much that I actually felt the tragedy and the sadness of it all.

I do wish though that in the Epilogue that Brynn did something with her life. College? Just not a waitress?

Huge thank you to the author, I won a copy in a contest; now I'm off to buy book 2 and wait for book 3!
This book tackles real issues regarding domestic violence and all of the gritty aspects and aftermath. Lives are turned upside down and inside out, however, the author shows that not all situations end up the same. Yes everyone's situation is different in severity, and we all want the happy ending, so thank you for that!
I absolutely fell in love with Brynne and Blaze and devoured this book! I loved the connection Brynne had with Marie and then finally accepting the fact that she can love and be loved.

You know that feeling you get when you read a book and you think there couldn't be a more perfect book or story? Yup this book takes you from hell, fire, and freedom. This story made me laugh, cry , and love. I could not put it down. I was still reading it at 5 am, when I finally decided to tear myself away from it.

I liked the story but was not a fan of the writing. I felt like the scenes were not developed enough, they lacked a little of details and descriptions. It seemed too simple and easy, but it didn't keep me from reading the story until the end. I might even try the second book in the future.

Had this series in my kindle for about 5 years.

Right after she left her husband she started lusting after hero. I liked her protectiveness for her sister but she was weak.

Triggers
She’s been abused and raped by her husband during the 5 years of marriage. It’s unclear if hero has been celibate after he met her.

I was given the wonderful privilege of reading this for review by Author Shannon Callahan. I am very excited to assist in spreading the word about Hell, Fire & Freedom.

There is an Author Interview with Shannon Callahan and a Giveaway posted below this Review.

Intense, Sexy and Suspenseful.

Brynn has gone through so much pain, physical and emotional that I couldn't help but want to cry for her. Every time I would discuss this read with my husband, I would start by saying, "Wow". Brynn, gave up her freedom to take care of her younger sister. She agreed to a marriage with the understanding he would provide her family with food.

"I said yes without a second thought, until he added I wasn't permitted to see Ma or Marie again."

Shortly after her marriage with Carl he began the abuse and rape. Brynn, did all she could to keep Carl in a "good" mood. Since when he got upset he would give her a new bruise or possibly a broken bone. Sometimes when he came home he would bring her gifts to apologize for her behavior.

"Its a beautiful heart shaped necklace with a lock in the center.....of course a lock without a key."

At the beginning of this read, I was worried that this was going to be totally sad. But once Brynn decided it was time to regain control of her life, it got intense. I think I was holding my breath during the entire escape portion.

"I don't think he knows it yet, but this lock could become my key."

Brynn with her sister relocate in New York, where they meet gorgeous firefighter Blaze Prescott. Blaze is sexy, strong and protective. I have a thing for men in uniform, so that's a plus.

"First timer, huh? You have to try their chocolate peppermint latte and their almond croissant. I swear it will change your life,"

This read keeps you on your toes. I was completely in "holy poop did that just happen" status for most of the book. There are some pretty sexy scenes, which are all in good taste. Which is another huge plus for me.

Author Shannon Callahan does a great job on the imagery of the scenes and keeping you intrigued But I feel I didn't get a chance to completely fall in love with the relationship of Brynn and Blaze. I am aware of their feelings toward each other and the attraction. But I am left wanting more of their chemistry emotionally aside from the sex.

Hell, Fire & Freedom is about Brynn. She has been living with her abusive husband for years and finally she's had enough. She escapes with her sister and tries to leave him. Of course she then meets a guy. These types of girls always seem to do that. Anyway she meets Blaze, he;'s a firefighter, anyway he's determined to help her.

So what's good and what's bad about this book. The story is nice. It's good to see a woman grow a backbone and leave an abusive relationship. The thing that bothered me most with this book however is that I missed the real reason she suddenly left. There doesn't seem to be one event that made her leave. She just decided she couldn't take it anymore. I can understand that but still missed the reason a little. And that is what I missed throughout the book. The story was good but it could have used a lot more depth to it. Reason could have been explained a lot better making the story more enjoyable too. The characters remained flat throughout the story.

I also got hung up on the male lead. I missed a lot of character with him. I never really warmed up to him. First i had to get over his enormously cheesy name; Blaze for a firefighter. I guess some people might find it cute I just found it annoying. I also couldn't get a grip on his character. Usually when I read a romance novel I fall in love with the male lead a little bit as well. But I never really got to know him or his reasons for loving Brynn.

The story line was good. The beginning was a bit long but it showed the situation Brynn was in. But the ending was way too long. It isn't bad to have a "two months later" or a "year later" or something. It does however get annoying to have several of those in a row. The ending was too long and I think the writer should have chosen only one of the scenarios and favorably not the last one. It was cheesy and just took away a lot of character from Marie (Brynn's sister).

Was it all bad? No there were some good parts of the story too. It was an easy read with a good story line. Could it have been better? Yes. Did I want to stop reading or toss the book out the window in frustration? No. I gave it three stars because it deserved them. It's a nice book if you're looking for an easy read and enjoy a bit of cheesiness.

I absolutly adored this book! It was hot, sexy and NO ONE WAS ANNOYING! As a matter of fact, both the hero and the heroine totally had their shit together and actually made me feel like a proud mother...okay maybe not mother, maybe the hot younger friend of the mother that was totally proud for her friend's kids...
I mean, right off the bat, BAMN! We get hit in the face (both us and the heroine (sadly)) with how great this book is. The author did an outstanding job of writing a book writing about a woman who was a survivor of a horrific childhood and later rape/abuse from her husband. It was written in a way that you felt you were growing with the heroine through her trials of survival. You could tell the author really did her research on crisis survivors.
And DAYUM GINA do not even get me started on the hotness that is so fitfully named Blaze. Whew! I think I constantly was squirming in my seat reading about him and their budding relationship.
The side characters were a great addition and did not take away from anything. I love how the heroine's character did not go in different directions. She was growing as a woman, as a person and didn't waiver. Thats excellent work from the author as sometimes characters tend to do things the author spent chapters making us believe they wouldn't do...so kudos on that author.
Great storyline of the alpha man taking care of his woman and great story line of a woman learning to become a woman who can love, her family and a man.
Can't wait for more from this author!
If you like HEA, no cheating, hot sexy alphaness and a good ol' story of takin it back...this book is for you!

From my first glimpse at this I just had to check it out. All the intensity and danger was what I expected to be a sure sign of excellence. Although, I was very disappointed once I really delved into the story. First, I must say that Brynn was a very impressive character that readers will sympathize with immediately. She is not a whiner, nor is she ridiculously stupid and putting herself in harms way. Actually, she is the opposite and will find anyway to stay in the shadows and safe. So, why would a character such as herself put herself in this position to begin with. Yes, she had nothing. Yes, she was young, but my thoughts are that if you are truly used to scrapping by in the streets as white trash. Wouldn't you know quite a bit about this kind of danger and lifestyle. More importantly wouldn't you be used to seeing these kind of monster's, and not drop yourself in ones lap. Even if I overlooked the fact that she allowed herself to say in this dangerous situation; I still have to look at the later stories relationship. While Blaze is a good guy if you have spent years getting the crap beat out of you I just don't feel that you are going to be so accepting of a guy. Most importantly here, I don't see you having a relationship that you follow the man lead again.

This was by no means a terrible story, but I just think it needed a little more work to have been enjoyable, adventurous, and realistic. It takes all of these components to make an amazing story, and I think this author has tremendous potential.

****EROTICA BOOK CLUB REVIEW****

What a pleasant surprise.. I finished it one sitting, and no I didn't get frustrated with any of the characters and that is a hugeeee plus!

The heroine Brynn has been living with a monster for the past few years, married to him, being raped and physcially and verbally abused by him just so she can have her teenage sister fed. Yes, her mother is an alcoholic who can't feed her, so she had to marry this monster so he can put weekly groceries on her sister's table, but that's where it sort of ends, she isn't allowed contact with them or anything.. He beats her, abuses her in all forms, and she has no choice but to put up with it, until one day she snaps and runs.. picks her sister up and they run to NY.. With the help of a woman's shelter, she gets housing, a job, and all types of help. That's where she meets hottie fire fighter Blaze.. Blaze is just the perfect human you could possibly meet, but our heroine has so many trust issues you don't know where to start.. A beautiful emotional story!

The story developed slowly, which I wasn't expecting considering the subject matter. Further, I was expecting a romantic suspense story, and while those elements are present it really felt more about the heroine story of overcoming abuse. It was good at what it did, but it wasn't what I was expecting. I also had issues with how easily and quickly she overcome the abuse of her past to move into a physical relationship with a dominant male. I also didn't understand some of the hero's decisions considering his ownership of a security company. At the same time, I enjoyed the book and will probably read the rest of the series. I liked the characters and by the end of the book, I was hooked. I'd give it an extra half-star for that intangible connection alone.
