Many literary critics rate him among the greatest authors of world literature and consider multiple books written by him to be highly influential masterpieces. They consider his Notes from Underground of the first existentialist literature. He is also well regarded as a philosopher and theologian.

"Bijedni ljudi", epistolarni roman i njegov prvi roman uopće, nije mi ostavio dojam kao mnoga kasnija njegova djela, vjerovatno stoga, što sam imao viša očekivanja budući da je sam autor postavio najviše standarde. Sve u svemu, Dostojevski, ali početnik.
"Dvojnik" je novela koju zaista nisam imao strpljenja pročitati do kraja.
"Gospodin Proharčin" je novela koja je tada kada je napisana, dobila očajne kritike od najeminentijeg Petrogradskog književnog kritičara (zaboravih kako se zvao), ali u meni je proizvela potpuno drukčiji učinak. Pored mnogih novela ovog autora, koje mi se uopće ne sviđaju, ova mi je prokrčila put kao možda najkompletnija. Čak sam se i dobro nasmijao.
