Meh. Reads like a masters thesis and the author seemed to forget to finish writing it. Mildly entertaining but wasn’t worth the effort in my mind.

Мені загалом сподобалося, багато дізнався про ранній розважальний інтернет. В книзі, насправді, найбільше уваги приділено саме цьому, а не котикам, проте я отримав задоволення. Переклад дуже слабкий, втім, за ним було легко уявити оригінальний текст.

"Nobody is certain when cats first arrived in Japan. Cats appear in the 11th-century text The Tale of Genji—the world’s first novel, written by the court lady Murasaki Shikibu. In the novel, when a court lady rebuffs the affections of a man of the court, he steals her cat and displaces his feelings for her onto the cat, making it a fetish object. In this instance, the cat straightforwardly stands in for female genitalia—the man even has a dream about romancing the cat—but the Japanese language doesn’t have a pun that connects genitalia and cats directly, as many European languages do. Cats may have come to Japan along trade routes that led to Egypt or China; they may have been aristocratic gifts, or they may have accompanied monks who wanted to protect their silk scrolls from mice."

Could have been better, but still pretty decent. Lots of references that seem sometimes more thrilling than the book itself. Not a big fan of nonfiction anyway, but a fan of cats, so the review seems balanced :-)

Read in 12 hours. So good! So hilarious, I love that someone has created a whole book on this. I like how this book focuses much more on the early internet than current meme culture, so I felt like I was actually learning something. For example, I had never heard of most of the cats mentioned in this (besides grumpy cat duh) which I was surprised about. also LOLCATS? I never knew that official name of that style of meme, so awesome to know the history. Also the text lead me to this website which I enjoy https://icanhas.cheezburger.com/ ... LOL. (cats).
The theory is super easy to read, although I felt like the book could have been twice as long in order to solidify some of its theoretical ideas. Here's an example of the writing:
"When in 2016 the word pussy became unexpectedly a political keyword, the media quickly capitalized on the double meaning of the word: the New York Daily News printed the word in enormous letters on its front page, obscuring the middle letters with the seemingly astonished faces of cats.19 The visual pun was a recognition that the word’s connotation of sexuality, its coloring of obscenity, and the low esteem in which popular culture has held the pussy, so to speak, are tied together."
I bolded the second half of the quote because that is about as intense the theory goes in the book, IMO, and I really enjoyed that it wasn't too difficult to read because I'm currently reading so much dense theory in my classes.
I'm on a deep dive currently learning about the history of cats and their connection to queer culture for a personal/school probably project, so I was hoping it would be more about cats. But I was actually FASCINATED by the descriptions of the early internet. I've been really wanting to find some more niche websites/blogs that feel like the early internet... so if anyone is still readings this review HMU if you know of any!! Probably any that end in a .html lol .

Купила няшну книгу з котиком на обкладинці та котиками в кожному заголовку 😸
А в результаті читала про хакерів, перші онлайнові субкультури, американські чати, становлення Usenet, вплив японізмів у США та тролів, які насправді не просто розважаються, а ще вибудовують кордони між “ми” та “вони”.
Коротше, якщо хочете читати про котиків, то краще повірте застереженню авторки, що “ця книжка не про котів, а радше про інтернет” та що “якщо цій книжці щось і вдасться, то це створити наратив навколо соціальної стратифікації в інтернеті”. Ну наратив вона навряд чи створила, а от про матюкливих тролів я начиталась аж до нудоти.
І от, з одного боку, це перша нон-фікшн книга за дуже довгий час, яку я проковтнула за 2 дні (з однозначною перевагою у вигляді приміток на 25 сторінках). З іншого, мене постійно відштовхувала її сумбурність і фрагментарність. А тому замість “теорії” я отримала набір цікавинок з амплітудою від японських емодзі до вподобань американських домогосподарок 90-х років. З сильно зіжмаканим кінцем, де майже нічого особливого не було про сучасність.
Ну і різниця культур дається взнаки. Наприклад, з 2012 року ми, на думку авторки, живемо в еру котів-зірок, чиї імена стали відомими на весь інтернет. Але я, як трушна українська котофілка, гуглила майже всіх перелічених – знала добре лише Мару та Сердиту Кицю. Але хто ж знав, що Сердита Киця - це імʼя?)) Не така вже й універсальна її теорія виходить
