Edith Whartonová (1862-1937), držitelka prestižní Pulitzerovy ceny, je právem označována za první dámu americké strašidelné povídky. Třebaže tento žánr tvoří jen pramalou část její tvorby, autorka v něm vytvořila dílo impozantních kvalit. Především je spojovacím článkem mezi gotickou tradicí americké ghost story a moderní hororovou povídkou, v němž jsou gotické prvky rafinovaně vtěleny do kulis současnosti - moderních domů, aut, rozhlasu, ale i podnikatelského způsobu myšlení či frivolnosti ve vztazích mezi muži a ženami. Proč jsou povídky Whartonové stále moderní, jako by je autorka napsala včera a ne před více než 80 lety? Jsou strašidelné, jistě, ale jsou víc než to, daleko spíše strachuplné, jsou více o strachu - iracionálním a všudypřítomném - než o strašidlech. A povídky Whartonové jsou plné obav - obav z plíživé nemoci, ze smrti, z temnoty za zdmi našeho domova, obav z druhého, obav z toho, že každý náš vztah zůstane vposledku nejasný a nenaplněný. A ještě jednomu autorčinu mistrovství se můžeme obdivovat: její povídky jsou završené začasté nečekaným finále, jak se na tento žánr sluší, a přesto zůstávají dvojznačné, těžko vyložitelné, takže se k nim čtenáři vracejí znovu a znovu. Tento výbor přináší v češtině vůbec poprvé v jednom svazku to nejlepší, co Whartonová v tomto žánru vytvořila.

Was there any kind of story Edith Wharton couldn't write better than her old buddy Henry James?

Not in my experience. Here she outdoes him in the ghost story stakes with a chilling little tale about a secretary waylaid into spending the night with a young man suffering from tuberculosis and his wealthy industrialist uncle.

The secretary is spooked by a malevolent vision which only he can see, and in his fear he becomes the unwitting agent of an evil design.

Wharton doesn't explain the meaning behind the apparition, but you can join the dots easily enough.

Like The Shining, it's sure to give you the willies on a snowy winter's night.

A young man on his way to a new job as a woman’s secretary is waylaid by a snowstorm and taken in by a rich neighbor and his nephew for the night. While there, he witnesses the nephew’s will, for it is his birthday and he has just come into his inheritance from his deceased father. The secretary has a bad feeling about the scene and sees a ghost, of sorts, that looks exactly like the uncle but more menacing. The apparition shows up again at dinner and the secretary flees the house, out into the snowstorm. The nephew follows after him and his constitution is not what it once was since his bout with tuberculosis and he dies. The secretary has PTSD and is sent abroad for rest. While there, he comes across old newspapers that show that the uncle was being accused of fraud and his company was in trouble. But, a few days later, after the nephew’s death, the uncle is flush again and pumping money into his failing company. The secretary now realizes that the ghostly apparition was the man’s true intentions showing through and that he certainly killed his nephew for his inheritance.

Novela publicada em 1916, foi minha primeira experiência da autora, da qual quero ler seu premiado "A Era da Inocência."

Vou aqui deixar um resumo à qual recorrerei para me lembrar da história:
Um jovem (George Faxon) a caminho de um novo emprego como secretário de uma mulher é surpreendido por uma tempestade de neve e acolhido por um vizinho rico (John Lavington) e seu sobrinho (Frank Rainer) para passar a noite. Enquanto estava lá, ele testemunha o testamento do sobrinho, pois é seu aniversário e ele acaba de receber sua herança de seu falecido pai. O secretário tem um mau pressentimento sobre a cena e vê um fantasma, de certa forma, que se parece exatamente com o tio, mas mais ameaçador. A aparição aparece novamente no jantar e o secretário foge da casa, para a tempestade de neve. O sobrinho o segue e sua constituição não é mais a mesma desde sua luta contra a tuberculose e ele morre. O secretário tem estresse pós traumático e é enviado para o exterior para descansar. Enquanto estava lá, ele se depara com jornais velhos que mostram que o tio estava sendo acusado de fraude e sua empresa estava em apuros. Mas, alguns dias depois, após a morte do sobrinho, o tio está rico novamente e injetando dinheiro em sua empresa falida. A secretária agora percebe que a aparição fantasmagórica era a verdadeira intenção do homem, revelando-se, e que ele certamente matou seu sobrinho para ficar com sua herança.

O que mais gostei foi a ambientação, sinistra e sombria. Uma mansão isolada, numa noite gélida em meio a uma tempestade de neve... Cheguei a sentir frio.

Triumf noci je prvý výber Whartonovej poviedok, ktorý v češtine vyšiel a zároveň prináša to najlepšie, čo Whartonová v tomto žánri vytvorila. Ak sa radi ponoríte do ríše tajomna neočakávaných situácií a viete oceniť klasickú literatúru a majstrovskú štylistiku, Triumf noci bude pre vás kniha ako stvorená.

Not quite a ghost story. This is a quiet, subtle tale of destruction and premonition. Something is haunting George Foxon. He feels the unease, but does not understand the warning vision, so he takes off into the the fearful cold which has dire consequences. This is available in 'The Ghost Stories Of Edith Wharton'. It is also available on youtube.

The more I read of Edith Wharton's work, the more I like her writing. Many people I've spoken to have said they hated reading her in high school, but I either haven't read the story they were assigned or they were too young to understand what lies beneath the surface.

Ten autor se sice rád literárně babrá v otázkách nadpřirozena, ale zatím nedospěl ani na práh svého námětu. Kdybych si měla vybrat mezi věžatými hrady s cimbuřím, kde obcházejí bezhlavé oběti s řinčícími řetězy, a útulným předměstským domkem s ledničkou a ústředním topením, místo, kde bych, jakmile vejdu, cítila, že je tu něco v nepořádku, tak jsem vždycky pro tu druhou možnost: tam mě pořádně zamrazí! A jen tak mimochodem, nevšimli jste si, že duchy obyčejně nevídají nervní lidé s fantazií, ale věční kliďasové, kteří na ně nevěří a k tomu jsou přesvědčení, že by jim vůbec nevadilo, kdyby nějakého potkali?“ (Dušičky od Edith Whartonovej)

Edith Whartonová, popredná americká spisovateľka kvalitných moderných hororových príbehov 20. storočia a držiteľka prestížnej Pulitzerovej ceny, predstavuje aj dnes neodolateľnú a šarmantnú knižnú zábavu pre dlhé jesenné sychravé večery, ktoré sa oplatí tráviť v spoločnosti teplej deky, aromatického čierneho čaju a strach naháňajúcich preludov. Čaro jej rozmanitej poviedkovej tvorby ani po jej smrti nestratilo na svojej kvalite a hoci ubehlo od tejto smutnej udalosti takmer 76 rokov, Edith Whartonová, prvá lady anglo-amerických ghost stories, vás dokáže aj zo záhrobia presvedčiť o tom, že ak siahnete po akejkoľvek jej strašidelnej historke, budete sa báť až do špiku kostí.

Nakladateľstvo Plus (Albatros Media a.s.) prinieslo v roku 2012 na slovenské a české knižné pulty zbierku Strašidelných príbehov od Henryho Jamesa, ktorá práve milovníkom dobrej duchárskej literatúry vyčarila úsmev na tvári. A ani nie o rok neskôr sa rozhodlo pokračovať v dobre zabehnutej tradícií a čitateľom (aj tým menej a aj tým viac náročným) prináša až 10 krátkych hororových poviedok pod názvom Triumf noci tento raz však od ženskej autorky, ktorá zodvihla latku kvality tohto žánru poriadne vysoko.

O Edith Whartonovej sa obyčajne zvykne hovoriť, že patrí k výrazným osobnostiam svojej doby. Napriek tomu, že väčšinu svojho detstva strávila pripútaná k lôžku a so strachom zo strašidelných knižiek, dokázala vniesť do hororového žánra, ktorý začal svoju púť práve pri Edgarovi Allanovi Poovi, nezabudnuteľne príťažlivú modernú podobu. A tá tak trošku časom stereotypné viktoriánske sídla a obyvateľov v nich okorenila poriadnou dávkou nového spoločenského rozmeru. Zatiaľ čo väčšina jej rovesníkov – spisovateľov (napr. už raz spomínaný Henry James) riešila otázky existencie, príp. neexistencie duchov a viery v nich, Edith Whartonová problematiku sveta duchov doplnila o ezoterický a magicko-náboženský formát či napínavý rozprávačský postup. Napriek tomu, že sa aj ona výrazne zamýšľa nad tým, ako sa isté nepredvídateľné a tajuplné situácie dokážu nami vnímať a po čom všetkom sme ochotní siahnuť, aby sme ich racionálne zdôvodnili, nevtieravo a prirodzene nám podsúva svoj názor, že: „... člověk by měl prostě své strašidelné historky podat co nejméně přikrášlenými slovy a „ostatní ponechat přírodě“, protože vypravěč nadpřirozených příběhů by měl při vyprávění sám pociťovat náležitý děs. Pak možná dokáže svým čtenářům sdělit onen pocit čehosi divného a cizího, o čem se nesnilo ani Horáciově filozofii“ (Edith Whartonová, předmluva).

O výber poviedok do Triumfu noci sa postaral „výbor ze strašidelných povídek“, ktorý vsadil na Whartonovej tematickú rozmanitosť a typologickú pestrosť, takže každý jeden príbeh, ktorý sa vám do rúk dostane, tvorí samostatný uzavretý unikátny celok plný všelijakých fantastických mrazivých príhod vo farbistom prostredí s nádychom zašlej viktoriánskej éry. Statické prostredie, ktoré rozprávanie vsádza do ťaživej gotickej atmosféry pánskych honosných sídiel, Whartonová odľahčuje na prvý pohľad úplne stereotypným vzťahom medzi hlavnými aktérmi. Obyčajne ide o postavy vzdialených príbuzných, služobníctva, roztopašných pánov a dám z vysokej spoločnosti, ktorých ťaží vlastné imanie či stratené roky mladosti, ale aj o tuctových podomových obchodníkov, ktorí sa akýmsi nedopatrením ocitli vo víre neuveriteľných situácií, či o manželské dvojice bažiace po vlastnom duchovi. Avšak postupne, tak ako si príbeh sám plynie, odhaľuje Whartonová pravý zámer svojej strašidelnej historky. Takže to, čo sa nám na prvý pohľad zdalo byť niečím jednoduchým, priamočiarym a predvídateľným, naberá kontúry premyslene zosnovanej zápletky, ktorá si ani zďaleka nebude pokojne plávať v oceáne ľudského strachu. Edith Whartonová vás citlivo a nebadane lapí do vlastnej pavučiny snov. A tie vás nielen slušne vystrašia, ale aj prinútia dumať nad tým, či aj vy ste len tak náhodou toho svojho ducha už raz nestretli.

Okrem obyčajných duchárskych historiek, točiacich sa okolo duší zosnulých, ktoré pre nejakú špecifickú príčinu odmietajú opustiť miesto, v ktorom umreli alebo čoskoro umrú (Zvonek na komornou, Později a Triumf noci), ponúka vám zbierka Edith Whartonovej aj také príhody, ktoré sú neodmysliteľne späté či už s násilnou históriou konkrétneho pánskeho sídla (Pan Jones a Kerfol), alebo so schopnosťou predvídať vlastnú smrť (Oči). Samozrejme, zostavovatelia zbierky mysleli aj na čitateľov, ktorí sa sem-tam radi zasmejú (Slečna Mary Pasková) alebo majú v obľube jemne romantizujúce rozprávania o spolunažívaní si dvoch spriaznených duší, z ktorých sa jedna stále nedokáže zmieriť s trpkou príchuťou vlastnej minulosti (Zrnko granátového jablka). A pre tých najnáročnejších si pripravili pútavú mystickú poviedku pod príznačným názvom Dušičky, ktorá nielenže výber krátkych hororových próz z rozsiahlej tvorby prvej lady anglo-amerických ghost stories úderne uzatvára, ale ponúka vám i možnosť vstúpiť do sveta mŕtvych a zažiť zimomriavky prinášajúci nadprirodzený zážitok priamo na vlastnej koži. Či tak trošku prehodnotiť váš doterajší postoj k prichádzajúcemu dňu všetkých svätých, ktorý by ste nemali stráviť v akomkoľvek obydlí z viktoriánskej éry. Teda v prípade, že sa vám v predvečer „Dušičiek“ pošťastí stretnúť... (Ha! Už sa bojíte?)

Edith Whartonová, predchodkyňa Elizabeth Bowenovej a nasledovníčka Mary Eleanor Wilkinsovej-Freemanovej, sa narodila v roku 1862 a písaniu sa venovala prakticky od útleho veku. Napriek tomu, že jej literárny fond tvoria úplne jednoduché príbehy, príhody či historky, vyniká medzi všetkými známymi aj menej známymi anglosaskými autormi duchárskych príbehov 20. storočia svojou invenciou, ľudským rozmerom a nepopierateľnou originalitou. Je teda len a len na vás, či jej príbehom aj uveríte, alebo ich zaslúžene oceníte a vyčleníte pre jej tvorbu čestné miesto vo svojich malých – veľkých, hranatých – oválnych, súkromných – verejných, za to však vždy pestrých knižniciach!

„Nebyl tam nikdo. Aspoň jsem nikoho neviděl.“
„To je neobvyklé! Doslova nikoho?“
„Nikoho, jen spoustu psů – celou smečku. Zdálo se, že jim to tam patří.“
Madame Lanrivainová nechala výšivku sklouznout do klína a ruce složila na ni. Několik minut ne mě zamyšleně hleděla.
„Smečku psů – vy jste je viděl?“
„Jestli jsem je viděl? Neviděl jsem nic jiného!“
„Kolik jich bylo?“ ztišila hlas. „Vždycky jsem byla zvědavá -“
Překvapeně jsem se na ni podíval: domníval jsem se, že to tam zná. „Vy jste v Kerfolu nikdy nebyla?“ zeptal jsem se.
„Ale ano, častokrát. Ale nikdy ne tohoto dne.“

Poznámka autorky textu: Súčasťou zbierky 10 hororových poviedok je aj rozsiahla štúdia od Aleny Dvořákovej, ktorá čitateľom ponúka komplexný rozbor zverejnených prozaických textov od Edith Whartonovej. Niektorými recenzentmi je väčšinou označovaná za „zdĺhavé a málo podnetné nadbytočné čítanie“, ktoré si však dovolíme odporučiť. A to aj z toho poetického dôvodu, že pár slov o tom, ako Edith Whartonová svoje strašidelné historky vytvorila, čím všetkým sa inšpirovala a po čom všetkom siahla, aby ste sa aj vy mohli spolu s ňou príjemne báť, je celkom obohacujúcim zážitkom pre každého duchárskeho knihomoľa :).

My standard in this genre is, naturally, The Turn of the Screw by Henry James, and I expected Wharton to come closer to that benchmark than she does here. Her writing chops, knack for suggestion and keen eye for allusion is on display for 95% of the story. Then she writes an awkward, clunker of an ending that made me feel like someone put a gun to her head and told her to finish it in ten minutes.

If that was, in fact, what happened, then she did as much as you could expect.

But the forward doesn't mention her being held hostage, so 3.5 stars.

Another will written adventure thriller short story by Edith Wharton about a young man 🚹 an orphan raise by his mothers bother and the issues and adventure he goes though in his daily life. I would recommend this novella to readers looking for a quick read. Enjoy the adventure of reading 👓 or listening 🎶 to Alexa as I do because of health issues. 2022 😢🗽

I've read this as part of the edition mapping various classic horror authors. This is classic problem with anthologies, you get great things, often with also some garbage. Same goes for this book. Some stories, especially from start were missing the point. Anyway I tried to understand them, it felt strange, like ending should have few more paragraph, some, on the other hand, were too explanatory. But there were some good stories, with great atmosphere of old england houses, filled with heavy curtains, heavy wooden furniture and more or less visible ghosts. These were fun to read, so not total waste of time at the end.

This is a very effective and creepy story first published in 1914 that works it's effects on the reader in a psychological way much like Henry James's classic, THE TURN OF THE SCREW.

Wharton believed that a supernatural story should "send a cold shiver down one's spine", but she did not resort to the conventional uses of ghosts and the spirit world.

THE TRIUMPH OF NIGHT is a triumph of storytelling.

"The Triumph of Night" is a short story, first published in 1916.

Set in a Siberian-like American winter, Mr Faxon is left stranded at a railway station, where he meets Frank Rainer. Rainer takes Faxon with him to his uncle's house. From here the story takes on a psychological and supernatural turn.

This is my first experience of Edith Wharton's writing and I am impressed.
