Rate this book
Mystery, Romance, and Suspense Seamlessly Combined in a Mennonite Small-Town Setting

Callie Hoffman knows she has a good life in Kingdom, Kansas. She's thrilled to be engaged to Levi Housler, the new pastor of Kingdom Mennonite Church, and she spends her days working with her friend and soon-to-be sister-in-law, Lizzie Housler, at Cora's Cafe.

However, Callie's idyllic life is interrupted when a body is discovered on the road outside Kingdom and the deceased turns out to be a victim of a serial killer. As Washington County's new sheriff begins questioning Kingdom residents, Callie and the rest of the town are appalled at the prospect of a killer among them. The very reason Kingdom exists is to protect the people from the temptations and dangers of the outside world, but all the town founders' attempts to plan ahead couldn't prevent a threat like this.

Unsettled at this unforeseen danger, Callie is concerned when it appears Levi knows more than he's telling. Desperate to find answers for herself, Callie never expected that she'd have to face some of her own past's skeletons.

As Callie and the residents of Kingdom fear this danger for which they never planned, they must learn anew that only God knows the future and their trust must always lie in Him.

I’m at a loss here. Such high-rated reviews. I just don’t understand it.

The book is supposed to be a mystery with suspense. There was little to no suspense. It was all forced. The "mystery" plot has to do with murders in a Mennonite community, but there's not enough of this plot to make a whole book, so contrived tensions are added to fill in space: severe storms, two accidents, a lung issue, emotional problems because of a strict father, and a absentee parent returning.

Granted, the ending was a surprise, but it felt more like, "Hm...let’s see...who can we throw in as the murderer to make everyone gasp?"

Well, it's squeaky clean, so there's that. Parents may not have a problem with their 5th graders reading it. There are some faith issues I appreciated as well.

On a good note:
Unforeseeable was written a few (7+) years ago. But truly, this author has written some terrific books lately. Her recent suspense stories were 5 stars for me!

Review:
Another amazing Book in the Road to Kingdom Series by Nancy!!

This book was about Callie whose friend was killed by a serial killer in Amish Country Kansa and throughout the book several characters are mentioned as the possible serial killer but toward the end it shocks you cause i didnt expect him to be the killer.

The Plot Setting and Characters kept me on the edge of my seat til the very end!!

Even tho this book is listed as a Romantic Suspense, it should be listed as a Mystery, Suspense, Thriller cause it gives you those genre vibes!!

I do wish this series would continue but i can see why it ended with this book!! Can't wait to read more by Nancy in the future!!

Not only did the topic of this book knock me back on my heels but I was surprised by the ending!!!

Okay, so I called one thing, suspected another but then thought “nah” before suspecting it again, and totally didn’t see the third thing coming!!!

The theme of this book is worth. Callie doubts the love of those around her because of her past and the questions she has to work through or that are posed to her by others really hit home for me. I haven’t dealt with what Callie lived through but circumstances make it hard for me to trust people.

I ended up liking this series and these people more than I expected. They aren’t the most amazing books ever but they are good and they have excellent topics that are explored.

MY THOUGHTS ON THIS BOOK

Unforseeable is the third trip back to the little Mennonite town of Kingdom, Kansas where Levi is the pastor and his fiancee Callie Hoffman lives in the small town as well. Usually a quiet little town, a body is found on the road just outside Kingdom and the town’s residents are being questioned. Could the killer be living among them?

I love this series so much and hate to see its ending. I fell in love with these characters as well as their town of Kingdom. As the sherriff and others in the community tries to find the murderer, I was in there right along with them. I love a good suspense, and this one was intense enough that it kept me biting my nails throughout as I wanted to help the sweet people of this town. I love stories I can feel a part of, and this one sure does that.

Another thing with this story is the way author Nancy Mehl weaves faith of her characters into this story, and it’s done in a most subtle way, just as we as Christian’s live our lives today. If you love a good clean suspense story where murder falls into a Mennonite community, you need to check this one out, and yes it’s been a few years since it has been released, but this book, along with the first two books in this series is just as good now as it was back then. And I hope you enjoy just as much as I did.

A special thanks to the author/publisher for a copy of this book. I am not required to write a positive review, the opinions here are mine alone. I am disclosing this with my review in accordance with the Federal Trade Commission’s 16 CFR, Part 255.

Unforseeable is the third and final book of the Mennonite series set in Kingdom, Kansas, a town formed just for people belonging to the Mennonite church in the town. They are separated from the rest of the world and anyone moving there has to get approval from the church pastor and elders. Church members are at a time of transition where some members are solely of the Old Order legalistic beliefs while others take a view of a loving God who sees what is inside a person's heart as more important than if they are behaving or dressing as the earthly church demands. Some also are beginning to believe that one is to live in the world and witness to others about their faith rather than to live separated from the world as Kingdom is set apart.

This is the story of newly engaged Levi Housler and Callie Hoffman. In the first book, we met Noah, Levi's brother and Lizzie, who owns Cora's Corner Cafe where Callie works. Noah and Lizzie are now married. Levi has recently been elected as the pastor after Pastor Mendenhall and his wife left to join a church in another town. Callie has been taking care of her father as well as helping in a school in Kingdom and working with Lizzie at the cafe. Callie's father passed away a few months ago so she is now living in the upstairs part of the cafe and working all the time at the cafe. Callie's mother left years ago and she was raised by her father. She has issues of low self esteem and insecurity and has lived her life as her father dictated. Lizzie begins to encourage Callie to recognize personality traits she has that have been caused by her strict and abusive father, something that Callie buried deep inside. As she begins to remember her childhood, Callie begins to question what her own beliefs and feelings are rather than what was demanded by her father.

Someone is killing women and leaving them on the outskirts of town and it appears to be the work of a serial killer from twenty years earlier. The person quit killing and the crimes were never solved. It is believed by the sheriff from a nearby town of Washington and the Kansas Bureau of Investigation that something triggered the killer to start up killing again. It appears that it could be someone living in Kingdom and because of something at the crime scene, Levi is suspected at first. That is quickly dismissed for a plethora of reasons.

This is a suspenseful story of a town living in fear knowing that someone is out there killing women and is complicated by two snowstorms that hit Kingdom and knock out power and phone service. Most residents don't have either but it causes a sense of helplessness to a situation of fear to be snowed in with a killer loose. Could it be someone in the town? Different people appear to be guilty. Levi, as pastor, counsels church members and Callie is afraid that someone may have told him something that he should tell the sheriff. As Callie and Lizzie try to figure out who is committing the crimes, I am trying to figure it out as well. We are taken through twists and turn to a surprise ending. The town of Kingdom seems like a real rural town with real characters and I am sorry to see the series end. It seems that it could go on with more books. All of the books have not only great suspense but all have characters with flaws that they have to work through with faith in God and His leadership. I recommend reading the books in order.

"Unforeseeable" is the third in Nancy Mehl's Road to Kingdom series and is just as fascinating as her first two books. As the story opens death hangs in the air; a body has been found on the outskirts of Kingdom. The new Sheriff Brodie Timmons has begun to question the town's residents which has an unsettling effect especially on Callie Hoffman who fears a serial killer might be lurking in the shadows around Lizzie Housler's restaurant where she lives alone in an apartment above. This exciting story not only probes into the mysterious murder, but revolves around the lives of Kingdom's residents especially Callie and her fiancée Levi Housler.

Into the core of a plot that centers around murder and betrayal are woven elements of romance, forgiveness, and redemption. Into the fabric of this well-written story with its smooth and natural writing style are strong messages like not judging others, finding God's purpose in our lives and rising above fear.

Many of the characters from Nancy Mehl's two earlier novels have returned; the hardworking, kind -hearted Lizzie Housler, her affable husband Noah, her irascible father Matthew, and the humble, devoted Mennonite Pastor, Levi Housler. Add to these the warm-hearted, soul searching Callie Hoffman, Esther Hoffman haunted by her past mistakes, and Bud Gruber who hides a sinister purpose behind a congenial personality. All these characters and more add to a novel that keeps the reader enthralled from the first page to the last.

Like all Nancy Mehl's books I thoroughly enjoyed this one, and look forward to reading more about the town of Kingdom.

What An Ending!

I've dried my tears so now I can see to write my review. If you haven't read any of Nancy Mehl's books I highly recommend that you do. I promise that you will never be disappointed. This author is one of my favorites.

Unforeseeable is the last book of this series, Road To Kingdom. I loved the first two books Inescapable and Unbreakable. Was it possible that I would love this book as well? Not only did I love it, I believe in my opinion it was the best one. Why you might ask? Because this book brought closure to many of the characters in the first two books. I loved the suspense! I loved the mystery! I loved the romance! I fell in love with the characters.

I actually felt like I was living in Kingdom while reading this. I was so caught up in some of the scenes that if I would have been a nail biter, I wouldn't have any nails left! I was so drawn in and riveted to every word.

My emotions ran high in this book. Fear and anxiety in many cases, laughter and tears in some scenes.

Author Nancy Mehl brings out a message in this book too. For me, it was to fully trust and rely on God, that He is definitely in control. Another thought is, we have choices of our own to make in life and not choices because of what others have taught us or expect us to make.

I can't wait to read more books by this great author!

I received this book from the publisher in exchange for my honest review. The opinions in this book are mine alone. Thank you Bethany House and author Nancy Mehl.

Amazing Mennonite Suspense!
5 stars!

In Unforeseeable, author Nancy Mehl once again takes us to the quaint Mennonite town of Kingdom, with its cozy café, quilt shops, knee-deep, snow covered landscape, and the deep rapport of townsfolk. But soon an unforeseeable enemy hovers over Kingdom, creating a shadow of evil over this once peaceful community.

Callie Homan is engaged to the young, Mennonite pastor of Kingdom, Levi, and works in the town's quaint café with her best friend, Lizzie. Callie has painful childhood memories that she has kept buried deep within, causing her to have self doubts and a lack of confidence. She has always done what everyone has expected of her, even down to her relationship with God. Soon she even questions Levi's motives for proposing to her. Callie and her friends are terrified to be alone when the sheriff reveals that a serial killer is on the loose, just as a disastrous snowstorm blows into town. Can Levi and her friend, Lizzie, save her from herself and the murderer as well? Will Callie discover who she really is, and find God for herself?

Nancy Mehl is a master of suspense, and I could barely put this one down until I found out whodunit! But underlying the suspense is also a wonderful, tender story of God's inner healing of an abused young woman that brought tears to my eyes. If you love a novel with non-stop, heartracing excitement, twists and turns, and romance---this is definitely the book for you!

Unforeseeable is the third installment in the Road to Kingdom series. I have really enjoyed the suspense and developing relationships in these stories.

In Unforeseeable, we follow Callie and Levi's relationship. Levi has just been named the new pastor for Kingdom. He is young and is facing some opposition from certain members of the community.

Callie has recently lost her father and become engaged to Levi. Callie is uncertain about a lot of things in her life. In this book, we learn more about the cause behind this uncertainty.

In Unforeseeable, the citizens of Kingdom learn that there is a serial killer loose. This killer used to kill twenty years ago. After a hiatus, he is back and his reach is extending into Kingdom.

Will Callie and her friends be able to figure out the identity of the killer? Who will be his next target? Will Callie determine the desires of her heart? Is she following God or just following in the customs of her father?

This is an excellent addition to the Kingdom series. I received a complimentary copy of Unforeseeable from Bethany House in exchange for an honest review, which I have given.

Always enjoy Amish books because they talk a lot about faith and God and it makes me ponder how I am fairing in that category. Callie's desire to find out who she was was very thought provoking. Do I do the things I do because that is the way my parents taught me or by what people expect of me? That's why I think this book had a great ending with Callie and Levi leaving Kingdom to go to another parish that wasn't so strict and see where they fit into life. It was pretty intense when Callie is at Lizzie and Noah's hurt and Bud is there talking about murdering all those other women. It was a surprise when Roger saved the day but also confessed that he had killed his wife. Callie talked him into giving her the gun and he did. The town of Kingdom was going to reach out to him while he was in prison. That's one very special thing about Amish people - they all know each other and take care of each other no matter how hard things seem to be. Great lifestyle but I'd have a hard time with no electricity!

I thought this was a better book than the previous two. Over here, the focus was on Callie and how she rediscovered herself, although it really wasn't nearly as deep as I would have liked it. The mystery here is a side focus. So, if you're looking at this book as a mystery read then you're mistaken. The mystery is really just the plot point required to move things along in the book. The end (like another reviewer said) was hastily thrown about without deliberating much on why it happened. The previous two books were very heavy on religion which made it a little difficult to separate it from the story and the characters. But this one spent a good amount of time on Callie and how she explored her own past. It was a good read.

I got an ARC from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

A good read. Several twists and turns. Callie Hoffman has a good life in Kingdom, Kansas and is engaged to Levi Housler, the new pastor of the Mennonite Church. She works at the local restaurant. Then things change. A body is found on the road outside Kingdom and is the victim of a serial killer. Does Kingdom have a serial killer living there or nearby? Then Callie has to face some of her past and deal with previous baggage. Will she be able to move past this baggage and move on with her life? Will her life involve Levi and staying in Kingdom? Or will the killer get her first?

Levi has been chosen as the new pastor in this Mennonites community, he is unusually young, at thirty to be chosen.Several of the elders had quit over disputes. Callie now engaged to Levi notices a change, more serious, doesn’t lsugh as much, they have postponed the wedding twice. Even her age at twenty two, was she too young for the responsibility she would have.
Cora’s Cafe was a meeting place, and the men are concerned they may a killer there or close, and wanted to protect the women and their community
More about the talks of the happenings and not much into the mystery side.

An amazing book.

Nancy has such a way with story telling and with teaching the Word. Callie and Levi became engaged, but their marriage was postponed twice. Then the revelation to Callie that she was living in a dream world. Then a serial killer and a series of tragedies, and a knowledge that God wants us to be true to the life he created us to live. I definitely recommend this book.

My first Nancy Mehl read was the 2018 published “Mind Games” and I thought it was great! Decided to try some of her earlier works. For what it’s worth, the writing, storyline, dialogue, characters - everything, is vastly better in her last novel. Might go back a couple of books but won’t be reading anymore of the earliest stories. Based on “Mind Games”, she’s definitely found her stride!

The best in this series. This a much gentler series than the Kaely Quinn books. There was still mystery, but relationships and character development play center stage.

I'll be honest up front that romantic suspense is not my preferred genre, but I'm trying to be as objective as I can with this review. I enjoy regular suspense, though, so I am familiar with suspense techniques.

With some series, each book is a stand-alone and, while you might miss a few references here and there, you'll follow what's said without a problem. I don't think that's true with this one. There are many passing references at the beginning of this book to people and events from the previous two so if the reader hasn't read both of them, they'll feel a bit lost. (I know because I started with this book, but felt I was missing a lot so I ended up reading the others before I came back to this one.) If the reader has read both of the first two books, then the beginning part of this book will make sense.

In my opinion, this is the weakest of the three books in this series in regards both to plot and to the love relationship. I think both of those elements were much stronger in book two than either of the others.

Overall with the series, the suspense and plot elements have peaks and valleys, but it seems more valleys than peaks. There are moments of tension/fear, just not nearly enough to maintain an underlying sense of suspense. With the gravity of the crime (murder) among such a sheltered community, it seems there would be more concern by the characters for their well-being.

With this book in particular, it was a little too obvious that the author had a message she wanted to drive home, and it didn't seem to grow organically from the character or plot. Yes, it coordinated with it, but it took me as a reader out of the story.

The ending was not at all a surprise to me, but I guess it might be to some readers. It had more impact than the ending from the first book, but not as much as the second book. As someone who is used to non-romantic suspense, the plot was a bit contrived.

As for the relationship aspect of this one, the conflict between the two romantic characters didn't seem great enough to propel the storyline. Callie comes across as immature and a bit petty.

So, would I recommend this book? It depends on what you want out of a book. If you're the kind of reader who is totally focused on the relationship between the two romantic characters and plot doesn't matter, you'll find this a good (not great) read. If you need a logical, interesting plot, you might want to check out a different book.

Oh, and I just have to say, are there massive, violent snowstorms all the time in Kansas? From these books, apparently so.

The best part of the Road to Kingdom Series by best selling author - Nancy Mehl has been the unique blending of two of my favorite genre's to create something unforgettable in each of the novels that keeps me coming back for more. In this series of novels Nancy has taken your typical Christian Amish Fiction and twisted it so seamlessly with a great suspense murder, you think this is how all novels should be written. I think you shouldn't be able to tell the genre's apart and I think Nancy has created a unique nichè that is all her own.

While Unforeseeable is the third and final novel in the series, you can definitely pick this one up and read it as a stand alone and still gain the appreciation that fans from the beginning have experienced along the way. Callie Hoffman is the owner of town's cafè and works alongside her soon to be sister-in-law, Lizzie Housler. She is anticipating her upcoming wedding to the newly elected pastor, Levi Housler, Lizzie's brother, but some in the town of Kingdom believe he is far too young to take on the responsibilities of leading the church.

When the body of a woman is found just outside of town, soon the true nightmare begins. The sheriff comes to the local town gathering in the cafè to inform the residents that he believes that a serial killer has once again emerged and has begun to take his killing spree into the heart of Kingdom. He advises all women to make sure that they are with someone and never to venture outside alone. Pretty soon, like most small towns gossip gets the best of people and fingers are pointed into who may be the killer living among the small town of Kingdom. Just when you think you have it figured out, Nancy spins the tale into a completely different direction and soon you'll be left wondering just who is it and how many more lives of the women living in Kingdom will be claimed to the person responsible for committing the crimes just as a monstrous blizzard makes a direct path into town.

I received Unforeseeable by Nancy Mehl compliments of Bethany House Publishers and Christian Fiction Blog Alliance for my honest review. I have not received any monetary compensation for a favorable review. By far, this is my favorite of all three books in the series. Not only have I gotten the chance to know each of the main characters in the previous novels, I absolutely loved the elements that Nancy has twisted together to make this one work and compel me to finish the final page before setting it down. That to me, is a sign of a great book. I give this one a 5 out of 5 stars in my personal opinion.

"Unforeseeable" by Nancy Mehl gets five stars from me.

'Unforeseeable" is the third and final book in the "Road To Kingdom Series" and it is my favorite book in the series! With that being said, I wish there were others books coming in this series.

There is a serial killer in town. Callie is engaged to the new Mennonite pastor, Levi and he falls under suspicious. And Levi knows something but won't tell Callie. And Callie wonders if Levi is only marrying her to fulfilled the requirement that pastors are married.

Callie's begins to remember things from her past that she has blocked from her memories and begins to question "Who Am I really"

There is a new women in town, and there is something about her that has Callie afraid!

This book certainly had me fooled on who the bad guy(s) was or were! There are twists and turns in this story that kept me turning the pages to see how it all ended up

In ending this review I want to include some of life’s important life Callie learned and it applies to us readers as well.
On page 146 “ No matter what happens around us, we can rest in the joy inside our hearts. The fruit of the Spirit is alive in us. We just need to allow it to overpower our circumstances.”
On Page 222-223 “ Callie, a lot of people never find the people God created them to be. They’re too busy trying to live up to other people’s expectations, or they try to create themselves in the image of a person they admire or envy. Just because we respect someone or think their life might be more exciting than ours doesn’t mean God created us to be just like them. Sometimes we have to ignore the people in our lives so we can hear the voice of God.” “ That sounds rather selfish. Aren’t we supposed to prefer others before ourselves?” “Sure. But making a decision to put someone else first out of love isn’t there same thing as putting them first out of fear. Because you’re afraid they won’t love you if you don’t act the way they might want you to.”
On page 287 “ I’m beginning to see that we can’t substitute God for certain clothes, rules, church, or even towns. I’m not saying any of those things are bad, but I’m realizing that things and places don’t make us holy or safe. And they certainly don’t define us.”

I was really surprised to see these truths applied to this fictional story. That is what makes this such a great story, it has truth and fiction, and the ending isn’t want I expected either. This entire series is just fantastic.

Nancy has once again kept me right on the edge of my seat!

Unforeseeable is the third and final installment of the Road to Kingdom series. Even though it is the third book it certainly can be read as a stand alone. Although I would recommend reading Inescapable and Unbreakable first so that you can become familiar with the characters who live in this unique mid-western town.

Callie Hoffman and Levi Housler take center stage as Unforeseeable opens. Levi has just been elected to be the church's pastor, and is facing a trial by those who feel he is far to young to serve their communities needs.

Callie, who has been taking care of her father though his long illness, is grieving his recent death. She is also newly engaged to Levi, and is working for her soon to be sister-in-law Lizzie Housler, at Cora's Corner Café. But adjusting to all of these changes isn't easy for her, especially after one of her conversations with Lizzie caused her to realize that she has always conformed to who others think she should be. Now she needs to learn how God sees her instead.

When the body of a woman is discovered on the road leading into Kingdom, a town meeting is held at the Café. This is where the local sheriff informs them that he believes a serial killer has re-emerged after twenty years and may be responsible for the heinous act. The women of the town are told not to go out alone. And, as you might expect, worry causes imaginations to take flight, causing the people to begin to look at each other with suspicion.

Will Callie and her friends be able to figure out the identity of the killer? Who will be next? Will Callie learn who she is in God's eyes? Is she following God, or just conforming to who she thinks people expects her be?

Nancy has once again kept me right on the edge of my seat as the plot thickened with the addition of some new characters and a huge blizzard that blanketed the Town of Kingdom.

I have enjoyed getting to know the people who live in Kingdom and am sad that the series has come to an end. But according to Nancy Mehl's July newsletter, we will meet some of them again on the streets of Sanctuary which is the new town in her new series, Finding Sanctuary, which begins with Gathering Shadows.

There are women turning up dead and while the people of Kingdom know they have to be careful, none have happened to anyone they know or near Kingdom. That changes when two bodies are discovered on the road leading into Kingdom and then one body of a woman they know, she was raised in Kingdom and had left years ago to get married, her husband is now a deputy sheriff. Things are coming too close for comfort.

Not only is it getting closer, Callie Hoffman and others are letting their minds run wild and suspecting some of their close friends and neighbors. When Levi Housler's book about the Anabaptist Martyrs was discovered on the body of one woman people do a lot of talking and wondering. Levi is the new pastor of Kingdom Mennonite Church and Callie's bethrothed.

Callie has been going through some personal problems and Levi has been busy with a lot of counseling so they haven't been able to spend a lot of time together and they both seem to be changing. When Levi's book is found and he seems to be keeping a secret Callie has suspicions, and he isn't the only one she suspects.

This series only got better as I read it, this was a great book with more than one mysterious thing going on. I would encourage you to read these books in order to get the full story, you won't be disappointed. Nancy did a fantastic job on this whole series.

I had my own little mystery going on with this book, kind of, lol. I read it on my Kindle because I got it from Net Galley and for some reason any word that had double "f's" in it was missing the letters. Most of the time I automatically put them in as I was reading but sometimes they didn't appear "in my mind", lol and I would find myself trying to figure out the word, then I'd laugh and say to myself, "Oh, yeah, that is 'diicult', 'stuing', or 'o', get the idea, lol, difficult, stuffing, or off. I still really enjoyed the book!

I have been delighted to follow this entire trilogy of Nancy Mehl's Kingom series. The first two books were very enjoyable and I loved learning about Mennonite communities. I did not realize that there were such communities where you couldn't live unless approved by the Mennonites. It seemed a rather archaic concept to me in today's world, but obviously there is truth in it.

As book three, Unforeseeable got underway, it wasn't long before Callie instead of endearing herself to me as I felt she should have, I found myself being rather "put-out" by her insecurities and inconsistencies. But folks are like that sometimes whether we like it or not.

I thoroughly enjoyed getting a bit more of Noah's and Lizzy's (and Charity's) stories. And then Noah's brother, Levi played a major role in Unforeseeable as the very youthful, unmarried pastor of the Mennonite church and the betrothed of Callie. Levi's character was strong and steadfast and held true to his pastoral role in the community.

But as with other Nancy Mehl stories, this one is complete with mystery, danger, and suspense. I was not expecting the outcome of the murder with the guilty party being exposed. Nor was I expecting the twist in one branch or twig of the mystery.

Nancy wrote an exciting and very descriptive scene when Levi and Callie were stranded during the storm. I won't say more, but you'll find it replete with controversy for setting, the weather playing a major role in their danger, unexpected "attack" that seriously hurt Callie and Levi with much blood flowing. Then the following snow-bound scenes and wreck with resultant injuries. Let's just say that the severe winter storm brought lots of action.

I have found that in many of the "bonnet" books, there are a lot of unnecessary conversations involving meddling and opinions in which "normal" folks simply do not indulge. I wonder if that is the norm for Mennonites, Amish, and others of the bonnet persuasion, or is it a tool of authors of this genre to picture them as "involved family and friends." As usual Nancy Mehl has written a good book.
