Change is brewing for Lily Lapp. Her favorite cousin, Hannah, moves away and Harvey Hershberger, a boy with a talent for trouble, moves right in. Harvey's antics stir up the entire schoolhouse, and his fondness for Lily gets under Aaron Yoder's skin. Add in a mischievous dog rescued by Lily's brother, an old Shawnee Indian and a mother bear, and a secret Lily's mother is keeping, and you've got a recipe for laughter, love, and big surprises.
Girls ages 8 to 12 will love navigating the changes in Lily's world with her in this final book in the sweetly simple Adventures of Lily Lapp series.

First sentence: All morning, Lily hurried to pull weeds in the garden.

A Surprise for Lily is the fourth and final book in the series by Mary Ann Kinsinger and Suzanne Woods Fisher. I knew going into it that it was the last--but it was still sad to come to the end.
Lily Lapp has matured so much since the first book. Now she's in fifth grade and experiencing the highs and lows of growing up. She's still struggling with a few of her classmates; but she's doing it with a certain amount of grace and dignity. Most of the time.

It is just a treat to spend time with the whole Lapp-Miller family. I love them all. I even love to "hate" a few of the characters. (Think Nellie Oleson.)

I think it would be awesome if the authors decided to write a young adult or even adult series starring an older Lily. Just enough time has passed--in the real world--for Lily to mature into a young woman who might just be interested in boys and courting and marriage and settling down. Would Aaron Yoder still be a PEST and NUISANCE? Part of me really wants these two to get together.

A Surprise for Lily ~ Book 4, The Adventures of Lily Lapp, by Mary Ann Kinsinger and Suzanne Woods Fisher, ©2013

Lily Lapp, now in fifth grade and growing up fast, faces many changes including old friends leaving and new ones coming, the election of a new bishop, and a wedding. Includes facts about the Amish faith and way of life.

Ages 8 to 12, will enjoy reading the further adventures of Lily Lapp in A Surprise for Lily. But... no matter the age, you are going to love these little chapter books in the series. Fun! In Book 4, there are 29 chapters and "Questions about the Amish" which is very interesting too. It reminds me of the Little House books that talk about how they live and interact within the family and those nearby. The illustrations are the best!

It is a warm August day. Lily has finished pulling weeds in the garden and is on her way to her cousin Hannah's. The girls help can peaches and are excited about having a fun afternoon together.

They didn't tell anyone where they were going
or what they were going to do
because they didn't know they were going to do it
until they did it.

Thankfully they get rescued!

Mama's gardening boot is missing. She says she doesn't mind going to the garden without it but... not to the sweet corn patch with all the rocks. "And.. snakes," Lily thinks.

Lily and her brother, Joseph, go after the boot snatcher.
They are led into an old abandoned train tunnel
beyond the woods.

Company is coming! Mama fixes a picnic lunch and they go for an outing. They make a rescue!

A puppy!

Many adventures follow as Lily begins school. They will be having a new English teacher.

Changes come as the days continue. The Lapps get a new buggy horse so Jim doesn't have to climb the hills and back down again. That Effie Kauffman again is teasing Lily telling her Jim is going to the glue factory, not to new owners to a nice farm to rest.

Read A Surprise for Lily to find out the best surprise of all!

Oh, I love the dedications in the front!! From Suzanne ~ To my new little granddaughter, Kaitlyn Paige, my first. I've been waiting for you! And from Mary Ann ~ To my four children each of you have brought so much joy into my life. ~*~ a book a child, Mary Ann! Sweet.

In the first three books in the series The Adventures of Lily Lapp, we've seen young Lily experience many life events - daily struggles, happiness of being a little girl growing up in a happy home, sadness at inevitable life events, good friends and bad friends, good adults and adults that behave poorly. And in A Surprise for Lily, book four, as a fifth grader she experiences more of the same and then more new choices and events come her way, too.

The book starts out with Lily and best friend Hannah getting in a rowboat and pushing off into the middle of the pond. Well, that ends up poorly. But it is a lesson learned just as many lessons are learned by Lily each day.

They discover a lost puppy and give him a home. The Amish tend to care much for animals and are certain that their needs are met. Little Dozer, the puppy, brings joy to the children in the Lapp household.

As Lily continues to endure the poor attitude and actions another little girl in the community, Effie, she learns valuable lessons in right and wrong behavior. She also learns from one of the boys who continues to be the bane of her existence, Aaron Yoder. She learns he is not all bad and he has some pretty good traits.

I have lots of grand children, and I have grand daughters, a 9-year old and a 7-year old, that wait excitedly for each new Lily Lapp book to come out. I know book four will not disappoint them. Just as Lily has learned lessons, my grand daughters learn lessons. They learn from Lily's mishaps and joys as well.

Again, I highly recommend The Adventures of Lily Lapp. If you haven't acquired the first three books, you can read book four as a stand alone. But I highly recommend the entire series.

The delightful sage of an eleven-year-old Amish girl continues in A SURPRISE FOR LILY, the fourth installment in the Adventures of Lily Lapp Series by authors Suzanne Woods Fisher and Mary Ann Kinsinger.

While Lily wants things to stay just as they are, life has a way of changing no matter what. This time around she’s faced with a new school teacher, her cousin and best friend moving away, triumphs and tragedies in her family, and changes in her schoolmates. In addition, the family learns you can’t always trust what another promises but lessons can be learned from it.

Lily faces each new challenge with the love and faith of her family. She comes to realize people can change and a crazy mutt of a dog can be a hero. Lily biggest surprise comes with a new addition or two to her family she never expected.

A SURPRISE FOR LILY is an enchanting story that teaches youngsters the way of the Amish showing the similarities and differences. The story is a quick read that flows smoothly and is told from Lily’s point of view. In addition, the authors have included a short section answering questions about the Amish that will help explain some of the activities in the story.

The book is geared toward youngsters ages 8 to 12, but can be enjoyed by all ages. Older youngsters can read the adventures on their own, while the book is divided into chapters that make for easy bedtime reading to younger children. In addition, there are several beautiful pencil sketches throughout the book that highlight various aspects of the story.

This is the fourth installment in the series, but can be read as a stand alone. However, reading the series in order gives a better look at the Amish way of life and the exciting adventures Lily has encountered growing up.

A SURPRISE FOR LILY is a heartwarming story of family, love, faith and friendship as seen through the eyes of a young girl. An irresistible read from a compelling series.

FTC Full Disclosure - I requested this book as part of a blog tour and it was sent to me by the publisher in hopes I would review it. However, receiving the complimentary copy did not influence my review.

A Surprise for Lily
The Adventures of Lily Lapp #4
By Mary Ann Kinsinger
and Suzanne Woods Fisher

Life keeps changing as Lily constantly discovers and through it all she learns some valuable lessons. There are adventures with a new puppy and a new teacher. But there are also some losses that Lily has to deal with - Grandpa Lapp dies, Cousin Hannah moves away, and a friend has a house fire.

But Teacher Judith isn't like Teacher Rhoda and Lily is lucky to have Mama help her with her English lessons. When Mama, Papa, Dannie, and Paul go to a wedding a case of chicken pox sends Lily and Joseph to Grandma and Grandpa Miller's for several weeks. And Lily has more cooking dis-as-tahs.

When Cousin Hannah moves away a new family moves into their home the Hershbergers and they have a son a year older than Lily and Harvey may be worse than Aaron Yoder! And Teacher Judith doesn't do anything to make Harvey behave. But changes are coming when Mama starts teaching English a couple of days a week. And an even bigger change is coming, a surprise that Lily never expected.

Lily and the Lapp family are like old friends that you'll be glad to revisit in this fourth installment in the Adventures of Lily Lapp. As Lily grows up her family keeps growing and Lily learns to deal with the changes. A Surprise for Lily just like the entire Lily Lapp series is perfect book for family reading time. Start a new tradition or add a new series to an old one as you laugh and cry with Lily and the Lapp family!

Little brothers, bothersome dogs, angry bears, new friends, lessons in sharing, and injuries all add up to A Surprise for Lily that you don't want to miss. Effie Kauffman and Aaron Yoder are back making Lily's life miserable, or are they.

A SURPRISE FOR LILY by Mary Ann Kinsinger and Suzanne Woods Fisher is an interesting Young Readers (Amish) ages 8-12 years of age. Set in the Amish country of Pennsylvania. #4 in "The Adventures of Lily Lapp", but can be read as a stand alone. Although, I would suggest reading the other three in the series. See,"Life with Lily","A New Home for Lily", and "A Big Year for Lily". A simple look at the Amish life through the eyes of eleven-year old Lily Lapp and her friends. Lily's surprise is very heartwarming. This has been an exciting adventure for not just the characters but for readers also. The team of Mary Ann Kinsinger and Suzanne Woods Fisher is superb! They are both talented! The characters are enduring and their storyline intriguing. Rather you are young or old you will not be disappointed in the "Adventures of Lily Lapp". This series reminds me a little of "Little House on the Prairie" with Lily as Laura Ingalls, and the mischief maker Effie, as Nellie Olsen.
"A Surprise for Lily" is the final installment in "The Adventures of Lily Lapp" and I kinda hate to see it end. If you only encourage your Young Reader to read a series this summer let it be "The Adventures of Lily Lapp" you will not regret your choice of reading material. Received for an honest review from the publisher.

Title: A SURPRISE FOR LILY
Authors: Mary Ann Kinsinger and Suzanne Woods Fisher
Publisher: Revell

ISBN: 978-0-8007-2135-0
Genre: Young adult/Amish

Change is in the air!

Eleven-year-old Lily Lapp wants her life to stay just the way it is. Instead, it's constantly changing. New jobs, new schoolmates, and new challenges sure keep life interesting. It seems like the only thing Lily really wants to change--Effie Kauffman's mischief making--is the one thing that never does. Effie is up to her old tricks, and Lily is her favorite target.

With each chapter in Lily's life comes another ever-more exciting adventure. But no one could have prepared Lily for the biggest surprise of all!

A SURPRISE FOR LILY is book four in Ms. Woods and Kinsinger’s popular Amish series The Adventures of Lily Lapp. Readers will want to read the books in order as they are continuing events in young Lily’s life. Books are: Life with Lily, A New Home for Lily, and A Big Year for Lily.

The series is geared for tweener girls, and my daughter absolutely loves these books. As soon as one arrives in the mail, she snags it.

This is what my daughter says about A SURPRISE FOR LILY. “I really liked it because the surprise is really huge. It’s a fun book. Lily manages to find trouble and it gets real exciting at times.”

Recommended for tween girls or fans of Amish fiction of any age. $12.99. 272 pages.

Co-authors Mary Ann Kinsinger and Suzanne Woods Fisher bring to conclusion the series of four books in the life of young Lily. Lily is Amish and a precocious little girl whose antics get her in trouble as she grows and learns and who faces life circumstances akin to all young girls.

Book four, A Surprise for Lily, has Lily’s beloved cousin, Hannah, moving. Lily is 11 years old now and facing more responsibilities and changes. As in the other three books in the series, the Amish life experience pictures a simple life-style with the absence of many conveniences and comforts the rest of the world knows. But they are for the most part a happy, content group of people. Folks whose religious beliefs are the guiding force in all they do.

They are a group of people who come together as a community and help one another through various experiences and sadness.

Lily experiences a classmate, Effie, that is still up to mean tricks and who makes life in the classroom and community hard for Lily. And then, too, the boy in the classroom, Aaron, continues to trouble her. But change has to come.

Young girls will enjoy this entire series.

How I love reading these books, and this one did not disappoint. A fast read [to fast for me], with something new happening in each chapter.
Our Lily is growing up, this story takes place while she is a fifth grader. Of course her nemesis Effie Kauffman is still here along with Aaron Yoder, and another new boy to tease her.
I would recommend reading these books in order, but it is a book you could pick up as a stand alone. The story has a few sad, life events, that Lily and her family have to live through. There are also some very happy joyful things that happen. We have a few surprises for Lily, but there is one very big one.
The books are for 8 to 12 year old, but my 6 year old boy seems to enjoy having me read the chapters. This is supposed to be the last book in the series, I sure hope not. I can picture Lily growing up with a family of her own. If it turns out to be true, I guess my minds ending will have to be.
Don't miss this great children's book, reminds me of the Grandma's Attic series.

This was a good book. Lilly is back! She and a new friend are up to all sorts of mischief. There are rescues, a puppy, and many more adventures. Some friends leave, new friends arrive, and Lily is center stage for all of it!

I loved the roller coaster of the story, just one thing right after the other. Seeing all the characters interacting and the old characters mixed with the new was amazing. The author did a wonderful job again with Lily. I know it is written for young girls but it is a story that I enjoyed as well.

I rate this a 4/5. It can be a stand alone but reading the others in the series is better.

These books are geared towards the younger readers but I still get a good laugh out of them. I guess you could say that I am still a kid at heart. Lily is like Punky Brewster. She is full of mischief and always finds herself in sticky situations that make for entertaining reading.

Every adventure that Lily finds herself in puts a smile on my face. I enjoyed some adventures more than others. I have grown to love Lily and her family. It is like I am an adopted part of the family. Besides what I have already stated about why I like these books, another reason is all the different people that I meet reading these books.

Mary Ann and Suzanne make a good writing team. They have really found their stride with these books. You can not tell where one left off and the next one picked up. This book although the fourth one can be read as a stand alone novel.

Each of the Lily Lapp books has been better than the previous one, and this is no exception. I read it in one evening, resting on the couch in front of the fire, enjoying a book as cozy as my surroundings.

Lily Lapp, now eleven years old, is growing up. She still gets into trouble, however, and the book begins with Lily and her cousin Hannah, both non-swimmers, rowing a boat into the middle of a pond and falling out. Lily’s life goes on from there, full of unpredictable adventures. At school, Effie Kaufman is as bothersome as ever, a new family moves in, and a new teacher brings unexpected upheaval into Lily’s world.

I received this book free to review from Netgalley. I have not read the others in the series, but this one seems fine as a stand alone book. I think it is great for elementary school aged children. It is a bit like the Little House books and follows an Amish girl, Lily, who is 11 years old and in 6th grade in this book. She has many adventures including a rowboat mishap, a new school teacher, rescuing a puppy, and other adventures in the daily lives of Amish children. I enjoyed the book and think children will enjoy it too.

This is an awesome book, showing the lives of an amish family as they start to grow. Lilly has some good and bad adventures with some happy and scary feelings. The Lilly Lapp books are one of the best amish books I have read so far, and I think I have read about every one! I need to read more about Lilly's life I hope she makes more!!!!!!:)
