There are times when I feel like pinching myself to make sure I’m not dreaming…
I enjoyed working in the corporate world for more than twenty years as a Human Resources executive, but it doesn’t compare to what I’m doing now. For the past several years I’ve been privileged to teach Bible study classes in Bible Study Fellowship (BSF) and in my church.
And I write. I write. Those two words have opened an amazing world for me as God has set my feet on a new path – a second career I never dreamed attainable.
It began 15 years ago with a short story published in Chicken Soup for the Soul. That story was the first of more than 30 stories published in anthologies, including 25 Chicken Soup for the Soul books. From there, I published articles in Christian magazines such as Today's Christian Woman, Light & Life, The Lookout, and Focus on the Family’s Clubhouse Magazine.
I’m the author of Daily Reflections on the Names of God: A Devotional (Baker/Revell). And I’m humbled to say Kay Arthur, founder of Precept Ministries, Int’l., has endorsed it.
I’ve also co-authored a children’s picture book series, Faith Basics for Kids (Standard Publishing). The first two books in the series are Do You Love Me More? and Will I See You Today?
If you’re looking for a speaker, I love to speak and teach, engaging audiences with relevant, enjoyable presentations.
Daily Reflections on the Names of God by Ava Pennington has been a wonderful addition to my quiet time devotions. I purchased it in 2011 under its previous title (One Year Alone with God: 366 Devotions on the Names of God), and have been enriched by it every day since then. I especially like the format used in this book, as the author states, "As the multiple facets of a cut diamond combine to reflect its brilliance, the names and attributes of God combine to reveal the transcendence of His nature and the glory of His ways." She explores 122 names and attributes of God in three ways. In the first devotional for each name or attribute, the author has the reader "look up" to see how and why God describes Himself the way He does. In the second devotional for each name, she has us "look in," as we focus on how the particular name or characteristic applies to our lives, and how it changes or strengthens out relationship with God. Finally, in the third devotional for each name or attribute, the author encourages the reader to "look out," as we apply what we are learning about God and ourselves to our relationships with others. I have found looking at these three facets of each name or attribute adds great depth and quality as I look up the Scriptures, pray God's word, and journal my responses. This is one devotional that will find its place in your heart, not your bookshelf.
“What is your understand of who God is and how He works? Is it a biblical perspective, or have you been molding your understanding of God to fit your desires and expectations? If your perspective is not biblical, then it’s time to look at who God says He is and how God says He works.” (Daily Reflections On The Names Of God – Introduction – page 9)
Daily Reflections on the Names of God is a great devotional, that I have added to my quiet time. Unlike many devotionals, it is not dated and it has a great topical index to help you through whatever might be going on in your life.
In the introduction, there is a key for each devotion by a clever use of “arrows”. As we read a devotional, are we looking up, looking in or looking out to indicate where the devotion is focusing on? Each of the 366 days contains a bible reading, an explanation/study, a short prayer and thoughts to ponder for the day to learn who God is according to how He revealed Himself in His Word.
I would highly recommend this book to anyone that wants to dig deeper into God’s words and His promised for us.
I received this book through The Book Club Network (http://www.bookfun.org/) for my honest review, which I have given.
I had the privilege to read Daily Reflections on the Names of God by Ava Pennington. I have to admit, I’ve been praying for the past few months that God would show me the right book to read because I have been interested in learning more about all of God’s names. And this is how He answered! What a great answer. I love how she spends three days on each name - way to dig deeper into each and every name that God has. The first day she explains why God describes Himself the way He does. The second day she shows us how each particular name applies to our own lives, and the third day she helps us see how that particular name applies to us reaching out to others. It’s better than I could have asked for. But isn’t that just like God? I sincerely ask Him a humble request, to learn more about Him, and He blesses me with more than I dreamed. Thank you, Ava, for responding to God’s voice to write this devotional and thank you, Bookfun.org to bless me with allowing me the chance to read and review this book.
Daily Reflections on the name of God by Ava Pennington This is a great devotional that I have added to my daily reading plan. It is dedicated to the attributes and characteristics of the names of God. The author devotes three days to each name. On the first day we discover how and why He is called that particular name. The second day she teaches us how it can be applied to us, and the third day is dedicated to finding how the name or attribute affects our relationship with God. To me not only is this a devotional, I found it to be a great teaching tool. I especially enjoy the questions after each devotion. It has been a great help to get me to think harder about what I have just read. I give this book five stars, it is very informative and well put together. I want to thank the author and publisher for bringing Christian devotional books like this one to readers like me. I would also like to thank The Book Club Network Inc. for providing me with this book in exchange for my honest review.
Excellent devotional! I’ve loved reading this devotional on the names of God! It is not dated, so you may begin it any time during the year. I really enjoy how Ms. Pennington chose to do the devotional for each day. There is a scripture reference to look up, then a couple paragraphs applying what you’ve read, then a prayer, and finally a question to consider throughout your day. Probably my favorite aspect of the devotions is the fact that you look at the same name for 3 days, each a different perspective of how it might effect your view of God and life. Having the repetition of reading the name 3 times helps each it to make a greater impact, I think. It causes them to stay with me longer and has more of an influence on my understanding of God. I highly recommend this devotional to anyone who is looking for an in depth study into the many names of God. I received this book through The Book Club Network for my honest review, which I have given.
Daily Reflections on the Names of God is one of the best devotionals I’ve read! Each day features a name of God that corresponds to a prayer, scripture reference, devotional reading and question to consider. The names of God are repeated three days in a row to enforce the name, understanding and concept. The devotions are broken up into short readings that make the time about quality not quantity which is great for the average person’s busy schedule. It’s like a mini bible study everyday but because of the way it’s written, it can be done in a short devotional time. It is enhancing the way I read my bible and the way I approach God in prayer because it causes me to see WHO God is in a deeper way. I look forward to reading it each day. The devotional is one that I would recommend hands down to everyone, man or woman. I received this book from The Book Club Network in exchange for my honest opinion.
This is a great devotional book and I really enjoyed reading it. I plan to read it again as a day by day devotional starting in January. I want to study the scriptures more in depth and learn more about the names of God. This devotional will help you to know who God is, how He relates to us and His promises to us. The author gives us a scripture verse, a prayer, and a question for each day. In reading this book you will learn to walk closer with God. There are three days of devotionals for each of the names of God. I would recommend this book for everyone.
I received this book from bookfun.org for my honest opinion and review.
This book has been a good reminder and a learning experience for me. It was really good to study these 122 names of God. The author did not rush but spent three sections on each name. Each section begins with a Bible reading, then a verse, the lesson, a prayer, and finally questions for application. This is a book that I plan to incorporate in my Bible reading and quite time. I also think it would be good for a family devotional. I actually plan to start this in January with my kids. Each of God's names are important and shows us a character trait of Him. He is a knowable God. I received this book from bookfun.org and the opinions are my own.
Daily Reflections on the Name of God by Ava Pennington is a devotional book that I’ve enjoyed. Whether you are a new Christian or have been a Christian for will help you to know God and the different names used for him.
Even though I have studied the different names the author has shown me different aspects of the names. I love that you can reflect on each name for 3 days. Even though I’m doing one name each day I can still find something different in my daily readings that will say something special to me.
I received this devotional from the Bookfun Network and the author in exchange for an honest opinion.
This book of devotions is so beautifully written and inspired. It is perfect for busy Moms, Dads...everyone!! This is for anyone who needs inspiration in their daily walk. Each day is just the right length to help understand the name of God represented. Long enough to inspire, but short enough that you can read anytime and anywhere. Each day fills you and inspires you to dig deeper in the Word of God. Thank you for such a wonderful devotion! I was given this book by bookfun.org (The Book Club Network) in exchange for my honest opinion.
Daily devotions centred around 122 names and characteristics of God. Each name or characteristic is treated in 3 ways, 1 per day — "how and why God describes Himself the way He does…how the name or characteristic applies to our lives and how it changes or strengthens our relationship with God...[how] we apply what we are learning about God and ourselves to our relationships with others." Insightful, biblical, unique 3-prong approach to the names and attributes of God.
Daily Reflections on the Names of God by Ava Pennington is an excellent devotional, one that I am glad to highly recommend. Much has been written about how to know God intimately, but I can't think of a better resource than this devotional which focuses on the nature and ways of God.
This isn't the first time I've read these wonderful words devoted to our LORD, and it won't be the last. Once I finish, I go right back to the beginning and start again. It's a wonderful daily lesson on how powerful and loving our GOD is.
I like learning the names of God. The devotionals were short and thoughtful. The questions at the end of each one made you think. I would recommend this to anyone who would like to grow in their faith.
Ms. Pennington has a unique approach to this devotional: She has listed 122 names or attributes of God, and then written three short summaries of each one. The first defines the name/attribute of God, the second defines the way that knowledge of that name/attribute should affect our Christian life, and the third reflects how we should treat others in the light of that name/attribute. The 366 total entries are enough to cover the occasional leap year.
What an awesome daily devotional! If you have ever wanted to study all the names of God, then look no further. The daily devotional is short enough to read without rushing and in depth enough to gain a new understanding of the name it is highlighting. I also love how it will devote a couple days (devotionals) to a name, so you can get a better feel for it more than one day would allow. Very thoughtfully written and worded. In the back there is even an alphabetical listing of the names and pages to find the devotional that corresponds to the name. I am loving having this as my daily routine! received from bookfun.org for honest review
Ava Pennington has written a concise daily reflection on the names of God. In each one-page devotional she includes a passage of scripture for that day, a key verse, a meditation on a name and aspect of God, a brief prayer, and a thought-provoking question. Every devotional is an effective way to know God more deeply, to see who He really is and how He wants to relate to us, and to realize all of His wonderful promises to us. A very worthwhile tool and resource. I received this book through TBCN in exchange for an honest review of the book.
I have been greatly blessed by reading the book on the names ascribed to our Great God. My soul was awakened as I learned more of his names and the devotional that expanded on the name. I will recommend this book to all my Christian friends and family so that they do can experience getting to know God even more. I will keep this book and come back to it when I need to be reminded how great and awesome my God is.
