Guy Going Under: A Cave Adventure

Rate this book
A cave adventure turns perilous as history raises a mystery. Guy Toulouse is an unmotivated high school student obsessed with his self-image and a girl out of his reach. When he flees to the Olympic Peninsula of Washington State to escape his troubles in Seattle, he doesn't expect to encounter a dangerous gangster, a mystery surrounding 16th-century European buccaneers, and a hidden cave with a grisly history.  Nor does he expect to discover a connection between the historical mystery and a recent unexplained death. Or to become trapped underground with a too-smart girl he dislikes. In order to survive, he needs to call on resources he didn't know he had and re-think what--and who--is important to him. The trouble is Guy doesn't know if he is up to the job.

About the author

Erich Eipert

5 books19 followers
After spending his first five years in postwar Germany, Erich had the fortune to grow up an Iowa farm boy. He left tractors and livestock behind for a bachelor of science degree, a Vietnam combat infantry badge and purple heart, followed by a PhD in immunology and postdoctoral research stints. Following a move to the scenic and lovely-in-the-summer but tryingly-gray-in-the-winter Pacific Northwest he found his earlier experiences had left him ill-suited to the constrictions and indoor confinement of academic research. So, he hung up his white lab coat to pursue wider interests. Now on the distant side of youth, time not spent interacting with his family and pondering where the decades went is spent hiking the American West, camping, traveling, and playing bocce. Of course, writing necessarily fits in there somewhere as well. Erich lives with his wife in Seattle. More about his books can be found on his website at ericheipert.com.

The Author warns you in the beginning that you will probably hate the main character, and he was so right. Guy Toulouse is self-centered, arrogant, spoiled and what a lot of teens are, dissatisfied with everything. He whines and places blame on anyone but himself.
The first half of the book is a bit boring and it's hard to continue but if you keep at it, the second half of the book will reward you.
Lost in the caves near the ocean, no way out, the personality of Guy will under go many changes, most for the better.
Believe it or not, I think my biggest grip is not Guy himself, but the way he keeps referencing Gerald. Gerald said this and Gerald said that and that would be Geralds words. That got a bit trying and old. A few times is okay, but the constant took away from the story, hence the 3 stars instead of 4. I would suggest dropping about 80 percent of the reference to Geralds words.
I would read more of this Author if they learn to beef up the beginning to reach the end. I enjoyed the last half of the book very much and wish the first half was even partly as interesting.[[ASIN:B009R60F1W Guy Going Under: A Cave Adventure]]

Good book but far longer than it needed to be. The plot was intriguing and the characters were likeable, but in the end, I just wanted the story to be over. It seemed like it could have been summed up much better rather than drawn out to the point where I actually grew bored with it.
