Engaged teaching recognizes that educators need to offer more than lesson plans and assessments for students to thrive in the 21st century. Equip your students to be resilient individuals, able to communicate effectively and work with diverse people. The authors contend that students must develop their emotional and social skills as thoroughly as their academic skills, and that teachers must cultivate this growth. As someone trained as a mental health professional, this book hit on a lot of things that I would love to see implemented in schools everywhere. I have enjoyed reading it with teachers at my school and seeing the self-reflection and proactive attitudes it brought out regarding practices that can be implemented in classrooms. It was also helpful in identifying areas our teachers may need support in. The practice and sample boxes are filled with great tools for educators (or really any person interested in better engagement and mental health).
Summer reading for Lower School teachers to be discussed as a faculty when we return to school in August. The appendix is full of ideas to help build your student community.
