I met Ryan at San Diego Comic Con this year as I was browsing the indie comics and small press section of the show. He explained his graphic autobiography project to me, whereby he collected a bunch of family members, friends, and acquaintances, and put them each in a room alone with a tape recorder and a box of flashcards with questions about himself. He then transcribed the recorded answers into graphic panels, resulting in this book.
I walked away from his booth without buying the book, but then ruminated on it as I walked around the convention center. I was so struck by the idea of this project, and felt compelled to talk to Ryan again. (The people in the book confirm - he seems like the nicest, most approachable guy in the world.) I returned to his table and shelled out the $12 for a signed copy.
The book is an absolute delight. It's warm-hearted, funny, self-effacing and true. The people represent a wonderful cross-section of the characters in Ryan's life, and the project works as a playful reflection on the nature of self-perception and identity.
My only regrets? 1) Not buying all the other books. 2) Not asking Ryan out for a drink in San Diego(apparently he's got some killer moves on the dance floor). Maybe next year...
