The hero:

-ruined her birthday party

-ignored her for the next ten years

-blackmailed her into marriage

-did not consummate the marriage

-moved an ocean away for the next four years

-invited her would-be lover as a guest in their marital home

-told her he would give her a divorce and she should go away with her would-be lover

-finally slept with her then left the next morning without a word

because he was desperately and obsessively in love with her from afar for ten years.

It's HPlandia logic at its best!!!

Miranda refused to listen to warnings.

She didn't love Mark Sanders, but that didn't matter. He was heir to the estate where her mother was housekeeper. As Lady Sanders, Miranda could ensure a better life for her mother as well as herself.

But Mark was killed just before the wedding - the day her mother suffered a paralyzing stroke.

Jaime Knevett, the new heir, suggested a way out of Miranda's dilemma. But Miranda had destested him for years and it was with reluctance that she agreed to marry him. Then, after the ceremony, she found herself deserted.

Maybe a high 3 stars. The hero could have been more dominant and sure of himself. The author tried to make him so but missed the mark for me at least. The heroine was marrying for money and position. That was realistic I think for the daughter of the help to take the chance to move up. She was only 18. When the book started. Later after she comes out to Brazil the hero blows pretty hot and cold. There was sufficient explanation at the end so that was a plus.

i was gonna rate it a 4 star but then minused one as i'm not sure i liked the heroine very much. she was very immoral and way too ambitious for her own good. she, being the housekeeper's daughter, had a huge inferiority complex! so she aspired to be lady of the manor to show people. instead of working hard to achieve just dat, lil missy grabs at rich men! a wonder the hero did not fall out of love wid her! he actually married her, knowing full well she was after his money and what she had been upto wid mark! 4 years passed. she no longer needed jaime as her mother was dead. she was bored playing lady sanders and wanted a divorce. she was even engaged in an affair aid another man mentally (if not physically), i call dat adultery! she ruined it for me but the book was very entertaining! so the 3stars!;)

Possibly 4.5 stars, though I'm a big sucker for the housekeeper's daughter becomes Lady of the Manor stories. :-) This one had a pretty dramatic start to it (up to the fiance's death), which grabbed my interest. It got a tad slow with all that time at the hacienda and the hero's misleadingly suspicious disappearances to go to other areas of Brazil (which never amounted to anything nefarious, except that he never told her he was leaving in advance). Overall though, I enjoyed this one. Always like to see a secretly besotted hero caring for an ill or injured heroine, and I love stories where the hero fell in love with the heroine in childhood (though in real life I can't imagine falling in love with any of my childhood friends). So overall, a nice read.

Too short, but rather sweet, August 10, 2008

MY THOUGHTS: The premise sounds semi-despicable, the heroine's part that is, for seemingly marrying for money at first - but all is not what it seems. I thought the book was a little too short, I would have wanted to see more "love time" with the hero and the heroine. I wouldn't say this is my favorite book but it was nice and sweet. I thought it was EXTREMELY sweet that the hero actually loved her for that long, haha. The hero, Jaime, is one of those heroes who kinda control/manipulate the heroine's life, haha... But of course, all for the ultimate goal of happily ever after, so all's well that ends well, right? Anyway, cute story and yeaa... =P

A little slow to start and full of sadness. The woman is a bit of a door mat. Kind of glad she finally got together with him
