HE RULED BY THE BOOK Wealthy California rancher Rafael Cabrillo bad broken some of the wildest stallions and mares, and now those docile animals obeyed his every command. The imperious aristocrat expected his people to behave the same way, so Rafael was outraged when a buxom barefoot chit "borrowed" his favorite horse and then dared to disobey him! Determined to subdue the willful gypsy girl, be followed her to the vineyard, but his stern purpose evaporated when he spied her eating grapes and licking the sweet juice from her lips. He knew he must steal a kiss from that sweet mouth, caress every curve of that sun-warmed body, and tame the rebellious vixen with caresses until she begged to be taken to the heights of ecstasy--on his terms!
SHE LOVED FROM THE HEART Gabriella was astonished when the outraged senor made such a fuss, just because she galloped off on his borne to rescue her little brother. And when the authoritarian ranchero insisted that she atone for her crime by working at his hacienda--and wearing shoes!--she couldn't help but laugh, which made him even angrier. Vowing never to serve anyone, she defied his commands every chance she got--until she felt his strong arms crushing her against his powerful chest. And when she tasted his first searing kiss, Gabriella longed to feel the length of his virile body touching her own fiery flesh and to surrender to the rapture of love's ultimate embrace--just this once!
I am a HUGE fan of Donna Fletcher - so much so, that I applied for (and was accepted to!) her ARC team. I had never read this series before, and I was given the arc for the 3rd book in the trilogy that is just coming out, so I purchased books 1 & 2 to read those before I read book 3 (though most of the feedback suggests that they can be read as standalones). Ms. Fletcher usually writes medieval tales, so this is a departure from what I am used to when I read her books, and it just didn't do it for me like the other books of hers that I have enjoyed.
This story takes place in the early days of Los Angeles when it was considered a Mission as many California towns revolved around those at the time. Rafael Castillo is an important man and is a Ranchero (which usually refers to someone who runs a ranch, and he does, but in this case, it also seems to describe those who are involved in law making and law enforcement, and they are also members of the upper class). His family immigrated to Los Angeles from Spain about 15 years earlier... they were wealthy and fraternized with the royal family. A few years before they left, a tragedy befell their good friends wherein their twin daughters were kidnapped; Rafael (at the time, he was 12 years old) was betrothed to the elder twin. When they immigrated to California, he married a woman of similar social standing out of duty, and he had a son - both were killed in a raid when his wife visiting a neighboring ranch; thus, Rafael believes he has let two females he should have protected down in the worst way possible. Though he has no desire to wed again, he is being pressured by his mother to take a wife, and she is pushing their neighbor's eligible daughter on him pretty forcefully. Rafael is not very taken with the woman, but he is prepared to do what he must to carry on his family name and be a dutiful son and husband.
Gaby grew up in Los Angeles, and she is the eldest of a large family. She has never been one for following rules, is constantly pushing the boundaries set by society with respect to how women should behave, and she speaks her mind regardless of the consequences. Essentially, she is the exact opposite of what Rancheros like Rafael believe a woman should be, but none of the criticism troubles Gaby as she is happy with who she is and refuses to bend to anyone else's will. When her young brother is in trouble, she does not think twice before grabbing the beautiful horse that just happened to be at the mission when her sister told her that their brother was in urgent need all the way across the vineyard from where they stood. But when she returns, she finds an extremely angry Ranchero who is threatening to hang her for stealing his horse - doesn't he realize she only borrowed it for an emergency?
Rafael cannot believe the young woman who stole his horse is not at all remorseful - someone must take a firm hand with her and teach her what her place in society is. He came to the mission to ask a padre for his recommendation for a female companion to help his ailing mother who has not been herself since his father's passing two years before. When he encounters the willful Gaby, he believes he can meet the needs for his mother and take the opportunity to correct Gaby's willful behavior, so he tells her that in exchange for her service to his mother for 6 months, he will not press charges against her for stealing his horse. But when he brings this spirited woman home and sees how she brings about such position change to his mother's health and to his entire household, he realizes there is much more to her than the disobedient peasant he believed her to be when they first met. In addition, he cannot seem to be able to keep his mind off of her as he is attracted to her beyond reason; however, he knows his duty, and he must marry within his class to preserve his family's heritage and place in society. But Rafael can no longer deny his feelings for Gaby when her life is endangered... how can they possibly have a future with such a large class differential between them? Can Rafael move on from the pain of his past, or will he fail Gaby as he feels he failed the first two ladies entrusted to his care?
What I liked: --- The development of the characters (especially Rafael) was significant in terms of where they started and where they ended up at the end of the book which made it interesting --- An element of danger was present from about the middle of the story to the end which added more suspense and desire to get to the bottom of the mystery --- A very solid helping of steamy goodness!
What I didn't like as much: --- Rafael was a straight up chauvinist dick for most of the story, and then he suddenly was okay with Gaby being a free spirit? That felt a little rushed and without much of an evolution --- Similarly, it was an instalove kind of thing without much basis/substance --- The "mystery" fell very flat for me - it honestly made little sense even when it was "explained" and just didn't work well with the story, imo --- The dialogue felt off for a lot of the book - I don't know how to describe how, it just felt broken and a little forced, and the plot dragged along at times with what felt like filler
Overall, I didn't dislike this book, but it definitely is not one of my favorites. The premises for books 2 and 3 seem more promising, so I am going to read on.
Plot --- 3/5 Main Characters --- 3/5 Supporting Cast --- 3/5 Steam Level* --- 4/5 Violence --- nothing graphic Language --- not egregious POV --- 3rd
*Note that steam level is not a rating so much as a how hot was it: 0/5 - clean; 1/5 - mild; 2/5 - sensual but nothing descriptive; 3/5 - now we're getting somewhere; 4/5 - yes please! ; 5/5 - they did EVERYTHING in this one, y'all
I finished it. I skimmed quite a bit in the middle. An egotistical and rather mean male main character and a bright and cheerful female main character. Unreasonably cheerful. She smiles through insults and cruelty. If you enjoy the angst of falling in love with someone you shouldn't you might enjoy this book. I got quite bored with the repetition of the couple's repetitive angst. So, I skimmed. The ending was appropriate.
Since I have enjoyed Donna Fletcher’s twin series, I decided to read one of her very first books, Untamed Fire, and this book is exactly what I expected from DF.
It reminds me of old school romances where the story is set in the 1800’s and the characters are rigid in the ways of society and class. This fuelled my interest more on DF’s books, because I have been an avid fan of Nora Roberts and Sandra Brown, and her writing reminds me of their earlier books as well.
Rafael Cabrillo appears to be very harsh and high-handed (he really is); he is used to getting his way and enjoys his title as a feared rich and powerful ranchero whose word is law. This is why when he caught Gabrielle “Gaby” Alvarado stealing his horse, he immediately punished her to six months of no pay service as his mother’s companion.
Gaby is a free spirited, fiery peasant who refuses to wear shoes and lives her life with smiles and devious antics. Basically, she’s sunshine while Rafael is the grump. However, what makes this story more intriguing is the mystery that surrounds Gaby’s past and the secret that for some reason the whole town feels Rafael needs to know and is the only person who can help. Even the Padres involved in the secret seek him. I mean- was there no mayor??? Or sheriff? But I guess the power Rafael has in society makes him a go-to person.
Rafael is mean. Gaby is foolish. These are not perfect MCs but the pining on both sides… wow. I am swooning.
Will definitely read more of Donna’s books. I’m also enjoying her highlander series.
Like first, here's this annoying guy who is egotistical, bossy, and doesn't make sense.
The plot pissed me off. The characters pissed me off.
And no, it's not a spoiler when I say the next part. Her though process about him pissed me off. So yeah, we get it. They are attracted to each other. Couple of makeout sessions blah blah blah.He tells her he wants her. And after she's done sucking his hideous face, the bitch goes, "Oh, Rafe wants me and means to have me. He WILL have me. I must shiver and succumb to his will."
Like OH MY GOD, YOU just kissed him willingly, why the fuck do you have to be every fucking stereotypical medieval/historical heroine who thinks the guy controls everything?!? and that[dramatic mocking voice] you MUST give in to his undeterred passions. Like ew no.
Also, the hero treated the heroin pretty badly. He makes her his slave for a stupid reason, then treats her unfairly at his house without respect, makes her feel doomed about her situation, toys with her and parades other girls that he said he would marry and keep her as his slave like ARE YOU FUCKING KIDDING ME?!?! That slimy son of a bitch. (His mom's actually annoying to me too.)
Why the hell would a smart and tenacious heroin be attracted to such a gross guy? Also, she's not headstrong and whatever the hell else she was supposed to come across as.
I had to put the book down. It was stupid. End of story.
I was about to read several other books by the same author but if this is how all of her books are ...
If someone asked me if with one word I could aptly describe this book it would be...PHENOMENAL!!!!!
The first in a series. Rafael Carrillo is a wealthy Californian Ranchero he is known for his mastery in taming even the wildest stallions. He's a much sought after bachelor and comes from a long standing aristocratic Spanish family, with handsome looks, money and a coveted place in society he has everyone obeying his every whim. When Gabriella Alvarado a feisty young woman runs off to help her younger brother she borrows the first horse she comes across, unknown to her she's borrowed Don Rafael's prized stallion! A free spirit Gabriella does not acknowledge the grave offence she's committed. Determined to punish the strikingly beautiful barefoot woman as punishment- companion to his grandmother for six months! What he didn't expect was the smouldering passion she invoked in him!
Gabriella being the free spirit and not the most obedient person felt every restriction placed on her. A kind soul with an abundance of love she's determined to show the uptight Don Rafael that life is fun and full of passion if only he would let himself feel the emotions! Rafael not fully realizing how much she would turn his orderly world into a world of chaos, confusion and fiery passion! But when her past comes to haunt her will Gabriella learn to trust Rafael? Will the power of love tame the wild Gypsy spirit in Gabriella? Donna Fletcher is a master storyteller she casts her web and pulls you in. A great start to a wonderful series, the writing is awesome and the story carries you into the life of the Rancheros, captivating and endearing characters that make your heart skip a beat! I loved this story can't wait to read the next one in this series Renegade Love!
I honestly did not think I was going to like this book in the beginning. Gaby, the heroine, was a favorite of mine. She's everything that I love in a heroine. Independent, strong-willed, a bit of a stubborn streak, and a butt load of self confidence. Now on to Rafael, the hero, irritated me to no end. I understand that he had alot of responsibility, and later on we understand he took on more to avoid having to deal with emotional wounds (which somewhat redeemed him in my eyes), but his egotistical attitude rankled me and I loved watching him get put in his place.
The plot itself was different and left me guessing until the very end. Even when I thought I knew who it was, something came and made me reconsider everything. The further into the book we get, the more and more Rafael starts to shed propriety and welcome change in his life and this is where I started to respect his character and was happy with how the book progressed. I definitely recommend this book for the suspense, mystery, and of course the romance! It's well written and flows beautifully! Another great start to another trilogy!
Untamed Fire is Book One in a three-book set and is an older book that I had read years ago. I decided to reread it and thoroughly loved it a second time. It is a beautiful romance between two people who are worlds apart in their situations. The story also has an underlying mystery with bad guys doing some really terrible things, which adds a lot to the plot and keeps the reader eagerly connected to find out how it all ends. I loved Rafael’s character as he was such a man, and really bossy but when it came to giving his heart away he was a softie. Gabriella aka Gaby was such a fun heroine in the story. She added such fun and laughter along with the secondary characters that were fun to get to know. This author writes such lovely romances that I often find myself rereading her books even though I have a long list on my TBR pile. All three books are out in this series so please check them out.
I'll start with my likes then work through my dislikes...
First off, I definitely liked the ease in which they loved each other, their feelings weren't soaked in denial unto forever, but they owned it... i like that, secondly i like a man who gets jealous easily, but holds his jealousy in check and is not suspicious of the cat, rat and pet fish, thirdly, there was a relationship (sometimes writers get so caught up in the angst i think they forget their writing about love, romance, relationship)... thirdly, the story wasn't overly cast with characters, whereby the h and H are usually robbed their shine in the sun....
Now, the drawbacks, 1. I read the passion, but i didn't feel it much 2. the story line was pretty good but the storytelling was flat 'bleh'. For me to read a story with complete abandon i like the to get captured and my attention held beyond my will, i didn't get arrested here at all.
Untamed Fire is a fantastic historical western romance by Donna Fletcher. Ms. Fletcher has provided readers with a well-written book populated with an outstanding cast of characters. Rafael lost his bride to be when she was just a baby, kidnapped and never found. He later lost his wife and son to an attack. When Gaby enters his life he's a powerful landowner and she is a lowly peon. Rafael and Gaby's story is packed with drama, humor, smokin' hot sex, action and suspense. I enjoyed this book from cover to cover and look forward to my next book by Donna Fletcher. Untamed Fire is part of the Rancheros Trilogy but can be read as a standalone. This is a complete book, not a cliff-hanger.
I voluntarily read a complimentary copy of this book that I received from Bookfunnel. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
I was unsure what to expect as some reviews were pretty scathing and so many people disliked the hero. I found the story quite compelling and the heroine lovely. The hero was a product of his life and his position in the social hierarchy but he revealed himself to be a worthy hero. The book kept me turning pages and other than a bit of eye rolling at some corny parts and awkward dialogue on occasion, I really enjoyed it. Would have been nice if it had been reviewed by a copy editor though.
Great story. It has sassy ah so sassy Gaby and hot alpha Rafael who needs some loosening up. It's got snappy dialogue, good family and friends as backup personality and an interesting story that will pull you into the story. (Even hot chemistry but not too explicit between G and R). Only thing to make it better is an audible version.
I really like this author and am amazed at her versatile writing. I have read several of her series and they are all so different and good. Her Pict series is still my favorite. I really enjoyed this book and have already downloaded the next book in this series.
Untamed Fire is a story about love… Love which has no boundaries, love that doesn’t observe social classes, love that is unconditional, and love that is all encompassing.
Don Raphael Cabrillo is visiting the San Gabriel Mission in Los Angeles, the first time he comes into contact with Gabrielle (Gaby). When she ‘steals’ his horse – practically right out from under him – he is angry beyond measure and demands punishment and restitution from Padre Jose. Gabrielle returns quickly with one of her little brothers in tow, she’s relieved he is not truly hurt. She encounters a very angry Ranchero, and Gaby soon learns that she is to leave with Don Cabrillo, to serve a six month sentence at his hacienda. She will serve his mother, Dona Maria, in the capacity of a companion.
Gaby adamantly tries to explain she only ‘borrowed’ the horse, because she believed her brother was hurt badly – and the horse provided the fastest way to get to Juan. Don Cabrillo will not listen, he has accused and convicted her of stealing his prized horse, Bella.
Once they arrived at the hacienda, Gaby is introduced to the other staff members and also to Dona Maria. Don Cabrillo has given her strict instructions of how to care for his mother, and what he expects her to do. Gaby is also told that she is expected to follow the instructions without variance or question.
Don Raphael is soon to learn how willful, hard headed Gaby is, and will do what she feels is right, no matter what she is told. He realizes now why the Padre asked several times “are you sure this is what you want – Gaby as a companion to your Mother?” He realizes that Padre Jose was trying to tell him he would have his work cut out for him. Gaby is like NO other woman. She questions every order, disobeys almost always, and has a sharp wit and unending curiosity.
Within a couple of weeks, Gaby has Dona Maria up and out of her wheelchair enjoying picnics down by the river. At every turn Don Raphael is challenged by Gaby. Her inquisitive nature and defiant ways has stirred more than his anger. Against all, Raphael finds that he is greatly attracted to Gaby.
When rumors of Gaby’s parentage get back to Raphael, he takes the time to investigate. What he finds out turns Gaby’s world upside down.
Will Don Cabrillo be able to help Gaby come to terms with the information he has figured out? Will Gaby find the courage to tell Raphael how she feels about him? Will Raphael ignore their social stations and confess his feelings for her?
I really enjoyed reading Untamed Fire. Romance usually isn’t my first choice to read, but this book drew me in and I couldn’t seem to turn the pages fast enough. The story is excellent…and I’m looking forward to the release of the sequel Renegade Love.
As I began reading this book, I was somewhat intrigued. I had never read a book that featured Hispanic lovers. And indeed, it was a spicy romance from the beginning. As much as Gaby and Raphael butted the heads, it was evident that the sparks between them were more than anger. It was true love from the beginning even though he was a ranchero and she was a peasant. I found many of their early interactions quite interesting, to say the least.
When the mystery portion of the book was introduced, I began to wonder how things were going to be tied together. But I found that there was not a lot of focus on the mystery, so I figured it would not be very important to the heart of the story. I discovered later that I was wrong.
As the romance continued to evolve between Gaby and Raphael, my interest in them started to wane. While there were not detailed bedroom scenes (thank you), I began to get tired of them spending every evening in bed having hot, heavy sex. I realize that my morals are a little different--I grow tired of characters engaging in sex while not married. Notwithstanding, I found that my sense of reality was causing me to lose interest. Who has time to have unbridled sex every night and all night long without restraint? I found myself rolling my eyes at the relationship between the two characters.
As the mystery became important and was solved, I found some parts of that a bit unrealistic, and by the end of the book, I was happy about it ended, but I did not care as much as I did in the beginning of the book. I am grateful that profanity was almost nonexistent in the book, and that made the reading of the book quite a pleasant experience. But when it comes to substance, this book missed the mark for me.
If you like sugary-sweet romances with a spirited female, I can guarantee that you will like this book. I did not find the book overly historical, but for the true romantic, this book should be a dream.
I was sent a copy of this book in exchange for my honest opinion. I was not financially compensated, and all opinions are 100 percent mine.
When a barefoot slip of a girl steals Don Cabrillo's prized horse, he is furious and wants to put her in her place as soon as he gets a hold of her. Rafael demands that Gabriella serve out her punishment as his mother's companion for six months at the hacienda and to obey his every command; Rafael not fully realizing how much she would turn his world or order into a world of Chaos and confusion. Gabriella, desperate to save her younger brother, borrows Senor Rafel's horse, never knowing how much trouble she would end up in. Gabriella is a free spirit but finds Rafael's way stifling and is determined to show him the meaning of Fun....even if it might kill her in the process...But when a mystery comes to haunt her and her past, with the help of Rafael, Gabriella learns to trust in Rafael and to learn the power of love.... Every time that I read Donna Fletcher I am astounded by how much I have enjoyed her stories, and Untamed Fire was surpisingly good considering I wasn't too enthusiastic when I first started...however from the first few pages I was utterly captivated by this magical story that stole its way into my heart. One of the things that I found unique about Untamed Fire...is the circumstances surrounding this book. Its rare to find a setting which is in the early 1900's, and dealing with the Arisocracy from Spain...in fact this is probably one of the few books that I have read dealing with any characters originating from Spain, so it was very refreshing. Untamed Fire produced many different aspects, but one that I really liked was how spirited the characters were. There were also many scenes that made me laugh and cry...Gaby was such a fun and endearing character with a zest for life, and I just liked her instantly.....she didn't have an obedient bone in her body and I loved how she stood up to Rafael, and showed him the meaning of the word 'fun'. Overall a fun and enjoyable romance, an excellent story line, endearing characters that will charm you and a love story that will sing to your heart. I can hardly wait for the next upcoming release sequel 'Renegade Love'.....
Donna Fletcher is one of my favorite authors. All her romances have a life of their own that brings the reader right in to the action and passion of the story. It is no wonder that I own most of Ms. Fletcher's works.
I just finished reading Untamed Fire, which is part of two book in her Rancheros series. Untamed Fire is book one and can be read by itself for each has a set of characters with their own happy ending. This is the story of Gabriella, a young independent free spirited woman who in hearing of a family emergency borrows a horse in order to get to her brother's side as fast as possible. Unfortunately the horse she borrowed was owned by the Powerful wealthy California rancher Dom Rafael Cabrillo. He is a man who expects to be obeyed, so imagine his outrage when a buxom barefoot chit steals his favorite horse and then dared to disobey him! Determined to subdue the willful gypsy girl, he follows her, but his stern purpose evaporated when he spied her eating grapes and licking the sweet juice from her lips. He knew he must steal a kiss from that sweet mouth, caress every curve of that sun-warmed body, and tame the rebellious vixen with caresses until she begged to be taken to the heights of ecstasy--on his terms! When he insists that Gabriella atone for her crime by working at his hacienda--and wearing shoes!--she couldn't help but laugh, which made him even angrier. She vows never to serve anyone and will defy any command every chance she gets.
Of course I loved this story. I found it very entertaining and will put this along with many of Ms. Fletcher's novels on my re-read shelf.
It has been a long while since I read a true pure historical romance without, immortal warriors and such. Let me just say this book reminded me of just why I fell in love with this genre way back when I was a teenager. Though at first, I was a bit confused at the beginning and wondered where that played into this book, it didn't take long to figure it out and enjoy this great read.
Gaby, I loved her. She is a feisty wildcat and from the very start she gives Raphael problems, to say she is more than a handful is a understatement and that is what makes her so much fun.
Raphael, I can see it now some of you might not like him and at first I wasn't so sure, but as I got to know him I knew there was more than just the broody, demanding man he is. And it takes Gaby to find that part of his heart he thought he had sealed off forever.
What I loved about this book, is not only I could feel what the characters were feeling, but the fact you could feel the sparks between this couple from the very start. It was a pretty fast read. Only thing I see wrong with this book is that it ended.
Would I recommend? If you love historical romance in it's truest form then get this book its well worth your time and money. Meanwhile I am going to go check out Donna Fletcher's other books. She definitely has gotten a new fan right here.
Untamed Fire is a fantastic, wonderfully written historical romance. Ms. Fletcher pens her characters full of feeling and very well developed. I actually had a hard time putting this book down, it is a great book! I recommend this to everyone who loves the romantic historical genre!
This review is based on a complimentary copy which was provided for an honest review.
