This was..different. It's one of those comics that goes over the top just for the sake of shock value. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. The main character is an unlikable villain, which makes it a little hard to get into the story. Also, there's a few too many pedophilia jokes and child killings for the sake of "humor." Granted, that's the whole point of it, to offend, but sometimes even bombastic silly jokes can be a little creepy.
That being said, the art is nice and it's still entertaining in a "guilty pleasure" sort of way. I'll probably keep reading to see how crazy the next volume gets.
Bomb Queen Deluxe Edition: Volume One collects Bomb Queen: Royal Flush #1-4, Bomb Queen II: Queen Of Hearts #1-4 as well as Bomb Queen VS Blacklight: Cat Fight, with art and writing by Jimmie Robinson (Evil & Malice, Avigon).
Bomb Queen doesn't just govern New Port City...she rules it. After routing or killing not just all of the superheroes who would stand in her way...but her former teammates and other super-villains, she is the dictator of the city and the public just eats her up. But, being at the top means that there's always someone who wants you to fall, and since she's not into the business of making friends, her time in the spotlight may just be coming to an end.
The premise of this book is what sold me, really. What would it mean to live in a city of filth and moral absence? Bomb Queen hopes to explore that. Jimmie Robinson's art style is sort of manga-influenced, and it also reminds me a lot of Amanda Connor's artwork, though I do like her style better. The writing wasn't anything super-special, so what we have here is a B-Movie in comic book form.
The vulgarity and the over-the-top cheesecake is a novel addition, though some won't appreciate it. It's highly cheesy and very kinetic. Bomb Queen is the epitome of sex and violence. Bomb Queen herself dresses in an impossibly skimpy outfit and other characters, including the self-righteous superheroes found within its pages, are no better....hiding bulging genitalia behind the thin fabric of their costumes, or going just plain nude.
In the hands of a better writer, this could be a great property. As it is, it seems a lot like a world similar to the one found in Escape From L.A., without Kurt Russel, of course.
Anyway, don't expect anything too heady with this. Just sit back and enjoy the ride.
Now that was a good read. A villain as the main character in a city where she is the dictator. You really start to root for her. Winning for her involves a lot of explosions and random killing. The world is great and features a lot of random weird stuff happening in the random panel cutaways or in the corner of a panel. Really suited for someone who has a sick sense of humor. This sort of reminds me of a sicker, 18+ version of Judge Dredd... if Dredd was a psycho killer in a very revealing outfit.
MOST DEFINITELY FOR 18+ READERS.
This first Deluxe trade had 3 stories in it.
This first, Bomb Queen: Royal Flush/Bomb Queen: Woman of Mass Destruction, has a politician try to clean up the streets from the legalized crime that Bomb Queen has allowed in her city. Great story and doesn't outstay it's welcome. (4/5)
Second is Bomb Queen II: Queen of Hearts/Bomb Queen II: Dirty Bomb. This has Bomb Queen finding herself a 'Fuck Buddy' who isn't all he appears to be. We also get to see the back story of how she became the dictator of New Port. Great read with some really cool turns. (5/5)
Third is Bomb Queen vs Blacklight One-Shot has Bomb Queen going on a trip to Vegas for a weapons convention. While there though the hero Blacklight is at another convention. Quips and explosions erupt. Short and sweet. (4/5)
The world it build is one that I find myself drawn to in literature. The worst-of-the-worst doing the worst things you can image. Kinda like bizzaro fiction.
Anyway I recommend this is you have twisted sense of humor and don't mind open depravity being hinted at/half shown.
When I first saw Bomb Queen, I saw a ridiculously dressed woman with a cartoon bomb, what could possibly go wrong? This comic had to be either great or so bad it's awesome.
Too bad it's neither.
Bomb Queen just doesn't work, it's just filled with too many questions with no or lame answers. How does the city still function? She claims the city has "Crime Zones", but it never explains what exactly they are, if they are places where crime is legal, but you can clearly see people prostituting themselves and of course one is a child because... it's shocking? Or funny?
I still don't know if this comic was trying to be funny or shocking. The comic keeps dropping rape and pedophilia, as a matter of fact, Bomb Queen seems to kidnap and rape people on a daily basis... and then kill the person with a bomb if not satisfied... and yet has a porn site dedicated to herself.
The comic keeps contradicting itself, sometimes on the same page.
How is Bomb Queen still in power? She has no powers and her only gadgets is bombs and they aren't that varied, she only seems to have "normal", napalm and stink bombs, for the fart jokes obviously. Why does the US Government not intervene? Why won't a superhero stop her?
Apparently the US doesn't give a damn, and her bomb can take down superheroes, because reasons?
Everybody in the city seems to love her, but never gives a reason why. She's supposed to be a tech genius, but she never seems to prove it.
This might not be the worst comic ever, but it the most boring and pointless.
Up until today I had never heard of Bomb Queen. As I was in the mood for something that was fun and didn't require a whole lot of brain power to enjoy, I took a leap of faith & purchased volume 1. While the art is outstanding, the writing can be juvenile in places. That being said, it doesn't take away from the comic. Bomb Queen is an irreverent parade of violence, explosions, nipples and extremely adult humor. It was an enjoyable way to spend a lazy, snowy Sunday. If you enjoy campy, over-the-top movies and comics then you will want to give Bomb Queen a look.
This comic is and will forever be on the top of my favorite comics list. Raunchy, but tasteful on a whole other level. F**K superheroes... in this story, it is the villain that maintains an illusion of order in society.
A hot and humorous ride on the evil side. Great writing and great art.
I have nothing against crude and vulgar content of any kind but this book has no value. What I do have a problem with is a lack of writing talent of any kind when your job is to write. This author, and I use that word as loosely as possible, should never be aloud to hold a pencil or keyboard again.
Meh. This feels like a cash grab and the author basically admits as such in the interviews in the back. That was actually the most interesting part of the book.
The story is lacking and the sexy isn't sexy. Why are the nipples digital? I don't get it!
I read the Bomb Queen series during the Obama administration/plot line, and I really remember liking it. It was one of my first forays away from the big 2 comics publishers, and it was refreshing to see an openly vulgar and sexual world. I remember finding New Port City to be a fitting set for BQ's antics and only recall having a single issue with any of it -- that being Bomb King's DNA sample, as .
Fast forward to 2019, post- #MeToo and Amber Rose's Slutwalk; post- a huge cultural awareness of human/sexual trafficking; post- trans people actually being people; and post- any number of other atrocities that our 24/7 infotainement news cycle uses to garner clicks.
After all of that, something about BQ doesn't sit well with me anymore. It seems like she's everything an edgy and horny teen boy would write into their female villain protagonist. Kills for fun? Check. Giant breasts and little-to-no clothing? Check. Sex for fun and profit? Check.
She's unlikable, and incredibly shallow both in regards to her demeanor and depth as a character; New Port City is vile, and has actually offended me at times; and, worst of all (in regards to this particular review), the story is... just okay.
I used to recommend this serial to people. I was really excited to get the hardcover deluxe edition so I could loan it out to folks. But... I don't know anymore.
I'll likely buy the rest of this deluxe series, as I'm a completionist, but I'm also interested to see if my memory of a better BQ comes from later stories (sans the Obama stuff... that was terrible), or if I've just grown up.
Bomb Queen is a villain and making a villain into a anti-hero or in lesser note likable is a tall task. This book did neither and actually made you root against the antagonist. This book is vulgar but not in a tongue in cheek way. The vulgarity was not clever or needed but felt like a teenage kid adding vulgarity to make himself laugh. The ending added a highlight that unfortunately I will not explore by reading a volume 2, the introduction of a Latina hero who unlike previous hero’s introduced and then quickly defeated by Bomb Queen is humble and kinda of a nerd. Her story is the story I would rather enjoy reading.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
Accept that this book is meant to be over the top, and it is...It's better than average. I would give it a 3.5 if I could, but not a 4. Good art but a story that could be improved.
Most comics with a villain as the star don't work. Enter Bomb Queen, master of New Port City. Killer, dictator, exhibitionist and more, she rules her city with in iron fist. Along with her cat ashe and her super computer, BQ is an irreverent comic poking fun at all comic cliches.
Almost naked violence. The scenario is one in which a villain wins and creates a modern Sodom and Gomorrah zone. Violent and raunchy, it has a lot of Garth Ennis vibes but less sex, violence, sexualized violence, or kink flexing. 2.5/5, this wasn't for me, but I was surprised how tolerable it was. Maybe the lack of kissing or graphic sex made it go over better?
