The Immortal Circus: Act One

Rate this book
Murdered contortionists aren't exactly what Vivienne signed up for when she ran away to join the circus. But like most things under the big top, nothing is what it seems. With a past she can't quite remember, Vivienne finds that running away forever might not be as appealing as it once sounded—especially not when she realizes the devilishly attractive ringleader, Mab, is the Faerie Queen of legend—and that she and the rest of the troupe are locked in an age-old rivalry between the otherworldly Courts.

Aided by her friends Kingston—a feisty stage magician whose magic is quickly stealing her heart—and his smart-ass assistant, Melody, Vivienne finds herself racing against the clock to discover the culprit behind a series of deaths that should be impossible. However, the answer she seeks might reveal more about her own bloody past—and future—than she bargained for.

The show's just beginning. Step right up...

I am shook.
RTC bitches.

The Immortal Circus: Act One was so mindblowingly good. No really, that ending took me some god damn surprise. I never saw it coming. Heck, I didn't see a lot coming.. although I did have an inkling about who the "villain" was.

Now this book is about our dear sweet innocent Vivienne. She joins the circus which could be innocent enough.. but what is she running from? Well, she does seem to have a troubled past and when she meets some of the members from the circus she finds out that they all have one thing in common: a troubled freaking past.

Of course some mysterious shit starts happening. I didn't really think I could trust a bunch of people either. I was worried about Vivienne because she was trusting everyone no matter what. Like slow ya roll girl.

Besides Vivienne, there's Melody and Kingston. Now Melody I liked. Nah, I loved that bitch. Then there was Kingston.. who I'm still not completely sure about. I have no idea if his intentions or feelings are true or real. I feel like he was too caught up in playing to like her and when she found out about it.. well, I just don't trust the guy. He was too quick to lead Lilith along just to make sure she helped them find Melody.. and he knew that she had a crush on him too.

Overall, it was such a good book. I was completely enamored in it. I couldn't pause my audiobook at all. I was gripping at the edge of my sweet waiting until this book ended. I need the next book right now! That ending/cliffhanger of death almost killed me. I was in shock. I ignored everyone at work because my mind was trying to wrap around the information that was just handed to me.

I feel like I was mindfucked by that ending - just a little bit though.

WTF did I just read?!? I feel like my girl, Alice, peering into some hole watching creepy crawlers, and I'm not sure I want to go down that mf'r and play, or not...

description

I'm not sure?

So, the norm is that one reads a book and can then give a brief synopsis of what the plot entails. Well, I read it and still have no mfing clue what's what, but I'll try to sum it up...

There's a circus of paranormal beings. It's run by some hard ass fae queen who makes the troupe sign magically powered contracts. The female mc remembers signing this contract, but nothing before it or what the contract itself contains. She's not even sure if she's mortal or immortal; she's basically one confused bitch. The only thing she seems to know is that she lust..likes...loves a witch (male mc) that is about as aloof as a deer at a NRA meeting.
What follows is a lot of amnesia'esc 'aha'moments that often don't turn out to be so aha but instead only yield more questions & misdirection. The female mc sets about to figure out who is the saboteur/murderer as she alternates between wanting and not wanting to figure out wtf she is and wtf everyone else really is.

It's one of those plots that you feel like someone is poking around in your brain rearranging shit as you read. It's no doubt mysterious, but it's also one of those plots that use a lot of misdirection, such as through amnesia, and plot trappings, such as a person being unable to reveal x,y, z because of a contractual clause that literally magically clamps their mouth closed.

The above makes this a frustrating read. And, by the end, it's even more frustrating that I feel like I know very little more 'truths' and 'facts' than when I started reading.

I don't mind a trilogy and I don't mind cliffhangers, but I do feel it necessary for each book to hold some degree of resolve to at least so portion of the plot as it unfolds. Otherwise, the entire book feels like a prequel or prologue, which is exactly what this book ended up feeling like IMHO- a VERY LONG prologue to a series.

Romance

I saved this from the plot because it deserves special recognition... & not in the head held high kinda way.

I absolutely hated the romance element of this book. It was horribly done. It was odd. It was eeeky at times. It was a far cry from anything resembling swoony. Here's why:

• Male MC is so close to another female that the female MC believes he and this girl are a couple for a large chunk of the book... That is until it just drops out of the clear blue yonder that the girl is gay and the guy feels sisterly love for her.

• Male MC admits to having slept with another man in the distant past out of boredom.

• Male MC makes out with a 12-year-old for what 'could've been minutes or hours' in front of the female MC.

• Male MC is kissing the female MC and flirting one minute and acting as if she's a petulant, idiotic child that he wouldn't dare have a relationship with the next.

description

^among many other points^

Characters

The main characters here, especially the male MC, lacked depth. What little substance to them that was had wasn't particularly positive; it wasn't things that endeared them to me, made me root for them, nor encouraged me to empathize with them in their plight.

description

^Her at the beginning ^

description

^Her in the middle^

description

^Her at the end^

She was too spastic, from not fitting in, to willing to die for them, to not trusting them, to just going with the flow and not giving a fuck about truths at the end.

description

^Him at the start^

description

^Him throughout^

description

^?and by the end?^

He was too aloof and came off as selfish when he did have moments of actual meaningful speech.

Writing

At 25%, it's clear that this particular writing style isn't my taste. It's excellently done for what it is, but I got restless in the flow very quickly. I like meat and potatoes writing, and, if it must wax poetically, then the waxing needs to really make me think to stay interested vs being about scenery.

This is a highly visual novel in most of the writing, with the thinking parts of the plot being very quick jabs.

The author does a fantastic job bringing the scenes, world, and settings to life. I can vividly imagine the performances and goings on as I'm reading.

However, as a thinking, substance reader, I found the plot to be too slow moving within all the above for the first quarter. I mean 1/4 through the book, I need more than just knowing someone was murdered, the mc likes a guy that may/may not be with someone else, and that magical entities are abound. I find myself skipping and jumping to spit the salad out and find a piece of meat:/ By 50% some meat is being thrown in the mix, but, again, it's quick jabs of it and then back to salad.

The last 1/4 of the book moves faster and has more plot substance than flowery details.

Overall

description

It's definitely a weird one - High fantasy & Mystery. If you don't like those elements, you'll hate this book. I love those niches, and still in not sure if I can say I liked or disliked this book as a whole.

I loved the premise and the setting. Hated the romance. Meh to ehhh about the characters. Found myself highly frustrated with the plot pacing and the obtuse, merry go round way it was presented. Despite my deep curiosity of how the plot plays out, I'm not sure if I can handle two more of these books.

2 1/2 stars. If the romance would've been good, even mediocre, I would've given it 3 - 3 1/2 stars.

The Immortal Circus
Cirque des Immortels, Book 1
By: A. R. Kahler
Narrated by: Amy McFadden
This is a "WOW" book, supernatural beings are the players in the circus and Mab is the owner. Mab, yes the fae queen. The main character is the has no idea what her past is, or why she is there. There are murders, attacks from the Summer Court, and lots of small mysteries. Great characters, twisted plot, and more. This is so good. The narrator is marvelous! The emotions and voices are wonderful! Creepy as heck! Love this book! Used my kindle prime!

The best Prime freebie I’ve read all year!

Talk about an imagination! I wasn't totally sure of what to expect going into this one. I wasn't sure which book to choose for my monthly kindle prime freebie and time was running out. It was a debut, and it was originally a Kindle serial series. But all in all it turned out wonderfully.

Though I've read other novels with a circus theme, this one certainly comes off as unique. Mab is a really cool leader. There are a lot of questions but the story pulls you in so that you really want to read along to get them answered. She can be generous but she absolutely has an agenda, so it keeps things interesting.

I really enjoyed the evolving family dynamic. Romance fans who prefer the slow build should appreciate this one, though it's not agonizingly slow progress either. We are just scraping the surface for what the future will bring.

I think A. R. Kahler keeping his name ambiguous was a good thing. I know that some people prefer female authors in this genre, especially when it's written in a female's perspective. But A.R. handles it well and makes all gender appealing, especially the potential love interest. Upon reading his bio I learned that he actually was a part of a circus troupe. That's about the only way to explain why this book felt so authentic and legit (as far as the paranormal goes of course).

The next one is due out soon and I'm getting it, Prime or no Prime! It's currently at $3.99 on the Kindle, but the pre-order for book 2 is $1.99.

I’ve been fascinated by circuses since going to a couple when I was a little girl. I love the mystery and magic of them. Just the thought of a circus thrills me.

I sometimes find fantasy novels hard to listen to in audiobook format, as they can be quite descriptive. So a positive for me while listening to the audiobook, was that this story wasn’t that visually descriptive. However, this is something I would have found a little disappointing if I’d chosen to read the book.

The Immortal Circus is a dark fantasy young adult romance, so if you like any or all of those things, I would definitely recommend this book.

I borrowed this book in audiobook format through Kindle Unlimited.

This book reads like fan fiction: little in the way of plot but plenty of descriptions of hunky men and unlikely sex acts. Usually, I can soldier through bad books and call it a learning experience, but I'm just not in the mood.

Delightfully intriguing, with hints of magic and chaos. The Immortal Circus wraps you up in its world full of death defying acts and a mystery reaching back centuries.

The circus has always intrigued me…mainly because you can eat as much fairy floss as you want and no one looks at you weirdly. That is my kind of place. Let me just start by saying that I went into this one thinking it was going to be a different story, so I think that is why I was slightly disappointed that it didn’t have the elements in it that I was looking forward to reading. This being said the story just brings you into this crazy world from the very first page. I love it when that happens.

Our main character Vivienne joined the circus to escape a past that she doesn’t really remember. Thrown into the dark world of circus life she becomes the main suspect once members of the circus start dying. The only problem with this is that their contracts don’t allow them to pass on, so how are these people dying? Wrapped up in a war that has been raging on since the dawn of time, Vivienne takes it upon herself to figure out was is really happening.

The world was highly fascinating and I enjoyed how particular elements of well known lore is slightly changed to meet the needs of modern time. A let down, however, was the main character. I’m not a real fan when main characters take it upon themselves to ‘save the day’ without a solid justification for doing so. Viv just believed that it was her duty to figure out what was happening because the circus had become her family, when no body else was that concerned about the events. It isn’t until the very end of the book that we find out more about her past so that then her quest starts to make more sense. But this means that I found her kind of annoying for the majority of it.

Overall I thought this story had some really unique points, but in the end the lack of character depth really brought me out the story.

This book took me in straightaway.
There was magic and intrigue.
Death and conspiracy.
We have a female protagonist, Vivienne. The new chic. Grrrl power.
Except, this one is diluted by her constant pining over our Male lead, Kingston.
The first 1/4 of the book I really was not sure I was going to get through.
Vivienne's power appeared solely in her ability to drool and drop her tongue to her shoes whenever Kingston came about.
Then-something shifted.
It got darker. It got grittier.
The focus was taken off the drooling (the love interest remained) and moved into a true plotline.
Summer Court and Winter Court.
True magic.
Demons unleashed-inner and metaphorically.
This book won me over.
Our female lead became stronger and more intriguing.
Our male second came along as well.
The most interesting character, Mab, our S&M Goddess from Shakespeare, brings us to places we dare not go.
The book truly grew wings and I found myself wanting more.
This writer will be going places.
Me, I'm going on to book two.
Namaste~

This was a different book for sure. I did like it overall, it was just confusing. It's meant to be that way, since the main character Vivienne doesn't remember her past before joining the circus and things are strange for her. The magic and faerie part of the story was intriguing and the book was short so it didn't really drag. I have a lot of questions that will probably be answered in the next book, so I'll have to check that out.

An interesting premise, but I wish the magic and set-up of the world was explained more. For example, does anyone know magic exists in this world? Is it an open thing, or is it only small communities like the circus that knows about it?

I did enjoy the mystery element of the murders in the beginning, but

Wasn't a huge fan of the romance. It started off really wishy-washy and I hated the whole 'is he dating my best friend or not' thing. Meh.

Doubt I'll be continuing with this series, but this was a fun fast read.

Warnings: graphic descriptions of violence and murder

Where can I even begin with The Immortal Circus: Act 1? Kahler has written such an amazing book, it's hard to pinpoint exactly what I want to talk about.

First of all, the characters. Every character is three dimensional, with the idea that you could reach out and touch them, walk down the street and bump into them, turn around and find them there, staring into your soul. Kingston is beyond my favourite character, a man with a past, well thought out that turned him into the man he is in the present time in the book. His character is so well thought out, and an immortal that truly sparks my imagination.

The descriptions. Kahler has done amazingly with these descriptions. I can see every scene ever so vividly in my head. Every scene can be imagined with such pristine detail, if I close my eyes, it's like I'm stood right in front of it. I cannot think of any downsides whatsoever to the description in this book at all.

The plot. Now, there are times where it's hard to pinpoint what the plot is, as it's very different from what it starts out with. As the story progresses, it seems to get fuzzy, and it's confusing a little. I found myself going back pages to reread passages and trying to piece things together, however, as the book progresses and things fall into place, you realise exactly what the plot was all along. Kahler does an amazing job of keeping the reader as confused as the main character sometimes. Intentional or not, it's an amazing feat.

The story itself. Well written, seeming to be well researched and also well created. Kahler has created a world within this book that I would absolutely adore to go to. The creation lingers in my mind and makes me think about what could happen to me if I ever went there.

All in all, I can't find one fault with this book at all. The Immortal Circus: Act 1 kept me hooked on every word. I woke up early just to read it, I skipped meals and ate so quickly it was probably dangerous for my health, just so I could come back and read this absolutely stunning creation. This is more than just a book and a story; it's an idea that lurks in your mind and keeps your attention, long after finishing the book. It lingers in the depths of your mind and then you remember a character or event and come filled with a longing that you could read the book all over again.

Kahler has amazing talent and it truly shines through in The Immortal Circus: Act 1. This books is heavily recommended from me, to anyone who enjoys murder, circuses, a bit of gore, and of course, the supernatural.

I have conflicting feelings regarding this book. So conflicting that I changed my rating of it at least three times within the last several days, though it stayed well within the "I didn't HATE it, I just didn't like it" range. It was okay.

I finished reading it, and I read the second one, and now I'm actually reading the third one, so you might think to yourself, "Well, you must have liked it!" Let's be clear: it was readable, although painful to get through at times. It is written in that style that is seldom done well: the first person present narrative. The main character is practically a blank slate throughout the book that you can project your own feelings of confusion at. She typically has little to add to the story, despite the fact that it's supposed to be all about her. It contained more than a few cliches, such as: main character has amnesia, main character running away from her past, characters being described as "perfect" or "sexy" with few additional details so you can imprint whatever you want on them, etc. Probably the most annoying part of the book is that you are attached to the narrator and the narrator knows little about what's going on. Hence, the reader is attached to a whiny, untalented, unremarkable girl somewhere between the ages of 16 and 21 who is as focused (if not more so) on having the hots for the magician as she is on the inexplicable murders happening within a circus where everyone is supposed to be immortal. Did I mention that Vivienne, our heroine, hardly emotes except to moon over her magician? I mean it. People are dying, she's being hit over the head with magic, she discovers that she and most others at the circus have magic powers, but whatever. It's just Tuesday.

"This book sounds TERRIBLE! Why would you say it's okay?"
It's like a pumpkin spice latte: good in theory, but a gastric disaster in execution. The concept is what drew me in to begin with. I was lured in by the promise of an impossible murder mystery in an immortal circus surrounded by fairies. Sadly, the execution was lacking. The best parts of this book were the backgrounds and background characters. The fairies, the magic, the settings were all fantastic. A.R. Kahler can actually give some decent descriptions about the circus, the fairies, and how the fairies are generally going to be dicks to all humans. They're dark, and I found that wonderful. I wanted the story to be more about them. And that is why I found this book to be only "okay" instead of dreadful or enjoyable. I obtained enough glimpses of the dark, deadly, dickish fairies to keep me engaged until the end of the book, though just barely.

I would be lying if I didn't say the cover was the first thing that attracted me to this. I mean, wow. It's darkly beautiful. The book itself, though, I have mixed feelings about. I really liked the idea behind it and the circus characters. I'm a fan of creepy circus stories and this book did not disappoint in that area.

The circus family was mysterious and interesting and frankly I could read about them all day. And the story itself wasn't bad either. It had me in suspense, it's creative and I was really interested in the plot.

But I did have a problem with the book. And that problem was Vivienne. She is the protagonist. She is one of the most annoying literary characters I have come across in a while.

The biggest, most annoying problem I had with her was her obsession with Kingston. She literally is never not thinking about him. It makes it really hard to enjoy the story when no matter what's happening, whether Kingston is there or not, she's thinking about how good he looks. And that's it. Never talking about what kind of person he is. All I can figure is that she likes him because he's sexy and even when there are arguments, people dying, important things going on she's constantly thinking "Kingston is so hot I want him."

Literally all this girl does is lust after Kingston, eavesdrop, whine and yell. She's an idiot and it was so annoying to have to see the story from her point of view. Everyone else in the story was interesting and the plot was intriguing but she almost made me hate it.

But you know, take Vivienne out and it's really good. It's a shame that the one person that drove me crazy was the one narrating the story. Half the time I'm internally yelling at her things like "Come on! I wanna know more about what's happening, not how hot you think Kingston is yet again! I get it! I know you're lusting after him!" I'm not even going to call it love because that's definitely not what it was.

But, overall, I really enjoyed the actual story but I hate, hate, hate, hate, hate Vivienne.

I read this in installments as it was a Kindle Serial & I enjoyed the format & the story. Every two weeks, I was eager to get the new part & read it on the same day. I thought the story was well told & while I found that I was yelling at the very end because I wanted more answers, I take that to mean that I was well hooked & still want to know more. That last revelation of Vivienne's had me almost up in arms wanting answers. After weeks of reading I was hoping for less cliffhanger & more of tied off story. If the story continues in another serial or regularly formatted novel, I will be reading it.

Such a fun, new (to me) fantasy, and intriguing story that drew me in. I never thought I would enjoy reading about magic, fae, and fairytale feuds. I can't wait to read the next act!

Finally effin’ finished! I’m finished and I STILL do not know how I feel about this book. I mean it was good. The story was good. The characters were nicely written. However, I couldn’t get past

Now Kingston. I have never, that I can remember at this moment in time, not fell for the hero right from the jump. But Kingston, I just couldn’t jump on his bandwagon. At first it was because

The story. Like yeah it progressed throughout the whole book but I just can’t find myself to really be attached to what happens. I mean I’m probably going to finish this series even with that being said.

But even after writing the whole review I still don’t know how I feel about this book. 😑

So much potential here but it just didn't do much for me. I enjoy books with fae as a general rule and I love all things circus being someone who partakes in the aerial arts myself. So this should've been a book made just for me.

The use of Mab as the ring leader of a circus was an interesting choice. There wasn't enough substance to her for it to work that well sadly. The use of contracts to control the performers was okay. The annoying amnesia trope less so. The inability to talk about things because of said contract also gets real frustrating.

Vivienne is our MC. She came to the circus recently and was running from... something only she doesn't know what that was. Viv appears to have no circus related skills and is only around to sell the cotton candy, although she doesn't really do that either. The insta-love/lust she has with Kingston was not good. He lies to you, is aloof and you think he is in a relationship with your new friend, girl slow down.

Death hurts.
It's not the release everyone says it is, not the light at the end of the tunnel. Death is falling down a staircase in the dark while covered in thumbtacks.

Overall it was fine, and the end left open some potentially interesting concepts. But there wasn't enough to this book for me to want to continue the series.

Vivienne joins the circus. She's running away from a troubled past, but she can't remember what it is. When cast members start getting murdered, she begins to learn more about the real magic that holds the circus together - fae magic. Cast members are supposed to be immortal, so how can they be killed? As Vivienne tries to figure out the mystery and keep her friends Melody and Kingston safe, she starts remembering parts of her contract and her past. She starts to question her sanity when lies seem to swirl around her and even wonders at one point if she is the killer.

This book was pretty intense at times. I liked the mystery aspect and thought the unveiling was alright. Vivienne bugged me at times with her teenage hormones, but in the end, she redeemed herself by figuring out the mystery (or most of it).

I'll start with the positives. The circus world that Kahler's created is beautiful, dark, dangerous, and sexy. There were a few creative and good ideas sprinkled through the book. That's about as much praise as I can muster, however.

Vivienne is not a good narrator or protagonist. She spends too much of the time indifferent to things that she knows are strange and even more time obsessed with a man that I think barely had character development beyond tall, dark, mysterious, tattoo, magic, and muscles. It was frustrating.

Now, granted, she spent most of the story enchanted and with her memories wiped, but, still, even when she had moments of clarity to question things she usually chose to focus on biceps. I prefer my heroines in supernatural stories to either be scared, in-over-their-head, and trapped in a way that seeps horror, or be aware of the world and enthralled with it because of what it is (that'd be a more honest approach these days; people who read these kind of books would love to find themselves in those kind of worlds). Vivienne just...existed most of the time and behaved erratically the rest of the time.

There was potential, but I won't be continuing the series.

Even with only the first few chapters released as of right now, I'm completely sold on The Immortal Circus. I may be a little biased, because I've known Alex for--holy shit--ten years, but he's always been a top-notch writer in my opinion. And his first 'real' book is no disappointment.

There's magic, there's circus tricks, there's a sense of dark foreboding. What's not to love? I'm eagerly awaiting the next seven installments while simultaneously cursing Mr. Kahler for publishing in this format. I hate cliffhangers. I want to know what happens next NOW, dammit. But the very fact I'm willing to put up with waiting should be very telling for this very impatient, super-judgmental reader.

3.25/5★

This was a pretty short book that took me a lot longer to read than it should have. The blame doesn’t lie entirely on this book, however. I read this digitally and ebooks tend to take me longer as a rule as it isn’t my preferred way of consuming media. That being said this story didn’t grip me right away. Even though the premise was interesting I found it took too long explaining the world-building and even upon completion of the novel I still feel there is a lot I don’t understand or grasp about the rules of the world. I found the premise really interesting which I won’t explain because even the workings of the circus and the reasons that brought each person there is technically a spoiler but it was a fresh take on a popular trope.

The second half of the book was more gripping and interesting. Many things are revealed but only in part which I understand is the author’s way of getting you to read the next volume. I do think too much was left unexplained though. I also felt the plot needed tightening up- there weren’t plot holes, per se, rather it seemed like plot weaknesses. There is a romance brewing between our main character and an important performer in the circus but it wasn’t fleshed out enough in my opinion. The tension and angst just wasn’t there and the two come together almost as an afterthought. I would have liked a lot more exploration of the relationship and to have seen it built on a more solid foundation.

It’s clear a lot more will be revealed in the next installment and I’m hoping the relationship between the two characters will make more sense because as it sits there is potential for the reader to to root for them but it needs a lot more work. I will be continuing on to the next installment and I’m hoping the book will be more solid as a whole.

Good idea, execution is so so

I would give this one 3.5 stars. The writing is very simple, not an overly detailed or complex story line. It is good if you want an easy quick read. Definitely reminds me of fan fiction. I do like the idea of the story and the progression of events is interesting. Even though I don't love the writing style, I'm planning to read the other two books because I am enticed enough to want to know what happens. Overall, good ideas, not the best execution, but worth it if you can look past that.

I picked this one up because I wanted a little Circus adventure. I had plans to go see Paranormal Cirque (It was fantastic. 10/10 would definitely recommend. If it shows up near your house, go see it!) and I was looking for a little book to set the mood.

This was OK. Decent. 3.5 stars. I didn’t realize that there were fae involved in this book. It was a surprise.

It didn’t necessarily scratch the circus itch the way I was hoping for. But it was decent.

Someday I may read the next book in the series but probably not soon.

3.5

In this interesting take on the Fae, the Winter Court is bound by rules within the circus. While the premise is interesting, the rules can be confusing and hand waved by the author telling the reader “you don’t get to know that quite yet.”
I assume we would learn more in sequels, but the ending felt rushed and I won’t be looking for the next one.

Strangely bewitching! Parts of this book really pulled me in but the remaining parts left me slightly confused, there was very little explanation throughout the story, especially at the beginning, and this just gave me an unhappy feeling of not knowing what was going on.

I really enjoyed this book. I figured I would because it's in the range of books that I normally enjoy—you know, the creepy paranormal, what-in-the-world-is-going-on kind of deal. This book had all of that. It wasn't incredibly creepy like a actual horror book would be. But there are real thriller moments in there, moments where you except something to just pop out of the bushes seeking blood. I really think the plot was well-thought out and brilliantly executed. Considering that this is the author's first book, I am pleasantly surprised and awed by his raw talent.

But, as it is with every other book I've read, I have complaints. I think the romance, given the situation, was warranted. But how the romance came to be was, at times, a little ridiculous to me. Unless it is later revealed that Viv and Kingston have some history, I don't understand how she fell in love with him so deeply. In the beginning of the novel, it doesn't seem that Kingston is all that interested in her. But maybe she was picking up on something I wasn't. I wasn't to appreciative of the fact that Viv was so adamant about getting Kingston, despite the fact that she thought Kingston and Melody were together. Like, come on, how do you even defend that? If she's really your friend, you wouldn't be lusting after her boyfriend. The end result is that, right off the bat, I deemed Vivienne as untrustworthy and I couldn't root for her and Kingston wholeheartedly until much later on in the book.

I also believe Vivienne was a little dimwitted and useless at the start of the story. And she always wanted to be involved when she couldn't really help anyone. She kept badgering people about feeding her information when the information was right there in front of her. Like (this didn't actually happen): someone dies and Vivienne's asking "what happened? what's going on? Tell MEEE!" and I'm like Vivienne, stop speaking. Seriously, she asks TOO MANY QUESTIONS! And some of the answers could have been found just by looking and listening.

But that's enough complaining. I loved Kingston. I'm not entirely sure why. I just know that there was something magnetic about his character. So maybe that's why Vivienne fell for him so quickly? I feel like he has just the perfect balance of boyishness and manliness. Sometimes he's playful and sometimes he's mature. And I think that combination makes for a really realistic and admirable love-interest. I love how the magnitude of his power is often implied. I don't think he gets the chance to really display that power in this book. But, you still know it's there. I hope in the next book, there's much more of him.

I absolutely hate Mab and Lilith. I really hope in the future books, they will be taken care of. Mab I can at least tolerate. But Lilith needs to go as soon as possible. She's creepy and silly and completely useless, especially when she wants to play rival to Viv for Kingston's love. I hope another villain comes in and she fades into the background. But I doubt that.

Kahler is an incredible story-teller and very creative. This story is so unique and original and you can just tell that this is his creation that he got from his own head. I do recognize that many of the characters like Oberon, Mab, and Lilith are references to folklore. But it's really incredible how he draws on folklore and makes it his own. He's a fantastic author and I look forward to much more from him, including Act Two of the Immortal Circus! =)
