Feral Outbreak

POST-APOCALYPTIC FICTION by Sean LiscomIn the wake of the cataclysmic events that reshaped our world in 2020, a sense of relief washed over us all. By late 2023, I think we were ready to just live life again. I know I was. It was a time to make new friends and put the past to rest. Rayne and I hadn’t known each other long, but we were building a solid friendship, nothing more. It was our common interests that sent us on vacation together to my remote cabin. What we didn’t, couldn’t know, was that we were on a collision course with the end of the world as we knew it. There was a new virus in town, and it was just making itself known when we left civilization behind. While the world was reeling from its effects, we were completely unaware of what was happening. For a couple of weeks life was great. Driving too fast on the side-by-side, loud music, great food, a little alcohol, and casual conversation distracted by beautiful scenery. About the only thing that would slow us down was the occasional deer in the road. By the time we figured out something was wrong, it was too late…..EXCERPTAt first, the store smelled like day-old gym socks left in the hamper for a week and wet cardboard. The further we advanced, the worse it became. We were passing by all of the rotting meat, fruit, vegetables, and a pair of severely bloated bodies. There was a third one, but it had already exploded its innards all over the floor in a black pool that was writhing with maggots and flies.Rayne wisely picked up the pace and pushed us through a pair of doors that were marked for employees only. The smell was slightly better back here. We worked our way to the back wall, and I found the loading dock doors where we’d backed the moving trucks in. Sweeping my flashlight along the wall and high ceiling, I found what I was looking for, sort of. I’d been hoping for stairs but found a wall-mounted ladder that led to the roof access. It was probably a forty, maybe fifty-foot climb to the roof access hatch.“There,” I motioned for the base of the ladder. “You gonna be able to climb that?”“Do I have a choice?” she tried a small smile as she looked up to the hatch above us.

“If a pack catches you, you’re as good as dead. They’ll just rip you limb from limb.”

This collapse of the modern world wasn’t brought upon us by aliens, an EMP, AI, or a foreign government. It was way more terrifying.

▪️August 2023, USA
▪️Vaccinations gone wrong
▪️Intelligent enemies
▪️Strange lack of animals
▪️Overdone descriptions of guns/ammo/trucks
▪️Hint at a future romance

“They do hunt, and they are capable of coordinating that hunt with others.”

There was WAY too much discussion on weapons and vehicles. Why do certain authors focus on this? If you want to tell readers how a particular gun operates, that is fine, but even the MMC at one point says something like, “this is all going over my head.”

I also found it odd for a story that takes place in a small farming community, there was very little descriptions of any kind of animals. Birds, cats, dogs, chickens, horses, cows? A few dogs, and some deer were mentioned, but that was it. What happened to all the animals?

There is some OTT cheesy personal drama, and some of the conversations felt a little forced but overall highly entertaining, crazy intense action scenes, with a cast of interesting characters.

Looking forward to the next in the series!

“We are an upgraded version of mankind.”

*Side thought: Do I now want a new 2023 Dodge one-ton 4x4, solid black with chrome bumpers, super dark factory tinted windows and a 6.7-liter diesel engine? Maybe, but only if I can add those swinging metal testicles off the back end.

Political agenda ruined the entire book

Writing a book is not an easy task and the author did deliver a book with only a few errors which is why I rated the book two stars instead of one or none. I'm also an avid reader who is very familiar with post apocalypse books and have read a plethora of authors over multiple decades and the biggest turn off is when an author allows one very narrow point of view on the verge of conspiracy theory gone wrong. It was very apparent that the author thought covid was joke along with the vaccine and perhaps that will appeal to some of his targeted audience but as someone who worked on the frontlines on Covid floors in multiple urban hospitals in multiple states and watched countless people die from covid the storyline came across as contrite, basic, and ignorant. I very rarely write off an author but this was my first and last book I will ever read by this author.

This had some potential as a decent story with an unusual zombieish-mutant population as a result of a pandemic. As with most zombie-type scenarios, there is no real science for this, but I'm fine with suspending that in the interest of the story. There were some minor editing issues, such as missing quotation marks, sentence structure and at one point David is just avid. The characters were on the one-dimensional side, especially the constant revisiting of Rayne's prior trauma from abuse. Is she a survivor as Shane said (I would hope so) or constantly reminded of the trauma (as her friend Jan insisted on doing)? I was very put off by the decision to ascribe the worst affects of this pandemic to people who were vaccinated for COVID and that the immunes were all unvaccinated. What a needless sop to the anti-vax crowd. It spoiled the story for me and if this is the start of a series, I will not continue.

Well written, with solid plotlines, and mostly likable characters. Good editing with very few typos, if any.

BUT... There is SO much unnecessary time and attention paid to extraneous issues that have little to no bearing on the storyline itself. This seems to be a problematic theme among male post-apocalyptic writers.

I did not need an ongoing dissertation regarding supply chain management - or maybe that's just me as I used to do that myself. But somehow, this particular career made the MMC "the boss."

I also didn’t need to read about how each and every strategy within the storyline was conceived, only to then read about the characters carrying out those strategies. It became too repetitive.

Why do we need to have explained to us, over and over, that food, medical supplies, and fuel are desperately needed to keep them alive? And... Oh! By the way, it's going to be dangerous, so be careful - and then have the characters do stuff that make them TSTL?

The in-depth and repetitive weapon and ammo descriptions were also wearying and bogged down the action.

The backstory of the FMC made me eyeroll, especially as it's discussed, ad infinitum. But, apparently, her backstory is what turns her into a "survivor." Too bad the author then shows her as being traumatized through most of the story.

There was a lot of opportunity there to build some character growth for the FMC and MMC, yet NONE of the characters showed any growth at all.

I could, and did, skip or skim several chapters of this book, and STILL knew exactly what was happening. It moved that slowly.

This book isn't horrible, but it is slow and can be boring at times. If you have nothing better to do to kill time, this isn't awful. I've read much worse, but I've also read much better books with great character development and world building.

With time and a more concerted effort at bringing characters to life, this author could be pretty great.

Action packed

Entertaining apocalyptic thriller with a lot of action. It's kind of funny the guilty virus was covid, it's clear where the inspiration came from.
I've finished reading the book today, June 28th 2023, and the initial date for this story is set on August 2023, so, let's see what happens in between, haha.
Shane and Reyne are the protagonists, two acquaintances determined to become friends in an off-the-grid location. While they spend time there, the world crumbles unknowingly to them. Life threatening surprises make them realize the life they've known is gone, so they have to trust one another to survive and prepare to last, but this proves hard to accomplish, danger is everywhere.
They make both good and pretty bad decisions and have to deal with the outcome, many times it will be bloody.
The action scenes are well written, also they are fast paced, I could imagine a movie, I had clear mental images while reading. Congrats to the writer.
I don't know whether this book is part of a saga, but it left the grounds for one. However, for me, this book works as a standalone as well.

One Great Read!

Totally enjoyed reading the book and could hardly put it down to go to sleep last nite! But I did! And I fouythat I liked how all the characters, both the good and bad interactions with each other kept my mind wondering what was going to happen next…but that’s what I loved about the author’s writing. It kept me interested!

An awesome surprise!

I bought this book on an impulse at the end of the work week & devoured it in one sitting! It was a fun read with great characters that you get to know, as they get to know each other. I didn't realize at the time that this was an author I had already read, loved the Ranch series as well & can't wait to see what comes next in this new world!

had potential to be super creepy and good but i could do with less about the big ol trucks and the slight political stand points and more with what is actually happening. The covid vaccine being what made the people survive the virus but also what made them crazy was a huge eye roll. I enjoyed it really up until the "zombies" were just basically normal and were just crazy with some upgrades. started off with a good idea and I was really into it, but it got boring.

“I guess if there was ever any doubt, there isn’t anymore.”
“Doubt about what?”
“They do hunt, and they are capable of coordinating that hunt with others.”

Set in August 2023, in and around the area of Winnemucca, Nevada.

Shane O’Neal, 35, lives in Las Vegas. He’s a manager at Walters Enterprises. Shane is super pumped for his vacation up by the Oregon border. He’s inherited his grandfather’s cabin, and he can’t wait to put it into use again (and to unplug from everything).

Rayne Andersen, also 35, met Shane through a work-related event. On a lark, she ends up accompanying Shane to the rural home.

Two weeks into their getaway, on a venture into the nearest actual town, the two turn their phones back on—and realize that the world has gone to Hell in a hand basket. Everyone is getting the flu, higher than 90% mortality rate, the government claims it’s a new strain of Covid…and it is not.

As they’ve grown older and their lives have changed, both Shane and Rayne (cute, right?) have become more or less…loners. Neither of them have a lot of friends.

So many guns. Such a blast. Guns, guns, and more guns. Much of the gun talk is helpful, especially for newbies. It’s important to learn the differences between an AR and an AK.

Rayne makes crucial contributions. It’s great to see a female in an apocalypse book who’s a Bad-Ass Bitch.

Strong action sequences and fight choreography. Good humor. Riveting strategies are often needed to overcome the undead obstacles facing them.

And they make new friends, like Angie, Kyle, Chase, and Janice.

“We are an upgraded version of mankind.”

(David) Prophet and his apostles are scary af. The stalkers, the ragers, different stages of infected/zombies…intriguing.

Also appreciate the amount of female zombies. Diversity is really lacking in ZA novels; super inclusive of the author.

Shane is not always a perfect shot, so good job with the realism. It’s so dumb when people just magically become Marksmen in apocalyptic settings. Like, we’re human, we make mistakes. It’s ok to show that in a book—as Sean does here.

The vaccine connection is a blockbuster.

Awesome standoff with Prophet and his squad.

What a wild, excellent ride. Action- and adventure-packed. Hell of an ending, with only a mild cliffhanger—for now. But so exciting to know that there’s more to come here.

“I hope you’re with me on this. Whatever ending might present itself; I hope you’re with me all the way.”

my favorite zombie book yet!

I’ve been on a major zombie book kick lately. This weekend, I was able to read 3, all from different series. This one was my favorite. I LOVE that the zombies still maintained some of their senses. I also LOVED the fact that the author spent so much time on the characters stockpiling supplies. It made the paranoid prepper inside me very satisfied lol. I found a few grammatical errors but that’s nothing compared to the Crawlerz series (which had errors or sentence fragments every other page).

I’m definitely going to continue reading this series. I liked the characters a lot—none of them were too cheesy. The prophet reminded me of Teddy from fear the walking dead, which was kinda fun.

I started reading this book at around 7pm last night and just finished it at 4pm today, despite working a full day and sleeping so it was a quick read.

The concept of the book could’ve been good but the author definitely did not execute it and give it justice. There were some grammatical errors and I definitely didn’t like how much dialogue there was, not enough sensory descriptors to keep myself interested so that was a letdown as well.
At one point there was a plane crash, they investigated finding out that the victims onboard were from the CDC and just so happened to find all of the paper work. Then just assumed that the lady onboard had a “psychotic break” like how stupid does that sound considering what Anna told you?
I had highlighted a quote, the author had written “A friend of the female persuasion.” Like who the fuck says that anymore? Old geezers that’s who 🤦🏼‍♀️

Readable but not too believable.

I took a star because, while the book is very readable, it inserts an uneducated anti-vax position, unforgivingly attributing it as a finding by the CDC. It is neither backed up nor fleshed out and is completely unnecessary to the story and is thrown into the narrative in a random spot. I took another star because the apocalypse is a bit too much like I Am Legend and the amount of great apocalypse supplies at the cabin were not believable, like the backhoe, and skills possessed by the small group of main characters. I liked the strong female characters.

AWESOME! DEFINITELY READ!

This was my first book with this author and I am so impressed! I truly enjoyed this book! I really liked the author's style and writing. I got sucked right in! I actually went and downloaded The Ranch because I enjoyed this book immensely!

This is currently the first, and only, book and is a standalone. It doesn't say BOOK ONE but I really, truly hope there's more to come! I will be watching for a second book! I would absolutely recommend this book for anyone 16ish or older. There is moderate cursing and ... zombies so violence but no intimacy and no intimate violence.

Good nearly to the end

I started out just happy that it wasn't another EMP story that has been done to death or worse, another stupid, implausible zombie apocalypse. The infected ragers were basically sick humans. I would have given it another star if the story hadn't paid respects to the antiCovid vaccine nonsense by out of the blue blaming the ragers on the Covid vaccine when there are multiple vaccines produced in very different ways and ignored the fact that large parts of the world still have quite limited access to any vaccines.

Excellent apocalyptic thriller!

Feral Outbreak begins with a different twist as to the cause and even better than that (IMO) is that the male protagonist is NOT ex-military or even a police officer. I enjoyed his learning curve adventures and mishaps. The leading lady is quite the strong female character, to be sure. All of the characters are very interesting and their struggles and strengths make for some entertaining action. I highly recommend it.

Lots of Action

Really good book. Yet, another take on the apocalypse. The characters are interesting. The storyline is full of action and the group of characters come together nicely.
The origin and full effect of this virus is unknown. The infected continue to change but unlike infected in other stories, these can think and some seem almost normal.
Our group faces a huge battle and find out that other survivors are in and around the small city.
The future for everyone is undecided at the end of the book.

Worth a read, slightly different take on the genre

Feral Outbreak is a cross between an outbreak survival book and zombie novel. Some background on the effects the pathogen has on neurochemistry, but are never fully explained as is common in the genre. The creatures are initially mindlessly violent but rapidly evolve throughout the book, giving it a feel reminiscent of Stephen King's 'Cell' or the Stanley Tucci movie Patient Zero in which some infected gain the ability to control over the others. Overall, worth a read if you enjoy the apocalypse/outbreak/zombie genres.

Totally scary!

The prospect of such an extraordinary event unfolding is genuinely unsettling. The narrative's intricate details and dynamic action sequences are captivating, complemented by a compelling cast of characters that bring the story to life with remarkable depth and intensity. The combination of suspenseful plot elements and well-developed protagonists creates an immersive experience that keeps readers on the edge of their seats, eagerly anticipating each new twist and revelation.

No too shabby

At first I hought this was going to be corny...Feral? Really? But then I was like, this is exactly how I would learn about the apocalypse...almost by accident. The ONLY issue I really had is that they didn't expand on their East coast friend as much as I'd hoped. Some of the battles/fights went on a bit long, but that was minor. Over all not a bad book. Is there more I haven't looked yet. I'd read more for sure.

Very good

This is one of the best stories I have read in the EOTWAWKI style. I liked the way it looked at an average guy, who gets thrown into the apocalypse. With no military service or any other training, he learned how to cope with his own shortcomings and self doubt. Granted he had some good friends who helped. This was very good and I would love to see more, even if he does go through vehicles like a demolition derby.

Freaking Awesome Book!!

I found this book when I was looking for zombie apocalypse books, and boy was I ever lucky!! I got pulled into Shayne and Rayne’s world, and my ONLY problem with this book is that I just finished it!! I loved all of our core characters, though there were times I wanted to slap the crap out of Janice! But seriously, thus book was awesome, and I truly hope the next book will be coming very soon!!

Action filled read

I truly enjoyed this book. I could barely put it down. I sure hope there is a second book to let me know how the characters survive their new normal. A must read for zombie/ apocalypse genre lovers. It's not your typical zombie and it is certainly believable which makes it all the more terrifying.

two day read!

I read this in two days. Literally hated to put it down and when I did it was like wringing my hands waiting until I could pick it back up. Where’s the follow up. There’s still more to this story, so much more. Give us life after the Feral Outbreak! Please! Great job!

A top story full of battles to survive

What a spectacular post-apocalypse! Shane and Rayne are great characters from the start but boy do the grow and evolve. The battles are pretty much constant between that small group and the overwhelming number of stalkers and crazies. The losses are heartbreaking. The ending is positive. I hope there's more!

Decent Zombie Tale

A good standard zed novel with a few good twists and turns for the main characters. A lot of technical dialogue about vehicles that slows down the novel. Otherwise enough gore to engage most readers. Believable enough to give you a couple of uncomfortable nights.

You take a vacation in the mountains with a pretty lady. Humankind is pushed to its limits. How far would it go to destroy the earth, destroy its people? Humans, under extreme circumstances, fight to stay alive. Will they be bad or good? The future will tell. It was a slow read. At times, it was thrilling that I couldn't put it down. This is the author's first book of post-apocalyptic thriller.

great story

Pretty good read. I enjoyed it all. I was sad when certain characters died and happy for others. So I became invested. I wanted a little more romance between the main two, but it’s not a romance story!
