Jaybird won a Finnish Comics award in 2013. Made by siblings Jaako and Lauri, Darkhorse published the English translation. Darkhorse's description says it is "Disney meets Kafka," and says it has "glimmers of hope and Chaplinesque silent-movie charm." !! Who are they trying to kid? This is an adult horror comic masquerading as a children's picture book: It's a large book format, with a sort of cute, sort of creepy bird kid central character, but younguns, don't be fooled: Trust that scary cover image as some indication of what is to happen.
It's a story of kid fears instilled by a manically crazy Mom, and a military heritage coming to roost (pun intended, thank you) for the little chick. Not that any of that is necessarily a bad thing, especially if you like kid-centered horror stories. Especially ones where we can gradually get to know more about what is going on than some of the characters. Either way, it's not brutal, not "graphic," it's atmospheric, it's more a kind of emotional abuse, not slasher fare.
I am not crazy about the art, though I always love me some silent comics/picturebooks, and this is nearly silent. I think it's pretty good, actually. Creepy. The old Victorian mansion, all the dusty military paintings on the wall, all the insects. . .
One review I read, by Hillary Brown, says, "The Disney allusion is apt only if they’re referring to the myths that ol’ Walt was cryogenically frozen after death. " Ha, I love that. She also says the book owes more to Charles Burns than Carl Barks, another comment I really loved.

Зовсім неочікуваний шедевр. Маловідома історія від фіннських авторів Яаако Ахонен та Лаурі Ахонен (ймовірно, що чоловік і дружина) просто накриває тебе своєю клаустрофобією, нереальною атмосферою саспенсу в кращому стилі Кафки й Беккета. І це все про маленького птаха (горобець?), який живе у великому будинку, піклується про свою матір і,що найбільш суттєво, ніколи не виходить на подвір'я. Забув додати, що з ним також живе маленький павучок, що мігрує з картин на картину, старих люстер, антикваріату. Увесь будинок - суцільний музей, проте зачинений від усіх.
Що буде далі - не розкажу, бо боюсь проспойлерити й загубити усю інтригу, а вона тут на кожній сторінці. Історія читається дуже швидко, сторінки самі гортаються, дихати стає важче, аж поки остаточно не настає катарсис. Після останньої сторінки стає лячно, бо, звісно ж, змальований світ замкненої пташки у великому будинку так нагадує наше суспільство. Обов'язково прочитайте, щоб переконатись хоча б в наявності фіннських коміксів. Міцних, як їхня горілка.

Atmosphere is on point, but I feel that the story stopped short and left all its plot threats hanging.

(3,5 of 5 for weird but interesting birdy comics)
I can't tell if I liked this comic. It's gloomy in all meaning of this word, bit claustrophobic and relatively short (well the dialogues are scarce here). The story is not bad, art is not bad, but there is something off about this comic. I can't really put my finger on it, but it's there, spoiling my reading experience. But it is still interesting reading and checking the art.

What a sad story about living in fear, and handicapping children with the fears of the parents. The art - really wonderful. Gentle and evocative in most frames, with scary pages as we learn about the Bad Birds. Easy to see why this graphic novel won awards for the artwork in 2013.

Esta es una obra a medio camino entre la fábula y la novela gráfica. Con muy pocas palabras y un notable esfuerzo en la ambientación. Jaybird es un pequeño pájaro encerrado en una vieja mansión de estilo Victoriano. Su comprensión de la realidad y su visión de lo que pasa en el exterior puede estar condicionada por alguien que dice quererle mucho. A pesar de lo que apuntan algunas reseñas, el final no es abierto. Los autores dejan muy claro en las últimas páginas si Jaybird se atreve o no a volar solo.

Geniálny komix. Depresivný, ale úplne úžasný. Milujem tento štýl ilustrácií, aj samotný príbeh. Knihu si prečítali takmer všetci členovia našej domácnosti, okrem anduliek. Tie na ňu len zvysoka púšťajú pierka, lebo nesedia v klietke... :)

November 23, 2018Tento komiks/obrázková kniha mi vzal slová. Ani viac než 12 hodín po jej dočítaní nedokážem nájsť výraz, ktorý by opísal pocit, čo vo mne po preložení poslednej strany ostal. Smútok? Zrozenie? Strach? Úľavu? Knihu preto nebudem hodnotiť hviezdičkami, lebo to nemá žiaden význam.
Nádherné, hoci väčšinou takmer monochromatické ilustrácie sa mi veľmi páčili, rovnako ako kontrast Sojčákovho sveta s tým vonkajším. Čitateľ odzačiatku vie, že toto nie je príbeh so šťastným koncom, no aj tak predsa len dúfa, že sa malému vtáčatku napokon podarí roztiahnuť krídla a vyletieť z hniezda...
Azda je tento príbeh až pritemný, ale zďaleka nie tak neuveriteľný.

Hieno sarjakuva! Melkein kuin kuvakirja, jossa tiheä tunnelma ja kipeä kertomus. Sarjakuva olisi ehkä pitänyt lukea myrskyisenä yönä keskellä pimeää syksyä, jotta olisi saanut kiinni tunnelmasta paremmin, eikä lukenut sitä rivakasti auringon paistaessa silmiin.

Da ich immer wieder sehr gerne zwischendurch zu Comics und Graphic Novels greife, bin ich vor einiger Zeit auch auf „Jaybird“ von Lauri und Jaakko Ahonen aufmerksam geworden. Hier hat mich besonders das wunderschöne und ausdrucksstarke Cover begeistert, sodass ich der Geschichte nur allzu gerne eine Chance gegeben habe.
Die Geschichte selbst kommt ohne große Worte aus und lässt die meiste Zeit über die Bilder für sich sprechen. Die Illustrationen strahlen allesamt eine düstere Atmosphäre aus und sind ausschließlich in dunklen Farbtönen gehalten.
„Jaybird“ ist schnell erzählt: Jaybird lebt gemeinsam mit seiner pflegebedürftigen Mutter in einem großen, verlassenen Haus, indem es immer eine Spur zu dunkel und zu einsam ist. Da seine Mutter sämtliche Fenster mit Brettern vernagelt hat, hat Jaybird noch nie das Tageslicht gesehen und weiß auch nicht, wie es auf der Welt wirklich zugeht, da seine Mutter ihm erzählt, dass draußen nur böse Vögel sind, die sie umbringen werden, wenn sie sich je draußen blicken lassen oder im Haus zu laut sind. Lediglich eine kleine Spinne ist sein ständiger Begleiter, die ihn ein Stück weit die Einsamkeit nimmt.
„Jaybird“ strahlt dabei insgesamt eine düstere und melancholische Stimmung aus, ist detailverliebt und zeigt dabei auch, was aus Menschen – oder in diesem Fall Vögeln – geschehen kann, wenn diese isoliert leben und keinerlei Bezug zur Außenwelt haben.
Kurz gesagt: „Jaybird“ ist eine sehr intensive und melancholische Graphic Novel, die das Thema Isolation und Angst perfekt anspricht und dabei mit großartigen und detailverliebten Illustrationen begeistert.

Pensaba que era la única que se había quedado "picueta" tras terminarlo, pero me reconforta ver el resto de reseñas que hay de esta novela gráfica. Es rara, muy muy rara, y aunque me gustan los finales que dejan lugar a la imaginación... se pasa de misteriosa, le faltan páginas.
Oscura y misteriosa, sin apenas diálogo consigue transmitirte la angustia y la tristeza de este pobre pajarito que vive "secuestrado" por su madre enferma, a la que tiene que cuidar y limpiar sus deshechos (las imágenes son bastante explícitas), y que no ve la luz del día pues ésta tiene absolutamente todas las puertas y ventanas tapadas (me recordó mucho a "The yellow wallpaper de Charlotte Perkins Gilman" QUE AMÉ).
¿Nazis? ¿Una realidad paralela? ¿Alucina el pobre pajarito?
Buscaré más información para ver si consigo comprenderlo del todo, pero me ha dejado bastante MEH.

Wuow. Un gran trabajo Tecnico que esconde una gran reflexión sobre el aislamiento, el miedo y la alteridad. Y además casi sin palabras. Una auténtica joya gótica con nexos al terror gótico o incluso a La Pell Freda de Sánchez Piñol.

„Jak Disney potkal Kafku“ - Ok, trochu silné slová,ale prečo nie. Keby to bola pravda, nepoviem nič, lenže toto má tak 45% existencionalizmu, ale Kafky 0%, Disney -100% (Kniha má rozhodne ďaleko od Bambiho ...)
Príbeh malého smutného vtáčika, ktorý žije v zadebnenom dome so svojou ležiacou matkou, o ktorú sa stará a má s ňou veľmi nezdravý vzťah. Jeho život napĺňa jeho vlastný strach - strach z vonku, strach z falošného zla. Sleduje obrazy svojich vznešených predkov, ktoré sú rozvešané po dome a spoločnosť mu robí malý pavúčik.
Aj keď je dej v podstate jednoduchý vynára sa mnoho otázok, ktoré však zostanú nezodpovedané. Na jednej strane to pridáva na hodnote príbehu a na druhej zas uberá. Trošku nedotiahnuté, ale aj tak záver vyvolá v čitateľovi mnoho emócí. Dalo by sa povedať, že celý príbeh je koncipovaný tak, že hrá po celý čas čitateľovi na city a miestami je to až nezdravo creepy.
Ja som cíťa, mňa to zasiahlo a po celý čas som chcela toho malého zlatého vtáčika objať a vziať ho z toho domu préééééč.

Wow that's the first time that happened in my adult life.... I finished the book, sat with it for a moment and reread the whole thing right after. People who say the story is too simple or confusing didn't take their time with it. If I had just moved on to the next thing, I would've given it three stars, but as I read it again I thought about how it could be interpreted in so many ways, on so many levels about the inner world as well as the outer, generational trauma, cultural trauma, the stories that trap us, maybe this is my own interpretation, but the ravages of divorce... Fascinating to be in the midst of slowly reading The body keeps the score, learning that parents who are emotionally distant and depressed correlate to insecure attachment in children, maybe more so than violent parents...
Anyway, I'm trying to become more aware of the background of the author/s as part of the reading experience and knowing that this graphic novel was done by a Finnish brother sister duo makes the work especially intriguing!

I picked this up one day from a stack of books that were to be cataloged at my work (I work in a library) and read it real quick because the artistry was so well done and appealing to me. I never expected the darkness and desolation that I would encounter. It was amazing and thought provoking. Definitely a book I could see using for a book club or discussion group, even if it is just a graphic novel. No questions are answered, no loose ends tied up neatly at the end. If anything, it leaves you with even more questions than you went in with. Weeks later and I am still in awe of the mastery of the illustrations for they are what carried the story. There is very little dialogue. I wish I could give you a definite answer about how the book really made me feel, but I am still trying to figure it out myself. All I know is it was wonderful.

Visuaalisesti kiehtova ja tunnelmaltaan ja toteutukseltaan sitä parasta kaurismäki -tyyliä. Tarina oli kerrottiin kuvien kautta erittäin intensiivisesti, jos kohta tarina jäi ohueksi, lähinnä tunnelman maalailuksi. Paljon tyyliä, vähän sisältöä. Suuret esivanhemmat eivät suvun viimeiselle vesalle ehkä anna yhtä pistettä enempää, mutta minuun tunnelmat toimivat. Ongelmaksi silti jää: Kenelle tätä voisi suositella? Ei vinkkauskamaa, mutta täsmäsuositteluina visuaalisen fiilistelyn ystäville?

Tenhle komiks není pro děti. A je naprosto úchvatně nakreslený. Příběh je slabší a existuje spousta jeho možných interpretací. Ale i kdyby šlo jen o důvod, proč nakreslit ty obrázky, mně osobně to stačí. Nedalo se to rozložit a za 15 co nejvíc natahovaných a užívaných minut bylo přečteno/prohlédnuto :-)

Pikku Närhi on tarinaltaan synkkä ja kuvitukseltaan uskomattoman hieno sarjakuva. Kirjan rytmi ja ruutujako on rauhallista, mutta siinä on elokuvamainen/mangamainen tyyli. Kirjan kuvitus on kaunista ja todella yksityiskohtaista. Myös linnut on toteutettu hienosti ja niissä on inhimillistetystä tyylistä huolimatta paljon lintumaisia eleitä ja ilmeitä.
Pidän ulkomaalaisista kansista suomalaista versiota enemmän. Niihin kiinnittää enemmän huomiota ja kansi on todella dramaattinen. Jos en olisi nähnyt kohti katsovaa kantta, en olisi todennäköisesti tullut lukeneeksi tätä.
Ehdottomasti lukemisen arvoinen.

The art is great and very well-thought! Dark and navy blue undertone are all over the pages to create that dark and fearful atmosphere. You are dreading to reach the end in case of gloomier endings for our little bird.
I was not captured by the writing but it must have been done on purpose.
I should have put a third star, as it is a book that will appeal to a broad audience. It deserves to be read by a lot of people thanks to its originality!
