Meet Serene Poole, a 16-year-old girl cursed with horrible luck. She’s a walking disaster and can’t go a day without getting hurt- sometimes the injuries are minor nuisances, but other times they are more severe, requiring stitches, casts and stays in the hospital. She doesn’t understand why she suffers the way she does, until one terrible night she learns the truth. In a past life she committed a sin- a sin so terrible that she's cursed by the Three Fates to have horrible luck until she pays off her karmic debt.
Meet Ryder Whyte, the 17-year-old boy next door who's always been a friend, and now wants to be more. But this isn't your typical love story, as every chapter has been woven by the Fates, who won't let their blossoming love go untested. For the truth will come out about her past sins, and in this incarnation she will have the chance to redeem herself, and maybe even for true happiness- if she lives long enough.
Kay Glass was born in Pottstown, Pennsylvania in 1985. She currently lives in Delaware with her husband, two children, and a house full of pets. When she's not writing she can most commonly be found with either her Kindle, a paperback, or a hardback book in her hands. In her spare time she likes spending time on the beach with her family, swimming, and playing video games.
I enjoyed the book though YA isn’t really my thing. Kay Glass is becoming a better writer with every work. She did a great job with the 16 year old ‘voice’. It was believable in attitude, feelings and dialogue. Serene’s relationship with her parents felt real, flawed, but then again, isn’t every one between parents and their teens?
I loved the Greek mythology bit. The belief in the Christian God seemed a bit tacked on. There are a million reasons why a 16 year old girl wouldn’t want to have sex and I would have liked to see one of those used instead of promises to god and purity rings. The back and forth between the loves went on a little long for me but the book is teen fiction – they are all over the place in real life, so why wouldn’t they be in fiction.
The book wasn’t paranormal though it did have that kind of feel, what with the past lives orbiting around each other. At 155 pages it was a short read, but good. I didn’t feel this was written for me but I would highly suggest it for teens. There were many mentions of murder and rape but never any vivid description, certainly not enough to get censored.
I just finished Puppet of the Fates and absolutely loved it! For being only 124 pages, this book is packed with so much detail, it's amazing. The main character, Serene, is a loveable and easily identified with character. Her lack of trust in people is something I think we all can relate to. She understandably lacks confidence and therefore doesn't see within herself what those who truly love her see, another attribute I think many people can identify with. The story is well written and the detail of The Fates is clearly accurate and well thought out. I particularly liked the way the story ended and how we are able to see how the characters play out 15 years later. I wasn't left wondering, like I have been in other stories, what happens with the characters. It has a certain finality about it that leaves the reader satisfied. As I understand it, the Strange Curses series will continue, but I don't think we'll see these particular characters again, which is fine. Puppet of Fates was well rounded and I'm looking forward to more stories in this series with new characters and different storylines. Kudos to Glass!

Do you think we are Masters of our own Destiny? Or do you think someone is pulling the Strings? Why do bad things Happen to Good people? Why do we feel sooo connected to THAT one person when odds are there should be NOTHING between you? Puppets of The Fates By Kay Glass explores this whole thought. Serene, a teenager is an accident waiting to happen, she has been in the hospital with broken, bones strains sprains .. you name it it has happened to her. Constantly being made fun of or ignored by friends she is surprised when childhood friend and neighbor Ryder asks her out. With this we follow the story as it unfolds how Ryder and Serene have been connected thru the ages and how "The Fates" (supernatural beings who decide the lives of everyone ) are pulling the puppet strings in their lives, and WHY all these bad things happen to Serene. Through a series of dreams and Nightmares Ryder and Serene find out whats happening to them. Can they get "past the past " lives to find true love? can they win over "The Fates" decisions in what must happen? Read this WONDERFUL book and find out. I LOVED this book the whole idea of "The Fates" is just amazing.. I give this book 5 puppet strings .. VERY HIGHLY recommended
This book was hard for me to take, I felt sorry for Serene, but I didn't. Usually when a book gets to me I put it down and wait to see if it's worth the emotion, but this time I just kept reading. I had to know what happened, to her, to him, to everyone. It makes you think, if there is a past life and you do something terrible, do you deserve to suffer through the rest of them? There were a lot of moments where I was upset with the Fates, the bullies, even Ryder, so I think it was well written, it takes a lot to get to me.
