Nora at her best!! But, then when isn't she? This is the second book in the trilogy and our over all story line is moving along wonderfully! I'm so thankful I didn't have to wait months between books. Kate has discovered a secret about her father that hits her at a low time in her life. It hits her physically, emotionally and professionally. But, luckily she meets Byron. He is *romantic sigh* so nice. This is a wonderful book! But, of course, It's Nora. 😊❤️
Just reread this book and oh, what a delight! Byron, Byron, Byron. Basically all of the below still applies; don't remember if I noted the humor last time as much as this, because some of the exchanges, especially that Kate has at the end when she's freaking out—so hysterical!! And is always a nice change when it's the hero who is in for the long haul and upfront about his feelings, as opposed to being a commitment-phobe; haven't read Roberts in a while, but if I remember correctly, that is more common with her heroes. Anyway, all around great read. Kind of wanted to slap Katie at the end there, but whatever. Will say it totally needed an epilogue though; I hate these abrupt endings where everything is resolved right on the last page. I know this is the 2nd in a trilogy and we see them again in Laura's book, but still ...
______________
(4.5 stars) Another great Nora Roberts book! Holding the Dream is book 2 in the Dream Trilogy and I haven't read - and don't plan on reading - book 1, just because Margo doesn't really appeal to me as a heroine. Kate was wonderful, however, and Byron was terrific - they were also great for one another, with Kate being so practical, logical, abrasive, etc. and Byron is smooth, a Southern-gentleman charmer, easy-going, friendly ... lol, they're just great together. The scenes in his house were really sweet, with the dogs and Byron always cooking for them and trying to get Kate healthy and make her take care of herself. Great book; definite reread.
Lauren, Kate, and Margo have been friends since childhood and feel bonded not only to their family home but also to the legend of a young woman who threw herself from a cliff. Lauren is the daughter of the Templeton family and a mother of two. Kate is the cousin who came to live with her family and is book-smart especially when it comes to numbers. Margo, daughter of the Templeton's housekeeper dreams of living a big life. Although we get glimpses of their childhood, it is their life as 30-somethings that is the main part of the story.
Holding the Dream is Kate's story. A successful accountant, Kate is bewildered to learn that she has been accused of embezzlement by her firm. The same crime that her father was found guilty of so many years ago. Luckily, she has her Templeton family to help her through this crisis. Oh, and she also has the newcomer to the Templeton business, hotelier, Byron, to provide Kate with a sexy distraction.
Honestly, I do feel that the second books in a Nora Roberts trilogy are by far the strongest. There might be some exceptions but for the most part, I find this to be true. I enjoyed the conflict, the friendship, and obviously the romance. I loved the banter between Kate and Byron and they just might be my favorite pairing of the trilogy. I have mentioned in my review of Book 1 that I know there is a formula to an NR trilogy. No surprise that we learn that Margo and Josh from Book 1 are already married and expecting their first child.
On the other hand, the Seraphina legend that was introduced in Book 1 is not as strong in this installment. I imagine that it will play heavily into book 3 and I look forward to that.
I somehow have misplaced this one - I know that I own books one and three of this trilogy, but couldn't find this one. So I was super excited to get a copy of this from Flannery when I was visiting this week. (thanks Flan!)
Like most Nora books, this one has a great family - these people are all so real, and so likeable. Kate is a super ambitious accountant, with all the stress and anxiety of a person who keeps all her emotions locked up. Byron, despite his unfortunate name, is a perfect foil for all of Kate's personality issues - just as she is perfect for him (of course!). He is funny and adorable in his pursuit of Kate, even though Kate tries to seem too busy to be interested, she is totally into his Southern charm. Kate goes through a personal and professional crisis in this book, and her relationship with Byron is shaped by their responses to these tumultuous events, with the help of her supportive and hilarious extended family.
Flannery - this main character is 27, if you are looking for an older main character...
This was enjoyable, but I did find Kate, who was supposed to be logical and practical, a bit too neurotic. Except for the "Southern" upbringing, I thought Byron was almost a carbon copy of Josh from the previous book.
Looking forward to Laura's book, I can't remember what happened, so it's going to be a surprise!
Adoro!
“I'm in love with you. Deal with it." – Byron De Witt
Now THIS is so much better! Unlike Margo's story, Kate's was such a fresh breath of air!
In the second book of the Dream Trilogy, Kate Powell, Laura's cousin and the practical one of the trio, is having some health issues. Issues that she repeatedly ignores and makes worse. But her health isn't the only thing going downhill in her life currently. After finding out that her father stole from his company when he was alive, she takes an even bigger hit when she's reported for practically the same thing. As she's trying to bring her life back to its former balance, Kate is about to find out that not everything has to be part of a plan - and trusting her body in the very capable hands of Byron De Witt seems like the most logical first step.
I have to say, I immensely enjoyed this one. Unlike Margo, Kate was spanky and feisty, with a good head on her shoulders and tons of dry wit in her arsenal. She didn't dream of fame and all that crap the blonde bimbo wanted, instead she wished for stability and intended to work hard to get it. Now that's the kind of female lead I can totally relate to in a book!
Next to her, Byron was the perfect man to stand and thrive - seriously! Because the guy was no Josh! (yes, I hate Margo's man, too) He was sweet, and gentlemanly, and used his heart in wonderful equality with his mind. Not only that, but he was also man enough to let Kate take the reins when he saw it worked out better, and yet go all "caveman" on her when she crossed the line. He was perfection and then some! And when he seriously started courting her - honestly, there's no other way to put it, judging from what he did to and for her - I nearly melted on my seat!
Together, they were a badass duo. He took care of her health and her relaxation, she made sure he wouldn't slack off - not that he often did. And they had so much in common, although it was subtle. I'm telling you, the perfect relationship! One that was meant to happen and spelled "forever" bright and clear! (if you're hesitant to believe me, just read this line of Byron's: “You're not beautiful," he said in a quiet statement that made her brow knit. "Why do you look beautiful when you're not?” - the man clearly loved her for what he saw inside, not because she was a fuckable piece of meat!)
I'm so glad this wasn't like the first book. I wouldn't have been able to take it had it been the same disappointment the previous one proved to be... Now, to review the third one...
“I'm a mess. I'm insane. I'm in love with you." – Kate Powell
Holding the Dream, the 2nd book in Nora Roberts Dream series continues with the story of Kate Powell, cousin and adopted daughter of the Templeton family.
Kate is smart, focused, totally goal-orientated and practical and nothing like the beautiful and glamorous Margo, who we met in Daring to Dream, now happily married to Josh and expecting their baby and not a dreamer like the sweet Laura, who finally divorced her cheating and thief of a husband and struggling with bringing up her two beautiful daughters.
Kate’s work is her life – neat, tidy, organized - and is looking forward to her promotion in the auditing company she works for. So who cares that she forgets to eat or that she eats Tums like …a lot of them. It’s all part of her dream. Making the family proud of her accomplishments.
Finding out the truth about her dead parents and accused of embezzling her clients, suddenly finds her world crashing around her.
Trying to deal with all the fall-outs, she begins working at the boutique that she’s a partner with Margo and Laura, and soon driving them crazy with her “management” style of the store. I loved the interaction and banter between the three. You feel the love and loyalty between them as strongly as they weather yet another obstacle in their lives.
Byron de Witt, sexy gorgeous and fabulous, is now working for the Templeton’s looking after their hotels in California. Kate is certainly not the kind of women he’s attracted to and he’s certainly not her favorite guy either – how can anyone trust a man who looks like him!!!!
Byron finds himself unexpectedly attracted to the prickly Kate…and being a loyal and honorable man he’s soon doing everything to help her clear and name and at the same time helping her in other ways…her health and of course her love life!!!![image error]
She slowly begins opening up to Byron and I was laughing my head off here….she’s totally into him but no way will she give up her control in the relationship….and when he tells her he loves her!!!!!!!! I was rolling on the floor!!! I did that a lot in this story…….. I loved her transformation from “no boobs” to the secrets of push-up bras and wearing sexy clothes and having fab biceps. Running on the beach!!! [image error][image error] Having great and hot and smoldering sex!!!! [image error] And the first time she cooks dinner for Byron - wearing an apron!!!!!! [image error][image error] Byron, you are a truly fabulous and amazing man…..to playing an incredible this lovely transformation of Kate’s!!!!
It’s the sassy, sparkly, witty and lively dialogue that just makes Nora Roberts’s books so so enjoyable. Here are just some lines I found truly memorable:
You’re not beautiful," he said in a quiet statement that made her brow knit. "Why do you look beautiful when you’re not?" "How much of that wine did you drink, De Witt?" "Your face is wrong." As if to prove it to himself, he came around the counter for a closer look. "It’s like whoever put it together used a couple of spare parts from someone else’s." "This is all very fascinating," she said impatiently, "But-" "At first glance your body looks like it belongs to a teenage boy, all arms and legs." "Thank you very much, Mr. Universe. Have you finished your unsolicited critique of my looks?"
“I think I’m beginning to like you, Kate. You are, I believe, an acquired taste, and I've always enjoyed odd flavors.” “That’s quite a statement. My heart’s going pitty-pat.”
“How often does this happen?” “None of your business.” She yelped in pain and shock when he pressed two fingers to her abdomen. “Do you have your appendix?” “Keep your hands off me Dr Feelgood.”
The character development is really great – these are people that have become your friends, with real obstacles that have you rooting for them.
I loved Kate’s story and I am feeling kind of sad that the next book, which will be about Laura, will be the time to say goodbye to these friends.
3.5. Enjoyed Kate and Byron and her friends. Was a light easy summer read. A little obvious who the culprit was right away so not much mystery here. I will also say that I thought Kate was a bit immature. A lot of outbursts and not sure I would have stuck around if I were Byron.
Orphan at a young age, Kate Powell was raised by her aunt and uncle, Susan and Thomas Templeton, the heads behind the Templeton hotel chain. They treated her like their own daughter and she never lacked for anything, but it left her with the feelings that she owe them everything and must always be the best.
When the hardworking and pragmatic accountant suddenly find herself accused of commiting fraud by her employers, she find solace at Templeton House and Pretense, the retail store she co-own with her two best friends. And no one is more surprise than Kate herself to also find comfort in Byron De Witt's arms; Templeton latest manager.
Byron see Kate as an enigma. One he intend to resolve and he doesn't hesitate to tell her. But he still can't understand why his attraction to her is so strong when she's the total opposite of his type. As for Kate, she sworn off men after an ex played her for a fool. The first time Kate met him, she found him annoying but it's only because she wasn't ready to deal with the awareness he make her feel, a strong feeling she never felt for any man before. But Byron will push down those walls with his understanding about Kate's prickly personality, her smart mind but her fear to show vulnerability. But the blunt woman who like to stay in control might be not as predictable as we thought and could still surprise everyone with her spontaneity.
While I liked this book, I totally get why it was my least favorite of the series. Could be because at first, Kate and Byron was both more brainy characters (nothing wrong with that but I prefer when the MC have opposite personality traits), but it's also for the fact they didn't have Josh and Margo's history nor did I felt the same potent sexual tension between them as between Laura and Michael. Like Margo, Kate was not your typical perfect heroine. I understand why some people might think Kate's attitude was annoying but maybe it's easier for me to forgive her flaws because I saw myself in her outlook on life and love; like how she doesn't deal well with strong emotions and prefer to walk away than put up with the confrontation. To me, Byron was like an old-fashioned hero, you know, like the ones in those classical romance from the 1800 (you know the ones I'm talking about ;p) but he was not as stiff or too proper. So saying it was my least favorite does not mean I didn't have a great time with this book.
Overall - an ok book... However, I liked it much, much less than the first one. Even though Margo (heroine from the first book) was selfish and annoying at times - I liked her much more than Kate. Kate seemed like a TSTL (too-stupid-to-live) heroine, that kept "cutting off her nose to spite her face". She constantly made bad choices and said stupid things, while trying to prove herself! All she ended up proving was that she was neurotic, self-centered, and undeserving of an amazing guy such as Byron!
Kate's anorexic tendencies got really annoying... She never seemed to eat anything or want to eat anything... she eyed food with disgust... Then when she got seriously sick - she kept ignoring all the symptoms! I understand that there was that hospital trauma (that was kind of glossed-over), but had she acted like a normal, responsible adult, it needn't have come to her having to be rushed to the ER.
Her breaking things off with Byron was absolutely ridiculous! She was angry that he "played her" by being a nice guy, doing everything right and making her fall in love with him!? Since when did being a nice guy and a perfect gentleman become a bad thing??? Anyways, she refuses to marry him because "you didn't marry someone you didn't know even a full year...maybe, just maybe, after two years, after you've worked out the kinks in the relationship you began to discuss the possibility of a marriage. You had to outline what you wanted, assigned the roles and the duties, who handled the marketing (??), who paid the bills, who took out the trash...And what about the children?! ... What about assignment of responsibility?? Diapers and laundry? Doctors' appointments? If you didn't nail down the details of responsibilities you had nothing but chaos..." She sounds like a demented lunatic!!! Am I to believe that a normal person thinks and talks like this?! She's a freakin' robot!
So yeah - while i liked the book overall - Kate was one of the most annoying female characters EVER! If I were Byron, I would have had her committed!
The story of Kate, the practical, down to earth third of the trio, and Byron de Witt, a southern gentleman with whom she shares a strong attraction.
Kate behaves too much like an idiot for a supposedly smart woman, insisting that she can handle all her problems on her own, pushing the people who love and want to help her away and wallowing in self pity among other things.
Byron is a bit manipulative, used to solving problems and handling people, and that pushes Kate's buttons since she insists that she will not be handled and doesn't need him to solve her problems. Although I understand her objections up to a point, she was too stubborn and childish at parts and lost the few points she managed to get when she reacted completely irrationally to .
By the end of the book I still didn't grow to like Kate, who despite having changed for the better, remained an idiot who would be alone if Byron didn't have the patience of a saint.
I really hope reading Laura's story in Finding the Dream doesn't make me dislike her as well...
I really loved this book. Perhaps it's because, at times, I could see a part of myself in Kate, The tomboyish, practical, sarcastic member of the trio. I made a similar decision in my own career, and I absolutely love the dynamic between Kate and Byron. Me, personally, I would have liked to have seen a bit more of the investigation. It seemed to wrap up a bit too quickly for me, but overall, I liked the book a lot. I really hope there's a decent amount of Kate and Byron in the third book. I want to see how their relationship flourishes. I see a lot of bickering and hot make-up sex in their future. And for Kate's sake, a few cold, wet, puppy noses on Byron's butt to wake him up in the morning!
This book hasn't aged that well in my opinion. It bothers me that violence is treated as acceptable or cute if it's the female hitting the male. I was super annoyed that it was "ok" for her to punch him because she's weak and he's strong. Then she eyes up the kitchen knives even though she wouldn't actually use them on him...she thinks. And the reason for her freak out? Because he had the nerve to get a completely innocuous call from another woman! She doesn't even bother to ask who it was before assuming he's a total scumbag. Grow up. You don't get a free pass to act like a dick because you're under stress.
Rating: 1 Star!! Review: Did i really just rate a Nora Roberts Book 1 star?! Sadly yes i did. To be fair this was the 2nd book in this series that ive read so that might have something to do with it too but at any rate, i disliked this one very much!!
The Characters were OK but i could not stand how a few of them contantly argued with each other which i think is why i didnt enjoy this one so much.
The Setting was OK but could of been better described.
Overall an OK Book 2 in this series but could of been way better!! Not sure ill read more in this series but i do plan to read more by Nora Roberts in the future!!
I thoroughly enjoy re-reading novels by Nora Roberts from her earlier years. The writing is witty and realistic, the characters human and fascinating, and the stories fully engaging. This story had all of those features and the added bonus of being part of a trilogy, so the reader knows there is more to come. :-) Kate has the kind of personality that is not easy to love, yet as the story progresses the reader grows very fond of her. Byron may seem a little too perfect but the reader sees his flaws as well. Their romance is one to savour.
A great story that I will no doubt read again some day. It was a perfect antidote to worrying about the pandemic!
What a pill Kate is! Poor little thing. I totally understand the anxiety and the wanting to control things. But as Laura pointed out, life is messy and things can't always fit into an orderly little box or plan. I'm pretty sure Byron is my next book boyfriend. He is just so perfect. He is so good at dealing with Kate and the entire family. I love his disposition. Love this installment. Can't wait for Laura's story.
My beautiful late nan owned every single one of Nora’s books. So when she moved in with us for her last few years we spent the time reading our way through every single one together. Granted they are not the type of books I like to read, but they were still really good and sweet.
I enjoy Nora Roberts' trilogies, but sometimes there's one sister or brother I find it hard to relate to. That was the case with Kate in this entry in the Dream series. Plus it was really obvious who the villain must be. Still, I liked finding out what happened to everyone from the first book and am looking forward to the story continuing in the third.
