Fresh out of jail and hopeful his troubles are behind him, Valentine Slade returns to his hometown of Lott, New Mexico. But for Val, his troubles are just beginning. His girlfriend’s State Trooper brother comes after him with a shotgun, his mother Caroline has been diagnosed with a mysterious form of terminal cancer, and a mutilated corpse is found on the road outside his house.

And there’s something more…something…unnatural out in the desert…something that is not human watches and waits, luring Val deeper and deeper into a terrifying mystery that may very well be tied to otherworldly intelligence…and tied to Val himself. To find the truth Val must delve into nightmares he’d rather forget, horrors he’d rather not know, and into places where there is nowhere to hide.

We are not alone. There is no escape from the truth. No escape from...TRINITY.

If it screams, squelches, or bleeds, Kristin Dearborn has probably written about it. She revels in comments like “But you look so normal…how do you come up with that stuff?” A life-long New Englander, she aspires to the footsteps of the local masters, Messrs. King and Lovecraft. When not writing or rotting her brain with cheesy horror flicks (preferably creature features!) she can be found scaling rock cliffs or zipping around Vermont on a motorcycle, or gallivanting around the globe.

I won this novel from Darkfuse during an online Meet the Author event.
This book was quite unique; I don't think I've ever read anything quite like it. It was a horror/sci-fi trip.

The story starts off with our protagonist Valentine getting out of jail. Val was sent there because his girlfriend Kate was underage and Kate's brother Rich was not too happy about their relationship, even though he used to be best friends with Val. Then things get weird.

Almost immediately after he returns to his mother's mobilehome, a humming in Val's head begins. Then Val begins sleepwalking. Then people start turning up dead.

Interspersed throughout the main narrative are excerpts from a book called "Trinity" which involve a woman being interviewed regarding her alien experiences. These clips slowly begin to reveal a lot more of the story.

I don't want to spoil anything, so I'll just wind it up and say that I enjoyed this book. The ideas are fresh, which is impressive because much of the book explores theories that can be seen on Ancient Aliens every day on the History Channel. To shed new light on these old tales and to add her own spin shows that Kristin Dearborn has talent. I look forward to reading more of her work in the future.

This one sat on my TBR pile for years before I read it and while I found the story pretty interesting, I wasn't interested beyond that and I doubt that this plot will stay with me very long.

The writing was competent in a narrative way, but there was little to no character development to make the story matter to the reader. In the first page we find out that the main character is getting out of prison and we are grudgingly furnished some details but nothing else. The circumstances leading up to him going to prison in the first place is a major issue for several of the characters that create key conflict points in the story, but we get nothing. In fact this is true for several major plot lines. Filling in this detail is what takes a narrative and makes it into a story. Every character has a backstory and I think you need it for them to really come alive.

That's my gripe. Some folks may disagree.

It was an interesting story about humans, aliens and experimentation on mixing their dna. I found it a little bit boring at first but it grew on me and I couldn't stop reading. The end was very open and rather unexpected - I hoped it would end well but when thinking about it, there can't be a happy ending for Val who would always carry his alien dna. Still he didn't deserve being put into a psychiatric ward and I fear for pregnant Kate...

A very different take on the alien encounter scenario. The tone is dark and somewhat visceral, but also edgy. It is a very hard book to put down once started and I read this in 2 sittings. The characters are strong and well "rounded". On the whole for a first novel TRINITY is a very very good novel. Buy and enjoy.

I don’t recall reading any novels about aliens in the recent past, so I suspect that’s one of the main reasons I was drawn to this debut novel. I’m always looking to read something different than the norm—first it was wizards, but then everyone began writing about them. Then it was vampires, and then zombies, faeries, fallen angels… but I really haven’t come across aliens. Until now.

Dearborn has created a very enticing story. With a hero fresh from prison, a dying mother deemed the town nutcase, and a police force ready to lock him up at the first sign of trouble, Val has a lot on his plate. Throw in the mysterious deaths of his enemies, a panther like alien prowling the premises, and two alien races vying for Val’s attentions, and you’ve got a very intriguing story.

I really liked the idea of the different alien groups, but I did find it a little difficult to keep them straight. Though they aren’t similar in appearance, they both tend to do and want the same things, so I kept forgetting who was the “good” race and who wasn’t. We learn about them from a story being transcribed into a novel named Trinity, and though I found this very interesting, it confused me when it first picked up. Let’s see if I can explain it clearly. Trinity (as in the novel we’re reading, not the novel referenced inside this novel, which is ALSO called Trinity) begins with Val leaving prison, and the subsequent chapters that follow focus solely on his story. But then there comes a chapter referencing an interview between a doctor and a female who claims to have been abducted by aliens—this is a chapter from the book Trinity (which is the “book” inside the book). As the doctor is transcribing his findings with “alien abductees,” he doesn’t give real names, so it took me a bit to figure out who the woman was, what she was talking about, and how Val related to it all, because all of a sudden the story wasn’t about Val at all, but a woman with boyfriend issues. Of course, once I did figure out the reason behind the random-like interjections of the transcription, it all began to make perfect sense, but it was such a jarring way to bring together two separate stories that, originally, I was extremely confused. So, keep that in mind when reading this book. There is a “book” within the book that references different chapters, focusing on a woman who is quite important to the story. I won’t tell you who she is, but you’ll probably figure it out right away, unlike me, as you now know that there is what seems like random stories throughout the novel.

This novel is definitely otherworldly, as it should be, but even so, some of it seemed really weird to me, and I definitely wanted more background of the two alien races pinpointing Val. I think perhaps that would have made it a little more understandable, but it’s also completely feasible that I just missed something important about the two groups, and so found them too mysterious (as in, not knowing enough about them).

I liked the characterization a lot, but did find that Val’s girlfriend was a little daft, as it were. Her solution to everything, like all the dead bodies popping up, drove me crazy, and the fact that Val just went along with it made me want to smack him upside the head, but then again, I guess, having just gotten out of prison, he wouldn’t be too eager to have the police all over his yard due to the many deaths taking place around him…

Overall, Trinity was a good read and I’m excited to see what’s next for Dearborn. I’d recommend Trinity to any sci-fi buffs out there, or to anyone looking for something completely different. This is it.

3.5 stars.

In some parts reminiscent of The X-Files and Invasion of the Body Snatchers, Trinity has a good sci-fi base at its core. While the storyline itself doesn't add anything new to the genre - grey, black-eyed aliens who abduct humans for experimentation, another alien race who use humans as host bodies and an alien monster out in the desert, what makes this book stand out is the characterisation.

An ex-convict might have seemed a strange choice for the 'hero' of a novel, and I did wonder whether he was going to be sympathetic and whether I could relate to him. The truth is, I did. Val was a victim of circumstance more than anything, with an alcoholic mother who the all the town folk thought was crazy with her claims of multiple alien abductions, and an unknown father, he's had a hard life.

He was in jail because he had sex with his then underage girlfriend. I don't know what age the woman in question was, so I can't judge on that score. It would make a difference if she was thirteen say, or seventeen. I don't know, it wasn't referenced in the book. From a country where the age of consent is sixteen, I do find it strange to see a seventeen year old as underage. We're also allowed to drink alcohol at eighteen, so the over twenty-one rule seems way out there as well. But, anyway, you get the impression that his jail sentence was rather harsh, although I suppose it would depend on where you live and your own cultural stance on such things.

It's when he gets out of jail that the trouble really starts for Val. He hears a strange humming in his head, he sleepwalks out to the desert and wakes up covered in blood, with no idea how it got there. When the mutilated corpses turn up, the reader and Val are both left wondering if he had something to do with these strange murders. His girlfriend Kate sticks by him, but she suspects him as well and wants both of them to leave and go to Santa Fe. Val doesn't want to leave his ill mother and they both know they won't be going anywhere until she dies. Val's guilt at wanting to leave and knowing his duty to stay is handled very well and you never felt that he was just being an awful person, he was just torn in both directions by the two women in his life - his mother and girlfriend.

The book is fast-paced and quite a page-turner, you need to keep reading to see what happens next. I was a bit confused at first when I got to a section that had the header "Extract from Trinity" and I thought to myself, "Isn't the book I'm reading called Trinity?" Yes, it was, but it has sections from another book called "Trinity" within it. I think I would have called the book within the book something else, not the same title as the one being read. Some scenes are a little bit gory, so not for the faint of heart.

Ms. Dearborn delves deep into the heart of her characters, even the alien ones, and it is this, along with the excellent prose, that makes it more than just another tale of contact.

If you're a fan of traditional sci-fi, with a little bit of horror thrown in, then give this one a go.

Trinity by Kristin Dearborn
So this story starts off pretty, well, slow. It then suddenly escalates into action very abruptly and without much warning. However, the plot twist at the end where the main character learns that he is in fact an alien that was born to help a race of aliens breed with another race to absorb the second race's mind powers, was interesting, however, it wasn't very mind blowing. Throughout the entire book it is hinting at this possibility.
Another thing that I didn't particularly like about this novel was the excerpts from another authors book. I felt that this could have been made into either the introduction, or just included at the end. The story really didn't benefit from these excerpts. It also seemed very amateur-ish and very simplistic despite the fact that it was written for an older audience which I assume based on the graphic nature of the language and descriptions.
Some of the things I did like about it were the paths of discover throughout the book. Not only was the character discovering things about himself, but the reader also discovers things about the characters, and well it allows the reader, if they can get into the story, to question their view on reality. Maybe if a younger person read this novel (like a 7th or 8th grader), after it has been edited somewhat for graphic language, the point would be better accepted.
Unfortunately, overall, I don't feel as if I would pick this story up and read it again. and thus, I only gave it two stars.

This is the story of Valentine (Val). Newly released from prison, he has to cope with life on the outside and his mother near death from cancer. Ever since he got back he has been hearing a hum that gets worse as he gets nearer an old mine, and why does he keep sleepwalking and waking up in the desert? When bodies start turning up horribly mangled near his trailer he knows he has to get to the bottom of things. His journey to find the truth will turn out to be far more horrifying than he could ever have imagined.

I liked this. It was a different sort of alien story with a shot of horror laced through it. It was fast paced and action packed. The characters were solid and the storyline was tight and tense. It turned many of the alien myths upside down and I liked that the author was unafraid to challenge things. This was a well rounded and well written debut story from a promising new writer.

First of all, let me say how much I loved this new Darkfuse title from Kristin Dearborn. Hard to believe this is her debut novel ! Like many of you, there’s just not enough hours in the day that I can allot to reading for pleasure. Once I started Trinity, it commanded, no...more like demanded, that I drop everything and just read, I was hooked in early on.

This story of an ex-con and his girlfriend’s unlikely entanglement in a breeding program between two different ancient alien races isn’t one you’ll soon forget. Gritty New Mexico locales, dirty cops, finely drawn characters, alien abductions, blood-n-guts and even a space puma...What’s not to like ? Novels about “visitors” aren't my usual fare because I tend to go for more traditional horror novels but I feel that this brilliant novel has helped turned me on to the genre and I can’t wait to see what Kristin Dearborn comes up with next. Maybe a sequel ?

This turned out to be a very unique read! The author led us down several paths to the finish line and did a wonderful job with this debut novel!

Valentine, a recently released convict, jailed for sex with a minor (his girlfriend, Kate, who is still with him) comes home to a dying mother, town bullies who are against him, and a strange buzzing in his head. People are being killed all around him, he is having blackouts and sleepwalking. His mother has always claimed she was abducted and impregnated by aliens. Could this be true? Is everyone who they claim to be? Are aliens real? Who is killing people connected to Val?? Has Val gained supernatural powers?

If you like sci-fi, mysteries, a little darkness, and sitting there calling people names for being so small-minded all while rooting for the down-trodden, imperfect good guy, try this!

This edition was provided to me by Netgalley and Darkfuse in exchange for an honest review.

Veteran writers have much to learn from Kristin Dearborn’s debut novel. The tone is edgy, dark, and visceral—a contemporary noir crime story served up with alien abduction and a twinge of horror. Characterization is strong and memorable and she pulls no punches when it comes to action and violence. The complex back story is deftly delivered with a word or sentence here and there—no numbing info dumps or gratuitous flashbacks. The hum of suspense starts on the first page and never lets up. Even though I’ve never been to the Southwest, I found the setting vivid and fully realized. Weaving these elements into a functioning whole is a difficult task for any writer. TRINITY is a remarkable achievement for a first novel.

Let's get down to the grit of this book, right here and now. Trinity by Kristin Dearborn is a fantastic, gripping novel by a gifted author. The story begins by building tension among a handful of characters, each of whom possess phenomenal attributes. Val is your every man. I identified with him immediately. After the beginning section of the story, you're taken on a horrific ride that fills the imagination. I'm not usually a fan of the Sci-Fi or Horror genres, but Trinity tempted me and scored. The author has a clean and interesting genre style that reads fast and furious, and I was left wanting more. I could go on and on, but that's the gist. I'm really happy with the price and believe I got a great eBook added to the phone/tablet collection. You won't go wrong with Trinity.

Tortured mess.

I don't know, maybe you have to be ufo nut to appreciate the book.
I read more than half a book and still didn't understand all the business with alphas, betas and two types of aliens. There is an explanation later on, but at that point it's more like why do you even bother now.

Most of the plot twists are just so convenient, the book reads more like a transcript of failed B movie script. Trying too hard to be all mysterious and full of suspense.

At least the ending was sharp, quick and to the point.

Not really my thing. Well written, good characterization, and so on, but fairly violent and death-filled, and rather depressing. Just not quite my thing.

If you like dark (bordering on horror) sci fi, you'll quite probably like this.

A very unique book. I enjoyed it a great deal. Kristin did a wonderful job making you see, feel and totally relate with the characters. Plus certainly left the door open for a second book or series. Think (hope) we will see more from this talented young author.
