J.A. Huss never wanted to be a writer and she still dreams of that elusive career as an astronaut. She originally went to school to become an equine veterinarian but soon figured out they keep horrible hours and decided to go to grad school instead. That Ph.D wasn’t all it was cracked up to be (and she really sucked at the whole scientist thing), so she dropped out and got a M.S. in forensic toxicology just to get the whole thing over with as soon as possible.
After graduation she got a job with the state of Colorado as their one and only hog farm inspector and spent her days wandering the Eastern Plains shooting the shit with farmers. After a few years of that, she got bored. And since she was a homeschool mom and actually does love science, she decided to write science textbooks and make online classes for other homeschool moms. She wrote more than two hundred of those workbooks and was the number one publisher at the online homeschool store many times, but eventually she covered every science topic she could think of and ran out of shit to say.
So in 2012 she decided to write fiction instead. That year she released her first three books and started a career that would make her a New York Times bestseller and land her on the USA Today Bestseller’s List eighteen times in the next three years. Her books have sold millions of copies all over the world, the audio version of her semi-autobiographical book, Eighteen, was nominated for a Voice Arts Award and an Audie award in 2016 and 2017 respectively, her audiobook Mr. Perfect was nominated for a Voice Arts Award in 2017, and her book, Taking Turns, was nominated for an Audie Award in 2018. Johnathan McClain is her first (and only) writing partner and even though they are worlds apart in just about every way imaginable, it works.
She lives on a ranch in Central Colorado with her family.
FUCKKKKKKK!!! I FUCKING CRIED SO FUCKING HARD, THE TEARS ARE STILL DRIPPING DOWN MY FACE!!
Review to come soon along with RANGE once I've calm down.
EDIT: The original review is posted on Future Suns
After reading Range and after screaming 'F*ckkk' in my room (excuse me for my poor language), I went straight to reading The Magpie Bridge.
What surprised me the most though, was the fact that Tier wasn't even worried about what's happening to Junco in the Djed Pillar. Then I figured that everyone was angry at Junco for betraying their plan. But they didn't know what was going on until the dissipation happened (again, you have no idea what I'm talking about if you haven't read book 1, 2 & 3).
I was torn inside, heartbroken as Tier went to look for HOUSE. What made it sadder was that HOUSE was just a kid. And she went through all of the pain that Junco went through.
As Tier looked after HOUSE, I felt so sad that I decided to cry (again). Here's a little spoiler on why I cried:
"I turn to HOUSE. 'Annun is a friend of Junco's, he'll watch ya so you can build down by the water, ok?' She shrugs and begins bossing him around, telling him to take some pails and shovels, and then proceeds to drag him down to the water by the shirt. To his credit he follows and doesn't even balk. I watch her for several minutes, smiling, before I realize that I'm still standing in the middle of the cabana. 'You're a natural, Tier.' I look over at Lucan as I take my seat and grab my beer again. 'A natural at what?' 'Fatherhood,' he says. 'It suits you. Really, it does. It comes easy. Not like me.' He stops and I figure we're both thinking about his attempts at parenting."
Now, if you had read book 3, you would understand why that was so sad. HOUSE isn't Tier's daughter, but he looks after her like she is. Now when I got to the end, I had a full-blown tantrum after reading the last sentence. Tears kept pouring out and I couldn't stop.
I would give you a bit of spoiler but then everything would be spoiled. So, no I won't.
I love this whole series, and after finishing The Magpie Bridge at nearly 4 o'clock in the morning, I had to message J.A. Huss straight away to ask if there was going to be a fifth book, and she said YES!!. HOLEEE CHRISTO!!!
Turns out the fifth book will be out on the 2nd of December (US or UK I don't know). I am definitely putting the date on my IMPORTANT DATES notes, and I am definitely hanging around for the blog tour of the fifth book if there is one. I wish I'm going to be a host but......depends. Still have school and all that stuff. Oh how much I want to be Junco so I don't need to go to school. LOL. But no, Junco feels so much pain that I think I might kill myself before feeling all of it.
Anyway. I CANNOT WAIT FOR THE FIFTH BOOK!! Now, I just need to go beg my mum to buy me all four books in paperback/hardback. Wish me luck!
*Sigh* this has not been my series. But, just when I thought I would DNF this one, I picked it up and got sucked in and finished it. So overall, I give it 2.5 stars, leaning towards 3, rather than 2.
I think the thing is, I don't think I really like the characters. I don't dislike them. I just could give a flying... Like Junco is idk in this tower thing and I don't know what that means and I don't care. The flop side of that is, I've had a really hard time following the details in this series. I think it's just too Sci-fi for me. My head doesn't wrap around it. I will, someday, read the 5th book, because I'm way too far to not finish the series. But i don't even know what to hope for in that book really, since I'm not sure I understand anything that has happened. If you're really into Sci Fi, you'll probably do much better with this series than I have.
OMG, I loved this novella. This cleared up so much of my confusion about what exactly was happening in Range. This book is told entirely from Tier's POV....YES!! Finally, we get to see some of what is going on in Tier's mind, especially after book #4 where there is some doubt cast as to whether he is really a good guy or not. In this book, there is no doubt that Tier loves Junco. YES!
Also, Junco spends so much of the series confused and not knowing who to trust. She's constantly questioning everyone's motives. It was nice to move into the POV of someone who actually knows what's going on and how all the players interact with those events. I really, really wish someone would give Junco a clue...this girl deserves some straightforward answers about what exactly is happening.
Then there's HOUSE...*sob* This was the most gorgeous story line ever! Junco is not present in this book, but the artificial intelligence of her HOUSE, which is very sentient, has taken the form of an 8 yo Junco. Tier's in charge of taking care of her and seeing him in a fathering role is just breathtaking, especially after the scene and his heartbreak at the beginning of Range (book #4). I absolutely LOVED this part of the story line and I fell in love with this guy all over again. He's an incredible character. I'm ready for him and Junco to have their HEA with lots of little babies....
The final book is out in December... I cannot wait to see how in the world J.A. Huss finishes this all out and answers all of Junco's questions.
I received a complimentary copy of this book in return for an honest review.
Coming off from reading Range (#4), I don't know, but I felt better after I read The Magpie Bridge. I guess it's because it isn't as tumultuous as Range and the underlying emotion in this novella is more of hope than anything else. The novella is also a nice break from Junco's perspective. This time it's from Tier's perspective and we get to see his side of the story and how he figures in all of it.
Like all the books in the series, The Magpie Bridge was an easy read. For me it's not as action-packed and fast-paced as the rest, but it feels like the slow calm before the big reveal--which I guess is just fitting for the book preceding the last installment in this crazy rollercoaster ride of a series.
I received a review copy of this book at no cost and with no obligations. All opinions expressed here are my own.
I was so excited to read from Tier's point of you. I loved to know exactly what has going thru is head in regarding Junco. I love the interaction with him and house and was cracking up laughing.. I can't wait to read the next and last book in this series
This book takes place from Tier's POV, beginning as he watches Junco and Inanna disappear into the seventh tower at the end of book four, and ending after he transmits HOUSE into space.
Tier follows through with Junco's last wish and tracks down HOUSE. He takes her to Gideon's resort condo, where, without much hope left for Junco's return, he feels a bit sorry for himself but finds an escape in HOUSE. He begins to understand the joy that children can provide, and many of his warriors enjoy HOUSE's company as well.
Lucan visits to say goodbye before returning to await the end on Amelia with Rikan. He opens up to Tier. He observes Tier and shares that he believes fatherhood comes naturally to him. He then goes on to say that he chooses Tier as his one true son, the sanctioned son, regardless that genetics indicate Rikan.
Caleb, Tier's counterpart under Him, visits and restores Tier's faith when he reveals his certainty that Junco will come back.
Annun observes that HOUSE is sick and needs help. Tier seems to have a love-hate relationship with Annun, who speaks without a filter, is rude and undisciplined, but observant, capable, and very effective at his job. Annun's observation motivates Tier, who finally gets a plan for how to move forward and enlists Annun's help.
It was wonderful to get into Tier's head after four books from Junco's POV. Although this was short, with the four previous books fresh in mind this was an emotional read. With one book remaining in the series, things are set up for the beginning of the end.
This series is complex and the characters feel real, except for when Junco occasionally acts and speaks out of character. In this book, Annun tries to briefly explain this (probably for the reader's benefit). I appreciated that attempt. It helps, but her behavior still bothers me. It would have been better for an explanation to come from her in real time, because without it it just seems like she has no compass, and although that argument can be made, she really does just want to be loved when she isn't busy taking down bad guys.
There are several explanations for outstanding questions found in this book, but a few more issues creeped up that seem contradictory. For example, if Lucan really does love Tier more than anything, which many characters have doubted, why was he in bed with Junco in the beginning of book four, and why did he keep Junco's rescue and return a secret from Tier for weeks? Why did Lucan ask Junco to choose him? Also, and perhaps I am confused on the details here, but I thought it was Tier that didn't want to be an Archer - and that Lucan would have welcomed Tier's morph. But now Lucan reveals that he has bargained everything for Tier's salvation. Yet as an Archer, Tier would have been marked by Lucan and ineligible for salvation, unable to cross the bridge he desperately wanted to cross as a child. If Lucan really would have supported Tier if he chose to become an Archer, then this doesn't add up.
I hope the outstanding questions will clear up in the next book. I suspect perhaps Lucan wanted to separate Tier and Junco because he wanted Tier to take his salvation and cross, but knew somehow that Junco would be marked and Tier would pass up his salvation to remain with her unless Junco moved on to someone else. This is just a guess, and I hope the answer is coming. Again, this still doesn't explain why Lucan would have supported Tier if he had chosen to become an Archer in the past.
This short novella from Tier’s POV was so moving. His love for HOUSE intertwined with his love for Junco. The ending, like all the endings in this series so far, left me wondering, what the heck is going on with a Junco? There is a method to this madness, I’m still waiting to catch my breath.
This novella was told in the POV of Tier. And be still my heart. It helped us learn a little more about Tier and his LOVE for Junco. I loved his relationship between him and House it was so sweet. This was a quick read. Filled with more info to help fill in blanks. I'm so ready to see how this series is going to end.
My big complaint with this one is it didn't read to me as a short story - it seemed an important part of the flow of the series and really should have just been the first few chapters to book 5. It was fun to start to hear things from other characters points of view.
This book is told from Tier's point of view, and mainly concentrates on Tier and HOUSE. Another fabulous book in Junco's story. I'm both keen to start the next book, and reluctant - Return is the last book and I'm enjoying Junco so much I don't want it to end.
I loved this little story with Tier and getting into his mind. But it left me with so many more questions needing to know what happens next! I can't wait to get stuck into the next book and get those desperately needed answers, I miss Junco too!
As we draw near to the climax, it’s clear the author has become as bored with the whining protagonist as I have, so gets 4 stars for dropping her entirely from this novella!
In this short novella we get to learn more about the final plan that is in place to protect the Earth, humans & Avians alike, from the High Order. And interestingly enough things are made much clearer on the grand scale, things previously hinted at are now suddenly referenced with a fairly heavy hand - up to and including dangling a possible answer to the eternal religious question about the existence of a single god.
This book definitely clears up more relationship questions from the individual's point of view, yet the involved parties do not discuss their feelings with one another, so there is still much to be resolved, should they live through the arrival of the High Order.
Since Tier is featured much more heavily in this book we get to know more of the real Tier - or at the very least we get a preview of how Tier relates to others internally. And Tier's true feelings for Junco finally come to light, both for Tier and the readers. Kinda makes one want to smack him upside the head and say "What took you so long?"
All told this is abbreviated story is lovely, and leaves you with a brutal cliff hanger of an ending, making the wait for December 2nd, 2013 all that much harder! December 2nd can't come soon enough in terms of getting my greedy little hands on the final book in this series!
I must point out the irony of Tier being someone who told Junco she had trouble seeing the obvious when he has the same issue. :) Of course, I had trouble seeing clearly as well... This entire series is one of details. I adore this in books - love looking for all the details, having to really think - so I've been constantly bookmarking and highlighting while reading Junco's story. But I have to admit that I missed some things. :)
Ms. Huss definitely packed a lot into this little book. The Magpie Bridge picks up right at the last scene of Range. It is fascinating being in Tier's head for once. And I was rapt watching as he fits all the "puzzle pieces" together. In my review of Clutch, I believe I commented on my love of the mythology that Ms. Huss has woven into Junco's story. It's something I've paid attention to - bookmarked - but I had no idea the importance the mythology would have. Ahh, puzzle pieces fitting together indeed.
The Magpie Bridge is an integral part of the story. I loved every word. I still have questions and things to mull over but I know all will be illuminated on December 2, 2013! ;) And I love finishing a puzzle! :)
"And I would sell my soul, I would give up my promised eternal salvation, if I could just get one more chance to make it right for them"
A little bit of Tier went along way. I feel better knowing what Tier's true feeling are, but it doesn't change my feelings for Lucian. UGH I'm so torn. I just want Junco to finally get PEACE! I still don't know who's the bad guy or who's the good guy. At this point it's irrelevant, because I've grown attachments to so many of the characters, so whatever happens whether wrong or right I just want Junco to be happy. I'm afraid I won't get what I want though. I'm seriously scared to read the last book. BUT I have to know what happens!!!!!
Oh it hurts....this. House and Tier. The Magpie Bridge solidified my love for Tier in a major way within such a short span. The pain from Range is still tender and seeing the connection between House and the others grow helped soothe it. Her spunk made me smile...a mini Junco to keep up with. But true to form the story takes another twist. Even though this one is just a novella it was an important piece of the puzzle and I think it's my second favorite next to Flight. 5+ Stars!
I'm glad this novella was right after Range. Range was emotionally harder than all the book so far in the series and reading this novella in Tier's POV helped to show he really does care about Junco and is trying to do his best. I also really enjoyed HOUSE. She helped to lighten things up before moving onto the final book in the series.
Good lord, so much is going on. I love Tier's point of view. It's taken four books to get in his head and I never want to leave! I just love him so much.
The Magpie Bridge is an emotional journey. All one can do it trust the author to guide us through this journey.
I'm looking forward to the conclusion to this wild ride.
That was so so sooo good. I love tier! I can't wait for December!!! I wish it was being released sooner!!! Anyone reading this series should definitely read this book!!
A very quick read that sorted out so many things. I really enjoyed reading from Tier's point of view. So many things make more sense. This book was written to clarify so many underlying stories.
