'Murder at Castle Rock' is the story of Amelia Grace, an events organiser for Castle Rock. When her boss dies under suspicious circumstances she finds herself caught up in a dangerous mystery she is compelled to solve.
This is one of those books I picked up to sneak a peek at and didn't put it down until I was finished! It starts off with a romantic comedy sort of vibe as Amelia is single and going through a dry spell when two guys she is strongly attracted to come into her life almost simultaneously. There are a few moments when she comes across something she is curious about and then the mysterious death of her boss brings with it a hint of danger and the plot picks up the pace.
There seemed to be quite a few clichés peppered throughout the novel, which is something that would usually bug me, but the humorous element to it made them feel essential to the story and the characters alike. The mystery was well plotted and the shocks were dealt to great effect. The characters were vividly depicted, in particular Amelia who was both a strong female character and a lot of fun.
Overall this is a entertaining & well-plotted mystery novel. I would recommend it to mystery fans, as well as anyone who likes a good romantic comedy!

One line review: Stoddard’s debut novel offers a fresh take on the murder mystery format, and promises a new heroine to join the ranks of the accidental detectives.
Slightly longer review: Speaking as someone who could quite happily spend days reading murder mysteries – you know, the kind set in rural English villages, where the enterprising protagonist lives in a cozy cottage with rose bushes and does a lot of tea-drinking – even I found the setting of Murder at Castle Rock to be refreshing. While the sleazy underbelly of the entertainment business has surely been overplayed, Anne Marie Stoddard does not give it undue page-time, instead portraying the darker, grittier side of the industry as only one facet – the other facet, on which she spends far more of her time, is that of a group of people who are passionate about music, work long hours, eat pizza at lunch, and have perfectly normal lives. (Except for the murders.)
To this end, Stoddard has created up Amelia Grace – a heroine who is similarly devoid of cliché. Grace’s genuine love of music is a defining trait, certainly, but what I found most refreshing was her lack of self-consciousness. Where were the body issues, the relentless self-comparison to other female characters, the cattiness solely devoted to frenemies? Mercifully, nowhere to be found. Female rivalry is matched by male rivalry. Sexual tension is only one of many motives for the murder. It was delightful.
This freshness persisted throughout other aspects of the novel. We’re all well acquainted with the format of mystery novels by this point, and introducing doubt into the proceedings takes a certain amount of skill. This, Stoddard has. She does an excellent job of showing us the unfolding story through Grace’s eyes – thus transporting us out of a mindset where multiple murders are expected, and into a place where the events take on a nightmarish quality. Our protagonist is quite clearly racing against the clock to prove her friends’ innocence (and stop further murders), and she knows it.
Strangely, it was Grace’s unswerving loyalty to her friends that struck me as one of the stranger points of the novel. While we knew from the start that the original suspects had no hand in the murder(s), they carried secrets and motives – I feel that some doubt on our heroine’s part might have amped up the tension. Further, however much I prefer conciseness to rambling (that would be infinitely), I felt that I could have luxuriated a little longer in the potential of each suspect’s guilt before moving on to the next. However, neither of these things should stop you from picking this one up. You’ll want to catch the first in what I hope will be a series of mysteries featuring Amelia Grace!
So. If you’re a mystery fan who is tired of middle-aged female detectives, or simply a summer reader looking for a fresh take on the murder mystery, I not only recommend Stoddard’s Murder at Castle Rock, but also her later novels in the series. She hasn’t released any yet, you see, but I have a sense that Stoddard’s best work is still to come – you’ll want to stick around to see what she has in store!

Sex, drugs, rock 'n roll ... And murder! Rock music is such ripe terrain for a murder mystery that I always wonder why there aren't more rock mysteries. Anne Marie Stoddard fills in the gap with "Murder at Castle Rock," about Ame, a booking agent at an Atlanta venue, who has to solve the murder of her boss.
Allow me to tackle all the highlights of “Murder at Castle Rock”:
Sex. Okay, there’s nothing explicit, but Ame has to track down the real killer before her friends get jailed for the crime … all while juggling the not-unwelcome attentions of several hot guys. One hot guy is Tony, who works for the local radio station, and the other is Brant, the bassist for the fading rock star Bobby Glitter. As you can probably guess, I rather enjoyed reading about these guys and their muscles.
Drugs. Speaking of Bobby Glitter, Mr. Glitter is not one of the aforementioned hot guys. In fact, he is the embodiment of a “Behind the Music” episode. When Stoddard writes about Glitter, I can just imagine some old, nasty, coke-addled horndog whose days in the spotlight are numbered. Stoddard isn’t afraid to write about the seedier aspects of rock ‘n’ roll and the backstage goings-on.
Rock ‘n’ Roll. The music always comes first, but nothing beats watching a concert at a good rock venue. I’ve had the pleasure of seeing shows at the Fillmore, the Greek Theater, the Troubadour and others. A good concert hall channels the energy of the band and the audience, and Stoddard really captures that in her descriptions of Castle Rock. It’s also fun to read about the day-to-day workings of the music biz, which isn’t nearly as glamorous as you think, especially if you are dealing with a band’s tour rider. Green M&Ms, anyone?
And finally ... Murder! The book emphasizes rock ‘n’ roll, but not at the expense of the mystery, which is packed with surprises. There are so many layers, motives and hidden agendas that I had a good time untangling it all. I’m not saying anything.
**I received an advance copy of the book, and Stoddard reviewed a book of mine as well. That said, our books fall in the same genre (a mystery that isn't cozy but isn't hard-boiled, either), so I would enjoy it anyway. If you aren't into this type of mystery, or you need your mysteries to involve recipes for baked goods, then you might not like this book.

Long review short, I loved it -- it reminded me of Stephanie Bond's Body Mover series, but with a rock music venue instead of Neiman Marcus.
In author Anne Marie Stoddard's Atlanta, there's a music venue called Castle Rock -- and manager Amelia Grace has booked the heart-throb of her teenaged years, Bobby Glitter, for a week of three shows and the filming of his comeback DVD. When Bobby Glitter shows up a wasted wreck, Amelia has to make sure the show still goes on -- even though her boss & venue owner, Parker, is also giving her problems -- he's become uncharacteristically handsy with the female staff. Against all the odds, Amelia gets Bobby on the stage and Parker under control... that is, until Parker takes a dive from the Castle's tower.
When Amelia's best friend and co workers at Castle Rock all become the police's prime suspects in Parker's early demise, she has no choice but to investigate on her own. Fortunately she has the help of the hunky new tech for the local rock station, Tony, even though Glitter's even hunkier bassist is warning her to stay out of it.
Like Heavy Mental by PJ Morse, this is another indie cozy mystery novel with a fresh twist - Rock 'n Rock. Amelia definitely isn't your typical cozy mystery protagonist, she's not a divorced middle-aged woman who cooks and bakes all the time. Instead she's a music lover who was never the cool kid in school, or the girl who the guys adore, and she's still slightly uncomfortable with those facts. She is however fiercely loyal, even though it puts her in danger.
The characters were well-developed, from the college box office intern to the washed up Bobby Glitter. As was the plot -- I honestly didn't see the ultimate conclusion coming. Anne gave just enough hints to keep me intrigued. It seems like first novels can be a bit overkill with the character details and lacking in plot development, but Anne had the perfect mix. At no point did the book seem to drag on, there was plenty of action and plot turns. Honestly the only thing I didn't like was the font used for the title and chapter heads -- which is just me being a graphic design nerd! And I can't justify taking a star away just because of that ;) Five out of five!

When Amelia Grace, events organizer at Castle Rock, an Atlanta concert venue, books several gigs with Bobby Glitter, a rock star from her own teen years, she believes their company is moving on up.
With everything poised for a successful week, Amelia is stunned when her boss, Parker Deering, plunges to his death from an overhead tower on opening night. And with his murder still unsolved, another tragedy occurs on the second night.
Now Amelia is more determined than ever to find out who is responsible, especially when the police seem determined to nail Bryce, the bouncer, and possibly Amelia’s best friend Kat, who has a secret of her own.
Narrated in the first person voice of Amelia, "Murder at Castle Rock" is like a mix of girl-detective and cozy mystery, with great characterizations and exciting twists and turns. I enjoyed how we could see Amelia's day-to-day life, with her ordinary moments, as she sets out to help solve the case. I felt as though I were right with her in her favorite pizza restaurant, as well as cozily ensconced with her and her trio of cats at her high rise apartment.
I enjoyed the mix of mystery and romance, and the way the author portrayed the characters, especially the annoying ones, like Stacey, whose ownership of another venue across town adds a surprising dimension to the story, while also showing her as a snarky foil for Amelia's down-home girl-detective. Teenage Bronwyn Sinclair has pouting and scowling down to an art, but shows us a tender and helpful side as she joins Amelia in sleuthing, along with Tony Spencer.
But is anyone who he or she seems? Are friends really foes? And what and who are behind the murders, anyway?
Just when I thought I had the murderer figured out, I was blindsided by an unexpected twist. When I thought the story was going one way, the misdirection turned into an exciting revelation of secret agendas and alliances.
Great conclusion to a page turner that I couldn't put down. Five stars!

Good natured read? Yes, there is such a thing and this is it! Anne Marie Stoddard has created a fine novel of murder, intrigue, secrets and plenty of twists which I didn't see coming.
Amelia is the promotions manager for Castle Rock, an events venue which was built to resemble a mediaeval castle, complete with dungeon, big hall and accompanying atmosphere. Thrilled that a British rocker with whom she was fascinated in her teenage years, Amelia rushes out to welcome Bobby Glitter and his entourage when they arrive for a series of three gigs. Imagine her astonishment when she realises that many years have passed since Glitter has actually glittered!
The aging rock weasel is into drugs in a big way - and it shows on his less than youthful countenance. His entourage, however, is more interesting. The bassist - a hunk - is, unfortunately entwined by Candy, a pouting surgery-enhanced groupie and the drummer is a man of very few words, none at all in fact. A famous radio DJ arrives, accompanied by his sound technician - Tony, also a hunk - hoping to get an interview with the less than sparkling rocker.
Amelia soon discovers that her friends and co-workers are keeping secrets - some of extreme consequence to Amelia. Then an essential person in Amelia's life is murdered and things go downhill from there!
Stoddard has created a wonderful heroine in Amelia, someone I can totally relate to and feel concern for - and that is what I mean by this book being a good-natured read. In spite of the murders and the machinations going on around her, Amelia remains stoic and loyal to her friends without being blinkered to their personal idiosyncrasies.
The ending is satisfying and a surprise - I did not pick the murderer, nor did I pick the background intrigue. A darned good read and well recommended.

The authorities suspect foul play and immediately start looking at the Castle Rock employees. Ame finds herself trying to clear her friend’s names while putting herself right in the line of fire. The curtain may be coming down at Castle Rock permanently.

This author knows what she writes. She shows us what goes on behind the scenes of the concerts we love and it isn’t always fun and games or pretty. In this case the Sex, Drugs, and Rock-n-Roll are joined by Murder and we go on one heck of a wild ride with Ame.

Murder at Castle Rock is Anne Marie Stoddard’s debut novel. But you’d never know it by reading it. She finely wove a web of deception. Twisting and turning the plot to her devices! I’m not often surprised by the ‘whodunnit’ but she sure did get me! I totally didn’t see that coming so prepare yourself for a wild ride.
Stoddard introduces you to the characters in a very pleasing way, you get to know them and care for them or despise them as is appropriate. She corrals you into a circle of really caring about what happens to them even if they are minor players in the action.
The story is not at all slow, it will grab you pretty quick and keeps you hooked.
Living in the Atlanta area there was added bonus to being able to actually picture the places she was talking about since I have been there many times. Including Castle Rock which is fashioned after the Masquerade in Midtown Atlanta. Stoddard’s description of the venue is dead on, and if you find yourself thinking “there can’t be a club like this”, think again. It’s real, I’ve been there and I’ve seen it and I’ve attended many shows there!
I am curious about “The Cavern”, I have my suspicions and I can’t wait to ask Anne Marie next time we talk.

Amelia Grace is smart, sassy and funny. She works at Castle Rock, a music venue in Atlanta, and she is stressed over organizing a reunion tour for an 80s pop star. She's also worried about guys, and she ends up being distracted by two cute guys who come into her life at the same time as the big reunion tour. When Amelia's boss dies under mysterious circumstances, she takes it upon herself to figure out what happened and who did it.
I really enjoyed reading this. It was an interesting cozy, and I loved the setting of the music industry. Amelia is a great female character, and I felt like I could easily relate to her. I loved trying to guess 'whodunnit' and I was kept guessing until the very end. The romantic twists were fun and sweet. Definitely worth reading!

This book is great it has it all romance, mystery, murder, and rock and roll. Once I started reading this book it drew me in and I wanted to keep reading until the end. The main character is Amelia and works at a concert venue. I loved all of the characters of this book and couldn't wait to see who was the killer. I have to admit,the ending was a big surprise. I hope the author writes a sequel with the same characters, I would love to see how the characters evolve and see what else they can get into.

Rock and roll AND a murder mystery?? How could you go wrong? Readers will be mindblown with how easily they will be sucked in to the story and will fall in love with our heroine Amelia Grace...she is supercool! Stoddard doesn't hold back one bit, and leaves us hanging on the edge of our seats with multiple questions left to be answered. Do I smell a sequel?? And, as the pulse-quickening plot continues to thicken, you'll find yourself gasping, and shouting at a few of the characters right up until the holy cow, wtf finish. It's a debut not to be missed!

Murder at Castle Rock by Anne Marie Stoddard is a fun fast-paced murder-mystery perfect for a rainy day or lazy afternoon! The story-line is interesting with a surprise ending. It's a fun read for anyone, but my first thought -as a mom- was that it would be a great read for older teens. The heroine is in her twenties, the setting is an exciting music venue, and there is an appropriate level of romance that's not trashy/erotic. Highly recommended!

Great music industry related murder mystery. Believable down to earth characters. Some great twists even when you think you are solving the case. Some great 'Oh snap' moments. Highly recommend if you are in the mood for a good murder mystery.

Unfortunately, Bobby did not age well and murder follows his first revival concert. With the owner of the venue dead, secrets will reveal themselves and the reality of Amelia’s life will implode. This book is a fun read with lots of surprises. I can’t wait for the next installment of Ame’s world.

I was really struggling to get into this story until chapter 5. But once it got interesting I couldn't put it down and finished it in a night. The characters could have been a bit more developed but overall it was a cute story. Definitely worth the read!

Let’s paint a backdrop of a castle themed nightclub reminiscent of the famed Castle Club in Chicago. Throw in a little Aldous Snow (expertly played by Russell Brand in “Get Him to the Greek”). Transport the venue to Atlanta and throw in a little Stephanie Bond cozy mystery styling and you have “Murder at Castle Rock.”
As with most cozy leads, Ame is an unlikely hero. She is an ordinary woman working a job she loves with friends she cherishes and not really thinking toward the future. Getting Bobby Glitter to play the club is a huge triumph for her punctuated by a local rock station covering the event but she’s going to make it work despite the minor trouble that may befall the group. This is going to be crowning achievement and things are going up from here. When the owner of the club, who had recently been acting erratically falls to his death, Ame must know what happened. That’s the hook for cozies. You have the character unable to resist justice. For Ame she knows that her friends weren’t involved in his death and that’s all she needs to know. With her sidekick, the teenaged Bronwyn, she sets out to find the truth and clear her friends of suspicion.
Stoddard’s Stephanie Bond-like style will give this author and character longevity. The author tells us that her passion is the music industry and concerts and I can while she doesn’t belabor the technical details, she gives us a sense of place and reality. We have a character with a job that she does while using intelligence, common sense and a bit of chance to work herself into a case in which she doesn’t belong.
If you’re looking for a vacation, summer or beach read. Something light but interesting and wholly engaging, pick up “Murder at the Castle Rock.”

Grace loves music, she is a normal person with no super skills expect people liking her and at some point you could almost see her as a read person. She does try to solve the mystery but with all murder mysteries she does it to protect someone she cares for.
Anne Marie Stoddard has written a great murder mystery from beginning to end and keep you guessing to the end of the novel who the true murder is and why. She uses quite a bit of pop culture in her book but since she is working in the music industry that is to be expected and creates some really funny moments.

so amelia and her friends are living their dream- working at the castle rock concert venue and booking great acts- as a matter of fact her teen idol bobby glitter is coming to do 3 sold out shows- - she is up for promotion- what could go wrong-- well for starters her rock idol has really let him self go-- then her boss is found dead and the police are thinking it was inside job- as she starts looking into who done it- secrets her friends have been keeping keep tumbling out of the closet as well as more dead bodies found at her working place- it is not all bad- she does have 2 dreamy guys wanting to kiss her all over-- she just has to stay alive while she finds the murderer - this was a fun fast paced- clever who done it taking place behind the scenes of the concert world- the heroine amelia and her best bud kat are smart fun sassy ladies with a strong stubborn streak-- throw in some some steamy romance- a few plot twists - some strong secondary characters- some suspense and you have in my opinion a fab new series by anne marie stoddard- i enjoyed the first book and am looking forward to the next-- want to know more about the people who work at castle rock

I loved this book - it drew me right in and made me care about the characters. I felt like I really knew Amelia and was invested in her story. She is a great character and I hope the author writes more books featuring her.
This book had it all - sex, drugs, and rock & roll, with a side of murder. The murder mystery kept me guessing and just when I thought I had it figured out, I was surprised.

Amelia and her best friend Kay are excited that their favorite band is coming Castle Rock where both have carved out their careers. Not only are they disillusioned about the rock idol but they find themselves in the midst of an investigation when the owner and their boss, Parker, is murdered. Amelia finds Kay has been keeping a secret from her and the rest of their friends and staff. There is plenty of suspects to go around especially when another of their co-workers is murdered as well. This book keeps you guessing as to who is hiding something and who is exactly as they seem.

At first I wasn't sure this was the book for me - I have never been a big follower of rock and roll superstars, but ... then the story grew on me. And I kept wondering what was going to happen. I "sort of" suspected who might be behind all the bad things happening at Castle Rock, but the ending still had a few surprises for me. That, to me, makes a book a success: if I haven't figured out all the answers before the last page. Another mark of success is: do I want to see what happens to characters in a sequel book? The answer, for me, is: YES. So bring on the next Amelia Grace book.

The identity of the murderer seemed a little bit televised, but the ending was great! This was definitely a great book to pass the time and I am very glad that I read it. Hopefully there will be many more Castle Rock mysteries to come.
